  • A playthrough of Ultra's 1990 NES game, Mission: Impossible.
Mission: Impossible for the NES seems to be somewhat ironically named - unless you take the considerable amount of time needed to master it, it really is virtually impossible to play it well, but it can indeed be finished. Even once you have mastered it, you still have to be extremely careful, since one wrong move can wipe out a party member, and if you needed that person to get through an area... well, the reset button invites your attention.
I did get a game over once - I ate it on the skiing level, and since you only get one life, I had to continue. Thank God it only put me back at the beginning of the stage. Unlimited continues are about the only grace the game ever allows you.
It really brings back memories of Metal Gear and the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games. It's fairly nonlinear, so you have to really get to know the areas, and there's often a balance you have to strike between risk and reward. If Grant can only take one more hit, do you go to another building, risking someone else to find him a health pack, or do you continue on, hoping that you can limp by with the others? It's extremely difficult (this one had me throwing controllers as a kid), but the satisfaction of beating it finally is worth it in the end. That, and there's some great Engrish at play. It all makes sense, but some of this dialogue sounds ridiculous.
It rocks Konami's trademark visual and music styles (both very good things) and there's a good amount of depth to the action. If you're over 30, though, make sure you have antacids in the cupboard before you begin ;)
Someone requested this a while back. I don't remember it was, but if it was you, here you go!

Mission: Impossible feels a lot like Metal Gear with the challenge of the original Ninja Turtles shot directly into it. Tough as nails, and it's a really good game. And check out that awesome rendition of the MI title theme!

Not to mention Enter the Dragon, Money Talks, FX2 - The Deadly Art of Illusion, Battle Creek Brawl (aka The Big Brawl), and numerous others.
And as far as the character lineup order in the intro, derived from the short-lived late '80s revival of the show, long before the Tom Cruise film series based on it (with the most recent being Fallout, which I saw an advance screening of last year prior to its official release):
Max Harte (the late Tony Hamilton) / Shannon Reed (Jane Badler) / Grant Collier (Phil Morris) / Nicholas Black (Thaao Penghlis) and finally their IMF leader Jim Phelps (the also-late Peter Graves). Of course you play as any one of the 3 aforementioned characters, except for Reed & Phelps...but I honorably digress.

Quite the nailbiter for a final segment. I imagine I'm my adult age when this was released, and I can use my imagination to let this really feel like I'm in a tense movie scene. The counter dips below 200, the lights and music become tense. Really stood out from a typical choreographed-strategy final foe.

One of my NES favorites. I loved the mechanic of each character having their use throughout a level, though that is also the primary reason why the game was so difficult. Once one character dies, you probably need to restart the level because you'll get locked out of progressing at some point.
I also really liked the jumping in the Stage 2. Not completely sure why it's even a thing, but it feels really good. I think it was meant for a way to attack the helicopters, but for some reason they cut it.

His Secretary !But Shannon is an Agent !This game had a style, each Agent had his own style Max, slow walking because of heavy arsenal weaponry.
Grant, fastest walking, Hi tech expert, uses fists and throws bomb gas
And Nicholas, Aussie Guy boomerangs throws and disguises except those disguise don't last long !Well Each Agent also depends on some hard situation, whoever, Max in some, Grant in most and Nicholas in others, as a Master of disguise, he cant be recognized and boomerangs throws are also specific weapon throw and comes back to him !Max, bombs for Ennemies with shields or monsters with claws when you're taken !
And ennemies are always the same Ones in each level !well it was NES and 1990 period but what we have to be proud is that it was the first MI first video game and best MI revival ever !

    • @theearthmovesagain
      @theearthmovesagain 3 года назад

In the original instruction manual for this game, they cite Max's slowness due to the fact that for this mission he was assigned to wear heavy body armor which greatly slowed him down. Being that he was the brawn of the team in the show and the fighter, it seemed ridiculous that he would have to now, or that the fact that he took the same damage just as easily as Grant and Nicholas does makes no sense. I suppose that the developers had an idea that the character with the gun should be handicapped meaning that you had to rely on everyone equally, not just your shooting character for everything. And as for Shannon, well, she was always undercover or in the midst of the counterintelligence action and subsequently always ending up needing help and rescue from the team. The game did that one right, I suppose. I always thought it logical that she should have become a playable character once you rescued her, but just like the television series, the game thinks little of her too.

I had always thought that it would have been so cool that during the intro with the Mission: Impossible theme that the game would have shown you actual game scenes from throughout alongside the characters' IMF cards. Then it would have truly been just like the original television series which showed scenes from the upcoming night's episode (the second series that this game was based on showed random episode segments instead). That would have been awesome in my opinion, but I probably would have been asking too much of the Nintendo technology at this point. Still, this was one Hell of a game, though, that I never gave up on despite its immense difficulty even thirty-plus years on.

The only turn-off I have towards the graphics is that I dislike the overhead view used in this game, and the form the enemies take when killed looks...weird. I think it would have better if it was more like that seen in Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, and Snake's Revenge. Anyway, good playthrough. Also, did Konami blatantly steal that floppy disk design from the NES version of Strider!?

By the time the second season premiered, Hill was fired due to his poor performance (he would later resurface 23 years later as one of the cast members on Law & Order) and in came Peter Graves, who would go on to become synonymous with Mission: Impossible as Jim Phelps.

It was a good game however, with the sequel Impossible Mission 2 getting ported to the NES (with better graphics).

I purposely kill myself in game just see my dude fly off screen and hear that muffled "UGH!" So manyh LULZ. Could never get far in the game. Recently picked it up with the manual. Maybe I'll get the courage to punish myself for NES hard. BTW I finally beat Rush N Attack two weeks ago! replayed it 4 times to memorize but was quite worth it.

+TheDemoniusX Oh congrats! I remember you saying you were having a hard time with getting through it. That's a super satisfying one to tackle. Ahaha I loved the death grunts! My favorite was to have one killed by the old lady on the first street. After seeing that and hearing the grunt: lollercaust.

What an amazing game, even though I've never played it before. It's a cross hybrid of Wargames and James Bond, with Batman-esque songs and Contra-like sound effects.
