How does the Poke Ball Plus hold up 6 years later?

  • Back in 2018, the Poke Ball Plus launched alongside Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee for #NintendoSwitch. This monumental controller spawned thousands of copycats and ushered in a new wave of game-specific controllers from every-Wait...no, sorry, that was part of a script from an alternate universe. In this reality, the Poke Ball Plus launched as a neat #Pokemon oddity to capitalize on a new set of games and the massive success of #PokemonGo. It'd be easy to overlook it all this time later. Yet, that'd be a mistake considering how much it elevates its tie-in games.

I’d like to see the controller have some compatibility with the newer games. The controller has compatibility with sword and shield with storing Pokemon in the Pokeball, but I think that Pokemon from other games could be compatible as well. I’ll be doing a video on this possibility this week.

I remembered this existed today and dug it out. I don't play Let's Go too much lately, so I haven't used it as a controller, but I'm loving that the feature of taking a pokemon for a stroll also works in Sword and Shield. I've had so much fun walking around, playing with the pokemon and occasionally hearing it's cry, I'm really glad I remembered its existance.

This is the best innovation and iteration I've ever seen for a Poke Ball. It's a very cool toy, but I really wish it wasn't tied to the pair of specific games.
It's only useful in Pokemon Go if you can't get the Pokemon Go Plus + for whatever reason, and if you actually want to play Pokemon Go.
But as much as I'd like to see more use out of it, even in DIY homebrew. It's tough because it connects via Bluetooth in a proprietary way that only those two sets of games recognize.

Pretty neat concept. Reminds me of back in the day when you could put your Totadile or Murkrow in the PokéWalker and watch the sprites of the Pokémon move around

You can also take Pokémon on a stroll in the Pokéball Plus in Pokémon Sword & Shield.

how does it hold up as an auto-catcher for pokemon go? do you have to to buy a bunch of extra storage? how often does it catch things?

It's been a while since I used with Pokemon Go, but back when I had it connected it performed quite well. Functionally, it's about the same as the Pokemon Go Plus. As long as you have pokeballs in your inventory and space in your storage it'll continuously pick up all pokemon in your proximity one at a time. Each detected pokemon gets a single automated ball toss before the pokemon flees.
As for storage, it's going to be the same as if you went on a catching spree. If you want to catch more pokemon, you need more storage space. You will also be attempting to catch all pokemon you come across instead of ones you'd personally select, so you'd probably need to take a break more often to transfer any pokemon you don't want.

I’m using mine now. It constantly goes off and pretty good at catching pokemon, just make sure you have plenty of pokeballs in game.
Not sure it’s good at getting the pokestops though
