This game was incredibly tense to play, there was actually a third tiebreaker question that got cut in the edit! Ultimately very proud of my team, we gave it everything
Fabulous match! My commiserations to the losing team - you put up a very good fight. Sad to see you go. Good luck to the winners moving on! Thank you so much, CP. Really appreciate you doing this every week. You're a star!!
At 24:35 Dorn's pronunciation of "Af Klint" made to sound like Af Klimt is in fact the correct Swedish pronounciation and should have been awarded 5 points - no tie-break. SOAS should go through..
Don’t think I’ve ever seen such an ending, and I understand there was even a third tiebreaker question not aired. Would love to hear what the UC archivists have to say about this nailbiter. Commiserations to the team leaving, it was a stellar performance by both teams tonight.
Of all episodes I've seen, this is the one where the teams looked like they were having the most fun! Obviously still tense, but a good amount of laughter
Wow!!! Extra exciting to have a rare tiebreak! Despite the neck and neck pace throughout, the last few minutes were excruciating! Well done to both teams for excellent performances, congrats to Durham. Great match, many thanks 😊
~SPOILER~ Wow, incurring a penalty in the tiebreaker round. SOAS’s Cameron Lambert, poor guy, will forever be haunted by that answer. Whatever you do, _no_ alpaca scarves, sweaters or socks, no matter how luxurious, as gifts for him. Congratulations to the winning team, of course, who rallied to close up a 55-point gap in four-and-a-half minutes 25:18-it was like watching Rich Strike come from behind to win the 2022 Kentucky Derby but with Epicenter _stumbling_ at the finish line-and heartfelt condolences to the other team. Losing is one thing but a self-inflicted loss-assuming Durham might not have correctly answered “Llama” without “Alpaca” preceding it-is something else.
lama: (noun) a Tibetan or Mongolian priest of Lamaism. (noun) llamas. llama: (noun) wild or domesticated South American cud-chewing animal related to camels but smaller and lacking a hump
Hello again! What a match! Shame someone had to lose, and especially, lose the way they did. This was a back-and-forth affair that had an anticlimactic ending. Be interesting to see what the winners do with their second chance. I was impressed by how they got their act together to tie it. I had counted them out already. Not so fast my friend! My best to both teams, and to each individual.
SOAS closely missed a few questions, which in the end proved fatal. Even the last tiebreaker was clearly a tossup between the llama and the alpaca, and unfortunately, Lambert picked the lesser known alapaca. Anyways, this was the most nail-biting matches in a long time and both teams did well. Really tragic to see SOAS go, when even in the first round heats, they missed a direct entry due to a mispronunciation and some avoidable errors.
Good match... as always someone somewhere is always shouting an answer... here: PHEROMONES!!! (but only because I'm veterinarian working in behavior, I work with those everyday xD). bonus: Lourdes!, also also: MAKEMAKE because I'm Chilean and for heaven's sake it's MAKEMAKE as Amol said it, and also because of the same: LLAMA!!!! And it HURTS to lose Dorn, she was adorable applauding at the start.... ='(
That really kicked off in the last few minutes after initially ebbing/flowing. Amol seems more spritely and got over his illness. Albeit that was the lowest scoring match of the series at 295 aggregate. 15/27 and 13/27 bonus rates, along with 5 penalties will help contribute. Here's to hopefully a high-scoring R2 which begins next week ;).
I never attended any form of higher education post secondary school- despite all that,i got over half the questions correct. How is it that yours truly, who works a manual labour job, has a higher intellect than people going to university? Bit strange
@@ellentronicmistress4969 People who don't go to unversity generally do Keats, the child of a poor ostler who went to college to learn medicine and nothing more, was a far greater poet than the affluent and priveliged wordsworth, whose poetry is mostly artifical and insipid Howard Philips Lovecraft dropped out after high school yet was a complete autodictat with a superb knowlege of english literature with an emphasis on weird fiction Shakespeare was the son of a glover, and never attended university- Ben Johnson was a bricklayer and a mercenary and never attended university, yet his and the bard's works are remembered to this day while the writings of many a pampered aristocrat who went to oxford or cambridge are completely forgotten. what was the question?
Crazy and I can't imagine the level of stress you guys were dealing with!
This was brilliant, both teams were excellent and I really wish both had a place in round two....I applaud both of you
Why were the points not deducted from the team who gave the first incorrect answer. IDU?
@@PetroicaRodinogaster264because the question had been fully asked so not an interruption.
gutted that we got eliminated but it couldnt have been closer! well done team SOAS :)
One of the best episodes for a long time. Two very good teams
Lambert has honored all nerds with his LOTR loremastery
that ending was exhilarating
Lol the deciding tiebreaker question was "What South American animal looks like a camel?"
"Oops sorry, it's the other one"
OMG for Amol's voice to start going hoarse near the end... So much love to him and it's also such a testament to how hard both teams were playing.

Is that similar to the letter 'n' in Istanbul which is universally pronounced as 'm'?
Could they challenge the decision, I wonder?
No way. Congratulations to both teams. In this kind of competition, there are no winners or losers. Thanks CP for uploading this episode
Thanks Cosmic P!
An exciting game indeed! I can't see Durham ultimately holding the trophy but you never know!
What an extraordinary run by Durham when it looked over. Thank you CP!

Durham reminding us that in University Challenge, 55 points is just a 3-possession lead
and that recovery could be done in 2 minutes like Durham did from 25:17 to 27:17 timestamp
Incredible comeback from Durham
Thrilling finish. Edge of the seat stuff. Congrats to the winners. Thank you CP.
I hate episodes like this - i.e. episodes in which I like both teams very much. Very sad that either of them had to lose.
Wow! What a great showing by both teams.
Cracking contest! Well played, both teams.

Impressive showing from Durham, especially as they seem to be moonlighting as members of 80s bands.
Tiebreaker episodes are always thrilling to watch
What a cracking episode!

What a HORRIBLE way to lose!
Not to be that person but garlic in Korean is 마늘 (romanised as maneul) not 마눌 (romanised as manul) as shown in the episode
Better get on to Google translate about that
This is absolutely the place to be "that person", thanks for sharing the correction.
Spoiler Blocker.
2 tie breaks is very rare
What a comeback! Negging to lose the game has to be one of the hardest ways to go, but super well fought from SOAS!
Oh dear I think that every time the word Lama is mentioned somebodies internal monologue is going to go DOH! .. cheers for the upload.

15 points Durham had lost along the episode, which could've cost them the spot. Luckily they got to a tie break.

Thrilling. Lambert forever will remember no, it was the other one.
SOAS really has a way of talking themselves out of a right answer :(

fantastic match!
What a nailbiter
The captions call Oaxaca “Hausteca”.
PS: Sad to know that in these "long" matches, whole sections are cut where no team can answer.... made me think how much is lost in between. =(
And now, 30 minutes of why I should have gone to a better university...😉
I thought that when Durham said the wrong answer downward they lost…..
Oh dear, what a horrible way to lose.
Ella Dorn has my heart
great match
Durham Roberts what a chad! Great comeback.
What a banger
Wow what a game
why do they say pass when there's no penalty for giving wrong answer
Very often, time is wasted when teams try to guess the answer to a question they know nothing about.
Dorn is quite attractive
