FINALLY!! Someone who actually talked about the true differences between the various plastics (Stiffness, flexibility, grip, etc.), along with their equivalent in other brands. THANK YOU!!
Yupp Simon lizotte himself just gave you the big shout out for helping him learn about mvp discs. Check out the Nick and Matt show that Simon just got interviewed on. 👍
Cheers to engineering! I'm a mechanical engineer. I was drawn to the overmolds because of the science behind it but actually ended up switching away a couple years later because of my inability to impart the greater snap that the discs require compared to a single mold disc. I'm glad that you mentioned that part because I feel like these discs aren't necessarily for everyone. People with a very short acceleration period (better snap) on their throw will have the most success with them. That being said, I think their drivers, being flat and enhanced by the gyro effects, are easily the best discs on the market for forehand throws because they are easy to grip and they fight off-axis torque really well.
Given that forehands suffer from far lower spin rates than backhands, there is a greater discrepancy between flippy and stable discs for forehand throwers, albeit very slight. I personally love my photons for flicks, and I'm very sad about losing my Nitro, what a disc it was. I agree that the lower profile makes them awesome feeling in the hand though. I absolutely love my new fireball and volt for forehands too! Also props to you for not being a failed engineer like me (material science) lol
I suspect that the denser outer rim will benefit more on discs that you want to just fly flat, like a driver you'd want to just go straight and far. And for correcting slight angle mistakes when you intended to throw flat. And that they may actually be an impediment to shot-shaping, where you want it to keep an angle. Gyrocospic effect will always have something tend to go back to horizontal (or vertical). So I wouldn't use this concept for every disc in my bag.
I used to play 3-4x a week back in the late 1990s but then stopped completely. Fast forward to a couple months ago and a brand new course opened up 1/2 mile from my house. I've been obsessed!! My favorite discs are the Axiom and I have 6 or 7 of them already. Just trying out a few different ones for now. Great video!!!
I have a Piwakawaka in the glow plastic from RPM. It charges fast and very bright, but discharges quickly as well. Eclipse 2.0 is the best glow that I've used so far.
This has to be one of the more informative breakdowns of MVP plastics, that I have ever seen. Great video!! I became a fan of MVP back in 2014. The Neutron Shock was my first signed ace, which 1st sparked my interest. I'm a collector as well.
Im kinda jelly, but congrats! my first investment with mvp (2012-2015?) was a red neutron shock! never hit a ace with it, but I still have it! basically is a roller now and faded to almost a orange color
I am a marketing success story with MVP. I never thought to have tried the disc brand until James won worlds. The first one I bought was a proton axiom mayhem and I IMMEDIATELY fell in love with how the disc felt in my hand and the snap it had on release. Especially since I am forehand dominant off the tee. The Gyro technology really helps me dial in a shot and just feels so smooth almost like petting a puppy out of the hands. I don’t think I will use any other brands for drivers now. I’d try the other discs but my local disc golf store can’t keep envy’s in stock long enough. I wonder why that is lol
Envies are AWESOME throwing putters, imo the best backhand throwing putter ever. If you have a smooth forehand, you can flick them, but they're too deep for a lot of people. I have to throw mine extra smooth, and it only goes 250' ish for me. I bought my first MVP disc because I liked James and was curious to see if his switch was a good move, and now I'm hooked too! Glad I got my envy before he won worlds!
Last year, I bought a Neutron Relay on a whim and I loved that disc so much that now I only throw MVP! It's my favorite disc ever and now I bag several. I'm excited to try MVP's other plastics--currently my lineup only includes Neutron, Fission and Proton. Thanks for the video from a fellow MVP fan!
Best explanation of this unique style disc I have seen. I got my first Envy Electron Firm in a used bin(still virtually new) and fell in love. Really like the shallow profile and wanted to know more about the dynamics. Really good example with the spinning tops!
thanks for this video, just bought my first MVP disc, its an Axiom Hex, threw it this week two days. Love it, love it, love it. Flies like a dream. Effortless distance. I'm sold on it. I might switch to all MVP/Axiom discs.
Love to hear an engineer talk about MVP's technology. I see lots of folks with opinions about how the Gyro tech affects flight, but what about rollers? Would the Gyro technology make the discs more or less susceptible to rollaways?
That's an interesting point. From an engineering point of view, a gyro disc with higher moment of inertia will resist initial rolling. But if it does get up to speed, it will want to keep rolling. So in the end it probably cancels out as some will stop earlier and others will roll for longer.
@@DiscGolfDownUnder late reply here, great video. My go-to mids are the Axiom Paradox and Hex. They have similar flight patterns, but when they roll, they tend to keep going.
riddle this: does the high-density overmold, with lighter weight flight plate, cause a "hoop" effect that allows the disc to deform more than a standard disc when it hits the ground, reducing rollaways?
Thanks so much for this review! I was Just about to ask about plastic stability in your last vid. I like throwing plastic on the understable side as opposed to dropping a few grams. I've been bagging a plasma Envy for the past few years and it's my go--to approach putter. I found it interesting that it is compared to something like G-Star. I have found that discs in G-Star are a bit too floppy for my taste. I haven't found this with MVP and I'm guessing it's due to the overmold giving it some structure. Love your videos!
Great video. My favourite plastic is Eclipse 2.0. I have an Envy and a Reactor in that plastic. I cant wait for more molds to be availible in it. I live in Finland so it is very dark for half of the year so I play a lot of glow rounds. The only glow discs that are worth it are Kastaplast and MVP eclipse 2.0. In my opinion Eclipse 2.0 is a little better than Kasta glow.
An aussie aerospace engineer who plays disc. My American cool meter is busted. Also, all my streamline discs are tough a heck, easily outlast my other discs and still fly great
BIGGEST tip here, Axiom are usually variations of MVP discs, almost like a beat in version of the same mold (wrath is a beat in tesla / mayhem to octane / tenacity to catalyst / etc) im shocked you didnt say this in the video
Awesome videos! Thank you for sharing, this was super helpful to me! I had just switched over and wanted to try MVP for the weight distribution. Thank you for explaining the science behind it and how it affects the game. Really appreciate the knowledge! Keep it up
Fair play Matt, 3:41 man went from chilling with Jeremy Corbyn and Jeffrey Epstein to shooting blanks with Merzut Ozil round his gaff genuinely sound tosser as well
I have moved from a Trilogy heavy bag to a bag thats about half MVP/half Lat64 (with a couple other utility discs) and I feel like my game has taken off this year. Insanity and Wave are now probably my 2 most thrown discs period. I have hit personal records on all my mainstay courses over the past 3 months or so. Digging it all so far.
I didn't think I'd be too into MVP, but then I held of the discs in store and nothing else felt better to me. I really liked how rounded the bottom of the rim is and how shallow and flat they are. I just feel like I can get a really good grip and release. It's gonna take a while to build a new bag and learn these new discs, but really loving them so far.

It's so stable out of the hand I'd expect any single-mold disc to dump left at 300' but this thing just holds straight and fades gently at like 375'-400', and has a nice forward-penetrating fade gaining me bonus distance.

Crave and envy are the best discs I’ve ever thrown. Proxy comes close too. And I threw an insanity today. Loved it. Super domey one, fit great in the hand. Good compliment to the tenacity
shopping for the Volt, I learned that the flight path is very different in Electron, versus the others. Electron is -2, 1.5, whereas the others are -0.5, 2. Cosmic numbers are like for the others, not like Electron in the flight numbers at all, so I feel you could have touched upon that enough at 7:22 as his could lead to some confusion.
MVP/Axiom have the best throwing putters, on the market, hands down . Only use Electron for putting.. You can grip and rip neutron putters all day. Sometimes I feel like I'm cheating, when driving with the Proxy, Atom, or Envy.. and the Entropy. RELIABLE.
I've never touched an mvp disc. I'd reallllly like to. Lol Now I'm very interested in streamline discs. I like the price tag, lol. I just ordered a parachute and a glitch. I've never gotten to throw anything made by mvp, so I'm pretty excited. I've been reading into streamline discs, and I'm highly intrigued. I'd like to try some of their discs. Streamline has moved to the top of my 'next summer discs' list. I can't wait for that parachute it's due Monday.
Let’s provide science driven proof that there are distinct differences between the multitude of disc golf discs. There are MANY different discs on the market, “claiming” to be “different” from other discs, yet…….most discs “seem” to be almost identical in flight, despite the numbers on the discs. For once, it would be nice to see videos describing the differences between the various discs.
My plasma volt is SO stable, lol. I don't mind the soft plastic for backhands, either, so this is such a great plastic. It works for forehands well even when it's moderately hot, so long as you don't leave it laying out in the sun for a while.
Also, the R2 ions are AWESOME! I agree with the claim that it's between neutron and neutron soft. Plenty grippy, but you do need to have an affinity for gripping putters tightly if you want to putt with it. Would not recommend for push putters, it's a bit too soft imho.
A worthy note is that cosmic versions of each plastic is usually a bit more overstable than the normal version, even when it comes to Electron. Good video!
I'm actually planning to do a video on all the plastic blends and their stabilities. For me Soft Neutron is the most stable and I generally find the Glow 2.0 just behind and then Proton.
The "gyro effect" is felt by every disc. This is a point that most descriptions of increased MOI discs don't clarify. Thanks MVP overmold discs increases the gyro effect by ever so little. Your demo with the tops exaggerates the difference. The important bit is that when the MOI is increased, it takes more torque to achieve the same angular velocity which leads to more angular momentum which creates more gyro effect. So, the increased flight stabilization is only realized if the person throwing the disc can add extra torque. However, when the torque is increased for any disc, it's angular momentum (flight stability) will increase as well. I, personally, can achieve only a certain amount of torque. I quickly arrive at a point that the increased MOI doesn't help me and may hinder me because I can't torque it enough. On the other hand. I've noticed that when throwing down hill where I get a boost from gravity the higher MOI discs seem to not flip or turn as much. Same thing happens when throwing into a head wind where the airspeed is increased by the wind. Another point about MVP discs is that every mold I have (only 3) seems to be flatter than other manufacturers. Case in point, look at the profiles between a Relay and a Leopard (not leopard 3). Wave v Surge SS. and Photon v Wraith. Please correct me if I'm wrong but the more domey a disc is the more lift it has. Lift is the torque that causes the disc to "turn" (precess) at high speed.
Pretty much agree with everything you say about MOI. As for domey discs I'd say you're just unlucky. I've got 8 Photons and they range from board flat to really domey. The domey ones have more turn and fly forever.
@@DiscGolfDownUnder Really? I would think every Photon would have the same profile. Doesn't speak to well to MVPs quality control. In your opinion, why are some flat and others domey? "The domey ones have more turn" Exactly. They turn more because they have more lift.
I HAD TWO EARLY DISC FROM LATITUDE , ZION AND GOBI, SAME THING WIHT MOLD ON RIMS, LOVED THEM THEY WERE PERFECT FRO ME UNFOURTUNATELY I HAVE LOST THE M BOTH
I suspect that rotation loss due to air resistance is low, but when contacting objects, it's high. The extra inertia should matter most when it hits an object or the ground. MVP should make some anti-gyro approach discs with low rotational inertia for when you want the disc to stop on the ground or not glide after a tree hit.
Don't know too much about the Excite. 13 speed is my limit and even then I struggle to get them up to speed. I do like the Catalyst. Similar flight rating but speed 13. It hyzer flips nicely for me but do find it a bit touchy. Even the hint of a headwind and it just keeps going right.
I would generally say the move is to start with about an 8 or 9 speed. My innova Valkyrie is my money hyzerflip/standstill disc, both forehand and backhand, but I know my buddy swears by his Inertia (same numbers, but one more glide). You'll be amazed how incredibly far a hyzer flip can go when you're throwing at the proper speed for the disc. I used to have a Daedelus (13 6 -3 2) that was way flippy but the second it finished flipping it dumped left because I didn't have the arm to keep it at a good speed for the duration of its flight. Bear in mind that I'm saying all this of 475-550' throws in field work, I don't have a wuss arm lol. The biggest thing about MVP for me is how straight their discs fly in the middle of the flight. They flip up and ride for days before fading much more gently than single-mold discs rated with less fade.
Have you bought a fission photon recently? I bought 2 or 3 trying to replace one I lost and they are much more overstable. Maybe I just fell in love with a freak understable one.
Haven't bought one for about 12 months now. I do have 7 in total. I have found some of the the max weight ones to be quite stable when new but they do beat in fairly quickly to something more manageable.
I have tried a bunch of different brands. There is really no other brand that has as great of a finish as MVP. Only Kastaplast and MVP have great finishes on their discs while other companies like innova and lattitude can have that little extra plastic strip you have to cut away if you want to be able to have a comfortable forehand.
I would agree that Mvp and Kasta almost never have issues with finish, but I might be able to shed some light on something newer. If you haven't felt the royal line discs from Latitude, they feel fantastic. I guess they implemented a new process for this line of discs to remove the flashing.
@@NaJk93 I haven't tried their new putter, and while I have a Rive, I have no business giving info on a destroyer-esque disc. My arm isn't up to par. I really did enjoy the 11 speed Grace. It felt like a Trace with a tick more glide and a touch less stable. My favorite of the bunch was mid-range Trust. For me it flew in between a Buzzz and Buzzz SS. Dead straight! It's listed as a 5 speed with 2 fade, but I really didn't experience any fade. Hope that helps. Best of luck!
I’ve been curious, wouldn’t any disc with a proton rim basically not have any gyro scopic advantages? I thought the whole thing was that they use a denser plastic on the rim but if they use proton then it’s not more dense and therefore no gyro advantage. Is this true?
Why can't you tell me the exact percentage the MMI is increased by the overmold? This is information the company definitely knows. Maybe it's because it's
I have watched a video on RUclips where somebody cut up a MVP disc and calculated the densities of the flight plate and overmould. It wasn't terribly accurate but they estimated it was May 10-15% increase in MMI. Does it make a difference? I think it's noticeable to me.
@@DiscGolfDownUnder I've never seen a difference myself although admittedly I haven't tried very much. I currently own a Tesla and a few original IONS that I've had since they first came out. I think I will go out and throw them next to a Saint and a Judge. I will say however that I have used a wizard as a driving putter for about 10years with the original Gyro tech and it does work well.

Good video 👍
Excellent video!
I'm privileged to own 2x NM 3rd run MVP IONs. The hard plastic feels amazing and they are dead straight. They have a unique textured bottom.
Good video!
Definitely. Cosmic Neutron Volts are so beefy.
Great job Matt wanted to know your opinion on the glow 2.0 flight compared to standard proton plastic more/less stable?
I'm actually planning to do a video on all the plastic blends and their stabilities. For me Soft Neutron is the most stable and I generally find the Glow 2.0 just behind and then Proton.
I can second that they glow for ever it seems like
The "gyro effect" is felt by every disc. This is a point that most descriptions of increased MOI discs don't clarify.
Thanks
MVP overmold discs increases the gyro effect by ever so little.
Wave v Surge SS. and
Photon v Wraith.
I HAD TWO EARLY DISC FROM LATITUDE , ZION AND GOBI, SAME THING WIHT MOLD ON RIMS, LOVED THEM THEY WERE PERFECT FRO ME
UNFOURTUNATELY I HAVE LOST THE M BOTH
I suspect that rotation loss due to air resistance is low, but when contacting objects, it's high. The extra inertia should matter most when it hits an object or the ground. MVP should make some anti-gyro approach discs with low rotational inertia for when you want the disc to stop on the ground or not glide after a tree hit.
Interesting idea.
I’ve thought about getting an understable axiom excite for a hyzer flip to get more distance. Any advice?
You might need to make an updated video with all the new stuff MVP is producing.
It's hard to keep up these days.
Iso proton envy I really can’t throw the electron or neutron plastic as well
Hi guys which MVP disc would you recommend for forehand? I need one for straight shoot, at least 8 speed and flat realease
Not strictly MVP, but the Streamline Trace is my go-to straight shooter. If you want gyro, then maybe a Wave.
@@DiscGolfDownUnder ok, thanks for the recommendation. I will keep my eyes on those discs.
Volt for straight forehand with a little finish.
The Steamline Trace on the steamline talk is gas, I bag 3 of them and maybe well get #4 soon
How is ecliplse 2.0 stability compared to neutron and others?
Eclipse 2.0 is generally the most overstable plastic, but there are some exceptions in some moulds.
Have you bought a fission photon recently? I bought 2 or 3 trying to replace one I lost and they are much more overstable. Maybe I just fell in love with a freak understable one.
Mine are also wicked stable, I have bought two in the last few months
@@zeta8512 I'll see if I can find one that could fill a hole in my bag. Any suggestions?
I'm sure it's all part of the secret sauce but they add fillers to the plastic to make it denser.
I’ve used to Proxy for awhile. Just got 2 Nomads in the firm Electron plastic. I love the feel but Electron plastic is an absolute dust magnet.
That just means you need to get out more often and throw them to blow the dust off. ;-)
How does eclipse 2.0 fly compared to neutron soft?
Thought space athletic and mint are also molded by MVP
Yep, more great discs out there worth a look at.
Don’t they make Mint Discs out of Austin also ?
When you say less stable, do you mean less overstable?
Less stable = more understable.
My trace is amazing
I found this on my own but it appears i should say that Simon Lizotte sent me
Holy **** rip to headphone users on that pole dink sound
That’s cool you can still play disc golf in The Peoples Republic of Australia.
Came here after Simon Lizotte mentioned you and this video on the most recent Nick and Matt Show ruclips.net/video/sxRoXlEnESI/видео.html
He was right this is a great overview, well done!
