Now Kirby's Dreamland 3 I have to disagree. Because for one it was late in the life cycle and the last first party game they did. It flew under the radar, the game did what it set out to do, look like a coloring book. The graphics are better than you stated, they had to use a different technique to implement that water color look. A lot of people love this game. Tell the Japanese it's overrated 😂. We can agree to disagree I agree with most of your content. Not Kirby 3 though it just didn't click with you.
the hype for donkey kong country is well deserved. sure the other parts of the series where better in some regards but usualy when people praise donkey kong country the mean the whole trilogy on the snes anyway. I personaly still like the original first part the most because its so iconic and has this nice basic story of the bad crocodile king stealing donkey kongs bananas and you go to the top of the mountain to defeat him on his pirate ship. its a perfect classic video game plot. the bosses especialy the first 3 are simple af but its all so well executed and not overdone... the controls, the music and the graphics still hold up today you can still play this and it still feels good even compared with modern jump&runs. f-zero and mario kart also still hold up. they still look good and they are still fun to play. top gear on the other hand just like road rash, pole position and other racing games in the same style where you dont actualy have a real racetrack but it feels like you are fixed on some kind of endless scroll or something.... sorry man thats just outdated trash. people maybe have nostalgic memories for it but racing games at the time needed the mode 7 rotational map to come alive. before that it really was the dark ages for racing games. it was useless, it played like ass and the games dont hold up today not even rad racer, super hang on or outrun. I would show them to a young kid to show them what old games were like but I wouldn't expect anybody to have fun with this stuff today.
Liked just for Final Fantasy V. That game is so so good and my personal favorite Final Fantasy, it really doesn't get talked about enough/receive the praise it deserves
Captain Astronaut I would say that FFV is not talked about or “underhyped,” due to the strange localization process with Final Fantasy games. There are still people who call Final Fantasy 6, #3 because that’s how it was released here. So V not being released in the US hurt it quite a bit I think. It’s still one of the franchise I’ve never really played but really want to... just gotta make time.
Honestly FFV is my favorite as well. FFV is just complained about because well FF fans like kinda dark and edgy melodramatic stories like VII. And FFV was very whimsical and light.
I liked playing ffv. But repeated playthroughs and no completion with that game just left me feeling hollow about it. I certainly like the gameplay, and the characters of the game. I've just played it so much that it just disinterested me. I would still put V as a really great game. But i'll come around to it some other time
As many other ff games i totally loved V as well. The music kicked ass and the job system made grinding a lot less tedious. Another thing i liked was it was a difficult final fantasy. You couldn’t just breeze right through it without a little training. The story wasn’t great but who cares?
Here in Brazil, Top Gear is a total classic, the majority of the people considers Top Gear superior to Super Mario Kart and F-Zero, for example in a poll in a brazilian channel (Velberan) to the best racing game and Top Gear win both games in the list. There is even a espiritual sucessor made by Brazilians with the same composer and even a remix of the theme of the game.
It's a little funny... I live in Brazil too, and I find it so strange when Snesdrunk says Top Gear is underhyped. In my opinion, Top Gear is seriously overhyped here in Brazil. Everybody loses their shit when talking about Top Gear but I never found it to be so amazing of a racing game. I prefer f-zero much more.
Was the SNES a popular system in Brazil? I know that Mega Drive and Master System reigned supreme there, but was Nintendo popular there too? I'd love to know!
I had heard great things about it and my friend had the cartridge in their collection so I gave it a try. Its been a few years but I just couldn't get into it. I am sure things would have been different if I had played it as a kid, as I would squeeze any and all redeeming characteristics out of a game if I rented it or owned it when I was young and bored. But as an adult playing it for the first time I found it had a few cool features, but the gameplay itself wasn't something I could get into.
music was better. levels had better flow. areas were unique yet made sense for the island. enemy design fit the level/world and didn't look like they were made of clay.
Dude, it is not that you should get hate for dropping rating on games that are good according to users, but starting comments like "I would avpid games like Demon's Crest, it is not worth playing...", seriously? Game is far from being a master piece, but graphics design and music are awesome... It is worth to play
Just the opening scene is worth playing it for to be honest. Its worth a longer play than that though. The graphics and design are awesome. So is the soundtrack. Its part of the Ghosts 'n Goblins series. That alone makes it worth at least a play through.
In my experience, the Famicom Phantasia is so unknown to the western world I was surprised to even see it mentioned here, especially as an overhyped one, since people rarely know what I talk about when I mention it to them. For me, it's one of the finest RPGs of its era with a better take on the technology-took-us-back-to-medieval-times-theme than both Secret of Mana an Chrono Trigger (even though these are damn fine games as well), and to how they managed to get such character development from just text and no voice acting as they did in Phantasia is just beyond me! For me, it's everything but overhyped :)
people overhype it thanks to the "Arche fucks like a tiger" meme. Phantasia SNES is probably the worst version. Yes, worse than the GBA version. tbh if you want an ARPG on the SNES, stick with Illusion of Gaia or Terranigma. they're far better. Hell even SO1 is better, though I recommend First Departure R for that.
@@GiordanDiodatoI'm actually quite liking Phantasia. The visuals and music are enough for me to paper over some shortcomings and the combat feels satesfying and relatively intuitive once you get the hang of it, and I didn't enjoy either of these things as much in the couple of hours or so I put into the PS version. Although the random encounter rate is indeed atrocious
I love Final Fantasy V and recently bought a repro cart for my SNES to replace my no-longer functional PSX copy. No load times and better sounding music make it so much better.
final fantasy 5 ancient cave hack is a must try. It makes the game infinitely better. Main prob with it is it takes too long to learn skills (dualcast for example 999 ap fughedaboutit), and some classes were useful, but to have a roguelike where you randomly get jobs that are much better than nothing (even blue mage and slow berserker are useful), it makes the game far more fun to play.
GBA version IS the definitive version (let's see how the Pixel Remaster will be). Yeah, yeah, yeah. Horrible audio. If you haven't figured it out, there's a sound restoration patch, too.
Disagree on Demon's Crest. You make it sound like a bad thing that there are secrets and passageways to discover with other gargoyles. If anything it gives the game replay value. And the levels are too short and straight forward to 'not know were the hell to go'. But then again, I played it longer than 15 mins. It is actually an underrated game. Like Actraiser. The worst thing about Demon's Crest is that it is very short.
Over hyped: 1. Demons Crest 2. Kirby's Dreamland 3 3. Mega Man X3 4. Donkey Kong Country 5. Tales of Phantasia Under Hyped 1. Sparkster 2. Legend of the Mystical Ninja 3. King of Dragons 4. Top Gear 5. Final Fantasy V
I very much disagree with you on Demon's Crest. While I could definitely do without the demonic theme, the game is absolutely fantastic. It's kind of like Metroid, but they took that idea and did there own thing with it. It's a pretty unique game. I would never call Donkey Kong Country over-hyped. It wasn't over-hyped when it was released, and it holds up extremely well to this day. Complaining about it by saying that the sequels did certain things better is just silly. That's what a sequel is suppose to do! Yeah, the sequels are better games, and that's how it should be.
+JFMSpike yeah, never played it because of the demons, it would have been more popular with a different name and calling the character a gargoyle, which I think he was anyways?
Wasn't expecting Demons Crest on the overhyped list. This was a game I was very fond of, and not alot of people were talking about it in my school. I thought it was a hidden gem
I considered Demon's Crest under hyped, but that's because back in the day, I hadn't heard much about it. I picked it up at the store in the 90s without almost any knowledge about it. I played through it several times, and was blown away by everything (the sound, the visuals, the controls, and the whole presentation) my first play through.
played donkey kong country recently with my gf, she is 23, so she never played it before. While yes, finding all the bonus barrels is a pain in the ass, I think it still holds up. Great gameplay, controls, great level design, fair but serious challenge, just overall very round. We had lots of fun.
I remember when Bubsy The Bobcat was getting previewed in IGN and Gamepro... Nothing but glowing previews saying this game was incredible and that Bubsy was the next big thing. This was back in 1992 when I was a 16 year old with a part time job. I bought the game at launch before the actual reviews came out, most were positive, but I still remember this game even today as one of the biggest disappointments (or over hyped games) I ever paid for. Maybe do a video on some of your worst SNES purchases?
+SNES drunk SimEarth was notable in that it's one of the few games that carried a warning of sorts in Nintendo Power. It was diplomatically put, but NP basically called it boring. I got a mere handful of hours out of SimEarth. One of the worst gaming experiences of my life.
I disagree on Demon's Crest. The whole point is to go through the levels and explore to find all of the alternate paths and items, which leads to the true ending. I kind of think you didn't play it the way it was intended to be played. To anyone interested in the game for any reason please give it a chance.
Kirby's Dreamland 3 is amazing for the amount of combinations between the companions and the powers, I've yet to see a game with so many combinations. Plus, the art style is amazing.
I always thought it was the most re-playable of the Kirby games from that era. SNESdrunk calls it "Slow" but I feel like you have a lot more control with your movement in that game, the other games were the ones that feel slow.
Yeah completely disagree with SNESdrunk, I felt like the “slow” gameplay made me enjoy the game much more and I was able to enjoy all the levels throughly. also, l loved each puzzle to get the heart stars and it’s actually pretty smart. Also, the boss fights are pretty challenging and the art is so cute! There’s a reason why it’s my favorite Kirby game and I was born in 2004 :3, I literally found this game on RUclips on thanksgiving and it changed my life, and plus It inspired me to do research on video game graphics as well, if it wasn’t for this game, I don’t think I would be this video game crazy 💖💖💖
When I saw how people argued about DKC in comments (before seeing that part in your video) I thought something like "Oh no, he didn't just shit on DKC." But the way you presented the issues of the game was really good! Many people just rant about popular games they don't like, but you presented your arguments in a well mannered and objective way through comparing the game with its sequels. This way you can defuse arguments early on and your actually won me over (to an extend) by pointing out the issues I realized since the first day I played it. I really love DKC1, but the item placement really infuriated me as a kid. While it didn't age as well as its sequels and looks kinda simple in comparison, it started this awesome series.
In Brazil, Top Gear is almost a SNES institution. Everyone loves this game, everyone has played this game. The music is legendary. That being said, Donkey Kong is awesome boo
I like Donkey Kong well enough, but if I were to call Drunk a monkey's uncle, wouldn't I be insulting his sister? I don't remember her talking smack on DKC. Anyway, the criticisms Drunk leveled are perfectly valid, so whether his sister splayed herself for a silverback or not is irrelevant.
Nintendo Power rated DKC as game of the year in 1994 over FF6, back when Nintendo Power was still a pretty big deal. I don't know if DKC is over-rated today, but the hype did get a little out of control when it first released since everyone thought rendered graphics were so amazing at the time. It's still a great game and even a classic but I can see where SNES drunk is coming from.
Yeah he has some decent insight most of the time, but I can't agree completely either, Final Fantasy V is one of the worst games Ive ever played. This comes from a huge FF fan who has played every single one save XV yet.
Jet Diamond V is my favorite FF, but I only like 1 through 6 at all -- the fancier the graphics, the worse the SquareSoft/Square/SquareEnix game has felt to me. 7 breaks the traditional damage system and 8 just bastardizes it -- and it's just downhill from there (to me). 5 took the brilliant concept of thr job system of 3 (real 3, not 6/"3 USA") and made it totally custom and ground-breaking. Were some elements of 5 a little corny? Sure, but so what? It was awesome!
[Feels bad for the person who says V is the worst FF but hasn't played XV yet.] Then again, my opinion is of no real import, and I thought the series' best were V-IX, except for VII. [Equips Flame Shield/ Slots Elemental with Fire materia in armor / Junctions 100x Firaga to ElemDef]
I remember picking FFV for the Game boy Advance and being fascinated by it! Loved how you could mix and match abilities you unlocked from different jobs (specially the Ninja being able to dual wield weapons)
No stretched out 10 minute mark videos. No begging for likes and subscriptions. No in video ads. Just great SNES content. No sir, YOU have a great rest of YOUR day.
DKC is my favorite game of all time, and I don’t see a big point in dogpiling but I actually find the later levels to have insanely frustrating platforming that requires an unnatural precision thats way different than the other platforming. And I think the secrets are ways to sell nintendo power, which isn’t in print anymore. But to me, its an IMPORTANT game. The reverse engineered 3D sprites were used up to saber wulf and are more fluid than doom or mk. And the final boss is just incredible. I understand that dk2 refined everything to perfection but its more endearing and minimalist, by dkc3 its so busy and grungy. Sometimes its just fun to be a gorilla in a factory throwing shit.
I will say this: you've got some balls on you. :P I will say I can't understand your view for tales of phantasia, as well; as aside from just being a stellar game it basically spawned it's own genre and left enough of a positive impression for two separate remakes. Seems like well-deserved hype to me..
cant understand your points about tales of phantasia. like in many games you cant remember everything about a story, but the endimg in top is somehow ... very interesting. even the battle system is interessting and somehow funny and not every enemies or boss is easy sometimes you rly need good tactics to win.
Maaaan, that's a lousy reason for saying Demon's Crest is overhyped. Save for the tundra and towers most levels are fairly short anyways. I'd much rather go about a tiny portion of a level in that game that go through the enormous hassle of grinding in Goemon after dying, hahaha. Still like it but eeeeeehhh... Still, props for including FFV! It's an amazing RPG.
Agreed. Although I *thoroughly* recommend everyone try the English translation of the PS1 version if you haven't already. I love this game too, but the PS1 version is superior in nearly every way, while still keeping the feel of the SNES original.
Hm, Donkey Kong has one of the best and most iconic soundtracks EVER... watch random retro gamer videos and will here it sooo often. You should play the first two games for the soundtrack alone... Further I want to say that the early levels of Donkey did not age so well but the beauty are the later levels like the factory and the cave levels. But sadly it seems that nobody plays the later levels anymore... ... (btw. it's the same for all the other DKC games: the early levels are the most boring ones with the music that is of lesser quality).
I really like the underrated list but the overhyped doesn't really make sense when you only say that the games from a franchise are not as good as another one in the same franchise. That doesn't make them overhyped, it only makes them "not as good" in comparison to their other iterations.
Bang on about Final Fantasy V, I believe it is likely underrated solely due to its lack of US release on the SNES. Here in Europe, we never had any until 7. So I look at 5 as 4 & 6s equal.
Top Hat Gaming Man ummm FFIV and FFVI are far superior products.... graphics to start..... narrative second.... FFV is easily one of the 3 worst FF titles..... while it's SNES peers IV & VI are arguable the best titles in the series.
Hey monkey's uncle, I love DKC1, but your critic on the 100% is on point, this is still an awesome game, the music is outstanding and .... Wait, you just put it on the list to make people comment right? I need to remember that trick for my own channel, maybe I will use it someday to. PS: Love FF5.
Well, Tales of Phantasia for me was one of the most memorable J-RPG that an I played on Super Famicom... But agree that the linear motion battle system is a mess and the high rate of random encounters is bit annoying...
Would have thought Tales of Phantasia would be underhyped...I get it it was the progenitor of the Tales franchise, but it's Japan Only and unless you follow the franchise(or played the unjust GBA version) chances are you won't know about it. I think it gets grossly overshadowed by the later titles.
Sometimes it feels like this -> a well made game that deserves the praise it gets so it is liked by a lot of people = overhyped because a lot of people like it....
Lol thats kinda how I feel actually, a good example being ff7 over the other ps1 ffs... but that's because it's not that ff7 is a bad game, it's actually great- it's that the others which are also great are completely overlooked
TOP GEAR! Great call. Both the original and the sequel were some of the rare racing games where I could actually compete with my best friend, who was a flight/racing game master.
The dialogue in Tales of Phantasia is just okay? Damn, I guess my DeJap version's saucy dialogue is much better than what we ended up getting on the PS1 and GBA :P
That's what I was thinking, he probably played the PS1/GBA version, and automatically assumed the SNES fan translation by Dejap had the same dialogue. I still think the dialogue is one of the best parts of the snes version, if you have the Dejap translation applied.
Top Gear actually comes from the a series on the Amiga. Much nicer looking, higher quality music, but for whatever reason, the amiga has problems using both music AND sound effects...making it feel weird that you generally can't have both.
Pretty sure it was just a hardware limitation. The sound cards back then were integrated right into the motherboard and for cost effectiveness (seriously I've got a magazine advertisement saved on my computer right now from the 80's/early90's advertising a 10mb hard drive for over three grand) relatively simple with few channels. The personal computer was still an enthusiast device back then, all hardware was pricey as a result.
The first Donkey Kong Country is the best in the series. But I ain't gonna call you anything nor unsub as the quality of your videos is on pair with that game ;)
Could not disagree more regarding Demon's Crest. I think it has some flaws, but the level design is *fantastic.* The way it has multiple nonlinear levels which are huge and sprawling, with paths leading to different boss fights with different rewards, is just fantastic. It's essentially a middle ground between Super Mario World and a full-on Metroidvania.
But Tales of Phantasia has a great plot! Somewhere unpredictable, somewhere even grimdark-ish. Jokes are fun, characters has flaws in their personalities, none of FF of SNES time had that.
The characters in Final Fantasy VI beg to differ. Many of them are flawed or at least imperfect and have a level of depth that was unreached by many games of its time. While you may or may not have liked the game, it did have great characters.
@@Verbalaesthet How much hype did Demon's Crest even get? Donkey Kong Country was promoted through the roof. Demon's Crest was something I almost never heard of.
Couldn't disagree more about Tales of Phantasia. I think the combat system is a lot better that Star Ocean's: better looking, more fun, IMO. I think the story is great, the dialog has lots of fun moments (as you said that was a positive in FF5, I don't know why would you say ToP's bad)
Hmm, while at first I absolutely loved Bahamut Lagoon, after a while of playing the game felt kinda dull and boring, I vastly prefer Tales of Phantasia over it, although I do have to agree that the plot is pretty damn generic.
I felt the same about Bahamut Lagoon. I got so bored that I had to drop it. I absolutely loved Tales of Phantasia the first time I played it in 2006, and even after playing the newer versions I can still enjoy it.
I do have to admit that in part it was my perfectionist, min-maxy type of gameplay that helped me get bored of it, it's specially worse with tactical games. It's a great game though, the music is really good, I wish I had the patience to finish it nowadays, along with Front Mission.
I wouldn't say it's generic, it's just not FF6/CT level. You can't really tell much in the future of ToP's plot, you can't really tell what's coming next, the ending caught me COMPLETELY off guard! lol
+Arctica171 The Super Famicom version of Phantasia is flawed from inconvenient apporach to melee battles against aerial enemies to poorly planned learned magic order (Have fun going through Ymir's Forest/Treant's Forest with only 15 panacea bottles). FFV put attention to combat in a way many entries wouldn't dare to do today and... gave you options to play however you like, not even FFIII gave you such opportunity. FFV gets overlooked because people want to play a game for story and not to play the game itself, so naturally it doesn't get much attention.
Zicconnuts I don’t think people overlook FFV for any reason other than it wasn’t released in the west until very recently. When I was younger we didn’t even know it existed, due to Square’s weird localization process. I was so confused when FFVII came out for a long time... “Final Fantasy VII! Wait did I miss something?” - 12 year old me.
+XiongGou Final Fantasy V has been available in the west since 1999 being part of the Anthology compilation, though released near the end of the PS1 life-cycle. That being said, it was a bad port of the SFC version with bad sound quality and localization, on top of having need to load.
Underhyped- EVO: Search for Eden, really awesome platform where you upgrade your animal with new parts to evolve yourself so it has some RPGish elements. Fish level->Amphibians->Reptile level (let's you turn into a bird if you want)->Mammal level x2 where you can turn into a human. Lots of weird stuff in the game too including a really hard to find alien level hidden in the Reptile era.
"If you like this real time combat style, you could argue Star Ocean does a much better job than Tales of Phantasia" I mean yeah you could argue that, but you'd be wrong.
Great video! I agree with everything only have 1 different opinion. I would alter slightly your closing remark on Kirby 3. I would change "Even if you like Kirby, feel free to skips this one" to "Unless you really love Kirby, feel free to skip this one." It's still a decent Kirby game, fans of the series wouldn't want to miss out on it.
X3 was my favorite one! The different machines, boss battles, playing with zero for the first time, the secret gold armor, soundtrack and then some! A buddy of mine still has the original snes copy too!
I remember the last time I played Demon's Crest, I was just sorta playing at random and I had no idea where to go or what to do... and then like 30 minutes later there's the end credits and I'm like... WTF?
I actually really liked your content til now. Mmx 3, dkc and demons crest are OVER hyped?! Mmx 3 is the waaayyyy wayyy better than 2. Maybe thats opinion based or something like whats your fav ff game. But demons crest?! Thats a gem
Mystical Ninja man that was one of my favorite gamed I owned back in the SNES days. Great co-op Top Gear was another I sunk a lot of hours into with friends.
Most people probably never played any of these games except Donkey Kong Country, which I don’t think is overhyped. It’s fun, has great music, great gameplay, great graphics, and brought a forgotten gaming character back to the video game scene after a decade of abscense.
i cried when you put phantasia as overhyped. its an unknown rare gem that needs MORE popularity, not less. unmemorable plot? where do you get that? FF5 had less plot. And the plot ties in with symphonia. a strong disagreement here.
It's only overhyped because it never came out in the States. There's nothing special about it other than the graphics were pretty good when it INITIALLY came out IN JAPAN.
Kirby's Dream Land 3 is a beautiful game with fantastic gameplay and charming music and anyone who finds it boring or slow probably thinks The Fast and the Furious films are good movies.
I love FF5, but besides labeling the story as lighthearted, I would also call its structure fairly, well... stupid. There are some transitional moments in there that are incredibly hard to swallow, even with all of the suspension of disbelief in the world. I will give you that it's a much more involved game than FF4 though, which although good has its reputation carried mostly through nostalgia. FF4 has its strength (good level design, some hard fights near the end, and forcing you to adapt your strategy a lot through constantly changing party members), but from a storytelling perspective it's a bit of a dusty relic. And to be fair to F-Zero, it's pretty challenging in its own right. I sure as hell can't beat it, anyway.
+Ghost7856 Final Fantasy V definitely has a stupid storyline, but its combat at least make up for it. I love the job system and that's really the only thing that makes me come back to it.
whaaaat i thought the storyline was cool in FF5. i mean sure it's simple, with the crystals and all, but shit got REAL in that game dude lol. I thought the whole Faris being a woman thing was kind of stupid though. But not stupid enough at the time to make me think the storyline sucked. I tend to look at games more of how I enjoyed them at the time of playing though, not by todays standards.
FF5 is cool, but I wish there was more of an incentive to play around with the jobs end game. Why would you not have a party full of Mimics with S-shot?
FF IV is vastly superior to V. The only thing anyone ever talks about when referencing V is the job system. People have fetishized it into something it's not. Just because a game had a different gimmick, but literal garbage story, and literal garbage overall plot/game progression (how many times were you forced to warp back and forth between "realms" or "worlds" or whatever?) Its an insane way to drag out a needlessly long game. And on the topic of "but muh job system" for Christ's sake, III did this years before and yet most people act like II (which has its own problem for sure, but not like V, at least it has a compelling, if basic, story) and III don't exist! V is a mockery to me, of the entire series. It's not even witty enough to be a satire or self referential parody, because it doesn't commit to that. It literally half-asses everything compared to other games before it, with its one trick pony gimmick, that everyone likes to tip their fedora to, which in and of itself, while perhaps somewhat forward thinking in design, is not even that useful, as others have pointed out. There really isnt much incentive to swap around jobs or play in creative ways. Yeah, I guess you CAN make a party of 4 time mages, but would I ever want to? Not really. This game is traumatically bad compared to other Final Fantasy games, ESPECIALLY IV which actually has a beautiful story and themes for something told through chibi sprites. V falls between the asscrack of IV and VI, both games that have vastly much more to offer in terms of an experience, which is what RPG's and Final Fantasy in particular, are supposed to be about. Not grinding away hopping back and forth through the same worlds wasting your life away for a retarded nonsensical story about a guy named, "Butz". Its as if the programmers knew the whole game was like a stupid fucking fart joke in the midst of the actual intellectual conversation that are the Final Fantasy games.
Ghost7856 i should slap you silly. FFIV invented the idea of story telling through typed narrative. Still probably the best story of the FF series.... also one of the best endgame sequences. I can admit the gameplay is very linear. Although it is also the first final fantasy to have complete dungeons for optional summons.... slyph/bahamut. Also two of the best FF characters come from IV... Cecil and kain. IV & VI stand in a league of their own for SNES..... V belongs with mystic quest..... just straight inferior
Dude, the things you brought up about Demons Crest were total bs. It had multiple endings based on your choices in game, multiple different demon forms with different abilities, rpg elements, and great music, all things that were pretty novel at the time.. You complained that you have to play levels over again, but you neglected to mention that you do so with different forms and it unlocks new areas. Its painfully obvious that you just played the game a little bit, and then made it fit your narrative for the video. Try again.
"Its painfully obvious that you just played the game a little bit, and then made it fit your narrative for the video." Oh please. Demon's Crest has its own video on this same channel. "You complained that you have to play levels over again, but you neglected to mention that you do so with different forms and it unlocks new areas" That's right it did, and the level design STILL was not a good enough match with all those cool abilities. That's my entire point, the level design did not hold up its end of the bargain. But, you're still under this weird impression that I'm calling it a bad game. Demon's Crest is not a bad game. The entire point of this channel is about managing expectations for the player. You recommend it, but I'd rather play something like Sparkster. There's nothing inherently wrong with that.
Im just saying I dont think its overhyped, its hyped for good reason. I mean how many games have you played like that of that era? It was original on many fronts. Also, I cant stand that Sparkster, when I first played it was on an emulator and I was like is this some fan-made knock off of Rocket knight Adventures (genesis)? I loved Rocket Knight Adventures though.
I think Chrono Trigger is overhyped. Now before you all assume I'm being an edgy bastard, I have legitimate reasons supporting my opinion: 1. The pacing is all over the place. The story doesn't really begin to pick up until you reach Zeal, and by then you're about 3/4 done with the game. Even worse is the amount of backtracking you'll be doing up to that point. Whereas most RPGs don't have you backtrack until you have a means of quick navigation, Chrono Trigger makes you visit the same locations multiple times long before you get the Epoch. So much time is needlessly spent trudging across the map trying to reach a time portal to take you to the Brink of Time just so you can hop to a different era and undergo a long trek to yet another time portal. And all the while you'll be fighting the same enemies in the same spawn locations every single time, desperately hoping there's a way to run past them that you missed the other 5 times you ran through the area. 2. The character development. RPGs are known for their character development, and Chrono Trigger is no exception, however it implements this poorly. Half of the characters have the majority of their development locked away behind sidequests. Lucca, Frog, and Robo all have hefty story bits that expand their stories, but you won't discover these unless you play some sidequests. To make matters worse, these sidequests aren't even available until you get the Epoch. Having small bits of character development tucked away in sidequests is one thing, but to make large chunks of story that contribute to the characters only accessible by way of lengthy endgame sidequests is just poor design.
- Demon's crest is worth trying out, if you are a big SNES fan, but probably not worth ur time to beat it. - Didnt even know Kirbys dreamland 3 was a thing lol. Kirby Superstar is AMAZING - MegaMan x3 is garbage, might as well play the other good ones if youre gonna play megaman - I used to played King of Dragons at this arcade when I was a kid. it was the shit. never knew it was on SNES til 10 years later lol. - Donkey Kong 1 is the best one in the series, if not evenly matched with #2 . dunno what ur talkin about lol. that music, the level design. its a good game. - Top Gear was good, but I preferred Battle Cars. that game was awesome - Tales of Phantasia was awesome at first, i liked the battle system. But I got bored with it after a few days of playing. - Final Fantasy 5 is my favorite on SNES. Actually no, i have to tie it with FF6. but ff5 is so fuckin good, and pretty challenging late game if you dont grind to the point where its easy as pie.
It was great to see King of Dragons get some hype. I love that game. And yes LoMN is a sick game. I remember playing through it with a friend and having alot of fun. Great Konami snes music and playing Gradius within the game :) I haven't played Final Fantasy V before but after your recommendation I'll have to try and track it down. Thanks.

DK fan, Fuck you asshole.
Top gear is severely underrated. Cybernator is also underrated.
You monkeysss uuuuncleeeee
Captain Astronaut IKR
Top Gear is great! I didn't like Super Mario Kart and never saw F-Zero back in the day, so this was my go to racing game.
@TheOnionKingdom yes, it was huge. Very toe to toe fight with the Mega.
Im from Brazil and I played a lot of Top Gear. Never even met F-Zero when I was a kid...
I thought Demon's Crest was gonna be one of the underhyped games :/
I had heard great things about it and my friend had the cartridge in their collection so I gave it a try. Its been a few years but I just couldn't get into it. I am sure things would have been different if I had played it as a kid, as I would squeeze any and all redeeming characteristics out of a game if I rented it or owned it when I was young and bored. But as an adult playing it for the first time I found it had a few cool features, but the gameplay itself wasn't something I could get into.
Ikr it is a great game and it isn't very recognized
It is nice but honestly gets boring real quick. I find the gamebody and NES demon serie more fun.
lol I'd never even heard of it
Funny thing, he later praised it as a great game on the metroidvania style. Maybe he just didn't understood it at the time of the video.

I honestly don't know how they made the PSX versions so awful.

Hope you kept the original packaging...! 😁
It is worth more than my whole SNES collection 😂
played donkey kong country recently with my gf, she is 23, so she never played it before.
+stucazzo2000 I remember Bubsy being advertised everywhere. My worst SNES experience as a kid was SimEarth, by far.
+SNES drunk I never played SimEarth, Simant on the PC was fun. :)
+SNES drunk SimEarth was notable in that it's one of the few games that carried a warning of sorts in Nintendo Power. It was diplomatically put, but NP basically called it boring. I got a mere handful of hours out of SimEarth. One of the worst gaming experiences of my life.

Bubsy Clawed Encountered with the Furred Kind is a pretty awesome game
I disagree on Demon's Crest. The whole point is to go through the levels and explore to find all of the alternate paths and items, which leads to the true ending. I kind of think you didn't play it the way it was intended to be played. To anyone interested in the game for any reason please give it a chance.
Kirby's Dreamland 3 is amazing for the amount of combinations between the companions and the powers, I've yet to see a game with so many combinations. Plus, the art style is amazing.
Art style and music are some of the games best aspects.
Agreed, Dream Land 3 deserves the love it gets. I love the game's music and graphics so much.

But the way you presented the issues of the game was really good! Many people just rant about popular games they don't like, but you presented your arguments in a well mannered and objective way through comparing the game with its sequels. This way you can defuse arguments early on and your actually won me over (to an extend) by pointing out the issues I realized since the first day I played it.

[Feels bad for the person who says V is the worst FF but hasn't played XV yet.]

DKC is my favorite game of all time, and I don’t see a big point in dogpiling but
I actually find the later levels to have insanely frustrating platforming that requires an unnatural precision thats way different than the other platforming.
I will say I can't understand your view for tales of phantasia, as well; as aside from just being a stellar game it basically spawned it's own genre and left enough of a positive impression for two separate remakes. Seems like well-deserved hype to me..
100% agreed
I really enjoyed tales of phantasia as well. Other than Donkey Kong Country, this is the only other mention on his list that I disagree with
cant understand your points about tales of phantasia. like in many games you cant remember everything about a story, but the endimg in top is somehow ... very interesting. even the battle system is interessting and somehow funny and not every enemies or boss is easy sometimes you rly need good tactics to win.
"Tales of" series are great, and ill allways love the snes one.

I can't understand why square decided not to bring it overseas.
they thought it was "too difficult" for American audiences.
“It’s Megaman how bad can it be...” once it leaves SNES? Pretty bad. Abysmal even.
I really like the underrated list but the overhyped doesn't really make sense when you only say that the games from a franchise are not as good as another one in the same franchise. That doesn't make them overhyped, it only makes them "not as good" in comparison to their other iterations.
Yeah, I think “not as good” is what he has been implying, not saying it is bad
Bang on about Final Fantasy V, I believe it is likely underrated solely due to its lack of US release on the SNES. Here in Europe, we never had any until 7. So I look at 5 as 4 & 6s equal.

Would have thought Tales of Phantasia would be underhyped...I get it it was the progenitor of the Tales franchise, but it's Japan Only and unless you follow the franchise(or played the unjust GBA version) chances are you won't know about it. I think it gets grossly overshadowed by the later titles.
I'm very happy you put FFV in the "under-hyped" category. It's one of my favorites in the series.

Wow, Demons Crest is one of my FAVORITE SNES games!

You prefer DKC3 over 1? You really are drunk.

But Tales of Phantasia has a great plot! Somewhere unpredictable, somewhere even grimdark-ish. Jokes are fun, characters has flaws in their personalities, none of FF of SNES time had that.
YES agreed.
huitard2 The good characters of Phantasia are Dhaos, Klarth and Arche
The characters in Final Fantasy VI beg to differ. Many of them are flawed or at least imperfect and have a level of depth that was unreached by many games of its time.

You can't really tell much in the future of ToP's plot, you can't really tell what's coming next, the ending caught me COMPLETELY off guard! lol

Throwing shade at Phantasia while claiming FFV was underhyped put me in a mental pretzel, but the rest of the list was pretty good.
lol ikr?

The Super Famicom version of Phantasia is flawed from inconvenient apporach to melee battles against aerial enemies to poorly planned learned magic order (Have fun going through Ymir's Forest/Treant's Forest with only 15 panacea bottles). FFV put attention to combat in a way many entries wouldn't dare to do today and... gave you options to play however you like, not even FFIII gave you such opportunity. FFV gets overlooked because people want to play a game for story and not to play the game itself, so naturally it doesn't get much attention.
I started Phantasia years ago but never got far. It seemed great though. FF5 though is in my multi-tie for favorite with 8 and 6.
Donkey Kong is amazing
dislike
"If you like this real time combat style, you could argue Star Ocean does a much better job than Tales of Phantasia"
I mean yeah you could argue that, but you'd be wrong.
Awesome list, thank you for mentioning Top Gear and FF5. Both games that I truly loved. Definitely underrated.
Dude, Deamon's Crest kicks ass!
X3 was my favorite one! The different machines, boss battles, playing with zero for the first time, the secret gold armor, soundtrack and then some! A buddy of mine still has the original snes copy too!
I'm with you on everything apart from DKC. DKC1 is the best of the three in my view :D
+SufamiDan Thanks for watching
My pleasure. Love the channel.
DKC is the best of the 3, and one underhyped game that is great and still awesome today is goof troop
I remember the last time I played Demon's Crest, I was just sorta playing at random and I had no idea where to go or what to do... and then like 30 minutes later there's the end credits and I'm like... WTF?
Demon's Crest is amazing! Megaman X3 is amazing! Fail list!
Great co-op
Top Gear was another I sunk a lot of hours into with friends.
And the plot ties in with symphonia. a strong disagreement here.
i did love FF5 though. dont get me wrong on that
Joshua Read sadly I did not get to experience neither game....someday...
Tales of Phantasia and Donkey Kong Country are on my favorites list for the SNES.
demons crest overhyped?- bye.
Have a good rest of your day
Dude, the things you brought up about Demons Crest were total bs. Try again.
"Its painfully obvious that you just played the game a little bit, and then made it fit your narrative for the video."
Oh please. Demon's Crest has its own video on this same channel.
"You complained that you have to play levels over again, but you neglected to mention that you do so with different forms and it unlocks new areas"
That's right it did, and the level design STILL was not a good enough match with all those cool abilities.
I'm with DrStabkill on this one
Some of my favoties yet uderhyped SNES games:
1. Prehistorik Man
2. Out Of This World
3. Stunt Race FX
I agree wholeheartedly on Kirby 3. Superstar is way more fun and usually much less expensive.
I think Chrono Trigger is overhyped. Now before you all assume I'm being an edgy bastard, I have legitimate reasons supporting my opinion:
Kirby Superstar is AMAZING
- MegaMan x3 is garbage, might as well play the other good ones if youre gonna play megaman
- I used to played King of Dragons at this arcade when I was a kid. it was the shit. never knew it was on SNES til 10 years later lol.
- Donkey Kong 1 is the best one in the series, if not evenly matched with #2 . dunno what ur talkin about lol. that music, the level design. its a good game.
- Top Gear was good, but I preferred Battle Cars. that game was awesome
- Tales of Phantasia was awesome at first, i liked the battle system.
Thanks.
i loved the soundtrack on final fantasy 5. check out this track on youtube Final Fantasy V Soundtrack: Fate In Haze
5's soundtrack sounds like a little kid banging on an electric keyboard.
@@themerovingian4252 nice joke.
@@themerovingian4252 Bruh
Tales of Phantasia? Really? I mean putting Donkey Kong on the list was a bit strange but you lost me there.
