  • the speedo is reading 10mph slow.... I was going about 80 when I let off. Also the rattle is the strait pipe the last owner put on..... needs a real exhaust. It's just a 350, 700R4 with a shift kit, and 3:08 gears. Going with 3:90's come spring, and the 350 isn't staying stock either. Runs OK for 164,000 miles.

    @grungesteve47 LM1/L05 stats from '77 to '93: 77-81: 170 hp/270 lb/ft of torque. 82: 150 hp/270 lb/ft. 83-86: 155 hp/280 lb/ft. 88: 180 hp/285 lb/ft. In '89 they went to TPI and then 3.42 gearing. 190 hp/285 lb/ft. '90: 190 hp/290 lb/ft. '91 with new body: 195 hp/295 lb/ft. '92 with new exhaust 210 hp/300 lb/ft. '93: Downrated to 205 hp/295 lb/ft. '94-96: LT1 260 hp/330 lb/ft. The LM1 lost power in '82 for some reason but gained it back in '83 due to 700r4 trans vs. THM350.

      My 305TBI w 2004R runs better and is more efficient than a 700R4.

    It will sound better with the original dual exhaust installed.

    Was that with a 350TBI or 4barrel carburetor? Those are sweet cars!

    Drop some vortecs, a decent roller cam, decent intake, headers, and a decent exhaust int that.... It WILL RUN with the right chip tuning. I had a stock internal 1983 305 converted to TBI powered G-20 Conversion Van that would beat your 9C1 to 60 and beyond, it had 250K miles on it.

      My 89 Caprice 305TBI 2004-R runs 0-60 in 4.8 seconds did a lot of upgrades to my car. Still doing more.

      My Caprice 89 has 2.79 freeway gear ratio.

      I think the common range was from 3:08 to 3:42; however it would also depend upon how the car was ordered. Fleet service cars could get different ratios available than regular civilian sales, so it 'could' have been possible to get say a 2:79 or even 3:73. Remember that 4.3 V6s were an option in police cars, so the steeper gearing could be there.
      I'd bet 305s would have 3:08 to lengthen their legs, so to say.
      Most I've seen were 3:08 to 3:42, going by the ratio code on the SPID label. Posi was NOT standard, had to be ordered, & is identified by G80 on the SPID label.

      My Caprice 9c1 has a 305TBI w 2004-R. Better transmission than the 700R-4. Faster shifting 1st to 3rd gear.
