@@lenwenzel7440 Standardization is the death of creativity. He clearly designed the house for the proportions of his own body. This isn't a cookie-cutter house in the suburbs, it's a custom-built house made for the builder himself. I would trust that he is capable of sizing stairs for his own feet.
Out of all the videos I have watched about homes that are built different this is the most beautiful one I have seen. Every unique aspect of it complements one-another; the simple end table to the unique staircase. The whole house is a piece of art.
This is seriously one of the most inspirational videos I've ever seen! I've been looking through hundreds and hundreds of small homes and this one definitely takes it! Not just in the style and construction, but the philosophy behind every single object in the home. Creating a very livable and breathable space that's also practical, small, and simple with little to nothing but environment around you is such a fantastic way to live! I hope someday I too can create a home as stunning as this one with just my bare hands! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Most geniuses in their chosen realm are super passionate about what they do, they truly care. They are obsessed with visions of perfection, details that only they can see, all that swirling around in their heads. I picture this craftsman waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, stumbling to his work desk, cranking up the coffee machine, and getting to work.
The reason prebuilt homes don't feel right is because it's not natural materials you interact with. There's just something about touching wood with your hands and feet. Like a kid going barefoot in woods or sand. You feel what it is around you.
"I love living with things that have stories... Every time that you interact with something that you didn't purchase from a store you're having a direct communication...and it adds this whole layer of richness to your life that you'd otherwise miss..." This guy is amazing!!!
This house only works out, if it's in the woods. If it was on the side of the highway, then it would have a very different feel to it. It's the forest, that makes it magical.
Of all of the video's I've seen on tiny houses this is the absolute BEST, in terms of space and proportion and the use of natural elements. I really liked the way he kept it simple and stylish at the same time. It's given me a lot of ideas.
Thank you Kirsten! This video in particular makes me want to get OUT of this office and enjoy/live this short life to the fullest! It is really inspirational.
Absolutely gorgeous house! Just looking at the interior makes me feel calm and makes me long for a space like that. I always get the same feeling when I see traditional Japanese houses.
What I love about this home is that of all the small homes I've seen, this feels the most spacious. This home isn't about sloughing off your worldly possessions in order to fit in a smaller space, it is about bringing you closer to the nature around you, but not feeling confined while you are inside. I would actually really love a home like this, though I would have to adjust the floor plan to add a second room for my kid, but I don't think that would be out of place in a build like this.
I've been following Brian's posts on Cape Falcon Kayak for several years. What a talented and creative guy. Thank you for featuring him and this beautiful house that he created. Someday I hope to spend a week at Brian's place building a kayak.

This is a beautiful house! I love all the wood, and the spirit of the house. I like how Brian talks about how/why he built things a certain way, especially the "I built it this way so I can enjoy my life." :).
This is what I love. Someone that is able to work with what they got. It has more soul and more feeling behind. It feels right. When a person builds it themselves, it becomes a part of them. They appreciate the little things. What is so cool is this guy used what was once either thrown away, or discarded as junk, and made something beautiful. You are inspiring and you have inspired me. This something I am going to do. I am going to get my family involved and get them to understand the simple things in life. Thank you....
I have watched COUNTLESS videos on small houses tiny houses off grid houses cob houses straw bale houses yurts trailers etc and hes had the greatest success with making a small space look so fucking big. It doesnt feel like it is lacking for anything except a bathroom.
I love the idea of a raised seating/dining area with lots of coushions instead of a couch. Bean bag fort anyone? The brutal utilitarianism on display with those bookshleves speaks to me as well. The point isn't to make something beautiful that works. Make something that does what it's supposed to as simply as possible and it will be beautiful.
THIS is the kind of tiny home I'd be absolutely in love with. I didn't see a real bathroom, but shy of that, this is beautiful - true craftsmanship. A little larger, some extra storage space, and a bathroom, and I think I'd be sold on that.
This is my favourite small house that I have seen on youtube., I love the sense of space and light, and you can,t go wrong with a Japanese influence either! He was inspirational to listen to, and peaceful, like his beautiful house. THankyou for sharing, Brian. Good wishes from New Zealand.
I think this is one of the nicest places that you've brought to us yet Kirsten! He's done an amazing job making this tiny place appear to have a lot of room and is hand crafted beautifully! Like some other commenters...I'd like a few more amenities, but that would be my house, no his! Wonderful work by you and the owner!

I'm not crazy about the stair banister and handrails, just sticks, not even timbers, but wow, everything else looks perfect. Well put together, professional craftsmanship with a lot of style, thought and planning. and the $11K price tag, seems do-able, not like others who claim like $500 or some crazy lie. Totally amazing creation worth commenting and complimenting on. Totally impressed by the finish product here, Job well done!!!!!!!
I love it. I live in central north america on the shores of Lake Superior. in Canada. As a visual artist this type of retreat or rural residence holds a huge appeal to me. The woods I would have to use to build something akin to this would be a bit different from Pacific coastal forest woods but not all that much so would make some adaptations. Thanks for posting this video. Kudos to you Brian and thanks Kirsten for capturing this.

The "Japanese" inspired house. When I saw the kayak and he said he made his living from that, that's when I "liked" this video. I love that house and the simplicity and practicality of it. I can see me building something like that.
This brings to mind a book by Tom Bender called " Building with the Breath of Life". I really like how Brian works with the prana or chi of the space. This is one of my personal favorites that Kirsten has captured on film. Thanks for all the great work of documenting all these exceptional places.
I did not know that, very funny. I just kept picking up on that through the whole vid. I guess that's why I get certain labels put on me. Which community? I practice something I call Shamanic Carpentry.
You will more than likely be in a video soon too. Must be a very nice view or maybe enchanting.. The small space living intrigues me. Prior to my current space which is 2,000 sq'+ . I was living in 800 sq' with 3 cats and a bunch outside. It seems Oregon has a lot of in touch people.
What a beautiful place. I especially loved how he built the stairs. He seems like a very mindful person taking many things into consideration before creating it. I just love this house!!!
This is one of the most beautiful houses I've seen in a long time. There are many log home, giant log cabin shows on TV and they are just obnoxious and large. This is perfect.
Wow! Brian, you have a gift to see life & beauty where others don't. Your home is beautiful, it is alive and I can see that all it wants to do is draw away any negative feelings a person may have and fill them with warmth and happiness. Health, Long Life & Happiness To You...
Very minimalist.. very zen and I especially love the natural materials having been constructed himself. It reminds me of how imprisoned I am with all the STUFF I've acquired, much of it I think I need but most likely don't. I'd like to see someone achieve and maintain that with kids, ha. Inspiring nonetheless :)
I love this...when can I move in? I like Brian's mindset about this kind of living. Especially about going back to the 2000 sq ft and it not feeling 'right'. Definitely can identify with that! I'd rather live with animals and nature any day. Plus, not needing a lot of STUFF.
This one's the best one. A guy with vision, skill, and soul... what I notice about this house compared to other videos is that the craftsmanship on all the wood is phenomenal (apart from his fast-built furnishings, which he explains). Look at the planed pieces of spruce and fir that make up the structure. A custom home builder in the PNW would have charged 300k to build something like this. Amazing.
Beautiful Home...Beautiful Philosophy... and right here in Oregon where I built my Tiny Japanese Teahouse which I Love and have lived in for 11years... it’s nice to know there is a kindred soul out here in the Oregon Forest 😊
This videos touch my interior child and burn my heart. im from Spain. Thanks for sharing your time and travels. forever subscribe. We want your book translated for spanish people. Europe and Sudamerica.
I love what Brian created. Great job. I have only one question: where is the fridge. Being someone who enjoys cooking, one needs to have someplace to keep the food.
There were no fridges in the early 1800's, 1700's, etc. so I take it that he uses what grows in the garden and/or mostly dry ingredients? Also many root vegetables stay good for a very long time unrefridgerated. At least that's what I think he does, given that he's a vegeterian/vegan. I wonder how big of a wheat field it takes to have enough for a reasonably sized loaf of bread.
Enjoy pure Nature + keep its roots = the better !! Zen + imagination & creative Art + simplicity = harmony :) The truest and most beautiful things are always the simplest !!!! Sincerely, nice Zen forest house... interesting video & great sharing... Thank you very much:)
beautiful house. it feels awfully big and it has a cool zen but i dont think he lives there. where would the food go? where would his clothes go? and were is the bathroom. like at least a compost toilet and an outdoor shower but i didnt see anything. do you know something about this Kristen? is it like a place to relax instead of a place to live for him?
He did live in this with his fiance, but has recently moved out (I will post a video of what he is living in now... a converted shed on the same property-- he helps run an organic farm.. also have a video coming of this). I didn't film the toilet, but you can see photos of it on the link @ bottom or text (and other photos he's taken of the place).
Thanks a lot for the info Kristen. Quick reply too. I got a scholarship for berklee in boston. Its still a lot of money i would have to get to get by the whole 3 years as i got the general courses approved. If i accept it i would start on september 2014 and this little houses are definetley a possibility. Thanks for all. Best Regards. Cheers from Puerto Rico
Great video. This guy is my idle. I like his simplistic philosophy. I liked when he talked about the lag bolt instead of notching the rail. When I built my tiny house in my yard I used his same philosophy, basically because I am not a carpenter or master craftsman but know simplicity can save you hours of time and you can achieve the same results. Can't wait to see part 2.
How do you keep the Department of Making People Sad from condemning it and kicking you out because it doesn't meet all the arbitrary 'international' building codes?
I want to know this too. I like the place but so many code violations... How can you get away with it? Is there another home on the property that meets health, environment and safety codes and this is an outbuilding?

You will more than likely be in a video soon too. Must be a very nice view or maybe enchanting.. The small space living intrigues me. Prior to my current space which is 2,000 sq'+ . I was living in 800 sq' with 3 cats and a bunch outside. It seems Oregon has a lot of in touch people.
What a beautiful place. I especially loved how he built the stairs. He seems like a very mindful person taking many things into consideration before creating it. I just love this house!!!
Wonderful design and love the brass sink ...!
Just drank my morning coffee watching this,
it filled me right up with some good vibes.
Thanks!
one of the best thus far!!!so live this space
Sweet little place. Would love to be there in winter time. Snow falling, Fire going, adult beverage and someone to keep you warm! Really cool sir..
very well built unique small home. I would live in a place like this anytime
This is one of the most beautiful houses I've seen in a long time. There are many log home, giant log cabin shows on TV and they are just obnoxious and large. This is perfect.
absolutely stunning. I hope I can have a place just like this someday. You are a true artist, and a master craftsman sir. Well done, very well done.
Give me all your stuff please. I want to make you free.
Wow.... you must be breathing so much fresher and healthier than most of us .
Great piece of creative work .
Amazing.
nice work, I would love to build something like this for my Mom , deep in the woods
Thanks,
David
that doesn't sound very nice dude lololol
I see it Doesn't , But I think see would love it
I Loved the Video

I would love it if my son built me a cabin in the woods someday! LOL
Kirsten, you do great work! Thanks for finding these beautiful places and people and telling their stories. Keep them coming!
And I can't even carve a Pumpkin right
lolol
Blake Estell -Hahaha! Me either!
:D
Beautiful Home...Beautiful Philosophy... and right here in Oregon where I built my Tiny Japanese Teahouse which I Love and have lived in for 11years... it’s nice to know there is a kindred soul out here in the Oregon Forest 😊
This is absolutely beautiful. I love everything about this space. WOW! Thanks for sharing :o)
My dream house! Thank you so much for sharing it. I can feel the love and peace you have with the building and the living of it.
This videos touch my interior child and burn my heart. im from Spain. Thanks for sharing your time and travels. forever subscribe. We want your book translated for spanish people. Europe and Sudamerica.
you are amazing, brian. you've created a thing of beauty that breathes, in which you abide. wow.
Wonderful! Love it.
Quite simply the most beautiful home I've ever seen. Thank you for sharing.
He walks like he talks....
Really fantastic job-well done!
Thank you for posting .
I love it! I could happily live there!
I can hear the "love & passion" in his voice. The staircase is extraordinary! Keep your dreams going, sir. Wow.
Beautiful! Love it. Was there a bathroom?
The bathroom is a separate unit outside, I believe they call it a toilet.
Enjoy pure Nature + keep its roots = the better !!
Zen + imagination & creative Art + simplicity = harmony :)
The truest and most beautiful things are always the simplest !!!!
Want to see more!
@matt Harvey Right. They're outside your box of a house. Waiting for you.
Love this home. Bravo!!! Wonderful job!!! Lots of space. What a peaceful place.
