Full disclosure: you've become my guitar teacher. I spent so much time with the strat while I was down with covid that I'm definitely a better player now. Your explanation of how you chose to be a pentatonic player in an effort to fully express yourself rather than pursuing deeper theoretical/technical pursuits was a revelation to me. I have since unlocked the fretboard in a big way. Thanks brother!
Honestly, you are one of my favourite guitarists ever. I’m not even joking. Love your playing. In another era, you’d be heralded as one of the greats. I actually believe that.
Dave , I’m a pretty novice guitar player but have been consumed over the past couple years after becoming a paraplegic from a car accident but today’s video unlocked something inside for me with these chord progressions and your words . Like you said some of them just get you , well between the video your words and the tone , today you got me bro and I thank you for that. Cheers
Exceptional... love this.... Like I have said before you are one of the only guitarist on here that when I just casually watch a video makes me want to pick up my guitar and play it!
This video combined with me having my “Guitar Chords Encyclopedia” open on the bed unlocked chord formations for me. I am forever thankful for how much you’ve taught me on guitar. I really don’t think I would’ve stuck with guitar if it wasn’t for you and John Frusciante.
I am totally with you on your final ten minute tangential summary of why you play. I watch your videos to feel those emotions and I avoid shredders, because technique like that leaves me emotionally cold. I was a vocalist and played acoustic guitar in the Catalan Rock Band (Pere Flipat) in the late 1980s. Our guitarist probably only knew a couple of scales, but in rehearsal or performance his solos could make me weep.
Music is what kept John going, really glad it kept you going for people that really are trying to get closer to his unique sound and playing, and you are likely to give others the ability to spread that same mission. Thank you so much for all you have done and are doing 🙏
alright, im commenting again, i've watched this video about a dozen times since you put it out yesterday (to take notes of course) you are seriously a fantastic teacher dave. the majority of us here love johns music and we have you here dishing out videos like this which are pure gold for us as mere mortal players. thank you thank you thank you thank you
Man youre so inspiring ! I've been playing guitar about 10 years and get stuck many times. At last i found something that keep me busy and grow musicaly... RUclips is full of courses of songs or pentatonic "sh*t", but that gets you nowhere. This is the way ! Mess around with progressions and play both rhythm and fill leads !!!
Thank you so much again Dave. It's so inspiring and it's now very clear to me how to play this John chord progressions. Really love it. Just one small step closer to 'master' the John Frusciante style
Dave I regularly come back to your RUclips channel when Im down or lacking inspiration. You helped me so much man, it's unreal. I hope I bump into you one day in andertons
Dave you made me Feel good on a Day that the ER got all My Time today. Your Playing always Grabs My Feelings and Heart and Takes my feelings for a ride every time. Have a Great Day and Night. God Bless You and All Your family. You are a Star that I enjoy to watch Shine in the Night Sky.
This is an older video but I just wanted to say a big thank you! This is perfect for the stage I’m playing I’m at at this point. There are countless options with these progressions that can be explored for many years to come 👍 Also, in general, I love how you respect that people have different tastes. Even if some don’t like your approach, there are inevitable others who do.. and music really is an outlet like no other. Definitely special.
I like towards the end when your telling all of us that you think your not there yet with your guitar playing even though we could all disagree with that but ...i feel your emotions and connect with your soloing....i love putting in some ear buds and turning off all the lights and closing my eyes to your solos dave....for me it takes me to a different deminsion and not just the soloing either but also the little drum beat machine thing you play with, your totally painting a picture over the beat while complementing the beat itself, im curious to see you play some bass guitar one of these days and how to use it properly with a guitar and drum beat....and after watching so many of your videos and being a long time fan of your channel i have definitely noticed that you have a signature mark with your music, i cant really express it with theory but i notice you have this signature go to lick thats all yours and no one elses and its taken and used from all the chord progressions you have expressed in this video....i definitely have a good listening ear and i wish i could express your signature lick or go to thing but i cant, ill just hold it close and let someone else explain it....how to play like dave Simpson????
This was an absolutely wonderful demonstration Dave, I think as guitarists we forget to keep it simple and tend to complicate things when the answer is right in front of us. You are dead on about the limitless ability to create melodies over even simple chord progressions.🤘😎🎸
it makes me happy playing the things you thought me. thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. and you're a very likeable chap no need to explain yourself to anybody.
Hi Dave! Love your channel and your content is amazing. I was going to check out your channel for some old JF videos today, and this popped up! Can't wait! You are truly the premiere John Frusciante authority, your content is truly appreciated.
I was wondering about those licks by this Frusciante you are always mentioning, so this is a good lesson on them, thanks. Saves me figuring them out! Good one
That was the most inspirational guitar video I’ve seen in some time. Had to go grab my guitar and sit with my looper and imagination for about an hour. Thank you, sir.
Dave, thanks for All you do. It helps so much. I was looking for something to do different as I continue this journey. As for your playing and striving for better and to make people feel from your playing it just shows you as an artist in search for more, something, etc that artists must do. A true artist you must be and Are. Thanks for everything. Keep digging and playing. Cheers
I love your teaching style mate and the way your personality and passion for music comes through in spades. Not long discovered your awesome content so expect a few more gushy comments over the coming weeks! 😛
In my ignorance I have been hampered by the idea that sounding like something which already exists displays a lack of originality so I found what you have to say here very reassuring and informative. Thank you Dave
Only been playing 4 years I still take lessons my teacher is jazz , I also use your videos the one on the fret board helped me a lot turned a light on for me
Hey dave jeff here you dont know me i live in bc canada and i think were around the same age im 35 born in may of 1988 love your playing your really good i mostly play a gibson les paul into a clean amp with overdrive pedals in front end of a mesa mark v 35 1x12 combo i recently bought a ds-2 and swollen pickle great on their own but together they nail the slane intro solo tone with a bit of reverb and of coarse a strat with single coils i like the bareknuckle mothers milk pickups and for les paul bareknuckle the mule pickup set cheers dave jeff from bc canada!!!
I opened YT to look up something, totally not guitar related & this video came up. So I watched all 53 minutes of it & thoroughly enjoyed it. Ain't got a bleedin' clue what I was originally looking for though now 😂 Rock on, Tommy...🤙🏼 Lovely choice of notes btw , in that sweet intro
Thanks Dave, I love your videos and vibe. Thanks to you I can now play the bedroom lick. As a huge Hendrix and Frusciante fan I dig all your lessons and thoughts. Your making the world a better place one jam at a time.
Dave honestly have you ever thought about to bring a book out? I really dig your stuff and your teaching here! I would love to learn all that out from book that's written by you!
Very cool video Dave, I want to personally thank you because I just got out of bed to pick up my guitar and play it after with amp on at 4:00+ a.m., now I can't sleep, I'm just thinking of all the different ways to use these progressions and I just feel like jamming!
Thank you Dave. I am new to the guitar world. I like how you are very open minded. Yes, I do agree with you with John progression chords. They are very catchy and simple, and they do leave a lot of room for creativity.
Thank you Dave for this great tutorial! You hit this one out of the park man!! Your enthusiasm teaching this is awesome!! Just for the record, I get it. That's why myself and many others hang around with you. 😎🤘🎸
Really interesting video Dave. The way you showed the chord progressions in different styles, really shows that the sky is the limit with this stuff :)
My Goodness Dave I would love you to meet John Frusciante in person, interview him and jam out with him.. What a treat that would be for the world to see.
I would say the most iconic and original use of this Dm progression is on Soul to Squeeze, where he also uses Gm at the end. In general this progression is overused in popular songs nowadays, but the way he creates melody around those is not usual repetition. The Am-F-C-G for Don't Forget Me, the verse melody with reverb, is making it special even though the progression itself is popular. Lot to learn from him on conceptual level.
Hi Dave, I revisit many of your videos to help me improve my playing, and this will be one of those videos. So many great insights in this one, I particulalry liked the intro to 'Californication' from Slane castle one. Thanks as always.
That vi-IV-I-V progression is so overused in modern pop/rock songs...but you just perfectly demonstrated the greatness behind its popularity. Fantastic work mate!
I dont play alot of electric guitar, i am definitely in love with johns solo acoustics and love covering everything from niandra all the way up to some of his electronic music, but also doing my own thing as well because that style is what i connect too and i have my go to signature thingy as well with these progressions.....i want to start playing the electric guitar more, i know how to play well and come up with simple melodic runs but i haven't put no where near the amount of time practicing solos than i have practicing that old john sounding acoustics thats so simple and rewarding for me inside, it just makes me feel good inside and i enjoy using my voice as a instrument with it. Im sure you've seen all of johns live solo acoustic shows and man......thats what i really love.....but im starting to get this itch in my heart to wanna pick up the electric guitar more and more and dedicate myself to it because you've given me that itch in my heart by watching and listening to all your solos...not because of john but because of you Dave.....thank you very much
Thx bro!...Music and my expression through the guitar saved me also. And my biggest inspiration is Jimi Hendrix...By the way I've seen the Chilli Peppers 3 times in Chicago in the late 80s early 90s also in 2015...Chilli Peppers were also inspired by Hendrix....but my man for the past 5 years Ive been playing my guitar everyday, I cant put it down and its great to hear that someone else feels the same... There are some musicians in bands that have no musicianship and its a competition ... so I don't gig with people like that anymore... And thx for the videos man
Very enjoyable video. I hope your viewers have jammed along as I have done. OK I've only four strings. Its been a good exercise as I'm in dropped D tuning. Good one!!!
Dave un grand merci de partager votre savoir avec autant de générosité et d’humour dommage que le traduction ne soit pas disponible en français Passait de très belles fêtes de fin d’année ainsi que vos proches je réitère mes remerciements les plus sincères Bruno

Your very welcome and I'm so happy to read this. :)
마음을 위로해주네
Johns melody is truly like the way you explained it. "Here let me give you a hug for about 4 minutes.".......i love you Dave
Honestly, you are one of my favourite guitarists ever. I’m not even joking. Love your playing. In another era, you’d be heralded as one of the greats. I actually believe that.

I’m sorry for what happened to you. I’m glad you can still enjoy playing music.
@@jacobseraphin685 thanks Jacob , all is good brother. I’m greatful to be alive !
Legendary! Someday people will recognize your true emotional playing. You're this generation's guitar hero
Exceptional... love this.... Like I have said before you are one of the only guitarist on here that when I just casually watch a video makes me want to pick up my guitar and play it!

You made that guitar cry effortlessly over the progressions. Forever inspired by you and John, Dave
This is pure gold. Thank you so much Dave for this and all your other stuff. Just a pleasure to my ears and brain to watch your videos

I could stay here watching you talk and show about John's style for hours.
Dave is back on form as the guitar teacher you always wanted but could never find. I’d love to see more of these types of videos.
I love this! Just what i need right now!
Youre the reson i traded my old marshall for a line 6 catalyst and ive never been happier.
Man I love when you bend into those deep high notes & make the guitar cry.... they steal my soul. Sounds so so good! 🙏🏽
Those high range tones are beautifully crystalline..!!..👏👍👏
M8 no joke, you are easily my favourite guitarist at the moment😎
beautiful intro jam my dude

Dave, Great video!
Love this video! Best chord progressions ever imo. I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers in New Zealand for the first time last month and it was amazing!
Chords are the best way to cheat on creating melodic riffs. Ta for this snackette Dave.
Brilliant video Dave, really helpful- the rising progression in the Wet Sand chorus is so inspiring
Thank you Dave for this great tutorial! You hit this one out of the park man!! Your enthusiasm teaching this is awesome!! Just for the record, I get it. That's why myself and many others hang around with you. 😎🤘🎸
Wow.....that's a stunning intro solo!
I was just thinking that mate tone. Leics
Really interesting video Dave. The way you showed the chord progressions in different styles, really shows that the sky is the limit with this stuff :)

Awesome video Dave! I use a lot these kind of progressions combined with the two note kinda chords and I felt identified with most of the things you said!
Great video again Dave 👍.
