I have literally no desire to build a pond, but I've reached an unimaginable level of boredom during quarantine, so here I am. Thankfully, I find this whole process incredibly fascinating. Thanks for sharing!
I really enjoyed the video, i retired two years ago from a life time of building custom homes and I'm getting ready to build my wife and myself her dream house about 16 Miles out of Town on the farm i grew up on
I have a a natural stream on my property so I dug out my pond in a pre-existing basin excavating it to where the deepest end was 12ft after rocking it in and the shallow end was 4ft i built 2 feeder streams one going downhill to the pond, the other leading uphill from the pond back to the stream so I could naturally fill it and deal with any run off going back to the river further upstream. I made sure the main feeder stream was 2ft deep so any fish could come thru. This was about 6 years ago and even though I have never added a single fish to the pond it still has fish in it that moved from the creek and even some that where actually born there! It took my nearly 2 weeks to finish but its 100% self sustaining almost as if it was always there :) if you have a stream on your property I highly recommend doing it this way! Very rewarding aswell!
Emphasis on the add very little fish because of the ammonia they'll produce. Also you can put in barley straw which you can find online or at feedin irrigation stores. Barley straw kills algae and removes co2 buildup, which helps your fish. Barley straw is basically the organic equivalent of a UV electric clarifier.

I'm New here today. I loved what you did to the pond. Sure wish it wasn't so expensive to build. There're three raven that come everyday to get a drink and seed. They also fly in with food from a restaurant that's not far from us, just to wash off a bone or two then feast. I used to run off some of the birds that I know hunt the squirrels and even a bird or two but I just gave up. You learn by watching them.the squirrels and birds 🐦 eat next to each other so why run them off. We just put the seed on a couple of flat sidewalk stone and let them go at it. The squirrels fight to show who eats first. The babies have to wait. I like watching the cardinals feed their babies went they leave their nest. Sometime it's like a darn zoo but it gives this old housebound granny and gramps something for our enjoyment. Right now there's a dove taking her bath. I thank god for nature.
Very nice! A friend of mines grandparents built a small pond when they built their new house on the property of their business. They ran a pipe from their well and fed constant well water. Well, before they could add any fish a big flood came and caused the bayou to overflow and flooded the whole property. When the water went back down the pond was stocked with fish and turtles. We ended up releasing my gulf coast soft shell turtle in it. I plan on building one when I build a house in the country.
Looks fantastic!!! When I was digging my pond, I accidentally broke a storm drain pipe! However thanks to advice I used it to my advantage and created an overflow system 😀 so never have to worry about the pond in bad weather
I'm building a pond with no liner. I'm actually draining a 30,000 gallon pool to help get it going. There was a giant stump that I build a fire pit around and after it got big enough I drain the pool water into the hole. All the ash helps hold the water in, so far. If it all drains through I'll just get a liner. The pool draining into the hole really helped expand it fast. as it filled the walls caved in and it keeps getting bigger, I just dig out the mud and fill pot holes in the yard.
Very useful. Piping in water from other sources is a great idea I haven't considered. Plus your tip about how to control the surface area size was also helpful. Thanks for sharing.
When I dug one of my ponds over a known groundwater spring I hit an old 12" corrugated drain tile that was apparently clogged at the end... It shot water 12' into the air for two weeks before the pressure behind it was finally relieved... lol Scared the crap out of me when i hit it. I thought I'd hit a main or something. I still don't know where that tile originates from or how far it goes but I know it was definitely installed to divert the spring from somewhere else on the property. The pond has been awesome and with the high cold water flow we've been able to grow some really nice trout!
I would build a small water fall that is powered by a small solar powered pump. At the base of the fall would be gravel so there is little erosion. and onto that bed of gravel, fresh water clams. They eat whatever is not eaten by the fish and eat the algae that would cloud the water. Also too, the waterfall aerates the pond and make for healthier ecosystem and fish. Spring Creek The only predator but that migrates to ponds that are not connected via creeks or underground water source, would be the oarsman. And they not only eat mosquitos, but also bite young fry and cause infections that eventually kill the fry off. Having a shallow area for dragonfly to hunt and lay their eggs will help control the oarsman. As for water weed control, grass carp work very well at this and can be harvested and eaten as a food fish. And to control the grass carp population would be the crappie. In TN it has become a commercial food fish and is quickly replacing the talapia in stores and restaurants. The crappie is an indiscriminate predatory fish that I prefer over bass for flavor and texture. So, plenty of rocks for hiding places and plenty of plants with the right eco system to keep it all under control and thriving. BTW, I've been working with aquaculture since I was a kid, that is over 50 years at it now. Just might know a thing or two that work best outside secular box type concepts.
You might want to brush up on your aquatic insect ecology. Releasing anything other than sterile grass carp should also be a felony. I am not aware of the habitats you have designed or managed, but your suggestions here are very dangerous!
Spring Creek Actually it might be you who needs to brush up a bit. Here in MO, grass carp are sold for ponds in local hardware stores along with other fish to stock ponds with. And since we would not be connected to any other water way, there are very few aquatic insects that will migrate over dry land to get into a pond. While you speak of what is dangerous, you might want to study each states laws first before writing stuff online as if you are some sort of expert. I have built ponds in CA, WA, OR and now in MO. All of them are not in anyway connected to each of those states water ways and thus were legal to have most any kind of fish we could get to live there. And in each of those states, there is no laws on grass carp if it is a private pond not connected to those state's water way or near them. Now, if I was close to a major river, creek, or any lake, especially the great lakes, then I would not use grass carp. I would instead use common koi carp as they also eat most water weeds and grasses, especially milfoil.

Excellent video as I am struggling to figure out what to do with my pond. I just dug it. Could be deeper but it's a pretty good size pond. Anyhow I dug about 5-7 feet before hitting shell. Well my pond holds water but is very merky light brown. Build a big biological filter? I have some really thick, almost like rubber, plastic. It has a hole or three here and there. Should I lay it in there and then pump the water through a filter? To hold down the silt?

There is also a natural ditch that runs through that part of the property that carries rainwater run-off to the stream from a neighboring farm field. My idea was to build a pond in this area allowing the farm run-off to collect in the pond and then having a pipe from the pond to carry excess water into the stream. Does sound like a reasonable way to manage the natural water sources, and if so, do you think this would be a DIY project I could manage with my small tractor (with loader), or am I better off hiring a professional? My hope was to keep cost to a minimum. Any advice would be appreciated.

not easy with the water level changing over the year, you would have to use liner an refill the evaporated water constantly to keep it 1 ft deep over the year
The pond Im working on Im putting a bunch or really big round rocks all around the pond and carving simple face on so when it starts getting over grown a little it will look pretty weird lol
We have a natural pond in a fixer upper we just bought. It was full of cattails and debris. The pond is dry now as we haven’t had any rain here in Montana for a bit and it’s been hot. I cleaned it out yesterday removing all the cattails and as much of the sticks, dead leaves, etc. as I could. I know there’s “mulched” material in between all of the rocks at the bottom, which will be impossible to remove without taking out a million rocks. We want to get this pond in shape again, but I’m at a loss as to where to go from here. The pond is a kidney shape - about 35/40 feet long and about 4-1/2 feet deep in the middle. Do we add an aerator and some sort of filter to clean out what’s left in it? If so, what type? There are no pond experts anywhere near our small town to help us with this. Oh, the only water source for this pond is rain or a hose using our well water.
if your noticing too much nutrients you can try seeding with local breeds of freshwater clam/muscle/crawfish and harvesting them occasionally to remove nutrients in the form of food.
Liners really aren't necessary for ponds like this anyways. If you're putting in fish, put in some grass carp. They'll help keep the water clean without having to add a filter.
Hi , looking to build a large pond, small lake in Morocco (Hot country ) no liner as its clay soil as you said is ok . Any suggestions or advice appreciated
This is great. We had a O shaped pond dug up in our front lawn.. the ground is all clay. I have ducks and geese. They ate all the plants we put in twice. Now I have a big algae problem. I want a natural pond but finding it impossible to have clear and clean water since the clay gives it that grayish beige look to the water and the algae forms on top quickly. Now I have to get some filters and put them in which I did not want to have to do. Do you have any ideas what I could do instead of using pumps and filters?
+Bg Labelle 1. To suppress the clay dissolving in the water try lining the pond with gravel. 2. A natural remedy for algae is barley straw, tie in a bundle and float on the surface . 3. more plants (again) and keep the poultry away ( or off the plants at lease), I have similar problems. I hope you find a solution without all the technology, pumps and filters.
@@BeautifuLakesStreamsBiologists Ouch... You're obviously highly skilled at making wonderful water features so it would have been kinder and better for your reputation if you'd shared even a little bit of your expert advice instead of being sarcastic... Just sayin'.
@@WebbyWunda no sarcasm in our statement. We were simply gauging their expectations since there is often a gap between hopes and realities. As you will see , we offered a bit of general guidance below in the comments.
I'm off-grid in central Florida where my soil is fine sugar sand. I dug a hole about 5' deep, 10' wide by 15 long on a low side of my property to elevate a driveway and tiny house pad and create a great spot to collect water runoffs from the rest of the property. I want to build a natural low-cost pond there possibly with no liner. Right now the hole is so sandy and porous water does not collect. A lock rock shop sells Marl really cheap would that help? Thinking about just mixing in some Portland cement 10:1 and coating with a sealer?? Also If I install a 45mil liner (which I think often looks ugly) I want the top lip to bend out about 2' below ground level and 1' below the water level so it's never visible. In addition thinking about just dropping a 500 gallon tube at the bottom and working naturally around that too. Any suggestions?
Fish are needed because mosquitoes hang around near the water. They do tend to get near the surface of the water, so the fish can jump a little bit to grab the mosquitoes.

not easy with the water level changing over the year, you would have to use liner an refill the evaporated water constantly to keep it 1 ft deep over the year
Shoutout to the Bengals hat!
The pond Im working on Im putting a bunch or really big round rocks all around the pond and carving simple face on so when it starts getting over grown a little it will look pretty weird lol
Great video. Just got my first backyard natural pond for ducks. Will put in mosquito pod to keep them at bay.
Oh, the only water source for this pond is rain or a hose using our well water.
one of the best pond videos I have ever watch !!
That’s a dope ass pond Carl
Nice pond design
epic my man!!
Very educational. And very resourceful. Great job!
Go to your local well driller and buy a couple bags of bentonite. Dump into your pond. It should seal it.
*Restoring old vintage rusty pond*
For a second there @ 3:45 I thought it was a grizzly. Lol.
Dtt4 😂😂😂😂😂😂 thought so too as well
I really love this! Very nice!
Very beautiful pond
Beautiful, I think I'm gonna make the commitment and put a pond in my back yard. I hope it won't clash with my neighbors pond.
hmm are you concerned about the koi reaching the drainage ditch and then possibly other waterways?
thank you very much. has it got to be clay .what stops the water from going through the soil please
this is very cool man I wanna build a homestead. for my gardening and growing food I wanna make a natural pond so I can build a floating garden
Thank ya gave me some interesting ideas . I have a water issue in my backyard
Love the dog too!
if your noticing too much nutrients you can try seeding with local breeds of freshwater clam/muscle/crawfish and harvesting them occasionally to remove nutrients in the form of food.
Let's be the change we wish to see! 💚
Thank you so much especially when you mentioned the depth of it...
The depth will help with algae and also give your fish the ability to hide from predators
awesome mate!! 2 weeks later it is dry ;)
10 years later it has still water
Liners really aren't necessary for ponds like this anyways. If you're putting in fish, put in some grass carp. They'll help keep the water clean without having to add a filter.
A real expert!
Love this! Great vid & build.
Hi , looking to build a large pond, small lake in Morocco (Hot country ) no liner as its clay soil as you said is ok . Any suggestions or advice appreciated
Jason Mckean Sigh...I love Morocco! ♥️
Beautiful, and I love that Newfie!
water from the ditch is the key here
Great video and fantastic job.
Such a Love pond!
Bg Labelle Aeration should help with the algae problem.
Were you disappointed when that did not work?

Ouch...
Good job beautiful and good for our ecosystem as well ❤
Thats a beautiful mosquito factory you have there.
Why do you need fish? You don't think other things eat mosquitoes?
i eat mosquitos all day
Fish are needed because mosquitoes hang around near the water. They do tend to get near the surface of the water, so the fish can jump a little bit to grab the mosquitoes.
Natural Ponds Lakes & Streams by Spring Creek Aquatic Concepts SOME CHICKENS & bat houses we never had a problem
Seth Winters wow dude. Mosauitos lay eggs in water. Stop thinking so hard before you hurt your brain!
I have huge Lake in my farm property but gets dry in summer, I was thinking about adding some fish there and make it a productive ecosystem
