- J. Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D minor, op. 47. (arranged for flute by D. Bouriakov)
I. Allegro moderato
Kangnam Symphony Orchestra, HyunSuk Suh (conductor), Denis Bouriakov (flute).

This man completely exhibits how powerful the flute can be. This instrument isn't and has never been just a little fluff pretty thing to listen to. The flute can exude POWER as well as lilting beauty.
I so want to get another flute and start playing again. Long tones, scales, etudes, excerpts, pieces. Then at my age I hear this brilliant man and think to myself, "why even bother?" At my age I should be happily accomplished. I just want to fill my soul again with music. 😢
I'm Brazilian, applying for classical music!! You definitely have another fan!!!!! Congratulations!!!!!!
I absolutely LOVE how his sound just sings out. It's so vibrato and alive. In all registers. Those octave leaps are incredible. Not easy. Especially in rapid passages.
This man is absolutely AMAZING. I love his tone and how he makes every note speak. Especially with wide intervals. Not the easiest thing to do. His power and intensity are everything. He truly captures everything this work needs for a phenomenal performance. That cadenza, DAMN!! BRILLIANT!!!
Those 4th octave notes incredible and in tune as well. This man has definitely taken the flute to new heights of performance.
Omg this is perfection. I love Denis Bouriakov so much!!!!
Francis it seems to me the answer is that no flute was played to this ability before. In this case we have the best instrument modern flute played with skill unmatched by past players, synergistically making possible this new standard of what can be done with a flute.
so beautiful and perfect, I hope someday to hear live
Have you heard him live yet? If so was it everything you'd hoped it would be?
Magnificent. One of my favorite pieces of music. Maxim Vengerov gives a super human performance of this with the Chicago Symphony here on YT. I thought the bassoon player would fall forward. I think he listened to that performance. Tempos and style are very similar to MV’s.
absolutely one of the best flute classical players !!
Truly marvellous. But then - your playing always is. (Still remember hearing the Bach Chaconne live a few years ago now. What magic!)
The high C at 14:18!
those violinists are 'mirin HARD
Bravo!
YES I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!
I was listening to Barber's Violin Concerto just before this and wondering why couldn't he have written a flute concerto or two. Listening to this, I wonder why more composers didn't bother to. Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Brahms, Rachmaninov would have enriched the flute repertoire so much with their sound; granted the instrument has limitations but this performance here proves that it is capable of so much. Sadly this will remain a feature piece, won't get a place in concert seasons. I blame Mozart!
I know this is 4 years late but the main reason is because the flute at the time could not handle such demanding repertoire. It was only after the Boehm model that the flute began to shape into what it is today.
Very little timbral range, very limited volume in the middle and low registers - the two main reasons.
Denis, you're the best!
what a beautiful sound he has.
FANTASTICO VIRTUOSO Y NO TAN MEDIATICO COMO OTROS .
The torch has been passed. Bravo!
i would not necessarily say, that this is the right direction....
I would rather pass down the Pahud's mindset to the next generations....
@@alhdgysz I agree. Even though this performance is insane technically, it lacked In musicality which should be passed down.
@@dominicktravis6119 it's not just about musicality. It's about tone production too.
@@alhdgysz not every musician should strive to have the same tone as another. The most successful soloists are 100% unique from one another. Emmanuel Pahud is more soft while Denis is harsh. I personally am more harsh with the intense parts of the music and soft with the light parts of the music.
@@dominicktravis6119 you are right, we shouldn't play exactly the same way. However if we pass on the Pahud tone production, we will have wider colour palette, and wider dynamic range. It is still the artist's job to interpret the music and make artistic choices.
I do prefer Bouriakov's arrangement for the flute than the original for violin, it's more powerful. Denis Bouriakov is really pushing the limits of flute playing!
I have my phone up to my ear, and his first note sent chills thru my entire body. 🥹 Then the rest of this performance... it speaks for itself. OMG! I am literally fighting back tears. I'm in public. Lol.
You are My Favorite Flutist~!!
fantastic bravissimo Denis
Fantastic!!!
oh la la magnifique! trop beau
Vertigineux! Quelle technique!
Amazing, mind-blowing.
amazing...
Hermosa versión , gran sonido , gran musicalidad , bravo Maestro!
Other-worldly. And those orchestra-flutes at 6:16!
2:47 I am not a flautist but this part sound impressive
It's ungodly difficult
As a flute player, you are correct it is impressive.
The notes aren’t difficult but technically it’s hard to got form the lower octaves to the higher octaves so fast and that part is about half a page which is very tiring
Magnifico Denis Magnifico!!
Amazing
The violinists at 2:56 look angry
They look like they hate their job
@@keadeharakazuha3521 🤣🤣🤣🤣
OMFG THIS... THIS...
Maestro
Great!! :)
Marvelous! Please, where's the second movement? Bravissimo!🌻🎉
Damn this is epic
Marvellous flute playing but as a flute player what is up with the embouchure? Like I love the video but it's an interesting way that I've never seen before - however if that's what works then that's great, he's a lot better than people with "correct" embouchures
wonderful ! good contrl embouchure
Why 31 people dislike this piece ???
Bravoooooo,super
It always looks to my like he plays with the flute offset to the left. Am I seeing that right? I have a big tear drop lip and have started playing offset as well and am hopeful that it is possible to create this fantastic a tone from that.
It's because his natural embouchure is very off center, my flute teacher played with him before and says you can see that his smile is not symmetrical. it's not wise to imitate unless you have the same natural offset as him
I think he is very like the songs composer composed for violin
Its just that there isnt much great repertoire for flute compared to violin and piano where they have the likes of Liszt, chopin, paganini etc.
Asombroso.
Espetacular!
Excellent, only one note was seriously flat, a long top note in the first movt. If the embouchure is relaxed and you can't hear the tightness in the sound anything is ok.
Where are the other movements?
2:47
I pushed yourself hardly to listen to the end. Must say - it is not Sibelius...
Great flutist but this instrument can't replace dark and deep tone of violin.
As a flutist, i agree with you about the lack of the violin . Anyway is really difficult to find a flutist like Bouriakov, just an incredible arrangement
Yes, and I think the same about khachaturian
I don't believe I've ever heard him play a piano (dynamic) through out the entire piece.
In your opinion... exactly what do you think dynamics are..? (And by that, also the definition of the dynamic "piano")? I think he plays piano (dynamic) plenty of times...
Issac Stern. To name a few, the focus/speed of air, compliment of vibrato, shading of sound and lastly, volume of sound. You and I apparently hear how he phrased the rise and fall very differently. Dynamics to me, means how aforementioned come together to form overlapping color of sounds in the context of organized sound/music.
@@dasteufelhund he played piano plenty of times bro!! pay attention to all the amazing stuff he did it's in there
Dynamics are relative
Jesus
I am interested to know what William Bennet has to say about your embouchure.
It is just so strange.
Reminds me a little of Rampal's embouchure. Look at Galway's embouchure over the years, it is migrating to the side.
IDPAGirl I think Alain Marion played like that as well.
William Bennett was his teacher :)
This is fantastic! It just lacks the energy that a violinist would bring.
An AMEB examiner would grade him a C with the relaxed way he holds the flute
the most retarded comment ive ever read
he sound has like Galway .
My gosh poor Sibelius..
As much as I worship Denis, this isn't gripping/biting/satanic-tri-toney enough for me. Pay me money and I play my rendition on my flute for you
