Also the only real Large cruisers ever built and to see actual combat. Her and her sister ship Guam got a combined 3 battle starts during WW2, their thrid sister Hawaii was never finished, but there was talk about turning her into a missile cruiser, but that never happened. They were first meant as a count to the IJN B65 (Azuma), but then got retasked as counters for the Schanrhorst sisters, but Alska and Guam arrived too late to fight the ships they were meant to fight.
I play my Alaska B, just like my Moskva and Stalingrad. At the start of the match I´m angled away and kiting ships. If they´re angled I use HE, broadside AP of course. As the game progresses, I start to push in and use my HP and radar to my advantage. The mistake I see people make in these three ships is that they push bow in at the very start of a match, thinking they can tank for days. If you do that, you´re gonna get focused at the start and you´re gonna die fast.
I got alaska some two years ago and I was honsetly dissapointed. The ship isnt as tanky, as accurate or simply as op as everybody said it was 4-5 years ago. Its not a tier 9.5. But thats not because alaska is bad. The game has changed and with subs and the supercarrier games from time to time they make this ship look so bad. Alaska is an amazing tier 9 ship. Probably best super cruiser at the tier maybe even better then stalin at tier 10. But matchmaker and he spam kills this ship in random battles. I have a comfortble 67% winrate on alaska in ranked and there it can really shine. If youre not planning to play lots of ranked in alaska dont buy it. Its not worth for random battles. Azuma is free and better for He Spam if you want a super cruiser.
"How did he get so much damage into me!?" Overmatch. It's always overmatch. When a gun only needs to be 386.1mm or higher to completely ignore large chunks of your armour it absolutely sucks. "But without overmatch cruisers would dominate!" See that's where a rework of overmatch would be best. Wouldn't it be so nice if overmatch could still deal damage but at a reduced level until enough shells had hit that section of the ship? Like imagine this one, armour overmatch was kind of a thing, though it had more to do with the penetration abilities of a shell and it's weight and shape than the raw size of it(even then it does seem a tad in question if overmatch was actually a thing, or if this was just penetration angles at play), but most armour also didn't just give out on the first shot unless it was spectacularly thin. So what if, and hear me out here. You had to damage saturate the bow/stern/casemate/ect before you could overmatch it and we adjust the HP values for the sections of the ship? Adding to this as well of shots that would normally overmatch cause overpen damage to those sections of the ship. So as of right now, Alaska has 3500 HP in her bow and 4200 HP in her stern. So before she could be overmatched in those sections she would need to take that much damage first. So facing down Iowa guns, Alaska would be able to take 3 hits to the bow at overpen damage before she could start to be overmatched on the bow. Or if the Iowa wanted to speed up the process and take more of the luck out of it, they could load the HE and then they only need to hit the bow twice to get the ability to then overmatch with their AP. This would also make overmatching side plating a lot more difficult, as it tends to count as "hull" and ships have a TON of that. So while you wouldn't be immune to damage to your hull, you would take reduced damage while properly angled. Now as for adjustments, I would move some of the hull HP into the bow/stern so that every cruiser had around 6k bow stern on the lightest of cruisers(the super lights), 7-8k on light cruisers(150/180mm) and 9-10k for CAs and Cruiser BCs. I'd also play around a bit with casemate values, though those could easily be taken from the absurd Citadel section to maintain values or just simply have more HP put into them. Those I would simply move to being on par with Battleships as they are now. As Battleships would also get improved section HP values. What this would do is mean that on average Superlights could take ~5 hits from ~406mm guns to their bow before it can be overmatched, and in the exact case of Jinan it would take ~13 shells before it's Hull could then be overmatched. CLs would be 6-7 hits to the bow, and CAs/BCs would take 8-9 hits. This would not change the overmatch formula only when it's actually applied. So we wouldn't suddenly have 100mm guns overmatching a saturated bow. Well unless they encounter a bow that is only 6mm thick. Not a perfect solution but a whole lot better than what we've got now. When the alternative is players getting punished for playing correctly, anything is better.
I absolutely agree a rework would be good. If we went with your idea I think there should be some notable indication for when that threshold is met. WoWS already lacks tutorials and explanations.
@@bradenhagen7977 Aye, I'd make the visual appearance of damage saturated armour a lot more clear, that would honestly be more indication of overmatch than we have now. News posts and tutorials would also almost certainty need to be made around it as well. If for no other reason than to keep veteran players informed on the change. I do doubt it will ever happen though, Wargaming seems content with overmatch the way it is.
I has been fortunate enough to drop an Alaska B from a SINGLE regular BF container years ago.. I already had the regular Alaska. Thanks for the doubloons WG! :) I really like this ship. Huge utility, decent tankiness and huge salvos... Great combination. Unfortunately she gets heavily focused down when spotted.
I got the Alaska when the Black Friday event started. I have to say that I am very happy with the ship and even though it might be a bit frustrating at times the fun you have outweighs the bad side of it
She is by no means powercrept whatsoever, beats on cruisers a ton and the ap does do a ton to bbs as well its just unforgiving as usual for cruisers and you have to have perfect ammo selection to be able to do (nearly) it all as expected
I was fully prepared to buy the Alaska this Black Friday but now I am holding out for a little longer on the off chance I get the mega pull from a free Black Friday container from the battle pass.
Did you see that Smolensk went for the minimum bid? I was incredibly surprised to see that. I assume that means there weren’t even 1500 people to submit a bid.
I love Alaska, it's truly a beast in ranked, but in my experience it gets reliably (and frustratingly) citadeled through the fore and aft athwartships from big BB shells overmatching the bow and stern
Exactly, my frustration with these is they are a jack of all trades, but the master of NONE. If situations are perfect, truly amazing. But I just don't do well in it compared to DM, Napoli, Petro, etc.
The biggest thing I hate about Alaska is that in the current meta of 30mm overmatch and HE spam at range she just sucks. You get spotted by a CV/DD/Sub while moving into a position and then you get instantly focused and burned to the waterline. Kiting is also painful because your ballistics and dispersion make your shells constantly miss where other CAs will just farm you to death with HE because of the DPM difference.

Alaska is not a small battleship, its a large crusier, emphasis on large, you're gonna soak up more shells at close distances, every BB in the game has overmatch on you, so you DO NOT, want to get close to real BB's
idk why people dont understand that. Theyre not battlecruisers like some say. They are classified as CB. Which are large cruisers. Theres a reason the navy continues to tell people not to call it that. Their armor is much thinner. I believe this comes from people hearing the term pocket battleships and equating it to actual BBs. A BC has much better armor than a pocket battleship which is really just a large cruiser with heavy guns. I guess the best analogy is a BC is a lighter armored BB with BB guns. A pocket battleship is a large cruiser with or near BB caliber guns but cruiser armor.
