- Josh Kalis, the legend who has sustained one of the most profound careers in skateboarding, turned 45 today. He sat down for a series of interviews with us for our Life On Video series, and we're honored to be able to show you the complete edit here.
Since his early days with Toy Machine to Alien Workshop and now DGK, Kalis always stayed true to his vision of pure professional skateboarding. And in a world changing to accommodate contests and corporate skating, Kalis stuck to the streets, staying true to those aspects of skating that made him fall in love with it in the first place. That’s why to this day you can still find him skating downtown with as many skaters as possible, having fun and filming new projects. Today as a brand ambassador and tenured skateboarder, nothing but respect can be thrown his way because Kalis forged a legacy by his own rules. We’re all forever indebted to Kalis for reminding us that the next time you feel pressured to participate in something that doesn’t feel right, you don’t have to-because skateboarding is about doing what you love. Josh Kalis truly dedicated his life to skateboarding.

happy birthday Josh Kalis 😍
AWS era!
THE DC VIDEO WITH THE TRACK FULL CLIP COMPLIMENTING HIS STYLE IN THAT WHOLE PART!
Happy Birthday Josh. My introduction to you was seeing you in PHOTOSYNTHESIS. it's one of my favorite video parts in one of the earliest skate videos i'd seen in the first year that i started skateboarding. you've got one of the sickest styles out there. cheers!
Hbd! Someone get him a pack of Newport’s an a 40 🛹👊🏽
He once sent me a box of DGK boards for complimenting him on SLAP magazine forums. Guy is true class and a great example of a professional skateboarder. I still buy Kalis decks because he did that 10 years ago.
Yes Josh is a good dude. I grew up skating love since 94 till it got torn down. Josh was always a cool cat. Did alot for us a bit younger heads that were always there.
Met him at LOVE and he bummed a smoke from my friend's dad and just chilled with us for a bit and was super welcoming and friendly. For a group of teenagers from Ohio, it was one of the coolest moments. Happy Bday, Josh!
wher are you from in Ohio?
@@ConnorHolbrook419 small town in northwest Ohio, about an hour west of Toledo
@@rbtdoster that’s funny I’m about an hour east of Toledo
I got a ticket back in the day at Love Park from an undercover cop wearing Kalis shoes!
As a grand rapids Michigan skater I miss chasing his g wagon to holland Michigan. I used to have his name and number in my phone to go skate. He brought me to his house and met his daughter and wife. I'll never forget those memories and I miss you Josh. I doubt he remembers me but I'll never forget how to be the man skating with big J.
catch him at clemente in GR bro he always skating there with the premier bois
When I was a kid I remember seeing all those Magazine Ads with Josh Kalis. He is like top 5 for me of all time
Yeah man he’s so good and such a good personality. Loved watching him growing up through til this day.
Kalis, the gifted skate legend. So much respect
That story about leaving his bag behind to get on the plane shows what a good guy he is. He could of asked everyone to leave a few things but instead he made sure the girls were okay and ditched all his stuff. True legend
Him and Stevie are my favorite skaters of all time
Their not mine, not that it matters or anything lol
@@therealwewin huh? Whats the point tho bro?
This was an incredible piece. The Berrics got me into skateboarding, but I haven’t watched in years. This was worth the return
GR loves Kalis. Thank you from everyone in the mitt.
Few things get me hyped more than seeing Kalis skate on some craggy concrete or asphalt in the middle of winter.
HBD to a legend.
Kalis parts always have the best music
Music always bangs! So does the skating
Idk about boombox song lol
As a skater and skateboard company owner out of the Dallas Texas area this video and Josh Kalis's story is truly and inspiration to me to never give up on your dreams and keep pursuing them no matter what happens
Happy birthday Josh Kalis
Kalis, your inspiration made it to Alberta, Canada. Thanks for the motivation man.
-mat
That tre flip over the cans is still One of the best looking ones ever filmed. What a beauty
You know this dude is Michigan till death by the hand map
my thoughts 100%
Dude is an OG Nuff said. Happyy Birthday homiez!! Thanks for being a real one.
Happy birthday Kalis! Had a brief interaction with Kalis at Clemente Park in Grand Rapids a few years back. I asked how he stayed healthy with skateboarding after so many years as I've been battling with back issues since my late 20's and he went into stretches that helped him stay limber. Humble down to earth guy and still kills it. I was recently diagnosed with major disc herniation in my lower back and am pretty bummed. I still try to skate when I can and live vicariously through videos like these and trying to stay positive through the rough days. I still remember ordering my first "real" skateboard deck from CCS catalog, dialing into the slick version of the full spectrum from Alien Workshop back around 95' or 96'.
Happy Birthday Kalis. I didn’t realize I had such a photographic memory. I can watch your parts and call your tricks to this day; Particularly the Love era. Still one of the most incredibly distinct styles in all of skateboarding history. The DC Video hype was real. Well done to The Berrics content development team for putting such compelling material together. 🤟
These Life on Video projects are always so emotionally gripping and inspiring as *fuck*. Thank you for these.
This is gonna be gnarly 🤘🏻
Favorite Josh moment is his Kalis in Mono part, just they was his style matched with that sick intro groove of the Rolling Stones track was and still is so bangin!!
Happy Birthday Josh.
Happy birthday to my favorite skater ever! Much love Josh Kalis!
Big up to Kalis 1 of the OGs still repping skateboarding
Believe me Josh, a whole generation loved your DC Video Part like every other Part you filmed!
One of my fav skaters of all time, true icon.
Always one of my favorite skaters! I'm 40, my best friend and I used to watch Heavy Metal every day and go skate! Started w huge baggy pants and tiny wheels. Good to see you doing good man!
Josh is a rad dude. No ego, just a down to earth dude. He gives new product away at the local skatepark in grand rapids to the kids quite often. Happy to call him a friend of mine.
Josh is the man. Grew up skating love from 94 till it closes for good. Stevie, Josh, Ricky, all the heads looked us younger heads out and brought us up. Respect.
His heavy metal part is still one of my absolute favorites. Look up that toy machine video if you read this
Fascinating story and great to hear him speak in so much detail. Seems like a very down to earth and humble skater. respect
Happy birthday Legend!
So surreal watching this after getting to meet/skate/speak with you brother Josh...Thanks so much for staying rad and here's a little more from me...
Yeah, Josh!!
Thank you Berrics for doing this. This was lovely 🙂
11:12 Such a great story. Homie is about to pass up on literally the opportunity of a lifetime just cus Jamie Thomas skated a big board with big wheels LOL what a ledge
Thanks for explaining. I thought he was contemplating stealing his board with big wheels.
Happy birthday bro !! We have the same birthday today and I always looked up to you growing up skateboarding love park I would watch your video parts over and over 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 today is a good day to be alive !!
Great stuff right here. A master in his craft. Cool to hear the back story and where he came from. And those 360 flips, man, could watch them on repeat for hours!
Love these behind the scenes stories. Thank you 🙏
Bummed off his test edit,
1 of his greatest parts
Right? His DC part is one of my all-time favorites.
Yeah I was thinking fuck that’s actually one of my all time favorite parts of any video lol :/
As a grom in the 90's in Australia, his Timecode part will always be my favourite part. That was my introduction to his skateboarding and I must have watched that part hundreds of times before I went skating to amp me up. Happy birthday bro.
If you don’t know, now you know!
This was so refreshing to watch. Always loved Kalis. Took me way back.
Great video the persistence and Colossal Talent of Kalis makes him one GNARLY skater. Now at 45 he still sessions harder than most. Respect to the man.
I have skated since 1985 and growing up in Oklahoma, I watched alot of Kalis , the 411, the Alien stuff . I always liked Josh K. Skating NARLY concrete like we have here! This was very good!!
Thanks for the early love during the beginning of Toy Machine/Huntington skate park days before it was officially open! Josh Rules🤘🏼
Happy Birthday Josh! I still remember watching your 360 Flip on the Toy Machine video with the sunset….still inspired. 🤙🏻
that tre flip over the street gap was so impactful to me because when that 411 came out, it looked like he made the board do a double backflip and the flow with his arms mid trick was so sick looking and i'd never seen anything look like that before. i must've watched it in slow motion like 100 times. i studied every single frame.
This was awesome I feel like the nine club is where skaters go to talk about how they got where they are but it's good to see other people doing similar shit. I love hearing about the history of skaters, I missed out on a lot of that shit cos skating wasn't really a big thing in ireland till recently
dope to see a career in skateboarding presented this way. Longevity in skating isn't easy and whats rad is that he never hopped on trends and stayed true to what he believes in.
Amazing story for an amazing person. I'm so blessed to be part of this community
This is a great video. So many of us grew up with troubled family/school lives, and when we found the skate community, it was full of some of the raddest people. Lots of super artistic, smart, hilarious dudes, who just came to skate. We left life behind us, and just spent the entire time trying to learn one more trick and hype each other up. I know we all looked like losers and bums, but we just didn’t fit into the system... we didn’t want to. Now that I’m in my 40’s, I’ve returned to skating, and I love it just as much. The bad asses are all so young to me, but they’re still the same. If my old ass does something that pushed me, they get hyped. No attitude or ego (mostly). Just a bunch of guys (and way more ladies too now, which is awesome to see), doing what I used to... living in the moment, and pushing their limits. Josh’s story could be so many of ours, just without the pro part. Skate for life, and to live. I can’t wait to introduce my daughter to it. ❤️🔥
Happy birthday Josh! 45 and still ripping with style, which is much more than I can say for myself. I always loved new Kalis footage as I knew the music would be dope too. Sixth Sense part forever.
He looks 25 all day
I remember when he skates with Stevie Williams at the love park !! Amazing! blessings happy bday legend!
one of the best styles and best trick selections of all time!
thank you for this BERRICS, happy birthday legend!
Josh is one of my fav OG's. Glad to still see him ripping, Him and Jamie Thomas are what got me into skating.
That was so dope. Brings back memories
i just watched all of his epicly laterd a few weeks ago for first time in years. now this pops into my needs feed. guess i know where the next 47 mins are goin
Shoutout to Josh, Happy birthday! . Hung out with you when we were like 14. You went on vacation with my family to Rotation Station when Templeten and crew were there. Think I quit skating when you got grounded for months and didnt have anyone left to really skate with. Always knew you would make it in Skateboarding as you just had that gift of no fear. Watching you hit the front side 180's down the alpine gap at like 14. "old movie Theatre" Anyways have a great birthday today. Old friend.......... Cory
Josh Kalis changed my world view in '01. Dude and his homies have been deeply influential.
This was such a good video!! Takes me back. I’m ready to go skate now..
This was put together so well and could possibly be the best thing Ive watched in 2021 when comes to skating. Dont take that the wrong because there has been some great parts and team videos that are gnarly as it gets. Reasons why I'm all about this is it's basically a mid length doc that features one of the most rad rippers to ever step on a board from the time period of skating that has strongly influenced skateboarding where it is in the present. Dude...Kalis was right in the middle of 3/4 most important skate scenes ever_ fukin crazy... I hope to see more film projects like this in the future... Highly entertaining and could have watched 2 more hours.....
This was so good to watch. I'm not gonna front, im no skater but first time i heard of Kalis was on a damn car dvd called Mischief 3000. He had a sick silver beamer. So to finally hear his story was really interesting. Kalis is a G!
ya he had a 99 e36 he had it suped up too
nice! His epicly later'd was one of my favorites. Love to see it.
I’m in the background at the Hubba hideout footage. Must’ve been 14 then. I remember it going down like it was yesterday. I hung out at FTC all the time, skated Pier 7. I remember Joey and Andy were the dudes holding it down at FTC. Magical time. I wish I could’ve done more then. But I made sure I was in the city every weekend for years. That’s where the magic was.
East coast style at its best!!! Kalis, Stevie, and Cardona brothers!
Josh Kalis fan ever since the baby carriage footage in Photosynthesis (at the time the video came out) & played that VHS almost everyday (along with Rodney vs Daewon - Round 2) for years to follow before going out to hit the turf on the Darkstar wheels! The concrete jungle never looked the same ever since because looking at a city through skater's eyes is different... you know what I mean?! Happy birthday Josh... keep on destroyin'!!
great content. would love to see more like this
Thank you!
Dude I got chills when gangstarr - full clip starting playing. Fuck that's such a sick song for a skate video
He ain't lying about Barcelona. I lived there for a year and a half and every stop on the train is a skate spot. Skater's dream out there. If you skate and can afford to travel out there, GO! JUST GO!
When i was in high school (around 2000) i saw this portrait of Josh on the internet just posing for the camera holding his skateboard wearing the coolest gear and shoes n stuff and i was like "I wanna look like THAT!"
Regardless, of course, of how he was (and is) on my top 10 favorite skaters of all time...code!
cheers from Tel Aviv
MAZAL TOV!
Awesome way to put it man! Inspiration for anyone is everything!
Never met him since I live in northern Canada but I skated/dressed nothing but kalis DC and Alien for years. Cinched my swishy cargo pants just above the calf and the whole 9. ❤️❤️❤️
Kalis is a straight hustler man.
Happy birthday to the honorary winner of the Great Josh Battle of 2021!
True legend! Kalis inspires me to keep pushing
Such a big Kalis fan, everything. From him being a full on skate rat, his skating being so technical and amazing. His humbleness, him puttin his homies on, everything.
Kills me to know he doesn’t like his part in the DC video tho, one of my top 5 all time.
Really Really Nice Thanks a Lot Kalis 👊❤
Him and Stevie got me into skating. Forever my favorite skater
Sick life story!!! Brought me back to the day🤟
Absolute legend…
Was one of the dudes I looked up to growing up…
Along with Stevie of course
I remember your 411 with that song. Man I’m 37 and want to skate again.
GREATNESS!
38:40 is one of my favorite 3 flips of all time, I don't care if its mid line, it just looked so good. I always remember that one.
DBC.. Daily Blessings Coming!
Thank You ALL for Everything, Everyday!!
I WISH I COULD MAKE SKATEBOARDING MY
LIFE and Be Successful!!
Happy Birthday Josh, met you in SF through Johnny F and Brian Y and the two Chicago dudes I met at the hostel and got to ride with you, Satva, and the twins Alex and George. We went to the bridge blocks and someone filmed some of Brian's lines (Positive dudes, everyone, and I think it was Josh driving us through the streets at about 70 MPH hahaha.)
I forgot about that Roger Browne photo. 6:10 I remember seeing that in a magazine sometime in the early 00's and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. There's not too much I can find of that dude, but there's another photo of him doing a sick method launch off something. That LOVE boardslide was 1986, apparently.
Edit: apparently there is more Roger Browne stuff out there, and I just spelled his name wrong in the search the first time. Even a short interview with him on vimeo; gotta watch that.
I love all this history stuff. Kalis rules. Happy birthday, style king.
Been a big fan since I started skating in the 90’s
I literally skate the way I do because of kalis so much love and respect to one of the greats
What a great video!!
i watched this video and went to skate after. so good. kinda put me in that mindset ...just skate, skate and skate.
the line at 31:00 with the cinched pants is peak dopeness. one of the top 5 skate moments in my eyes. illmatic line.
That's amazing! My first car was an '87 Accord!
Josh FOREVER..
such a dope documentary ❤🔥
I remember skating LOVE New Years day 2003 and it was awesome. Cops walked by and said Hi and let people skate the day. Other times we got arrested but it didn't matter it was a good time.
The hero pro sk8 who was inspired me until now . I love to see him skate.
I’m actually a little surprised I never ran into Kalis as we used to drive from Detroit to Chicago to night skate all the time around the same time he was
