In that one second the NZ player has moved forward about a foot, the Aus player has jumped up with his right knee raised. If anything the yellow card should have been against the Aus player for leading with his knee into high and potentially dangerous contact

Darcy Swain did that on Quinn Tupaea and it cost Tupaea surgery, a year of rehab, probably some mental depression and a certain spot in the world cup squad. The air collision one though is probably fair game, it's not like the kiwi defender leapt into the aussie guy, he stood his ground.

It seems more about who can stay on the right side of the referee's whistle rather than actually playing rugby. So many silly rules that seem unnecessary, like detaching before attempting a pilfer or setting the ball down and picking it back up to negate any double movement 😐 I like unions gameplay but Leagues ruleset is so much cleaner.

If he was standing sill and the Aus player jumped into him, it would 100% be on the Aus player. If the NZ player caught the ball first, once again it would be the Aus player's own fault. The penalty in this situation very much relies on who wins the contest for the ball. The Aus player won the contest, the NZ player will be held responsible for any contact, unless it is a fair contest in the air, but then both players must be in the air challenging fairly for the ball.
