Don't be fooled - there is plenty I don't know about a whole range of subjects, lol Likewise, man - I work from home so don't get much proper human interaction so forgive me if I rambled a bit, I spend most of my time talking to cats.
Every day seems to go past faster than the last so I'm determined never to waste a minute. I think it was Bruce Lee who said 'Never waste time as that is what life is made of'.
Thank you for sharing this. I love your garden and pond, it reminds me of summer as a child back home (North of Norway). And thank you for showing us the last bit too, it warms my heart to see you care for the stray cat. Love, from Norway
Although I spent much of my life fishing and shooting I never like to see any animal suffer of be a victim of neglect or abuse so I even let flies out of the house alive, lol
I'm really pleased with how the water hawthorn is growing and if it seeds well next year there will be a vanilla smell in the garden. I've also ordered 10,000 Henbane seeds so hopefully I can get some of them growing as they're an awesome looking (but deadly) plant.
(my other channel) I try to work with Nature and what I've done since making this video will probably interest you. My Thousand Yard Stare channel has all the gardening videos on.
Your Beautiful plants are coming along quite nicely Richard. Didn't know that skunk cabbage could grow that big because I usually seem those plants in wet woodland. You must be giving it Miracle-gro..hahaha. They say our sense of smell can trigger all kinds of memories and transport us to other places. After watching this video I'd like to be transported to your Beautiful Pond and Garden Oasis. Well done video Richard
You have a beautiful place there. thanks for sharing I could spend all day relaxing in a place like that, some of your plants grow wild here, nice selection of plants you have
Yes I planted the pond up when it first went in with all sorts of plants - thousands of them that I had grown in a polytunnel for a year previous to the pond work being done.
In the US a tipped ear cat means it's been neutered. They call it TNR programs, where you trap feral cats, neuter them and release them. One ear is tipped so you know which cats have been already neutered. It also lets animal control know to leave those cats alone. Maybe they do that in Ireland too. Beautiful pond. Thanks for sharing it.
Nit sure why the ear would be partially missing in England but we do have loads of foxes and badgers here. Could even be Bob's previous owners doing as he is mighty wary of people.
Thanks for sharing. I wish there was smelly-vision :) Reminds me of chasing little frogs and slipping on the mossy edge and falling into the eel pond at the old botanical gardens here in Brisbane in the 60's. I can still remember the smell and the feel of the eels around me. They seemed huge but probably weren't really ... just me being small (3 or 4).
Hello Richard, The green leader growing out the top of the burgundy copper beech canopy is like the growth suckering from the base of the contorted hazel, plant varieties originally selected for their physical characteristics, propogated vegetatively via cuttings - original dominant genetics from the parent plant remains, sometimes reappearing as the new growth - this also causes variation in the seedlings produced growing as original and lacking desired colour or form. Pruning the canopy leader or not to prune?!? The Pieres is very impressive.
Yes it definitely seems to have partially reverted back to the original lineage there and I like the strangeness of it so it won't be getting pruned out. It only went green about 7-8 years ago, lol
You're going to have a really good display, I love those acers. I think a few more of those shuttlecock ferns should be planted around the pond, they look great. Really looking forward to your next update... keep up the good work.
Its all down hill from here as the plants will all get way too big and out of control over the Summer, lol It'll be like a damned forest in August and September.
I have so many reviews to do on the outdoor gear I have bought over the last year or so I could probably put a video out every day for a couple of months before I get started on the garden maintenance tools, lol
They are good sized gudgeon, used to catch loads of them on the canals and ponds, but seem to be in decline. Are you still having issues with the otters ?, wonder if the cats are wary of them
Yes the otters have been hammering the crayfish lately. They seem to get fixated on one species for a while. I'd imagine that the cats will give the otters a wide pass.
Hi pond guru I know it's not related to this video but you think up some absolutley amazing filter ideas, I'm starting an axolotl tank and want to make a really effective low power filter that will keep the tank clean, won't suck up sand and will also not be too powerful and stress the fish out, I'm buying the fish with a 2.5 foot tank on Saturday so there's a challenge for tomorrow 😜
Not sure if you have seen the 'Groovy' filter I did a while back as that would be absolutely perfect for that situation given that axolotls have exposed gills. Setting the air intake to a minimum would create a nation of dissolved oxygen. ruclips.net/video/hscEToo7p_k/видео.html
Richard, I have done a big mistake, but I was wondering if I could fix it? I just need someone to help me work it out. I bought a 16,000 liter pond pump for my sump set up for my rack. There are only 4 tanks on the rack and they aren't very big tanks 2 x 95cmx35cmx35cm and 2 x 65cmx35cmx35cm. I think I bought my pump too powerful. Is it possible to put a return that splits the water volume in two and takes half of the volume and simply return it to the sump again. So 50 percent will go straight back to the sump to be refiltered and the other will be lifted up and split into 4 to the tanks. I will have ball valves on both the sump return and each tank for even more adjustment, but my problem is the drainage out. If I'm using 2.5cm pvc into the tank, could I use two of the same size bulkheads and pipes to take enough water out of the tank and they will be screened with stainless steel mesh to prevent me sending my shrimp to the sump.
Usually the return to the sump from tanks would have a much larger outlet of around 32mm - 38mm to cope with the flow - the returns used by Dramatic Aquatics in this video sound like they would be perfect as they have a stainless steel mesh on them: ruclips.net/video/zhr27OFdztM/видео.html With regard to the flow rate of the pump it would be much better to go for a suitable sized pump of maybe 4000,6000 or 8000 lph (depending on lift) as it will cost much less to run than the 16000 (thinking long term running costs). You can split the flow of the pump outlet with something like this: geni.us/0f10 which will allow you to get the flow set between tanks and excess vented to sump but there will be so much wasted water recirculating in the sump I would definitely go for a smaller main pump and run the system efficiently.
I use this: geni.us/2gJq in a spreader which does an awesome job of keeping it green and weed free. I'll do a video on the lawn in a couple of weeks as I have just put a treatment on - just before it rained so it was perfect timing.
The story of my life is hard work (most of it futile, lol) but when I can live and work in such a great environment surrounded by wildlife it makes it all worthwhile.
It is approx. 14 years old and it does have a cheap layered PVC liner but we battered about 12" of clay over it to seal it then tapped several springs from the field behind my house and ran them into the pond to keep it topped up.
There were all sorts of coarse fish before the otter started pounding them and now I think there may only be rudd, roach, tench, gudgeon and a few orfe judging by what I have caught in the traps recently.

I originally had a plan to stock about 100 cross-bred mirror and french common carp in there, grow them to around 20lb then sell them to fishing clubs but that plan went west when otters nailed them all when they were between 5lb and 8lb. People used to come and put goldfish and koi carp in there too and it became something akin to a Japanes mud pond - great for fish growth but no good for looking at them.
That sucks that people would trespass and dump their goldfish in there, you need a couple big mean dogs to keep trespassers away :) So funny you guys say "went West" when things go wrong and we say "things went South" Maybe some Largemouth bass would clear out your goldfish problem
Years ago I had an open invitation out on an old website for people to put in pond and aquarium fish if they didn't want them so I often used to notice fish I'd never seen before coming up to feed, lol I think Bass would probably live well in there but they aren't native to the UK and aren't bred for fisheries or food here.
I recently visited Monet's Garden in France. The pond area of your garden reminded me of the lake there. I'm curious about the fish. Did they arrive by themselves?
Some did, some didn't and most have bred in there at some point - currently it is full of rudd although the local heron is doing its best to catch them.
I'll do that as I really neglect the plants in my garden. Even the Acers are planted in heavy clay but strangely everything (except the odd Rhodi) seems to grow very well round here. I'm hoping to get some really outlandish plants growing in the garden.
+pondguru, I've just read that copper beech can have 30%-40% genes of usual beech. when under environmental stress, such as drought,or, wetness, they can revert back to green
That probably explains it as there was a nation of iron girders and contaminated waste pushed along there years ago when the nearby sawmill burned down.
If I make the cave deep enough you're welcome to live in it if you ever feel like descending into madness but you will probably have to fight my uncle who would no doubt set up residence there like some sort of crazed hermit.
I have done a few times with the kids but after the first dozen or so fish it becomes boring as there is no challenge - I'm not a fan of coarse fishing
We don't have bass in the UK but the European Perch would be the nearest thing. The only native catfish we have in UK is the European Wels but they grow bug enough to eat people so I won't be putting any of those in, lol
Another great video I love you're garden and the pond is looking amazing, I look forward to more updates on the pond. Keep up the good work. I would like some advice on my koi pond from you, at the moment all is crystal clear and all my koi seem to be happy and would be eternally grateful if you could give me some tips. I will send you a video in the next few days and I look forward to you're reply.
Sure no problem just send it to pondguru@btinternet.com as personal messages on youtube often get marked as spam and I don't see them for ages if they have video links in.
Oh and have you ever seen or heard of a person digging out a section and reinforcing it with plexiglass so you could kind of have a viewing port into your pond?
I haven't sen anyone doing that with a natural clay pond - not sure it could be sealed properly on that type of pond but I have a video in the pond playlist of a previous project made with blocks and bricks which has a viewing window.
I always find it interesting how you have different names for the same plants than we do here in the states. What you seem to be calling Acer we call Japanese maples.
just subscribed to your channel, loving all the vids. your place looks like a dream place to me, so much right on ya doorstep! anyway keep up the good work! atb steve. ps, is that a north east accent?
It is similar. Water hawthorn is Aponogeton distachyos and Broad leaved pond weed is Potamageton natans so they are similar in their habit and form but the water hawthorn flowers are way nicer than the broad leaved pondweed flowers which are inconspicuous brown poker shaped growths.
We used cheap plastic under approx. 30cm of clay so in effect it is clay lined as the plastic liner was pegged down in strips so wouldn't have been water tight by itself.
the cool thing about having a big garden is that your always discovering something new that you didn't know was there before.
That sure is true - if I had £1 for every bird which passed through here I wouldn't need to work.

lol, it's certainly a good place to live and work. I reckon I'd go postal if I was forced to work in a cubicle with the other mice.
That place must a sanctuary for you....very nice.
Pond looks awesome mate and that Perch was a whopper! Really like what you've done with the hazel tree
It really is an impressive specimen of a contorted hazel but every year the damn squirrels eat the nuts.

No worries - glad you enjoyed the video.
Stunning ! I could watch your vids for hours .. but ive got a water change to do ! 👍🏻
That is beautiful. I could spend all day relaxing in a place like that! Granted, I'd be sneezing a storm afterward, but it'd be worth it.

that's a better looking filter than the black one. but the black filter is mint to. your garden and pond is Amazing lovely job you have done.
Yes the bakki shower is a beast and I'll be getting it running in an upcoming video to show how it works.
7-8 years ago lol, at least it didn't go brown or dead all this time.
looking very nice now mate
what's the biggest fish you have in there and what spices do you have in there
Cheers
Pretty much all the coarse species but very few carp due to them being pounded by otters. Biggest fish will probably be a trout of around 2kg - 3kg.
You have a beautiful place there. thanks for sharing :)
No worries, it takes some work to keep right (and most of it goes wild by the end of the year).
You're going to have a really good display, I love those acers. I think a few more of those shuttlecock ferns should be planted around the pond, they look great. Really looking forward to your next update... keep up the good work.
Yes more of the ferns would be great and there are a few other types of ferns which could go around that shaded side too.
Good video. Nice fish and nice pond.
very interesting looks great and respect for taking so much work on ay
Yes I have well and truly made a rod for my own back but it is worth it to live and work in that environment.
another great update
No worries, glad you enjoy the video and thanks for watching.
Place is looking good Richard..
Its all down hill from here as the plants will all get way too big and out of control over the Summer, lol
It'll be like a damned forest in August and September.
time to do video on best axes or chainsaws lol
I have so many reviews to do on the outdoor gear I have bought over the last year or so I could probably put a video out every day for a couple of months before I get started on the garden maintenance tools, lol
excellent video
now I feel silly, don't know how I missed this video, that starts off saying, "this is skunk cabbage." Lol
Seen it, Love it... Will implement it shortly :D
Usually the return to the sump from tanks would have a much larger outlet of around 32mm - 38mm to cope with the flow - the returns used by Dramatic Aquatics in this video sound like they would be perfect as they have a stainless steel mesh on them: ruclips.net/video/zhr27OFdztM/видео.html
With regard to the flow rate of the pump it would be much better to go for a suitable sized pump of maybe 4000,6000 or 8000 lph (depending on lift) as it will cost much less to run than the 16000 (thinking long term running costs).
You can split the flow of the pump outlet with something like this: geni.us/0f10 which will allow you to get the flow set between tanks and excess vented to sump but there will be so much wasted water recirculating in the sump I would definitely go for a smaller main pump and run the system efficiently.
looking lovely Richard 🖒
No worries, glad you enjoy the video and thanks for watching.
Awesome pond, something I'm hoping to do come springtime but on a much smaller scale : )
Groovy - best of luck with that.
lovely pond and bird tweet very sweet... :)
I'm fortunate to be surrounded by nature where I live and work.
Have you any video or photos of how you constucted the pond? It would make a good video.
Unfortunately it was made before I had a video camera so there is no footage of the construction.
great video. what treatment do you put on your lawn.do you make your own.
I use this: geni.us/2gJq in a spreader which does an awesome job of keeping it green and weed free. I'll do a video on the lawn in a couple of weeks as I have just put a treatment on - just before it rained so it was perfect timing.

Gread vid! How old is your pond? Does it have a liner? Do you top it off or is it now fed by rainwater? Thanks so much! :)
It is approx. 14 years old and it does have a cheap layered PVC liner but we battered about 12" of clay over it to seal it then tapped several springs from the field behind my house and ran them into the pond to keep it topped up.
do you think somehow you could set up a live stream on the pond orbird box
please read this.
let me know what you think . i would love it
thanks dylan
Sounds like a good idea as I have loads of different types of birds nesting around the wood. I have no idea how to do that but I will look into it.
thanks for replying
I have no words... it's just fantastic if i would be there i would definetly start fishing in that pond 😜
If you are local to me you're welcome to fish the pond no worries.
is this pond in your garden love this pond what fish is in it
There were all sorts of coarse fish before the otter started pounding them and now I think there may only be rudd, roach, tench, gudgeon and a few orfe judging by what I have caught in the traps recently.
Do the fish breed and multiply in the pond and how have you prevented otters eating all the fish ?
Thanks
I think the fish which have survived have just been lucky so far, lol
They have mostly bred in the pond, yes.

I would absolutely love to have a pond like that one day! Need some bloody cash first hahaha
I definitely have never regretted putting this in as there is so much wildlife around here now.

You do know that mud ponds are ideal for breeding massive koi and carp? Whats in there anyway carpwise?
The carp used to grow very fast in here but they have since been pounded by the otters and I don't think there are any left.
Otters? You have a small zoo out there. Luckily there's plenty fish left like the perch and roach. Good luck with the pond, cheers!
I think a 12 ft waterfall feature would be pretty sick :)
I had considered building a full on waterfall coming down the high bank side and into the pond - maybe one day but I'm not getting any younger, lol
And a cave while you're at it, that lights up at night :)
lol, NOW you're talking! I could just see water dripping over the entrance and moss all over the stonework.
Make it happen :)
Fulfil my dream haha
If I make the cave deep enough you're welcome to live in it if you ever feel like descending into madness but you will probably have to fight my uncle who would no doubt set up residence there like some sort of crazed hermit.
great pond do you ever fish it with rod and line?
I have done a few times with the kids but after the first dozen or so fish it becomes boring as there is no challenge - I'm not a fan of coarse fishing
+Pondguru Outdoors Thanks for the reply
man i love your pond and seeing the different fish I been waiting on that are there any catfish or bass in there.
We don't have bass in the UK but the European Perch would be the nearest thing. The only native catfish we have in UK is the European Wels but they grow bug enough to eat people so I won't be putting any of those in, lol
Pondguru Outdoors lol thanks for responding.
I've seen the two update videos but don't seem to be able to find anything showing the original construction
FANTASTIC GARDEN YOU HAVE, HOW DEEP IS YOUR POND ?
It is approx. 6m deep in the middle as it is mostly a large bowl shape.
Oh and have you ever seen or heard of a person digging out a section and reinforcing it with plexiglass so you could kind of have a viewing port into your pond?
I haven't sen anyone doing that with a natural clay pond - not sure it could be sealed properly on that type of pond but I have a video in the pond playlist of a previous project made with blocks and bricks which has a viewing window.
love it
I always find it interesting how you have different names for the same plants than we do here in the states. What you seem to be calling Acer we call Japanese maples.
Yes Acer is the Latin name but we also know them as maples too.
Did you build this from scratch or was the pond already there. Either way it's a fantastic job.
It was built from scratch but has naturalized nicely apart from the stirred up clay base clouding the water, lol
You mention crayfish in the pond. Does that mean White Claws or Signals?
interesting. the growing season well underway now .
Finally, yes it is in full swing.
Absolutely beautiful!! i could sleep there all day!! Would love to do that here in s tx but it's so God awful hot here
I could do with some Texan heat now - the nights are about 4 degrees C which isn't much above freezing.
Pondguru man thats cold! It's been pushin 90 Fahrenheit here all week
That sounds awesome - I love saunas but wouldn't like to work inside one.
Pondguru its no picnic, trust me this summer i was sweating it out in 110 degree heat doing mechanic work
Damn that is mighty hot but at least you could fry up some eggs on a car bonnet.
Nice video ^^
No worries, glad you enjoy the video and thanks for watching.
Lovely..
No worries, glad you enjoy the video and thanks for watching.
just subscribed to your channel, loving all the vids. your place looks like a dream place to me, so much right on ya doorstep! anyway keep up the good work!
atb steve.
ps, is that a north east accent?
Yes i live not far west of Newcastle - glad you enjoy the videos and it is indeed awesome to be surrounded by so much wildlife.
Do you ever open for the public to come and see your garden?
Anybody is welcome to take a look but there is really only the pond and dam wall to see as the rest is overgrown woodland.
I'm Rick Harrison, and this, is my pawn shop.
Maybe in your past life you were a Roman Warrior who fought in the Meadows. Lol thanks for sharing
You never know, lol
Awesome pond, did you stock it with those fish?
Yes way back in the day it was stocked with all sorts of fish and they have bred in there.
Is water Hawthorn the same as Broad leaved pond weed ??????
It is similar. Water hawthorn is Aponogeton distachyos and Broad leaved pond weed is Potamageton natans so they are similar in their habit and form but the water hawthorn flowers are way nicer than the broad leaved pondweed flowers which are inconspicuous brown poker shaped growths.
did you show them mallards a barrel
are you going to fish it ?
Bob looks similar to our Scottish wild cats.
Yes if he was bulked out and his tail was fluffed up he'd be a proper wildcat as he already had the strong face and colouration.
How much does it cost to keep your pond running?
It is around £300 a year with that big pump and it is only on 1/3 of the time. Its 1.1kW.
Use a fishing rod with barbless hook it's a lot better than the traps
its a backi trickle filter ?
Yes I will be doing a video on it soon.
I like this guy, nice stonework. Is that a Scottish accent? Also, he's a dead ringer for Fedor Emilienco
Did you set a pond liner?
We used cheap plastic under approx. 30cm of clay so in effect it is clay lined as the plastic liner was pegged down in strips so wouldn't have been water tight by itself.
You need some beer batter for the perch.
I caught a big Perch last week so have footage of that one coming up in the next pond video.
would pike survive in there
Yes they would and did for about a year before they got too big so were fished out and now reside in an 'undisclosed location' lol
Get solar for the pump
Sucks you cannot see your fishes in this kind of ponds :(
