  • This MSI Afterburner tutorial shows you how to overclock your PC GPU (Nvidia & AMD) safely to boost performance in all games. This overclocking beginners guide will cover the basics you’ll need to achieve the best GPU overclock. Benchmarks will also be shown to demonstrate the GPU overclocking performance gain you can expect. An overclocking comparison will be made between overclocking your graphics card manually & automatically as well as the benefits. If you want to automatically overclock your GPU, I give you a short MSI Afterburner OC (Overclock Scanner) tutorial. If you’d like a Nvidia performance tuning guide using the Nvidia performance overlay, or a tutorial on how to undervolt your gpu, let me know! Could also make a guide on how to overclock your CPU & RAM safely. Have fun overclocking your Asus, Nvidia, MSI, AMD, Gigabyte, EVGA, ZOTAC, PNY, Sapphire, XFX (etc) GPUs and I hope you enjoy the video!

    MSI Afterburner
Exploring and exceeding the limits of your graphics card might sound scary, but it’s actually easier than you think. MSI Afterburner Overclocking tools provide easy and precise access to your GPU settings. While increasing your GPU’s clock frequency and voltage settings, the fan speed control will enable you to find the perfect balance between performance and temperature.
    MSI Afterburner sliders
    - The Core Voltage slider displays the current master GPU core voltage. Depending on your graphics card mode, the voltage can be represented either explicitly or as an offset added to base voltage.
    - The voltage control is locked by default due to safety reasons for example, if you’ve unlocked voltage control in the bios when overclocking your CPU. When GPU settings synchronization mode is enabled in advanced properties, any changes apply to the master GPU are also applied to all similar GPUs installed on your system. Voltage control is only available on limited sets of graphics card models. If Afterburner doesn’t allow you to unlock voltage control or unlock voltage monitoring, this probably means your GPUs voltage cannot be regulated by this function. Do NOT tick force constant voltage.
    - The Power Limit slider displays the GPU’s power limit. When GPU synchronization mode is enabled, any changes applied to the master GPU are also mirrored to all similar GPUs installed on the system.
    - The Temperature (Temp.) Limit slider is linked to the Power Limit slider.
    - The Core Clock (MHz) Slider displays the current master GPU core clock. Depending on your graphics card model, the clock can be represented either explicitly or as an offset added to base clock. Please remember the minimum allowed shader to core clock ratio is limited by hardware.
    - The Fan Speed slider allows you to either manually or automatically control the GPUs fan speed.
    - If the apply settings at Windows Startup button If enabled, it will apply the current core voltage, power limit, temp limit, core clock, memory clock and fan control settings when Windows starts.
MSI OC Scanner / overclocking scanner test and scan features
    1. Move the sliders for Core Voltage, Power Limit and Temp Limit all the way to the right. Click 'settings' and adjust your fan curve as directed in this video.
    2. Start the OC Scanner by clicking on the button left of the “Core Clock (MHz)” text as highlighted below to open the Voltage/Frequency Curve window.
    3. Scanning is the actual process described above where the algorithm will determine the highest stable frequency on 4 different voltage levels. This process should take around 15 minutes before presenting you with its conclusions. The value of the Core Clock in Afterburner should now show “Curve” instead of a number.
    4. After running the Scanner, it's recommended to run the Test option. The Test script will verify the stability of the profile generated by the OC Scanner and provide the results in a ‘confidence level’. Personally I haven't see any other number than 90%.
    5. Apply the OC Scanner values by clicking the Apply button in Afterburner. You can save the values in a profile as well, in case you want to switch between default values and your OC profile. You can do this by clicking on the Save Icon on the bottom right of Afterburner. The numbers on the left of the icon will start to flash to indicate that you can choose which number you would like to save this profile under. Once you choose a number by clicking on it, that button will become an active profile. This means you can easily switch back to default values by clicking the reset button, but also load up your OC profile by clicking on the profile number and then Apply.
Congratulations, you have just overclocked your graphics card!

Honestly, you deserve more attention + subscribers. Out of 90% of all tech RUclipsrs, you are purely the only one who properly explains everything in such good detail while every other RUclipsr goes: Do this, do that and done! (And even then, sometimes when you follow their guides they have no idea themselves of what they're doing).
Thank you for your guides, it has massively improved my gaming performance, especially your Nvidia Control Panel guide.

I'm really happy that the settings helped you out dude! I understand what you mean because when I turn to RUclips to find something out, it's pretty hard to find a straight answer sometimes. I wish more people who made tutorials could explain what they were doing and why because it really gives people more confidence that the recommendations actually work, especially if you can show what settings do and how they work! Thank you for your kindness and for taking the time to write a comment. Really appreciate it!

I also have a 2070 and I can get 200 on the core and 800 on the memory. My power limit can increase by 14%. This gives me an overall boost of about 11% over my stock settings. It's just a basic gigabyte model. I deshrouded it and I have a open design case. I've loved overclocking for years and MSI afterburner is such an awesome tool. Great video👍.

I got the same error message you did and I'm using "Afterburner version 497.09" guess they never sorted it. I'm using your tutorial to stop my pc from crashing as every time I play a game it crashes with my GPU at 50°C so in doing this it should allow to run the graphics I want at a higher temp and stop crashing.

Hello Shogoz! In the nvidia control panel under "Adjust desktop size and position" Which scaling mode do you recommend? I heard No scaling has lower input delay but I've heard the same for Aspect ratio. I would love to hear your thoughts on this, thank you so much!

    • @shogoz
      @shogoz  3 года назад +5

For me I play a lot of old games so I have 'integer scaling' selected to make text and other things in those games look crisper - I can't remember what the default used to be without changing everything back but I'd probably use 'no scaling' if I play newer games and 'full screen' if I noticed black borders playing older ones. Hope your weekend is going well man!

I have a gtx 750 ti and it currently has the following configuration +0 core clock and -390 memory clock, when I try to set the memory clock to +0 it starts to have artifacts do you know there is any possible solution, or was it just me who screwed up and now the gpu is with less memory clock. Thanks and sorry for my english i put in google translator.

    Shogoz,
I've been watching a few of your videos (this one and the control panel) and they have been super helpful in teaching me a boat load of information. Thank you for not only that but being able to hold my attention.. I'm currently having the same issues you were having with afterburner @10:23 area.. this is with I believe the 4.6.4 version.. this being said, are you able to tell me how to safely download the version you've had success with? (I.E.; 4.6.2)
    Thank You :)

Hi Braden! Sorry you're experiencing issues with the automatic overclock :/ I really thought that by now MSI would have fixed this issue. Do you have a Nvidia GPU? If you do and you have the geforce experience in-game overlay (Alt + Z), you can click 'Performance' on the front page (above where your screenshot/video gallery is located). Then, in the 'Performance Tuning' section there's a button you can press next to 'Enable automatic tuning' and this will do exactly the same thing that a successful automatic overclock would do in MSI Afterburner

@shogoz hey fellow oceania brother, just had a quick question if you wouldn't mind (in case you see this comment). I've OC'ed my 7700k CPU and probably tweaked the core voltage you mentioned on your video, I was wondering if I should set my 1080ti core voltage to 100% on the MSI Afterburner program and try doing tests with it again? I left it at 0% and best I can do is 40 for core clock and ~120ish for memory clock on Kombustor. I feel like these are really low numbers and is this because I have core voltage at 0%?
I don't want to touch/move anything around too much yet until I get some feedback and answers for now I guess. Thanks for the videos, I binged like 3-4 of them while I was tweaking my PC today and they were all informative and entertaining, have a good one! Cheers from NZ

All gpus are different, so if those are the clockspeeds u got, they're probably right.
I assume increasing the voltage also increases potential clockspeeds but havent tested myself as my card is a toaster

on the scan succeeded line of the overclock scan it doesn't say avg. core overclock and memory overclock mhz, it just says average overclock is 57MHz, nothing else. Is this something w/the newer version of msi afterburner?
