The demo that Prince gave to Maserati in Studio 2 at Sunset Sound with David "Z". PURPLE RAIN WORK ORDER 4 SALE: sunset-sound-m... #prince #kiss #sunsetsound
Thank you for noticing my comment 🙏 U are doing an amazing job on this channel. I am a long time fan of Prince's music (since 1982) I have seen him many times in concerts in Paris & London. It is so nice to hear all these behind the scenes' stories. Love from France 🥰
"Well done P" my skinny white ass. This is a (thankfully) rare case where P literally stole somebody else's idea. Did he elevate David Z. and Mazarati's demo? Absolutely. But they are the ones who made the song a #1 hit.
That's not the way it works unfortunately the melody and the Lyric are the song in the eyes of the law the other stuff is just incidental . Up to the original songwriter to cut the deal for parts. Sad but true.
The music I created for this was stolen right underneath me and all I hear are lies from people who make claims of its creation. This was the original demo give to me from Prince. He never gave this to Mazarati he handed to me, Mazarati’s producer. Even that title was stripped from me! I wish we lived in a world where people were honest!
I hate the idea that the Prince name was stamped on all of those album covers and labels as producer, composer... Especially when so many people were involved.
@@lolpurrpol Yes, he was in full control of the credits. We you look at singles released, it says “Written, produced, arranged and composed by Prince and The Revolution “ This idea so many spread that he did all this himself is an insult to the years of hard work we all put in to these songs. Truth is truth however most people want to believe what someone told them. We, the band were never backup musicians. We were a band. He found the need to give us a name and we all agreed on “The Revolution.” The rest was history.
@@BrownMark Does that mean you were paid as contracted musicians? Even though the singles were purposely miscredited, were your names proper on publishing?
@@lolpurrpol complicated but definitely mis credited. I wrote songs for my band Mazarati that ended up on other peoples albums that I never got credit for. I wrote the music on Parade I never got credit nor compensation for. I’m over it and life goes on. I just like to set the record straight about Kiss. 👍🏾
That would certainly be evidence of the problem with the music industry and distribution practices because if the song is good, it would have been good whoever sang it. But on another note, as told by Mark Brown in his book, he and Maserati took that demo and made it funkier than that demo. That’s when prince wanted it back.
@@ROCKNROLLFAN I have Mazeratis version..its sounds fuller..Prince kept Mazeratis background vocals on his version. And Brown Mark is right. He heard Mazerati putting funk on it. Prince stripped it down, put a gated drum on it, and the rest is history
@@JuliusHowe I think he actually gave this demo version to producers in another studio, for their artist. They added all the funky drum/synth parts, gave it back to Prince to hear and he suddenly decided (due to what the producers had done), that he wanted it back. More collaboration, than single-handed.
You have to have Zero production on a demo for a major because they want to have complete control of you, and they want to have a job to do so they can say they were responsible for your success. Prince had to play stupid for Major labels, even though he knew he was miles ahead of them on talent. I have absolutely no respect for record labels. They're full of ego maniacs that know nothing about true art.
@@ravenstrange8466 So very true about the A&R at the record companies. Less is more when presenting a demo tape, a producer doesn't want to hear it already produced.
This is great! It so works as a bloooose ballad! Such a shame it hasn't been tidied up, I would... but a squashed fly probably has more ability using Audacity than me! lol ...after how many years? caramba!
According to Brownmark he did all the heavy lifting on the production because Prince told him it was going to be Brownmark's song now. Then when Prince heard the track Brownmark made out of it he said "I want it back now."
@@teddygee7859 no. Prince wrote and demoed the acoustic version. Gave it to Maserati, who developed it quite a bit. Prince famously took it back and recorded the final version.
PRINCE the no.1 example of the history & stories of real LEGENDS. 'give & take' 😉 now i understand, JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWIS had to go 'SOLO' on productions , because JAM & LEWIS are really LEGENDARY.
Not to be THAT guy... ok I'll be that guy... the tuning is a quater-tone off concert-pitch. I picture that gat must have been lying around unplayed for ages, and His Purpleness just grabbed it when the inspiration struck. "OK baby, we gotta get this down... NOW!" ❤
@@sunsetsoundrecorders It's just the weirdest thing, cause I've seen some of the sunset sound clips, so I'm looking at it and I'm thinking well maybe that was his favorite shampoo, sure that's got to be it. Oh ok it's a mic DUH. We live we learn, rinse repeat.
i have areally hard time believing that Prince "didnt know how to make this song sound funky" as David Z and Patty claim. At worst he may have been bored with the idea and wanted to let someone else have a crack at it. But he thought enough of the track to hav eDavid come to MPLS and listen to it. The mere fact that Mazerati recorded it doesn't make it "theirs". Im starting to see more and more shit posted on the sunset sound sessions trying to take credit away from Prince and that just looks like a bunch of jealous industry insiders trying to finally get a little shine of their own.
When a simple blues chords progression becomes an absolute hit. Well done P. 👍🙏💫

It’s a shame that Brown Mark never got the credit he deserved for his contribution to the final version of Kiss. IYKYK

@@elliebeeradio3293 it’s damn shame.
Prince didn't credit many people who contributed to his catalog. It so ironic that he was a strong advocate for owning your work.
Many people in the Prince world were Prince slaves, working for nothing, getting no credit, etc...
Yes, very ironic. The ultimate hypocrite.
Truth!
Kiss: The blues origins. A sign of a great song is the blueprint. So now yall know that this song can be worked all types of ways and still work.
You a bae😍
If he sang 'Mary Had a Lil Lamb,' it would sound PHENOMENAL!

The GOAT! And nobody’s close
For Prince this was just putting an idea down like a sketch book , if he was alive he would never have released it , I don’t think

Interesting to hear how this influenced later songs after kiss, notably cream.
This should be on the Parade super deluxe edition. (if it ever gets released that is)

Why would they?
