Good old city-fence redwood becomes tiny cottage studio

- When San Francisco artist and builder Jay Nelson sees someone tearing down a redwood fence in his neighborhood he asks if he can take it home with him.
With a stockpile of salvaged, old-growth redwood fencing, he recently built a tiny studio for his friend Lana to use as a home office. It's just under 100 square feet and that means it's small enough so that San Francisco doesn't require a permit.
In this video, Nelson shows us his stockpile of wood, the studio made of nearly all salvaged materials (doors, windows, flooring included), and how it nearly melts into the yard because of its rounded shape. He also gives us a peek at the greenhouse he's building out of some of his recycled redwood just next to the studio.

very cool video on using whats already available.and cheap or free.I think he "gets it" that older is better in some cases?
Back in high school a 2 or 3 years ago my teacher always got old wood to build sheds out of and then we sold them. Though he didn't get the wood for free.
What a lovely little space he's created! It's awesome that the old-growth wood is put to good use, instead of being wasted. Kudos to Jay and other builder/scavengers like him.
I want his sweater sooo much!
I wish u had shown the inside of the office
0:46, I'm telling you "the like" is, like, contagious. That makes me nervous when ever I'm around someone who does that.
I love this guys ideas. and this room is awesome. The windows are gorgeous! I love the wood he uses.
Jay, I for one, enjoyed looking at your projects. Listening to you talk about it, one quickly learns that you are very passionate about reclaimed building materials. Thanks for sharing with us, and disregard all the ass hole comments from others. Peace brother.
I grew up in CA, and I used 'like' way too much, too :) It took many years to get out of the habit, plus public speaking with slap the 'like' right out of you! He's a great guy, so he can like his like as much as he likes. He's handy and creative, I like it!!
You can't get old growth redwood anymore. Termites HATE it. My house in SF was 100% old growth redwood and it was great!
Amazing how some people can look at what I would call junk and make something functional and beautiful.
great video, but gotta stop saying like man, haters gonna hate
It must get very confusing if he doesn't like something.
@krl8814 No kidding. He must not be a native.
@LetTheMelodyFlow When you guys see an amazing beautiful building, do you only notice the cobwebs?
The windows need screening for proper ventilation.
Hello Kirsten, I was wondering where I can find information on San Francisco building regulations for building in my own back yard.
You know... The Thing...
The Sapranos
@notoriousnews Nothing like a disparaging remark coupled with a demand that's sure to get you what you want.
He just needs Silent Bob and he can strike back!
