    Thank you, I wake up at 4 am while on retreats and 8 usually and start work at 10 after lying in bed, yoga and meditation and a slow breakfast. Never been healthier or more effective. Six hours a day tops and laser focused during that time.

    I love the callout that we wear busy-ness as a badge of honor. It's so not a badge of honor. Getting it done and having time to do what you love BEYOND the "busy-ness" is the real honor.

      @lauriexwang  Месяц назад +1

      You’re absolutely right-busy-ness is overrated. The real win is crossing important tasks off the list and having time for what truly matters. Here's to trading in the "busy badge" for some well-earned joy and freedom! 😊

    I have to admit, I always question men, especially of the older generation, who add in "raising a family" into their list of things that kept them busy because, aside from (hopefully) making time to spend with their family, the majority of men put very little time in the actual raising and care of children. They were better able than their female counterparts to dedicate time to deep focus. It's why I prefer getting tips from women who have to juggle all of that. It's more relatable and often more astute advice.

      Thank you! So many of the “perfect” routines we see online can feel unrealistic and difficult to maintain in real life. While some routines may work for a few people, life is messy and unpredictable, making it hard to stick to rigid schedules. It’s all about finding what works for you-whether that’s a simple, flexible routine or just small habits that fit into your day.

    Love the video! I can relate to almost everything you mentioned. I have a (maybe silly) question: When do you fit in all the other tasks that aren’t related to deep work but still take energy? Like ordering things for the kids, making doctor appointments, reading reviews online for the perfect sneakers :-) those tasks that aren’t exactly ‘deep’ but still require attention. I can’t do them around the kids because they need some focus, but I also can’t do them in the evenings after putting the kids to bed, as I’m usually exhausted and need time for things that aren’t just ‘must dos". You fit them in between the deep focusing sessions?

    • @lauriexwang
      @lauriexwang  18 дней назад +1

      Not silly at all-this is such a relatable challenge! Those "life admin" tasks may not be deep work, but they do require focus and energy. I try to group them together into small pockets of time, like the end of a lunch break or just before winding down for the day, when I don’t have the energy for deep work but can still tackle lighter tasks. Sometimes, a short midday “admin break” helps, so these tasks don’t build up. It's a bit of a balancing act, but finding those pockets helps me keep momentum without pulling too much from the focused work or family time. 😊

    Something else that can be really helpful is also blocking time to worry, it might be counterintuitive but if you (like me) are someone who worries a lot, finding an defined time just to worry will help you re-focusing on your tasks knowing that later will come the "worry time". During the worry time slot it is also useful to journal/write down your worries and to-dos. It has helped me a lot in the past

      🙌 Life is perfectly imperfect and I believe that we all have our own way of figuring out what works for us to work at our best. Good video. I think it’s a matter of phrasing but I disagree that it’s about not having enough time (1:53), though I recognise you go on to talk about distractions which is fair. To rephrase: it’s not about having insufficient time, it’s that we use that time badly by becoming distracted and not prioritising how we use our time.

    • @lauriexwang
      @lauriexwang  4 месяца назад +2

      Yep I totally understand from a parent perspective. If my 4 yr old daughter isn't at school, I don't think I would get the chance to get any deep work done. You are doing the best you can given your current situation and time available, embrace this season because you get more time with your child (that's what I did before we had better options of childcare), and everyone's pace of life is different at each stage ❤️ Maybe enlist a family member or friend to provide some alternative childcare while you are figuring it out. You've got this!

    I live with my girlfriend and we totally cut from rent to save for buying our own house... So we currently live in a studio apartment where kitchen, bedroom, living room and my home office are in the same place... Believe me it feels horrible especially if you are coming from a bigger house... Anyways, I am an engineer and I have to focus intenselly. Last 2 months was a mess for me, allways postponing tasks, not doing them etc... I have noise cancelling earphones and they work great. I bought a standing desk... And I use in stand mode in my morning hours and I move it to sitting position after midday. It surprisingly worked very well, I would suggest changing the way you work if you are sitting or if you try to work on bed/sofa etc, try to do while standing.

    I really enjoyed your video and advice, just yesterday I started watching video tutorials and how to create content, use canva and it all seemed overwhelming and like you said after 2-3 hours of researching and how to start I felt afraid and thinking I can't do this, I'm not in my 20's or 30's I'm in my mid 50's. So each day I will go back again, train and learn and rinse repeat, keep doing it til I feel less scared and more secure and create my own video or blog. I work at an office and stare at 2 screens all day, it's not a fulfilling job and there is no praise or raise for doing a job well done. I want to create my own business and be proud of my own creation and move forward and live life with experiences and travel, that to me makes my life fulfilling. I feel like I'm in a time crunch as everything I do at my job is brainless and AI could definitely do my job so I have to do this now before that happesn. Thanks for your video 🙂🤗

      I use my calendar to do time blocking on my tasks (they are a bit combined due to the nature of my work) And I batch my tasks together to make it efficiently done in one go without context switching, will share this in a upcoming video on time management 🙌

    • @lauriexwang
      @lauriexwang  Месяц назад +2

      It's a method of working, rather than an app. I shared a lot of ideas here that I learned and applied from Cal Newport's book Deep Work. It's how we structure our time intentionally to focus deep on a specific task that requires concentration. How do you know the difference between loving it and something just becoming hard. I start out, and i am fired up then it fizzles out, and i start looking to go back to old things i have tried beforehand as my mind starts to drift and become bored and lack motivation to continue on my current project

    • @lauriexwang
      @lauriexwang  5 месяцев назад +5

      Thanks for sharing your experience. It can be tough to tell the difference between genuinely loving something and just hitting a hard spot. Try reflecting on how you feel about the core activity, not just the challenges. Passion often pushes through obstacles. Breaking your project into smaller tasks and celebrating little wins might help keep your motivation up. Keeping a journal of your progress and feelings can also give you some clarity. Have you tried any strategies to stay motivated?
      Also, there is a video coming out on this which talk about reframing the activity, keep an eye out for it in the coming weeks!

    • @lauriexwang
      @lauriexwang  Месяц назад +3

      It’s more about focusing on progress over time and developing deeper work habits that are sustainable, rather than following a strict timeline. But if you can follow deep work (I personally benefitted from this method as a busy Mum who runs my own business) for a period up to 6 months, you will see a difference in your work quality and working less while achieving more. Everyone’s journey is different, and tracking your own growth at your pace can be more powerful than a fixed plan.

      Absolutely! Transformation truly is a gradual process, and it’s amazing how small, consistent efforts can lead to lasting change over time. It’s easy to get caught up in wanting quick results, but committing to the journey and embracing the growth along the way is what really makes the difference.

    imo, a lot of the trouble stems from Citizens United and the enormous amounts of dark money in politics - on both sides. When SCOTUS ruled that corporations are people, dark money poured in, PACS took over, and candidates began to focus more of their efforts toward getting that money. Regular middle-class and poor folks can't compete with that.
    There's more going on of course, but we do need to look at the roots of decline in our democratic system.

    Its so easy to blabla and just talk teoreticaly about things ) BUT usualy its all fine when you freelancer or you are in charge etc, but almost non of this going to work for regular working person. The reason is simple, this person depend of to many factors he can not change but you must to do. And if you dont, there is another one who can do this and you lose your job. Its all depends of course.

    • @lauriexwang
      @lauriexwang  2 месяца назад +2

      I totally get where you're coming from. It’s true that for most people in regular jobs, there are external pressures and factors that make it hard to implement things like "deep work" in the same way freelancers or those in control of their schedules can. But I think it's all about adapting the concept to your situation. Instead of aiming for long, uninterrupted stretches, finding pockets of focused time, even if it's just 30 minutes to an hour in your calendar, can still make a big difference. It’s about being flexible with what’s possible in your environment and finding ways to work smarter within those constraints. Everyone's situation is different, and I appreciate your perspective!

    With severe ADHD life is exhausting.

    • @lauriexwang
      @lauriexwang  2 месяца назад +3

      Managing severe ADHD can indeed make daily tasks and focusing on deep work incredibly challenging. Finding strategies that work specifically for you, such as breaking tasks into smaller steps, batching similar tasks together to minimize distractions and taking frequent breaks might help. Remember to be kind to yourself and recognize that it’s okay to adapt approaches to fit your needs.
