"The ability to focus in a highly distracted world is the ultimate super power". 🙌Loved this. A powerful reminder and video to help those who need to learn the art of focus in this modern way of working.
Thank you, I wake up at 4 am while on retreats and 8 usually and start work at 10 after lying in bed, yoga and meditation and a slow breakfast. Never been healthier or more effective. Six hours a day tops and laser focused during that time.
That's impressive with 6 hours of focused work! I like your method of a slower start to ease into the day, sounds heavenly. Thanks for sharing your routine too 🙌
I love the callout that we wear busy-ness as a badge of honor. It's so not a badge of honor. Getting it done and having time to do what you love BEYOND the "busy-ness" is the real honor.
You’re absolutely right-busy-ness is overrated. The real win is crossing important tasks off the list and having time for what truly matters. Here's to trading in the "busy badge" for some well-earned joy and freedom! 😊
Hey!! just wanted to let you know that your journal prompt guide is actually so helpful! i wasn't expecting much when I decided to click through, just because I've downloaded other journal prompt guides before, but yours is actually really great. It's helping me refocus my direction, but also process/ reflect and let go of things that have been holding me down.
I'm so glad to hear that the journal prompt guide has been helpful for you. It's so good to know that it's helping you in refocusing and processing things. Your feedback means a lot, and I'm glad you decided to give it a try. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Keep up the great work! 🙌❤️
Cal Newport’s podcast Deep Questions has radically changed how I manage my days. I work in the knowledge sector but I’m just a regular person too. Fully recommend it
I have to admit, I always question men, especially of the older generation, who add in "raising a family" into their list of things that kept them busy because, aside from (hopefully) making time to spend with their family, the majority of men put very little time in the actual raising and care of children. They were better able than their female counterparts to dedicate time to deep focus. It's why I prefer getting tips from women who have to juggle all of that. It's more relatable and often more astute advice.
Thank you! So many of the “perfect” routines we see online can feel unrealistic and difficult to maintain in real life. While some routines may work for a few people, life is messy and unpredictable, making it hard to stick to rigid schedules. It’s all about finding what works for you-whether that’s a simple, flexible routine or just small habits that fit into your day.
Focus is my word of the year, great tips to help me invrease my output in less time with a 4 year old daughter, full time job and volunteering and running my leadership coaching business!
SMART goals are important. As an early full retiree I cringed at 'building your online brand' as a goal. Gotta be specific as you know. Thanks for what you do!
I just added Forest to my browser. I get crazy distracted with my surfing when I should be totally focused. Laurie, thanks for your time and for the video. I find the tonal quality of your voice soothing and relaxing. Good frequency = good vibes. Stay focused!
You are so welcome! I'm glad that you found this helpful, good vibes indeed 😀 You can do this and you are not alone, we all tend to get distracted and awareness really is the first step to start taking control.
Hi laurie I have came to understand that deep work is new and it's helpful towards focusing on what you need to achieve in order to who you want to become and how to achieve it
I'm glad to hear that you've discovered the concept of deep work and find it helpful for focusing on your goals. It's such a powerful practice for me on achieving meaningful progress on anything I'm working on.
Love the video! I can relate to almost everything you mentioned. I have a (maybe silly) question: When do you fit in all the other tasks that aren’t related to deep work but still take energy? Like ordering things for the kids, making doctor appointments, reading reviews online for the perfect sneakers :-) those tasks that aren’t exactly ‘deep’ but still require attention. I can’t do them around the kids because they need some focus, but I also can’t do them in the evenings after putting the kids to bed, as I’m usually exhausted and need time for things that aren’t just ‘must dos". You fit them in between the deep focusing sessions?
Not silly at all-this is such a relatable challenge! Those "life admin" tasks may not be deep work, but they do require focus and energy. I try to group them together into small pockets of time, like the end of a lunch break or just before winding down for the day, when I don’t have the energy for deep work but can still tackle lighter tasks. Sometimes, a short midday “admin break” helps, so these tasks don’t build up. It's a bit of a balancing act, but finding those pockets helps me keep momentum without pulling too much from the focused work or family time. 😊
Something else that can be really helpful is also blocking time to worry, it might be counterintuitive but if you (like me) are someone who worries a lot, finding an defined time just to worry will help you re-focusing on your tasks knowing that later will come the "worry time". During the worry time slot it is also useful to journal/write down your worries and to-dos. It has helped me a lot in the past
That's such a great suggestion! I love how you mentioned journaling during that time too-writing things down can really clear the mental clutter. Thanks for sharing this tip; I’m sure it will help many others! 😊
I'm so glad to hear that it resonated with you! Content creation can be a tricky process. Keep pushing forward-you’ve got this! Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. ❤️
So many helpful tips in this video, I also have a 4 year old, so can relate to the need to really maximise time for productivity with ‘doing more in less time’ consistently. Cal Newport’s Deep Work is on my bedside table , so can’t wait to get stuck in!
Found your channel recently and I love it. Interesting point in my life in my 30s trying to figure something different out, appreciate your content very much and will use your methods.
Thank you! I’m really glad that I can be part of that change and journey for you, looking forward to hearing about your progress and next steps on this exciting point of change in your life.
You're absolutely right-distraction is such a big challenge, especially with how connected we all are. Deep work can feel elusive, but with a bit of discipline and small changes, we can all carve out focused time for meaningful work. Thank you for sharing, and I’m glad you found the video helpful!
"I'm not someone with a 4AM morning routine jumping into an ice bath drinking a green juice while doing press-ups with one finger telling you that you need to do more" That part
🙌 Life is perfectly imperfect and I believe that we all have our own way of figuring out what works for us to work at our best. While these types of morning routines we see prolific online maybe work for some (and that's great), it's too rigid for me personally to make it work in my real life. 😀
Good video. I think it’s a matter of phrasing but I disagree that it’s about not having enough time (1:53), though I recognise you go on to talk about distractions which is fair. To rephrase: it’s not about having insufficient time, it’s that we use that time badly by becoming distracted and not prioritising how we use our time.
Thanks for your thoughtful feedback! You make a great point-it’s more about how we use our time rather than not having enough. Prioritizing is the key, appreciate you for sharing your thoughts.
thank you so much, that was helpful , i get excited and i wrote about 8 pages to summarize these ideas and the techniques that mentioned in the video .
Thank you for this video Laurie! I watched it 3 times back to back because it is so on point, especially about the distractions. I'm a new fan of you for sure!! 👊
You are so welcome! I'm glad you found this video helpful, especially watching it over again to get the notes down. Can't wait to hear your updates on trying this out. 🙌
love your video! Every time I deepwork (I so much am a flow person!!!) the whole household seems to break down. Not sure how to bring family needs and mine together...... (3,5 y o here)
Yep I totally understand from a parent perspective. If my 4 yr old daughter isn't at school, I don't think I would get the chance to get any deep work done. You are doing the best you can given your current situation and time available, embrace this season because you get more time with your child (that's what I did before we had better options of childcare), and everyone's pace of life is different at each stage ❤️ Maybe enlist a family member or friend to provide some alternative childcare while you are figuring it out. You've got this!
I live with my girlfriend and we totally cut from rent to save for buying our own house... So we currently live in a studio apartment where kitchen, bedroom, living room and my home office are in the same place... Believe me it feels horrible especially if you are coming from a bigger house... Anyways, I am an engineer and I have to focus intenselly. Last 2 months was a mess for me, allways postponing tasks, not doing them etc... I have noise cancelling earphones and they work great. I bought a standing desk... And I use in stand mode in my morning hours and I move it to sitting position after midday. It surprisingly worked very well, I would suggest changing the way you work if you are sitting or if you try to work on bed/sofa etc, try to do while standing.
I love how you mentioned this technique briefly in the last video Laurie, and thought it was such an important reminder to work less but smarter. And thanks so much for sharing this video, I learned a lot on how I can work in a much more focused way going forward. 💛
I really enjoyed your video and advice, just yesterday I started watching video tutorials and how to create content, use canva and it all seemed overwhelming and like you said after 2-3 hours of researching and how to start I felt afraid and thinking I can't do this, I'm not in my 20's or 30's I'm in my mid 50's. So each day I will go back again, train and learn and rinse repeat, keep doing it til I feel less scared and more secure and create my own video or blog. I work at an office and stare at 2 screens all day, it's not a fulfilling job and there is no praise or raise for doing a job well done. I want to create my own business and be proud of my own creation and move forward and live life with experiences and travel, that to me makes my life fulfilling. I feel like I'm in a time crunch as everything I do at my job is brainless and AI could definitely do my job so I have to do this now before that happesn. Thanks for your video 🙂🤗
Thank you for sharing your journey! It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed when starting something new, especially when venturing into the creative space later in life. But your mindset of going back, learning, and pushing through the fear is exactly what's needed to succeed. You’re already on the right path by taking small, consistent steps. The fact that you're thinking about creating something meaningful and fulfilling for yourself is inspiring. Don’t worry about age-it’s never too late to start! Keep going, and trust the process. You’ve got this! 🙌❤️
Thank you for sharing. The idea that taking on a task out of a sense of responsibility can actually lead to increased work efficiency resonates with me. It reminds me of how scheduling dedicated time for exercise helps me better manage my time while searching for a new job.
Really glad to hear that! It's amazing how taking on tasks with a sense of responsibility, like exercise or job searching, can bring more structure and efficiency to our day. It’s a great reminder of how balance and intentionality can lead to better time management.
How do we get on the waitlist for office hours? Im about to try incorporating Motion AI to help with the constant feeling of not knowing what to focus on and having too many "open cycles' Wonderful video thank you!
I find it helpful to think, "What's in it for me?" so that it's clear what the rationale for the work is and, ideally, the motivation to see the end result.
That's a great perspective! Keeping the "What's in it for me?" mindset can really help clarify the purpose behind the work and keep you motivated. It's like a personal reminder of the end goal and why the effort is worth it. Thanks for sharing this-it’s a useful way to stay focused!
I teach in Taiwan 🇹🇼 for a living and I find that university students can’t focus in the face of their cell phones 📱. They remind me of children who can’t let go of their favorite toys 🧸.
Are you a Filipino ? I'm here in Taiwan too working as a caregiver, I used my phone intentionally for learning and improving myself during my spare time
Question: what do you use to schedule your task not family task but work, projects, studying, etc. thank you so much and my deep work I feel I can do way more I work a 8-5pm and no kids but a lot of projects and learning since I am transitioning into a full stack engineer
I use my calendar to do time blocking on my tasks (they are a bit combined due to the nature of my work) And I batch my tasks together to make it efficiently done in one go without context switching, will share this in a upcoming video on time management 🙌
I work in an office so sometimes id rather be on here than working because if i dont show im working they will give me more work to do without additional pay.
I'm really sorry to hear that you're feeling this way. It’s tough when life gets overwhelming, and I want you to know that you're not alone in feeling this. I hope that my videos can help to provide some support through those tough times. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help and reach out to others too. Take care of yourself!
It's a method of working, rather than an app. I shared a lot of ideas here that I learned and applied from Cal Newport's book Deep Work. It's how we structure our time intentionally to focus deep on a specific task that requires concentration. You can also check out more time management tips in this recent video here: ruclips.net/video/zknhQ_K2A70/видео.html
I like where you say we underestimate our potential, but how would it work for a person reaching 60 years of age, what kind of potential, what kind of super power can an older person have whos sick of their job.
How do you know the difference between loving it and something just becoming hard. I start out, and i am fired up then it fizzles out, and i start looking to go back to old things i have tried beforehand as my mind starts to drift and become bored and lack motivation to continue on my current project
Thanks for sharing your experience. It can be tough to tell the difference between genuinely loving something and just hitting a hard spot. Try reflecting on how you feel about the core activity, not just the challenges. Passion often pushes through obstacles. Breaking your project into smaller tasks and celebrating little wins might help keep your motivation up. Keeping a journal of your progress and feelings can also give you some clarity. Have you tried any strategies to stay motivated? Also, there is a video coming out on this which talk about reframing the activity, keep an eye out for it in the coming weeks!
It’s more about focusing on progress over time and developing deeper work habits that are sustainable, rather than following a strict timeline. But if you can follow deep work (I personally benefitted from this method as a busy Mum who runs my own business) for a period up to 6 months, you will see a difference in your work quality and working less while achieving more. Everyone’s journey is different, and tracking your own growth at your pace can be more powerful than a fixed plan.
Absolutely! Transformation truly is a gradual process, and it’s amazing how small, consistent efforts can lead to lasting change over time. It’s easy to get caught up in wanting quick results, but committing to the journey and embracing the growth along the way is what really makes the difference.
Thank you. You are right and I can imagine this method of deep work can be tricky for those especially with ADHD. Everyone’s journey and situation is different, and what matters most is finding the balance that helps you thrive.
imo, a lot of the trouble stems from Citizens United and the enormous amounts of dark money in politics - on both sides. When SCOTUS ruled that corporations are people, dark money poured in, PACS took over, and candidates began to focus more of their efforts toward getting that money. Regular middle-class and poor folks can't compete with that. There's more going on of course, but we do need to look at the roots of decline in our democratic system.
Its so easy to blabla and just talk teoreticaly about things ) BUT usualy its all fine when you freelancer or you are in charge etc, but almost non of this going to work for regular working person. The reason is simple, this person depend of to many factors he can not change but you must to do. And if you dont, there is another one who can do this and you lose your job. Its all depends of course.
I totally get where you're coming from. It’s true that for most people in regular jobs, there are external pressures and factors that make it hard to implement things like "deep work" in the same way freelancers or those in control of their schedules can. But I think it's all about adapting the concept to your situation. Instead of aiming for long, uninterrupted stretches, finding pockets of focused time, even if it's just 30 minutes to an hour in your calendar, can still make a big difference. It’s about being flexible with what’s possible in your environment and finding ways to work smarter within those constraints. Everyone's situation is different, and I appreciate your perspective!
Managing severe ADHD can indeed make daily tasks and focusing on deep work incredibly challenging. Finding strategies that work specifically for you, such as breaking tasks into smaller steps, batching similar tasks together to minimize distractions and taking frequent breaks might help. Remember to be kind to yourself and recognize that it’s okay to adapt approaches to fit your needs.

Change is hard but it's not impossible. I get distracted easily.
Definitely, one of the biggest struggle that I had, and deep work helped me to train my mind to focus. We all have off days, so you are not alone.
Distractions are normal. Consistent actions towards our goals make the difference. Even an 1% change is remarkable.
One should always keep this question in mind: just because it’s hard it isn’t worth it?

Not silly at all-this is such a relatable challenge! Those "life admin" tasks may not be deep work, but they do require focus and energy. I try to group them together into small pockets of time, like the end of a lunch break or just before winding down for the day, when I don’t have the energy for deep work but can still tackle lighter tasks. You’re already on the right path by taking small, consistent steps. The fact that you're thinking about creating something meaningful and fulfilling for yourself is inspiring. Don’t worry about age-it’s never too late to start! Keep going, and trust the process. You’ve got this! 🙌❤️

Wish i had a friend or mentor like you
Aww, well now we can be virtual friends here on YT at least! ❤️
In a sea of noise, this one is a real/worthwhile video!
Thank you, I'm so glad you resonated with this video! ❤️
So helpful! Thank you for sharing.
Great to hear that! Would love to hear about how you get on once you tried these, it completely changed the way I work forever.
it was really helpful, thank you!

How do we get on the waitlist for office hours? Im about to try incorporating Motion AI to help with the constant feeling of not knowing what to focus on and having too many "open cycles'
Wonderful video thank you!
Thank you! Really glad to hear that. You can add your details here for the waitlist and fill out a super short form: lauriewang.com/office-hours
Yes it’s definitely something that needs to be shared more about the addiction to the digital distractions around us.
Are you a Filipino ? I'm here in Taiwan too working as a caregiver, I used my phone intentionally for learning and improving myself during my spare time
@@judzarintocomak9330 My name’s Villarreal, but I’m not a wealthy Filipino. Bummer!

Hi, Thanks for your tips.
You are most welcome!
I work in an office so sometimes id rather be on here than working because if i dont show im working they will give me more work to do without additional pay.
Thank you Laurie Wang for this video. It's very insightful! You got my subscription!
Awesome, thank you and welcome!
Hi I like your work and Your videos 📸
Thank you so much 😀
Shut down System. Night Sleep is important.
Yep so true, and the best part it's free 😀
I really wish I have someone like you in my life.
Feels like everything is falling apart nowadays.
I'm really sorry to hear that you're feeling this way. It’s tough when life gets overwhelming, and I want you to know that you're not alone in feeling this. I hope that my videos can help to provide some support through those tough times. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help and reach out to others too. Take care of yourself!
i'd like to learn, everything you say resonates. Where do I start? Is this an App or something?
It's a method of working, rather than an app. I shared a lot of ideas here that I learned and applied from Cal Newport's book Deep Work. It's how we structure our time intentionally to focus deep on a specific task that requires concentration. Hi! Love your videos. What camera & lens do you use? Impeccable
Thank you! Glad you like them 🙌❤️ The kit I use is all listed here, including the camera and lens: kit.co/LaurieWang/youtube-beginners-kit
I like where you say we underestimate our potential, but how would it work for a person reaching 60 years of age, what kind of potential, what kind of super power can an older person have whos sick of their job.
I guess 'll never know
If too much work, then quit is better than struggle with those priorities! If it works as u said, the workload is still reasonable n manageable 😂.
Thank you, love this video
You are so welcome! And I’m glad this video was helpful 🙌
Great video!! I might have missed it but… what is the book you reference?
Thanks! 🙌 It's Deep Work by Cal Newport - amzn.to/4clZLaT
i have the same headphones and sometimes I do just wear them even if they're off so people leave me alone 😂
Haha yes, we think alike! 😂 Great for deep working in public places
For me, noise isolating headphones + a white noise app on my phone make concentration in an office setting possible.
Thank You for the insightful content.
Glad it was insightful! 🙌 Which part did you find the most useful?
Just curious, but why does the title say “6 months”? Am I the only one who expected some kind of plan for the next 6 months ? 🤓
Great video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it! 🙌
Transformation is a journey, not a sprint.
Commit to small, consistent changes and watch how six months can reshape your life
Absolutely! Transformation truly is a gradual process, and it’s amazing how small, consistent efforts can lead to lasting change over time. It’s easy to get caught up in wanting quick results, but committing to the journey and embracing the growth along the way is what really makes the difference.
thanks for advice
You're welcome 😊 and glad that you found this advice helpful!
Trick talk is business parties invite company employees either house or ball room only then not nothing personal at regular working hours

Good suggestions. As an ADHDer, the only thing ever worked is Adderall.
Brilliant and Beautiful
Thank you! Glad you found this video helpful 🙌
Very Amazing ❤❤❤❤

What book is this
Deep Work by Cal Newport
It's like I was listening to a female version of myself. Good video
Haha, thanks, great to know that! Fellow parent I assume too 😀🙌
With severe ADHD life is exhausting.
