One important thing to point out with the DS2 - WH10 boost is the order of the pedals. If you have the volume boost problem, make sure that you have your pedals in the following order: guitar > DS2 > WH10 > OD pedal > amp. You can put whatever else you want into that chain, but it is crucial that the overdrive is the last pedal before the amp. That way, you can pretty much control the overall volume with the volume knob of the overdrive pedal. Which essentially flattens the boost of the DS2 and WH10. As Dave says, the overdrive pedal compresses the volume of everything that happened before it down to a pleasant level and fixes all your problems. Edit: Just realized that you do mention that later on in the video. Nevermind.
I can't thank you enough! I'm a beginner on this whole guitar world, and you've just given me both a learning target and resolved a question I had, cause I had no idea of how the hell are you supposed to use the neck of the guitar to solo. You're such a nice lad, I enjoy all of your videos. Cheers from Colombia, Dave!
took a break from practicing arpeggios of half-diminished minor 7 chords to watch this video about pentatonics cause you never know when Dave will come up with some supervaluable idea
You are a beautiful human being ! You are the first person I see who's as crazy about John as I am on guitar ! I spent a millions hours trying to be as close as possible to him. Thanks a lot for your videos it's a massive help especially for equipment ! The ibanez wah is coming in 2017 now :)
Im glad i'm past learning all the pentatonic and major scales so i'll be looking forward to learning and working on all the john phrasing in your future lessons. But this was very informative for people not formilier with scales, great vid as always!
Thank you very much indeed. I'm not 100% on the time of the delay. I just mess with it till it sounds right. Usually tap tempo it in like John would. :) John had his set for only one repeat though. I prefer more. :)
Which delay do you use for it Dave? Is it the Line 6? Is there any chance in the future you could do a video on that pedal for sounding like John because it has like a million different options, don't know where to start
Thank you so much for this video Dave, let's just say, if this lesson was on VHS tape, I'd have worn it out already. Looking forward to next weeks lesson. As always, 🤘🏻
Dave have you ever tried a Mosrite fuzzrite? La cigale intro is the mosrite fuzzrite he used that alot during the Stadium Arcadium era, Dani California Solo DS-2 + fuzzrite.
Dave - you're on it as always. The DS2 and WH10 combo HAS to have an amp on close to break-up. Common sense, but many forget this! However, did you know John used a DOD FX65 on BSSM (not a CE-1)? You should check them out - they are dirt cheap and sound super good. By the way, SPOT ON about the DS2 sounding fuzzy. So many people overlook this. You are truly getting the proper truth out there.
Thank you very much indeed and i did indoodles know about the DOD. If i could afford one I'd get one. I don't really have any money to spend on gear sadly. :( Thank you so very much again. :)
Amazing video and love your channel mate! Very helpful to learn about this guitar legend. One constructive commentary: Shouldn't be from input to output when you explain the pedals order (guitar- pedals-amp)? I think you did it the other way round. Thanks
Thank you very much indeed and glad you like the videos. :) I have to explain pedal order that way because thats the way i have always seen it. Its the way it makes sense in my head. Thank you again for watching. :)
Thank you a lot for this Dave... you explained it so well. Great teacher :) ....what would be a suitable chord progression to play around with this scale over?
hey dave, i appreciate your output and your style a lot! greetings from germany! one little thing: if you shoot videos like this with 45mins length, you should put like: for intermediates, start watching at 22:00 when the explanation of the pentatonics is over. absolutely no criticism, just an idea, because I know it's good to go through stuff slowly, but not everyone needs this detail ;) cheers, mate
Any word on the one they speak of named sean hoppe?? I see his channel is still breathing but no uploads of the recent kind. Also can't wait for the new album! "For John"
No word. RUclips have said they see no issue with his channel and will take no action against it. So i guess i just have to ignore it and keep going. Thank you for watching. :)
Unbelievable. I don't know how they can't find an issue with a channel which is just stolen videos. Still, that is what these American tech giants are: big on leverage and algorithms, low on humanity.
Hi Dave, love what you do. You give so much back to us, it's a bless really! Just a question to make sure I understood you right about the pedal order. The guitar goes in the chorus, then into delay, then into ds2, then fuzz, then wah and into guitar amp? Or have I got it the wrong way around? I kinda always thought the delay and chorus had to just before the amp.. Can you clear that out for me please? I'm a big fan! Talk later
Thank you so very very much indeed. Pedal order should be Amp - Chorus - Delay - Overdrive - Wah - DS2 - Fuzz - Guitar. :) Thank you very much again and i hope this clears it up. :)
Hey Dave, I may not have found the right video yet, but what’s an inexpensive, not too large amp that I could use for John’s tone? Your videos are awesome by the way, keep it up!
I learnt from mainly watching videos, listening to cds and just sat figuring the guitar out. I can't read music or tabs because I'm Dyslexic so i had to find my own way. :)
Dave I have a cr120 and set it like you explained in the first how to play like JF video (so dirty channel and gain at 3.5) but I still get a huge boost.
Thank you so much for all your lessons. You keep me going for playing John-like with my own band sometimes. BTW: Do you think that a WH-10 V2 will also work or has it be a V1?
No, not much difference really - but there is a youtube vid that compares them directly. The MIJ sounds a touch more fuzzy and warmer - but the difference is tiny. Something to do with germanium diodes...
Nice Video :) It would be nice to hear your thoughts on the speaker selection. I've seen you got the JCM900 Cabinet like John and if his are stock, wich is not very well documented I guess, there should be G12T-75 speakers in there. Wich Cabinet are you using and how does it compare to your others ones ? Is it another must have like the DS2 or is it totally irrelevant ?
Thank you for watching. :) John's cabs were just stock 75s and they are my favourite speaker. I don't get on well with 25 watt greenbacks or vintage 30s. I find them to bright and have a harshness i don't like. The 75s just seem to be smoother and give me the sound i want. :) I am using a JCM 900 b cab. My favourite cab. Its darker and warmer sounding to any other cab i have. :) For John's tone i would say its kind of important to have 75's but its not a absolute need like the DS2 or WH10. :)
Hey guys, I'm re-learning to play guitar. Got some questions, hope you can help me: 1) I do know that every position in a scale is named after root note but how am I supposed to know if progression is minor or major? 2) do you know any sources where I can find which chord/scale is relative to others? 3)I remember that I was learning different pentatonic scales than this one... First position was like 030302020303...what's the difference? Thanks in advance :)
These Frusciante episodes are awesome! I have a question, Dave - What do you think about the Dunlop Crybaby wah? Can it be an alternative to the Ibanez/Vox wah? Thanks a lot for these lessons/tips about John's tone, I'm learning a lot about him! :)
Thank you very much and i'm glad you like them. :) I personally don't like crybaby's at all. I hate the sweep and i just find them very un expressive. But saying that. Thats my preference. If you like the Cry Baby it can be used as an alternative as long as you do the overdrive thing i talk about in the video. :)
Thanks so much for this again, really informative. Can anyone recommend any books on guitar theory that are worth reading to increase knowledge on keys, notes etc?
If you could possibly like better explain what you mean by having pedals before and after each other that would be great! I was confused by what you meant by having the fuzz after the overdrive but that would be closest to your guitar. So if you could better explain that that would be awesome!
Hi Dave, Love your channel, you are a very fine musician. I have been looking around for an Ibanez Wh10 without much luck. During my search I found a company in the US called Wilson Effects. They sell a product called "Ten Spot II Wah" which is meant to be an accurate clone of the Wh10 pedal. You should check them out and see what you think. Cheers
Brilliant! Thanks! Tell me, what is that bit you play from about 34:45 to 35:00? I recognise it but I can't remember the song. it is truly magical. Hope you're going to show it to us sometime.:)
Thank you very much. I would put your reverb pedal just before your overdrive or wah if your not using an overdrive. Amp - Chorus - Reverb - Overdrive - Wah - DS2 - Guitar Or Amp - Chorus - Reverb - Wah - DS2 - Guitar I hope this helps. :)
Its good to hear that! Many people have problems with the volume boost etc etc.. I play through a fender frontman 25r amp, and your tip to always play through the dirty channel really helped me!
Its all in practise and playing around with them. Its good to learn John's solos and see how he uses them then go from there. It takes time but its worth it : )
Is it worth spending money on SSL1 pickups? Have a squeir strat that i love and it sounds amazing through my Marshall but the only problem is the output of the stock pickups are kinda dead, is it worth putting them in?
If your happy with the sound you have i wouldn't say its worth it no. Stay with what you have if you like it and it works for you. If the output is a little low bring your pickup height up a little. :)
Dave please clear something up for me. In this video you teach the pentatonic scale in the key of Dm, but position 1 is in Fmaj (1st fret) and position 5 is Dm (10th fret). If the key is Dm, shouldn't position 1 be Dm? In the 3rd theory video you mentioned that if a song is in the key of Amaj, position 1 begins with A. Shouldn't the same apply for Dm?
Position one is always major and position 5 is always minor. To me its silly and backwards but it is what it is i suppose. I always class the minor as position one and major as position 2. In all fairness. I'm not happy with teaching it the way i did and might do another video soon talking about this. Sorry. This isn't really an answer. :)
Hey Dave, just want to ask can I use my Blackstar LT Dual pedal as subtitute for OD? And if so, where should I put it to get that JF tone? Here's my current rig set-up. Thanks! (amp>delay>chorus>phaser>wah>ds-2>LT Dual>compressor>guitar)
Thank you so much Dave. How about the ibanez ts9dx as od? Will it do? Lastly can you give me an advice how should I arrange my pedals from amp to guitar? :)

I genuinely believe you are the best guitar teacher on YT.
Than k you very very much indeed. That means alot to me. :)
Easily, if you pardon the pun (rhcp song)
Thank you Dave. We all appreciate your channel greatly and without a doubt it will grow!
Thank you so very much indeed. That means a lot to me. :)

thanks john! oops soorry. Dave!
Haha. Thank you. :)
took a break from practicing arpeggios of half-diminished minor 7 chords to watch this video about pentatonics cause you never know when Dave will come up with some supervaluable idea
Nicolas Menshenin lmaoo
This lesson is just superb. So clear. Now, with some practice, there is no reason why I shouldn't be able to do this. Thank you so much.
Thank you. : )
Dave, there aren't enough words in the universe to describe how good of a teacher you are
Thank you so very much indeed. :)
You are a beautiful human being ! You are the first person I see who's as crazy about John as I am on guitar ! I spent a millions hours trying to be as close as possible to him. Thanks a lot for your videos it's a massive help especially for equipment ! The ibanez wah is coming in 2017 now :)

3 minutes into the video and i feel like 99% of all the questions i ever asked my self are about to be answered, thanks dave good job :)
Thank you very much indeed. :)
Just made my weekend seeing this. As always keep it up!
Thank you very much and i'll do my best. :)
Better than any Christmas present. Thanks Dave!

Subbed!
Thank you very much indeed and thank you for subscribing. :)
This opened up a new world for me, thanks so much Dave. Have a great day.
Thank you very much indeed. You have a great day to. :)
Thanks Dave! Great video and very informative. I could listen to your playing all day

I love these series, thank you very much Dave for doing this! I have a question - how do you set your delay in Don't forget me?
Thank you very much indeed. I'm not 100% on the time of the delay. I just mess with it till it sounds right. Usually tap tempo it in like John would. :) John had his set for only one repeat though. I prefer more. :)

This stuff is great. Notice how ppl fall off when we go into music theory but it is so important to one’s growth as a musician.
Thank you and thank you for watching. : )
Thanks John Simpson. 😎🎸🎼🎶
You are really doing the Lord's work here Dave!
Thank you.
Thank you very much indeed. :)
i waited so long for that, thanks man for all the work that you doing🔝
as always great video!!
Thank you so much for watching and waiting. :)
Thank you so much for this video Dave, let's just say, if this lesson was on VHS tape, I'd have worn it out already. Looking forward to next weeks lesson. As always, 🤘🏻
Thank you very much indeed. :)
Thank you, Dave! Very informative, you're the best :)
Thank you very much indoodle. :)
Great lesson Dave. I can't thank you enough for this video.
Thank you very much and thank you for watching. :)
This is motivation for me to learn theory. Big thanks Dave.
Thank you for watching. :)
Thanks so much, exactly the kind of lesson I was looking for. Gonna work through all of these over the next couple of weeks :)
Thank you very much. :)
Yeah cool Dave... thank you so much for another awesome John lesson!!!
Thank you very much and thank you for watching. :)
Dave have you ever tried a Mosrite fuzzrite? La cigale intro is the mosrite fuzzrite he used that alot during the Stadium Arcadium era, Dani California Solo DS-2 + fuzzrite.
Worth watching for the pedals alone. That sound is insane. Loving this series so much, thank you Dave.
Thank you very much indeed. :)
Dave Simpson You're welcome man. Thank you for helping me improve my playing.
Thanks so much for your videos Dave, they're amazing!
Thank you very much indeed. :)
I needed this.. thank you so much Dave.
Thank you very much indeed. :)
We need more like this. thank you so much bro!
Thank you very much indeed. :)

Thank you very much. :)
great video!!
I thank you so much for this dave
Thank you very much for watching. :)
My pedals would be if got them all is a Triungular Lab CE-1, a Line 6 DL4, an Ibanez WH-10 V3 or v1 or v2 and DS-2 which I already have.
I have to explain pedal order that way because thats the way i have always seen it. Its the way it makes sense in my head.
Thank you again for watching. :)
best youtube channel
Thank you so very very much indeed. :)
Hey Dave! Any delay pedal with a reverse option you can recommend? What do you think about boss dd7?
Thanks for the amazing videos ! :)
The DD7 is a good pedal for that. I use a Line 6 hx and also a line 6 delay modeller.
Thank you very much for watching. : )
Also musicians friend. Same price. Take care!
A big thank you, man! I learned a lot
Thank you very much indeed. :)
great lesson bro
Thank you very much. :)
Great lesson, thanks a lot!

Thank you a lot for this Dave... you explained it so well. Great teacher :) ....what would be a suitable chord progression to play around with this scale over?

thank you for all your vídeos!

GOD BLESS YOU DAVE! For all you've taught us.;-)
Thank you so very very much. :)
I reported it and was also told that stealing is absolutely a-ok in their opinion.
i like putting the distortions before the wah. i find that if you put distortion after the wah it takes away from the wah sound
cool dave thank you
Thank you. :)
Thank you Dave :)
Thank you. :)
an even easier way to do it is to learn the two main positions and then you'll be able to see all the other shapes as the positions connect together
Pedal order should be
Amp - Chorus - Delay - Overdrive - Wah - DS2 - Fuzz - Guitar. :)
Thank you very much again and i hope this clears it up. :)
35:20 pedals
This video is very helpful! :)
Thank you very much and i'm happy to hear that. :)
Hey Dave, I may not have found the right video yet, but what’s an inexpensive, not too large amp that I could use for John’s tone?
Your videos are awesome by the way, keep it up!
Boss katana.
Sir Psycho outro is a theory breaker! Haha
:)
Its a lot like Jimi Hendrix - 1983 A Merman I should Turn To Be verse. :)
You are amazing! Thank you sooooo much
Thank you very much indeed. :)
Great video Dave! Can you make video about how to achieve his tone with overdrive pedals ? (As close)
Thank you very much indeed and I shall get to that at somepoint. :)
You can get the ibanez wh1 on amazon prime right now for $100 US dollars free shipping. Just wanted to let you know :)
Thanks you very much. :)
Would you ever teach individual Hendrix songs like Castles made of sand, Villanova Junction, Electric Lady land ?
I would and i shall be when i get chance. :)
Thank You
Thank you. :)
did you take guitar lessons or did you learn from books?
I learnt from mainly watching videos, listening to cds and just sat figuring the guitar out. I can't read music or tabs because I'm Dyslexic so i had to find my own way. :)
Cool y personally took crappy lessons cor a two years and now I learn most of my theory and stuff from books and youtube
Thanks man
Thank you. :)
Hi Mate, All good? Love your videos bro! Question: Where in your fx pedals chain add phase 90 and a compressor ? Cheers
Hi there. Indeed all is well. I hope all is well with you. I would go this route
Amp - Compressor - Wah - Phase 90 - Fuzz - Ds2.
:)
Thank you!
Thank you. :)
Dave I have a cr120 and set it like you explained in the first how to play like JF video (so dirty channel and gain at 3.5) but I still get a huge boost.
Try boosting the gain a little more till it goes away. If its to distorted then you will have to use an overdrive pedal to get the John tone. :)
Thank you so much for all your lessons. You keep me going for playing John-like with my own band sometimes. BTW: Do you think that a WH-10 V2 will also work or has it be a V1?
Thank you so very much for watching. I'm happy you like them. :) My WH10 is a V2. There awesome. :)
obrigado pela aula
Please Dave do a "How Many Tones Can You Get Out Of One Amp: Frank Zappa"
Good Gravy. Now that would be a challnge. :)
LEGEND!
Thank you very much. :)
class.
Thank you very much. :)
Hi Dave, Love your passion! The DS2 is it MIJ or MIT? Big difference? Grts from Belgium!
Thank you very much indeed. I have no idea where mine is made but i doubt theres a great difference in sound. Thank you again for watching. :)
No, not much difference really - but there is a youtube vid that compares them directly. The MIJ sounds a touch more fuzzy and warmer - but the difference is tiny. Something to do with germanium diodes...
Very good!! Regards!!
Thank you very much. :)
John's cabs were just stock 75s and they are my favourite speaker.
Could you please do a video on all of your gear and your pedal board
I have a video on my pedal board somewhere on my channel and i talk about my setup in that videos also. :)
Cry baby goes wah. Literally. Wh10 goes more of a whu sound
Agree, id say the Vox is next best to the wh10. Super versatile and sounds great. Jimi loved his Vox!
Do you see that everybody enjoyed your video? 270vs0 :D I mean you did good job. I wish you made smth this week. Greetings!
Thanks so much for this again, really informative. Can anyone recommend any books on guitar theory that are worth reading to increase knowledge on keys, notes etc?
you're amazing
Thank you very much indeed. :)
Is that totally normal when your neck pickup slightly angles.
If you could possibly like better explain what you mean by having pedals before and after each other that would be great! I was confused by what you meant by having the fuzz after the overdrive but that would be closest to your guitar. So if you could better explain that that would be awesome!
Your signal chain should be
Amp - Chorus - Delay - Overdive - Wah - DS2 - Fuzz pedal - Guitar
:)
Dave Simpson thanks man!!
Hi Dave,
Love your channel, you are a very fine musician.
I have been looking around for an Ibanez Wh10 without much luck.
During my search I found a company in the US called Wilson Effects.
They sell a product called "Ten Spot II Wah" which is meant to be an accurate clone of the Wh10 pedal.
You should check them out and see what you think.
Cheers
Thank you very much indeed. :)
Thats really cool. I shall take a look. Thank you for letting me know about it. :)
Can you tell me the compression pedal you were talking about that you prefer? I couldn’t quite understand you in the vid. Thanks!!
Is that normal with the scratch plate lifting up mine does that not all the way but I can see the neck pickup under neith.
Brilliant! Thanks! Tell me, what is that bit you play from about 34:45 to 35:00? I recognise it but I can't remember the song. it is truly magical. Hope you're going to show it to us sometime.:)
outro to Sir psycho sexy
Thanks! I'm now going to have to listen to it. Have to admit, I haven't listened to BSSM as much as the later ones.
It's pretty Parliament Funkadelic, is it not? Weren't they hooked up with Bootsy Collins at one point, or was it George Clinton?
Thank you very much and thank you very very much for you donation. That means a lot to me. I will get round to teaching it at somepoint. :)
You're more than welcome. Wish it were more.
Hey Dave, great lesson! (as always) I have a question: i have a reverb pedal, when you recommend me to put it? before the chorus or after the ds-2?
Thank you very much. I would put your reverb pedal just before your overdrive or wah if your not using an overdrive.
Amp - Chorus - Reverb - Overdrive - Wah - DS2 - Guitar
Or
Amp - Chorus - Reverb - Wah - DS2 - Guitar
I hope this helps. :)
Dave Simpson I forget to tell that i have a delay pedal too! Amp - Chorus - Delay - Reverb - Wh10 - Ds2 - Guitar? is that correct?
Nicolas Bay thats the one. :)
Hi Dave! Thanks for another video. Let me ask you, did u make any mods on your wh10?
Thank you very much indeed and i haven't done anything to my WH10 no. Its totally stock. :)
Its good to hear that! Many people have problems with the volume boost etc etc.. I play through a fender frontman 25r amp, and your tip to always play through the dirty channel really helped me!
Hi, I have a question. After learning the shapes how exactly do i use them?
Its all in practise and playing around with them. Its good to learn John's solos and see how he uses them then go from there. It takes time but its worth it : )
Is it worth spending money on SSL1 pickups? Have a squeir strat that i love and it sounds amazing through my Marshall but the only problem is the output of the stock pickups are kinda dead, is it worth putting them in?
If your happy with the sound you have i wouldn't say its worth it no. Stay with what you have if you like it and it works for you. If the output is a little low bring your pickup height up a little. :)
thanks for the videos dave, u sexy beast.
do you use any compressors in these series?
Haha. Thank you very much indeed. I am not using a compressor nope. :)
Dave, how do you run the tone on the ds-2 on max without it getting super thin and trebley/bright sounding? Great video once again.
No clue. :) It just seems to work with the amp been slightly broken up. Thank you very much for watching.
I wouldn't recommend that pedal for JF tone but you can try it. It wants to be right after your amp. so amp then balckstar. :)
Thank you so much Dave. How about the ibanez ts9dx as od? Will it do? Lastly can you give me an advice how should I arrange my pedals from amp to guitar? :)
