Might be long, might be boring in parts, but I'm so glad you did this. Anyway, after watching I was inspired to see if I could improve my GF calibration - I did some measurements, cleaned the lens and camera, measured again and it was worse! I get 14 inch out vertically and 1/8th inch horizontally for a near centre point. Which would be fine if it was consistent I could adjust, but it varies on each boot by 1/8th to 1/16th inch!
I'm really surprised that it would change so much after cleaning. Especially for the worse. I presume you're ensuring your material height is consistent and entered correctly, no debris on or under the crumb tray, etc.?
I love it HAHA @7:38 you hear a grown man get excited trying to figure all this out. I get the same way! It's satisfying when you spend time figuring it out & finally when you do... That ah ha moment🧠 is so Worth it.❤ I get it, LOL It's 1:19am and I'm playing with the Glowforge Pro. Trying to figure it all out. Trying to maximize every part of it.
Hi Chris, Great video - for 3 days I have been fighting the eternal centering / focusing issue and this gives me hope of something to try tomorrow as I just can't get the machine to work anymore. It sits in the middle of the machine after the initial guess move - I hope it (slightly dusty logo being cleaned) works. Could you perhaps suggest anything you would try please? Ribbon cables seem fine, pins look fine in primary white cable etc. Anyway, brill video - thank you!
Thanks! I made this years ago when the first batch of machines had just arrived and we were all trying to guess how it worked. I would suggest you contact Glowforge support, since they can do some remote diagnostics and give you a better indication of what's going wrong. It's probably either your WiFi connection, or a problem with the cable, but which one is hard to say without access to the logs that support has.

i appreciate your making this video. mine does weird stuff when it boots as well and this has me wondering if i can replicate your results.

Chris I’ve turned mine on several times now and it won’t hone in! I’m at a loss what’s going on. Any ideas?
Glowforge support is probably your best bet. I definitely can't tell from here.
I think the ticking might be the camera focusing
That's right. I didn't know that at the time.
Mine repeats failed every time. I need to manually align the logo with the camera in lid.
Have you experimented with changing the lighting?
