Butter on a Budget: Gateron Yellow Review

- Gateron yellows are deeeeeecent linears with a lit spring - when you mod them, they're very very good linears with a lit spring - when you buy them, you wallet doesn't hate you as much (did I mention their spring is literal flames)

Lubed gat yellows are a godsend really. Amazing switch on a budget, buttery smooth after some lubing
Filmed them and BAM
Haven't build the full keeb yet but tried out lubing 1 or 2 switches and I have to say, it's so hard to actually feel any smoothness difference, but a little sound. Either I expected too much or I need to try out a full lubed keeb
Or I lubed wrong
@@nootics You probably lubed wrong. A thin film of Krytox 205 or Tribosys is peak lubrication. You could be using a stem made out of 50 grit sandpaper(Cherry brown) and the PTFE/PFPE blend would make it borderline usable.
glarses said that milky red clear tops are less smooth than gat yellows. do you think regular gat reds are less smooth than regular gat yellows?
@@dodobird809 I never tried gat reds, but stock gat blacks were, imo, more scratchy than gat yellows and required more lube to smoothen up

well, boys. I'm glad that we are here to witness one of the best keyboard channel grow. (type on gateron yellow btw)
Gatreron yellows r the best linear switch for the price I have them and use them everyday luv them. Completely agree with everything u said except the sound which I enjoy because I have a plastic base keyboard which gives it a thockyish sound. I also lubed them with 205 and I am super satisfied with them luv the vids keep it up

Glarses my good man. Thank you very much for all the videos you've put out. You've motivated me to make the step, and so I've modded my keyboard (Logitech Pro X). Now I've got new switches Gateron Yellows which I've lubed myself and made the band aid mod. Nothing special but the work really paid out. Loving it so far.

I made the switch to a 60% like 2 months ago and initially wanted the gat yellows but i wasnt really there yet. I dont have any tools for soldering yet and never done it either so i decided not to go all in on my first 60% trying something for the first time. The hotswap boards that were available and in my pricerange at this either didnt have features i wanted or i just did not like the looks of it. So i got myself an anne pro 2 wich i love, really wanted that multilayer and tap function and for the price it was pretty much the perfect package for me for what i was looking for (also a friend has an anne pro 2 aswell so its allways nice to have actual reviews from people you know) So right now its gateron browns for me, heard alot of great things about them but i mainly wanted to try them because i had cherry reds for like the last 10 years and i did not even know how tactile switches feel. They are weird sometimes, but they are not BAD by any means, they are 100% useable, alltho i probably still prefer linears, mostly due to consistency. It feels like if you press the gat browns on the top end compared to center or bottom, they are differently tactile wich can result in a weird uneven feeling sometimes but thats more of a preference oppinion and less of an ''i hate them'' rant. Because i dont. The Keyboard feels great to use overall, better than probably anything ive ever bought in offline stores around the city. And now i can look forward because i now have this old cherry red keyboard laying around i can practice soldering on without destroying anything on my new board so that at one point i can get some nice smooth linears for my anne pro once i know how to solder things.
Cool story bro
I’m already subscribed but searching Katherine Ho’s cover of “Yellow” is what brought me back here :P Just when I thought I was out they pull me back in!

I... I made a brown switch non scratchy on accident... I have a brown switch keyboard I liked the bump so I got them and I accidentally spilt juice on it and now.... No scratchiness AT ALL but it takes a bit longer to come up bit come-on there isn't any scratchiness at all now MWHAHAHA
They sound like ceramic crucibles when bumped to each other
I assume the sound of hollow plastic comes from the keycaps and the case it's in, on a high end case and dampening, of course you'd get better acoustics!
for sure! but I thin that given the price point, an entry level board is a better demonstration for the majority of people who might be interested in gat yellows.
Teus vídeos são muito bons cara! Acho que já assisti todos HAHAHA
obrigado!
I know this is gonna get lost in the comments, especially since this video is a year old, but I can't find where to get Gateron Yellows at a good price. I am pretty new to the keyboard community and not sure where to check. If anyone sees this and knows, please let me know where I can order them for the actual good price.

Paul Braun he funny I guess
yesterday I swear you had 4.1k
To noticeably improve the black bottom/clear top Gat yellows put Cherry tops on them to get rid of the high pitch upstroke sound and it’ll improve stem wobble as well. I’ve had lubed “Chellows” on my board for almost 2 years and have never once thought about needing to upgrade to more expensive linears even after attending 3 meetups. This assumes you either have Cherry switches lying around to harvest or can get cheap housings on mechmarket.
ooh, thanks for the tip, will add chellows to my list of things to try. Have some blacks that I don't have any use so maybe I will experiment with them
I was like oh no when I heard they sound bad but fro they sound uwu
Just built my first custom today. Spent a few hours last night lubing some Gateron Yellows. So worth it. They feel and sound amazing. This video is what made me consider them, so I just wanted to say thanks. Loving them so far.
Lmaoooo sounds like mr crabs walking
2:14 the problem isn't the incompetent sources, the problem is the switches: gateron has probably the worst quality control on the market, every switch is different from the other, the tollerances are very loose and could be varations > 10% in bottom out force, which is unacceptable. they are super cheap, what did you expect? top quality?
I'm getting myself some gateron clears. That 35g spring weight sounds like I'd be typing on a cloud
Update: I got gateron clears. I kinda wish I didn't. They're so sensitive that just resting my fingers on the keys actuates them. And if I even slightly brush against another key, I trigger it. It's like I'm trying not to drop a bar of soap when I'm using those switches
"BRUHHHHHH"
2:02 just to clarify lubed gat yellows are right under stock gat inks or lubed gat inks.
true. Gateron yellow is good. Recommended it to my friend when he said, "Hey! you like keyboards, right? Can you get me a white keyboard with good linears?" But he was looking for full size as well and wanted a prebuild but since I don't care about full size and I wanted him to get gateron yellow and those aren't found in any prebuilds and I don't know of any hot swap boards that are full size besides the GMMK so I just told him to get that and gateron yellows. BTW, I literally bought gateron yellows myself to spring swap into my keyboard when I did my build and I really do just love the springs that are used. IDK if there was something better than the gmmk to recommend to him, if so, you can yell at me, but he definitely loved the gateron yellows and now he is one step into the keyboard community.
Also, not sure if you could fix the noise floor that I seem to find present in your videos right now or if you will even read this, but that might be something worth looking into to see if you could reduce the static.
gmmk is a great entry board! especially with gat yellows. I'm definitely trying to figure out how I can get my audio in check, there is an annoying fuzz I can't seem to get out but I will do some research on noise floors and see if I can get something figured out. Thanks for the advice!
@@Glarses Thanks for actually verifying that the gmmk is actually not terrible. Also just remember to have fun. I like your videos of the comedy keyboard.
Can you put gateron yellows on the g pro x?
@@robin4977
TLDR, yes they could, but if you decide to, there are some other things noted down below that you should know.
I'm pretty sure the g pro x uses either kailh or gateron hot swap sockets (practically the same thing) so It should work. Gateron yellow switches are cheap in the first place. If you do use them, you need to consider that the g pro x uses a plate mount switch design and smd (surface mount) leds so you'll want to get switches with a clear bottom housing (advertised as rgb or optical switches) and plate mount switches (often called 3-pin switches). If you can't find a clear bottom housing switch that is also plate mount, you could get the pcb mount switches (called 5-pin switches) and you'll have to take nail clippers, flush cutters, or some other type of small clipper and cut off the two plastic pins on the bottom of the switch (make sure not to clip the metal contact pins or the large middle circle).
"Cherry MX browns are linear"
Can we get a kailh box whites review?,really interesting switch,I know that you already did a box jade which is basically box whites on cocaine but if you think it would be repetitive, mabe a romer g review?,it's one of those switches where you go *w h y* and *h o w* did this happen

if I can manage to get my hands on some, for sure?
gaychron yellows?
Hi
tl;dw
smoothness: way better than mx sand but still worse than nk cream or black ink
sound: mx blue
price: good
I just removed the clickbars on my Kailh Box whites and I'm not liking the heavy bottom out. Is this also happening to actual linear switches? I'm new to mechanical keyboards so I have no comparison to other switches but I would say the switches are extremely smooth, but my only problem is it's to heavy for me
the bottom out feel is dependent on the spring but also the plate material (affects how hard/bouncy it feels) - but a linear made to be a linear might be different
@@Glarses thanks, when I have enough money again, I would buy a set of switches for my keyboard since it's hotswappable
