- A playthrough of Hudson's 1988 action-adventure game for the NES, Milon's Secret Castle.
In this video, I played through both loops of the game in order to show the "true" ending. The second "quest" begins at 42:54.
Milon's Secret Castle was released in North America alongside Adventure Island ( • Hudson’s Adventure Isl... ) in the fall of 1988, and it was one of Hudson's first internationally self-published NES games.
Milon, who had previously appeared as a bonus point item in Star Force, lives in the kingdom of Hudson, a land where everyone communicates through music. Unfortunately, the poor guy suffers from some form of musical mutism, so he decides it's time to move on to greener (atonal) pastures. He heads to the castle to inform the queen, but when he arrives, he sees that the place has been overrun by demons that have stolen everybody's instruments. Seemingly oblivious to the irony of the situation, Milon takes it upon himself to expel the demons, reclaim the instruments, and save the queen.
Armed with magical bubbles, Milon has to fight his way through the castle's four floors, each home to a set of labyrinth-like rooms that have to be searched for shops, life upgrades, and special items that'll open the path forward.
It's one of those NES titles that's known for its ability to divide the modern audience. Some people, myself included, regard it as a classic, while others would sooner set themselves on fire than touch it with a ten-foot pole.
I think that probably stems from how old-school it is, even by NES standards. The game was two years old when it showed up on this side of the Pacific, and game design had evolved by leaps and bounds in that short period. Super Mario Bros. 3 came out in Japan just a month after Milon debuted stateside.
Milon's Secret Castle hails from the same period as Kid Icarus and Metroid, and it has a lot in common with those games: it's a semi-linear, genre-bending action game that encourages and rewards exploration and experimentation. It's unapologetically obtuse and the difficulty curve is vicious, but it is also an incredibly satisfying game to see through to the end. It takes a dedicated effort to come to grips with the game's flow and logic, but once everything clicks into place and the theme song has wormed its way into your head, it's all too easy to sink hours at a time into it.
I spent many, many hours as a kid playing this one, and I enjoyed how hard it made me work for the ending. The castle layout and the NPC chatter will nudge you in the right direction, but the game expects you to figure most of it out on your own. It's not going to be a good fit for the impatient, but if you're a fan of games like Metroid, Mystery Quest, or Castlequest, then you'll probably enjoy the challenge this one poses.

Milon’s Secret Castle. It’s a humble game. I mean, it’s not Mega Man, or Mario, or Michael Jackson, it’s just Milon.
Do you think he's related to the earth fiend that lives on Mt. Ordeals?
@@NintendoComplete the Game Boy version has nicer looking sprites for the bosses for some reason.
I think the reason James Rolfe aka the AVGN was so angry at the game is because of all its cryptic puzzles. If this game was just a simple platformer like Super Mario Brothers or Adventure Island where you go through each stage and beating the boss and saving the damsel at the end, James would not have hated this game so much.
@@robbiewalker2831Yeah it's a much nicer looking game overall. Makes sense since it came out six years later.
AVGN throw me here too
Milon's Secret Castle is not a game for the impatient or the easily frustrated, but if you like a challenge, there's a whole lot of prime Nintendo-hard gaming goodness to sink your teeth into here.
Do you read that,AVGN?
Not for the impatient, you say? Well, that’s a shame because I was actually kind of curious about this game since it’s by Hudson. I tend to get frustrated and impatient with unfair difficulty, so this may not be the best fit for me.
@@kevinmurphy6679 there are no problems at all to play it with this walkthrough for example, just don't drop a game experience because it's hard to figure out what to do.
@@kevinmurphy6679 I wouldn't call it unfair. It's just demanding.
NGL I wouldn't mind a remake of Milon's Secret Castle; a fixed version.
This is definitely one of the hardest NES games.
"You can jump, jump, jump till the cows come home!"
2:05 Arrow shape pointing to hidden door. Lol Thank you Milon Developers
This game is actually pretty good once you stick with it and realise that many games from this era were also cryptic - some even more-so than this, like Metroid. In my opinion this game is a hidden gem that doesn’t deserve the hate it gets
The Nerd: And so am I, because it killed more brain cells than I could possibly imagine. The whole game is based on secrets. But there's a difference between secret and just FUCKIN' IMPOSSIBLE! FUCK THIS GAME! (The Nerd throws the box to his left side, and the box explodes.)
I always liked this game. It reminds me a bit of Wonder Boy in Monster Land.
Yeah, it does have a similar open-ended sorta feel.
If only I knew what that damned single block could do sooner; because the manual forgot one important detail that would've helped me.
Despite my quoting the AVGN, I actually like this game. Yeah, it’s very frustrating, yeah, you need a map, but if you have a map, and know where to go, it can be pretty enjoyable. Cute Hudson graphics, too.
Fun fact, Mike Matei, the writer of that AVGN episode, actually likes the game too, so yeah, you're not alone
@@solarflare9078Really Mike Matei actually likes Milon’s Secret Castle I didn’t know that?
11:50 “The vest helps you _in the fire room_ , those were my exact words. I never said that it would be 100% against _all_ heat, and it isn’t my responsibility if you got the wrong impression. No refunds.”
" I'll take it if it helps haha"
FIND A SAW!!
This was one of my favorate games bacck in 87
This game gives me peace.
Ive played this game and it seems to be a bit more enjoyable the further you go
All the trial and error puzzles you could ever want! And then some.
Forgot to mention that this game was two years old when it was released in the U.S. Not to mention Hudson got rid of this sound engine that was used on a handful of their games from 1986 to 1987.
This game is so ahead of it's time, looking closely you can see a brutal influence on so many games year after year.
That approach of gameplay is so intuitive,it's video game at it's finest, which means you need to feel the game while you're playing it.
Those MASTERPIECES are for the few passionate enthusiasts out there, not for the regular players.
A game so cryptic Nintendo Power showed off how to begin the game in their cheat section, That's not a cheat, that's just how to play the game
Glorious video.
Thanks!
You're welcome
It's just an adventure game where you're trying to rescue a princess. Basic stuff.
BUMP HEAD TO FIND BOX
This is a fine game, but its obscure sequel is so much better in my opinion and it's also a great game in general!
I don't know this NES game , I just played Mario, Metroid, Bases Loaded Series, Godzilla, Double Dragon, Robocop , Batman , and The Legend Of Zelda when I very young back in 1990 , I was 5
Nice way to stock up on at 25:18
Wow forgot about that gem
I SUCK at these games! I can play Zelda 2 Adventure of link but not the first Zelda. Too complex. Alex dude, you are the Game Master! It's a real pleasure to watch you play these games! 😁❤
Thanks! :) Ooh Zelda 2 was great.
@NintendoComplete Yeah, and I watched you play through to show me how to do it after 30 years having passed since I played last! 😂😂😂😂
This was a game my mother would spend all day on the weekends trying to beat... also, there's a second quest?
The _real_ second quest is shutting the game off and disposing it in any way that you choose.
Yeah, it's pretty brutal. The bosses take so much more off of your life and everything moves faster.
Несмотря на милое начало игры, это по-настоящему адский игровой проект. Без заучивания каждого пикселя делать тут просто нечего.
Dude, I've watched some of your playthroughs, and this is the one game I didn't wanna watch lmao!
I wonder how you actually beat this damn game, lol let's find out!!
Hahaha I actually really love this game.
Wow...there's alot of stuff hidden everywhere...how were we as kids suppose to know about moving the block until it actually moves??
@@shoyu_hashira9390 Iirc, the first time the game requires you to push one, one of the shopkeepers tells you how to do it
*James Rolfe* is typing...
EPISODE 1????
I felt a sense of accomplishment beating this game. That was a let down ending, only worse one was ghost & goblins
1:09:24之後好像還少一個音樂福利關卡?🤔
(Google 翻譯 Google Translate)
1:09:24It seems that there is still one less music welfare level after that?🤔
Yeah, I collected all of them in the first game, but not in the second.

Wow! You actually replied to me!😂
@@Maki_Kirishima Hahaha 👋
Try as I might, I just can't get any enjoyment out of this game. It's simply too frustrating for all the wrong reasons. I think you're better off playing the *VASTLY* superior sequel for Super Famicom.
But hey, if *_you_* like it, more power to you.
This game is a chore.
Milon's secret castle? More like Milon's secret arshole -James rolfe
I see you everywhere! 🗣
It’s no thanks to what The Angry Video Game Nerd said, I can never ever play this game...
Wrote it off as shit and I can’t ever play it thanks to what he said! Hey, that’s what game reviewing has come down to!
Guilt by association and hyperbole.
“I fucking hate this game!” - Angry Video Game Nerd
Mario nights snes the game cancelled the protoytype the lost media
I never liked this game. It feels like it was coded by someone with severe ADHD.
I have ADHD and I playing this game as a child was very relaxing
Such a bad game. It could have been decent.
