    my back was aching just watching that, I recall how it felt doing my tiny pond....good job it was in time lapse! Great job guys,looks awesome. as for people commenting on the electric fence...it's either that or a net over the top, if you don't protect your pond,the heron will kill all your fish...even the biggest ones!

    Loved your video. I am mid-build on my own and got some great ideas from it. I didnt know whether to put rocks on the bottom or leave it with just the liner - think I will do what you did and just put rocks around the edge and in a shallow end. Looks great! Great time lapse too. Beautiful pond!

    My kinda pond...about double my old sized pond and a hell of a lot deeper, my Matsuba were over 30 inches in length as well as common carp and a 47 inch Blue Orf.....the running thing about the pond was it’s depth, only 18 inches deep, froze winter but with waterfall it kept the pond breathable.....moved home now and couldn’t take them with me...25 years of watching them grow...I do miss the peaceful area...one day perhaps 🤔😉😊

      I live over 75 miles from the ocean and had my 14 and 15"+ koi and 12"+ gold fish taken from my pond by ocean birds. Had to put a net over it. At first I thought it was the racoons or possums doing it. After watching a bird swoop down and take one the net went on. I wish I had an electric fence when a dog decided to go swimming in my pond killing one of my 24" koi breeders and two 15" males. The insurance money didn't begin to cover the cost of losing them.

    Wow what a transformation! There's something so satisfying about seeing the work being done and then seeing the end result. Well, brb now I gotta draw up plans for our koi pond!

  • @deangray1823
    @deangray1823 7 лет назад

    Good video which I watched with great interest. I was expecting to see a bottom drain installed but I guess that didn't figure in your plans. The bottom drain really makes the maintenance a lot easier. Anyway you've created a beautiful pond with the ability to harvest fry. My pond is extremely low maintenance with a half dozen bluegills to take care of any fry.

    • @StuartDWright
      @StuartDWright  7 лет назад

      Thank you. I had never heard of a pond drain until someone else here asked about it. The guy who did the work for us did not suggest adding a drain, probably because we were working to a strict budget, all of the pond has a concrete lining except the deepest part, and adding a drain and pipework would have been difficult and expensive because we would have to have excavated a 'tunnel' to 5 feet under ground, under the concrete liner.

    • @deangray1823
      @deangray1823 7 лет назад

      I appreciate your situation, adding a bottom drain now would be extremely difficult. I have a similar dilemma. Although I installed a bottom drain in my pond, I really should have gone larger. I used 2" drain fixture and pipe but should have used 4". An option open to you, if you wanted to do an upgrade, might be to install a bottom drain fixture which sits on top of your liner (at lowest part of your pond) and is piped out to a pump. Again, I enjoyed your video and appreciate you took the time to put it on RUclips.

    Why did you put a bottom drain when everything was pulled? That would have helped create better water movement in the water column.
    I enjoyed the time lapse.

    • @StuartDWright
      @StuartDWright  4 года назад +1

      Thanks. Do you mean why *didn't* we put in a bottom drain? There's a pump and pipe going to the side of the pond and up under ground to the filters. It's located at the bottom of the deepest part so that it's easy to pull out and maintain. It does the job fine without having to do lots of digging to put in a drain and more pipework.

      StuartDWright yes, “didn’t”. Autocorrect got the best of me on that one.

    A lovely pond and great renovation; but I feel sorry for the duck/goose that can't access the water ☹️. I have a large natural pond which was full of carp until it nearly dried up two yrs ago. Most died but several survived and the pond refilled. We had to renovate too, but it measures 50ft x150ft, so took almost 2 yrs to do! The fish share the pond with lots of wildlife- ducks, moorhens and now wild geese are nesting on the island.. we're in East Anglia.

Not like you put that out there as a big food bowl for the local Herons, who might not care! So I understand the purpose. Looks like a natural little pond/ecosystem. I didn't see anything that could be used for filtration systems. I have 2 pumps set up for filtering the water and still have to suction the bottom at least once every two weeks plus the filters. Everyone who thinks the work is done after being built needs to be aware that the ponds need to be cleaned every week, maybe 2 at the most. The fry area will become a rotting mess and stink to high heaven if not cleaned.

    What are you doing about a filtration system and cleaning? I see the waterfall and plants for oxygen and water waste removal but didn't see anything for the bottom and ledges. I'm lucky enough to have a pond I can hand vacuum with a sump. But even with 2 filters that has to be done every week or two. I live 75 miles from the ocean and had herons or other birds taking the fish and had to devise a net cover because they weren't afraid of my owl decoy. I've been lucky enough that the racoons and possums have stayed away. Other than a dog going swimming and killing 3 koi I've been blessed with no problems these last 15 years counting 3 hurricanes and a tropical storm. Always have backup power options.
