- A playthrough of LJN's 1989 license based action-platformer for the NES, Friday the 13th.
Friday the 13th isn't a day that often falls in October, so I thought I'd celebrate with a look back at one of NES library's most notorious games.
Appearing on shelves a few months before the theatrical release of Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, this Atlus-developed NES adaptation of the franchise was clearly meant to capitalize on the hype surrounding cinema's most celebrated serial killer of the 1980s.
This rendition of Friday the 13th takes most of its cues from the second film in the series. Jason Vorhees is determined to avenge the death of his mother, and he has the hapless campers and counselors at Camp Crystal Lake firmly in his sights.
You take control of six controllable counselors, each with his/her own strengths and weaknesses, and over the course of three days, it's your job to protect the fifteen kids staying at the camp while arming yourself for the inevitable showdown with Jason himself.
Jason regularly patrols the camp, and when he comes across an occupied cabin, the alarm sounds. That's your cue to rush in and fight him off before he can make mincemeat of his target. If all of the counselors or all of the campers die, it's game over.
Between attacks, you'll be running around scouring the camp for hints and weapons. You kill zombies as you follow the paths that wind around the camp as well as explore the interior areas from an over-the-shoulder 3D perspective, and you'd best stay on your toes. Jason can ambush you anywhere, any time.
A big hint: if you really want to gain the upper hand, find the altar where Jason keeps his mother's severed head and steal the sweater! It will halve the damage taken by the counselor wearing it.
Friday the 13th has been savaged by both critics and the gaming public in the years since its release, and while game has its share of faults - the gameplay loop is repetitive, the mechanics are difficult to figure out without the manual, the controls are loose, and the outdoor music's endless four-second music loop is grating - it's not a total write-off. The creative ways in which it draws inspiration from the film's setting and the non-linear structure of the gameplay suit the theme well and help to build tension, and the number of secrets to be uncovered gives it a fair amount of replayability.
As a kid, I couldn't figure it out and usually wound up bored and frustrated after a few minutes, but as an adult armed with patience and an instruction manual, I have fun with it. It's not great, but it is interesting to see such a novel approach to adapting a horror movie, and to see how it takes tentative steps toward establishing concepts that would later become defining elements of the survival horror genre.
Happy Friday the 13th!

Happy Friday the 13th everyone!
Same to you buddy guy!!
I called it Jason day.
Same here pal.

I first beat this game, in an inflatable chair, while waiting to go to see Blair Witch in 1999....truly one of my favorite gaming memories, I legitimately love this game.
That is awesome, I used to play this at night , I used to jump when Jason would appear. this game is one of my favorites.
@@beatsinmycrates Hahaha same! Back on 1999. I would turn down the volume and listen to Classic Rock so the audio cue wouldn't spook me.
Props to the composer because for an NES chiptune the cabin music is STILL unsettling all these years later
Its a lot like De ja vu
@@senseicorey9979 yes!! That’s a great game with a great soundtrack
I love the Cabin theme. Maybe not as unsettling but It kind of reminds me of Prayer from Megami Tensei 1, which has the same composer.
This is legitimately the best thing LJN ever published.
A nightmare on elm street its good too
And spiderman-maximum carnage on the snes.
Well, Atlus helped with the development of the game, so now you know why.
@@olimac82 That would explain it!
That's a low bar LOL
I used to play the crap out of this when I was maybe 5 or 6. I didn't get anywhere.😅. Holy nostalgia
This game scared me more than any other NES game as a kid.
Yea same 😭💔
It really did!!!
When Jason Appears as Your Exiting a House...😬
Check out 20:40 - that Jason appearance always scared the hell out of me.
Same
That music I think was the damn scariest, especially when Jason showed up.
The thing that made me laugh so much about this game is when you encounter Jason outside and you kick his ass and he just runs away 😂😂😂
That game had me turning on all the lights in the house when I was younger playing Friday the 13th
Turning a corner when your in a cabin and finding Jason always scared the crap out of me when i was a kid.
Like Jekyll and Hyde, Friday the 13th ain't great, but it goes to great creative lengths to stay true to its source material.
Well, except for the fact that Jason is wearing purple overalls and a blue mask, but that was still kinda cool.
The wild west of video games, when they got more sophisticated than the single screen arcade affair of the Atari and nobody knew what the hell they were doing yet. It was a magical time!
Great play through Alex. You make the game look easy (it’s not!). It’s ironic how some of the LJN NES games are actually ones we appreciate more (or dislike less) as adults; you’d think it would be the opposite. I remember this game always being the cheapest game at Toys R Us back in the day. For me, the extremely creepy atmosphere of this game and the items/secrets make it a decent game. Also, it reminds me a bit of Goonies II, which is a game I’ve always liked. Who knew we’d appreciate LJN when we hit middle age! I guess it helps that Atlus developed it.
p.s. I agree that 33:22 is a really cool moment in the game (finding the sweater). I always thought the sweater sprite was really cool and how you flash after getting it. It’s a nice touch.
@rjcupid Thanks! I remember seeing it on clearance too, haha. The 3D rooms reminded me of Goonies as well. Even the music is sorta similar. I wonder if it was a direct influence here.
I know Jason couldn't be the only enemy in this game, but it looks like the zombie apocalypse is going on at the same time! Those hapless counselors have bigger problems than Jason Vorhees right now!
Joking aside, the game is pretty fun once you get the hang of how the map works, and the sound it plays when Jason appears does make you jump sometimes.
This game is considered by some to be an early example of a survival horror game and when you think about it in that context, the game makes way more sense.
Exactly! It is an 8-bit survival horror game.
Maybe not the best licensed game ever but it's quite unique and fun once you know how it operates.
This and Elm street
Fun fact:
I even went to Cineworld to watch the original Friday The 13th (1980) on Friday the 13th of October 2023 too.
I enjoyed the fact they brought back the purple suit Jason for the online Friday the 13th game a few years ago!
My two gripes with this game is how fast you have to be to prevent the campers from dying and how repetitive the Jason fights can be.
But dang if that interior music isn’t a great tune. It makes feel like a holy force thinking about my situation as I slowly trek forward.
I watched the AVGN "Friday the 13th" episode so many times that this video now serves as ASMR for me.
An amazing, and very misunderstood game. If they had bothered to explain how the game worked I feel like it would have been received a lot better!
😀
yeah we didn't have no internets back then
@@dundundata7603 It’s a shame too, something that could have explained what was really going on and how the game works could have moved it into the top 10 NES games instead of bottom 10 ever!
Explain how it works
@@Greencloud8 Is there something particular that you’re wondering about? That’s probably a better place to start than trying to cover everything
I watch the AVGN episode of this game every Friday the 13th, including today.
I like how this game shares DNA with the Shin Megami Tensei series with the cabin sequences.
Forget resident evil. This is the original jump scare game
On my way to the original camp crystal lake on Friday the 13th.
Music gets me still til this day😂
I was about 8years old when I played and finished the game . One thing that scared the 💩 out of me was having watched the movie then plying this game alone at home at night lights off , every time Jason would suddenly pop out , It would be a jump scare !
F you Jason !
It haunted me throughout the years .
After all these years this game is memorable and still shines, a classic.
How fitting to play this today!
I saw all the FRIDAY THE 13TH movies
and also played the computer game on
my Commodore 64.
The NES game looks cool 😺👍🕹️.
Happy Friday the 13th from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮.
I was a fan of the C64 game. A friend had it, and we used to play just to hear the screams.
This will always be one of my favorite games
Playing this as a kid at night with no lights on When Jason popped out at 1:53 I instantly cut the Nintendo off 😂
Happy Friday the 13th
This is my favorite game of all time🤟
That music brings me back 35 years
There's actually a tie in to another film universe - the Evil Dead franchise - that was confirmed by director Sam Raimi. In Jason Goes To Hell, the Voorhees family home is being searched and in one room, we see a copy of the Necronomicon. Pamela Voorhees had read from the book to bring her dead son back to life - and we all know what that means.
... that we may one day get a sequel of Ash chainsawing through Jason's head before blowing him away with an S-Mart shotgun?
Shit, yeah. You're relentless, in a great way.
The cabin music is so haunting
My aunt got me this for a bday...game did scare me as a kid cause Jason would pop outta nowhere. Did beat it with game genie codes tho.
Do you have any intention on starting a gaming channel or not?
@@jayskicksnfits9372no? Was I supposed to?
@@thecunninlynguistI was asking out of curiosity because I always see you here and everywhere else.
To answer your question, I don't think so.
By the way, I found your page on Twitch. ✌🏻
@@jayskicksnfits9372 haha i see. I'm just a fellow gamer
HAPPY Friday the 13th
I remember never being able to complete this game. Due solely to a mis-read of the instruction manual, itself.
Touting the pitchfork as 'the one weapon' which could ' really harm' Jason, I took for granted such was, literally, the only way to kill Jason. But I never found the weapon, so never tried - believing he would resurrect indefinitely if attacked by anything else.
The expected results ensued.
Jason zooming through the water like a speedboat will never not be funny to me lol.
That cheap shot Jason gets as he swims past you in the lake always pissed me off.
You were just too good for Jason. You didn't leave him any kills. I guess you're the reason why I'll be settling for Subway. Good Friday the 13th btw.
What perfect day.
Hacked my console accidentally by inserting cartridge and pressing down but not locking cartridge in place. Game powered up and I noticed I had all items and weapons, beat Jason with pitchfork in first few minutes.
Had to hold cartridge down with toothpick against console lid. NES. Loved those days.😂😂
Happy Friday The 13th! I just watched the movie today. Hopefully this’ll cure what ails me.
Sh...
Guess im watching this with the lights _on_
Doing Friday the 13th on Friday the 13th, cool!😮
I hated this one back in the day. But, as time has gone by and I know more about how it works now, I'm more amenable to it. It ain't great by any means, but it can be fun once you know what you're doing.
its nice seeing a playthrough with both mark and crissy being used and not just mark. i would like to see a play with all 6 characters being used and given the most powerful stuff they can possibly get.
When he pops out of nowhere hell yeah
The music always creeped me out the most.
I'm about to play this game right now
I was just playing this earlier.
Soundtrack ♥️
Gameplay 😁
Difficulty😱
I always love commitment to the bit 👍
I'd quote the AVGN about this one, but I actually like it. It's not that hard to figure out if you pay attention, check the map to see which direction you're going, and realize killing zombies = better weapons. I do agree with the funky colors they made Jason; _why_ did they choose purple?
Without a doubt, LJN released games for the NES that other companies ignored (Karate Kid, Elm Street, Friday the 13, Jaws, Back to the future, T2)
lol "WE'RE NOT TELLING!!"
Oh! Well, now it all makes perfect sense.
Lol @ the cosby shirt bestowing added protection vs jasons machete😂
Happy Friday the 13th!💀
I remember finally completing this game and seeing this lackluster of an ending. Come on! Don't hold out on me like that!
Spooky game on spooky month of a spooky day
Had a feeling you'd upload this lol.
I have never played this game nor have I seen any of the Friday the 13th movies. I just know it from both the AVGN and Game Grumps.
I appreciate the *_attempt_* at making a non-linear game, but they did everything wrong. Also, a few more songs would've helped break the monotony.
Happy Friday the 13th, and Happy Birthday to the US Navy. 248 years protecting the seas.
Aww my cousin still jealous that i was the only one of us to beat this game 👍🏽
Haven't seen this one in a while 😮😮😊😊
At least it’s not Friday the 17th.
I'm about to play it now...
Excellent 😀👍🏻🕹🎮 🎉🎉
You lost 1 children I'm sorry you'll have to do it again (But seriously though this is the best technical playthrough ive seen)
Thanks!
Glorious video.
Ahh
I see we had a similar idea today.
HAPPY SPOOK DAY!
I once encountered Jason in one of those big cabins. I thought he only appeared in the councelors cabins. It was scary :S
I kinda feel bad about myself that I can't beat the game, because of how difficult it was and how random the map was even I get lost jn the forest that easily, and I can't beat Jason unless if I get the Torch, Machete, Axe, and Pitchfork.
I personally prefer the Nightmare on Elm Street NES game, which is probably the best game to hold the LJN logo. Hope you will cover that before the spooky season is over.
Yeah, Nightmare on Elm Street for NES wasn't too bad. Not *_great,_* but it's better than this garbage lol.
I'd say that's a pretty safe bet ;) I liked that one too.
Happy Friday the 13th!
This is not a game that you want to play late at night by yourself. But it was still fun.
There are some flaws with this game. First off, why do they have slower-moving characters and fast-moving ones at the same time? Secondly, this game has the same issue as TMNT for the NES. That being that you could have a tendency to pick up a weapon you don't want.
Another issue they share is that they both suck horribly.
Faster and slower characters, because the counselors had stats, which affects their walking speed, boat rowing speed, weapon throwing speed/arch (I think), also only 2 can jump high.
@AverageGamerStoner even as a kid I knew it was obvious they did it to make them all different....even if most would pick mark/chrissy cause they the fastest
@@thecunninlynguist I always picked Mark or Chrissy.
@@VahanNisanianPretty much everyone else sucks.
This is one of those few game where I didn't care how much it sucked, because I loved it anyway.
It’s funny how they named the game Friday the 13th the actual day.
Happy Friday people
My first game on NES, I truly hated it, scared me to death every time Jason jumped out.
Fire will damage, Jason the most
This is a great game
I was scrolling through your videos and not sure if you did a play through of the Simpsons barts nightmare and Urban champion.
31:52- scared the pisss out of me LOL
Truly i scary game when i played it wow the good ol days
This game used to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid
I will admit, I couldn't get into this one, but it's also not as bad as many think in my opinion. It can be pretty tense at times, what with Jason appearing out of nowhere and being much more powerful than you at any time. Still, when it comes to masked (anti)heroes with a hatchet/machette, I think I like Splatterhouse Wanpakku Graffiti better!
Cool...
Now you just got to do that two more times and you truly beaten the game.
Pamela vorhees head is the boss n°2!
Imagine a remake of this game kind of like Resident Evil 4 and Until Dawn!
And now, an art guide on how to draw Jason's hands.
E' '3
But if he's holding a weapon...
C' '3
You're welcome.
NICE
What happens if you lose the pitchfork? Did they set any kind of condition for if that happened or is it game over if that character dies because there's just that one time to get it.
This game was creepy
This game really scared when i was a kid
Never knew Friday the 13th was a game.
Before the online game there was this
