I’ve been trying to hone my skills to start a channel too and used macho’s channel as a quality template- but it’s not a great idea because it’s just demoralizing trying to hit such a crazy quality bar for a newbie to videography/editing like me
The Consolizer is a really cool idea. Due to the cost and difficulty of installation though, I decided to mod a GameCube and add a Game Boy Player instead. I’ll say after going down the rabbit hole of mods/accessories to the GC, the cost ended up being a bit more than the Consolizer, but it has the added capability of playing GameCube games. Just something to keep in mind to anyone out there who is looking at the Consolizer mod, but is concerned about doing the installation.
Honestly there are some really clean 3rd party options if we are strictly talking cost and functionality. Modified game cube is much cooler in my opinion 😎 👌. Does it have a cartridge slot?
I grabbed one of these in the old shell and I love mine. Never thought I'd find a better way than the gamecube + gameboy player. Was worth the price and it's always fun to get reactions out of people with the crisp video on an HD TV with a SNES controller
I was waffling about ordering one of these a little bit ago but I have an extra GBA kicking around, and with this update I decided to nab one. Keep up the killer videos, man!

@@MachoNachoProductions yes, tell me about it, I had to do a double take on the price, thought it showed $7.53 :) Normally its the shipping cost that determines my purchasing decisions, its a hit and miss for me buying from the US. @@MachoNachoProductions That is why living in the US is a luxury. You don't have top worry about expensive shipping or things just not being send to you because no one wants to send to your country.

Yeah,... Way too much money for the amount of of time, effort, and sacrificing an existing gameboy to implement. Not to mention,... It's currently unavailable now, and in spite of other competing options for the total cost. The 3D printed case looks pretty janky too. Gonna hard pass on that, unless it's available for something closer to 60 dollars even.
There is an excellent reason why these kinds of products are so bloddy expensive: FPGA's are bloddy expensive, as are HDMI encoder chips. Add in just how much R&D is needed in the first place, custom--low volume!--populated PCBs, etc., the need to pay people a living wage, and you start to get an idea of why they cost so much. In the end, I don't think that they are overpriced, just expensive.
Honestly, you're probably bettter off buying the gear to dump your own carts to roms and then playing via RetroPi or other emulator. Or just play on the original hardware as is. Personally, the main reason that I'm not likely to buy one is that I like games from a bunch of different systems and this is limited to just the GB lineup priot to the GBA, which means that I'd have to have a bunch of other systems as well. In the long run, I'll likely get Mister and just play via that.
@@KeithOlson They are, but after the cost of the kit and possibly installation, you're a pretty significant portion of the way to having the money for Mister. And rather than just being able to handle GB, GBC and GBA games, Mister will handle quite a few other options.

Great video as always. I am impressed how slick it looks in the case. I noticed that you can use the link port. Imagine having 2 consolizers, 2 TV's you could do couch co-op with a friend. Great stuff!
No disrespect to Elliot, but I stopped watching the Retro Future once I discovered this channel. Your mods are 2000% more useful and production value is top notch. Hopefully this channel blows up big time soon so we can see some major mods
That would be awesome to have two consoleizers with link cable play on two different TVs!! Wish they made it for SPs I only have one original advance..
I'll probably end up doing this for one of my GBAs. I just put the Funnyplaying screen in my DMG. I always do these projects cause they seem like fun but then I never end up playing with them. I mostly play roms on my 3DS or Xbox Series X.
Wow you picked the perfect time to cover this I've been really curious about a decent gba stream setup! That's a bummer about the dvi but if the headphone jack offers a way to still capture sound then this seems about perfect
This was such a good video! Props on you. I have ordered one myself and will definitely use your video as a guide. You can see everything clearly and thoroughly explained. I love it!
Awesome video Tito as always! I wasn't big into the Consolizer as I have a Gameboy Player and the Innovation S-video out from back in the day, but this looks so good now. I also picked up Gradius Galaxies the other day and playing on a tiny screen just seems weird now. LOL.
I disassembled an 8bitdo retro receiver and integrated it into my consolizer for fun. Now I actually use insidegadgets adapter inside the consolizer to use an actual GBA to play on my TV!
I was in the original lottery of 100 units and still feel like a winner. The original mod really wasn't that difficult. I assume the flex cable makes the kit cheaper, but also decreases the amount of users that feel comfortable installing it. I do like the new case style, but I'm not sure if the original kit fits. I also would like to upgrade the firmware because it increases the compatibility with DVI+, but I haven't pulled out the USB Blaster, yet.
Yeah, that price tag is Woof, I hope at some point it becomes easier to install and cheaper. I have 1 GBA lying around with its screen busted, and I think another from a long time ago. I would love to do this with them.
It's a big ask. Personally, I'm probably going to go with Mister as that will play these games and doesn't require the destruction of any real hardware. Not to mention that it will play a larger selection of systems.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade I would agree if it wasn't for the GBA's I have already having broken screens. Plus the stuff that's come out since this video show a lot more promise than this one does, in some ways.
I have a v1 sitting on my work bench. I think this is the final motivation I needed to put mine together. It's a bit more painful than this version to put together but I know it'll be worth it to tide me over until the Pocket.
This would be perfect with a gamecube controller hookup instead of the snes controller. The Hori gameboy advance controller layout is the best way to play GBA titles. Especially now that there's a cheaper alternative for around $30.
this is one of those mods I'm torn between doing or not. it just cant do it to a perfectly functioning GBA, maybe if I find one with corrosion on the buttons or some other damage. But for now I will stick to a GBPlayer even though it wont look as good as this.
if you go on eBay auctions, you can find TONS of Japanese GBAs with varying degrees of conservation and functionality. Often with not-so-great speakers, screwed up polarizers like the one shown here and extra yellowed cases. Those go for very low prices, and often GBAs that just plain out don't work are power button related issues, which is bypassed here. The prices when I hunt those down to sell backlit modded consoles were pretty low (or at least reasonable. FAR cheaper than buying locally sourced screwed up GBAs... The market was stupid here for a while). Dunno nowadays tho, been a while (before _The Incident_ happened) since I've bought anything there.
Looks so cool and amazing job doing this. No way in hell I could do this myself and a preassembled one is way out of my price range. I’ll be sticking with my GameCube and gameboy player
I just built a GBAConsolizer using this as reference. Please note the power switch wiring at 9:23 results in up off, down on. It has to be flipped at either end for it to function up on, down off.
New update looks great! Case design is pretty sleek. As someone who frequently drops screws I appreciate the screw-less design. Small thing, having 60 Hz mode OFF makes the consolizer run at stock speeds. 60 Hz on is a sliiight overclock. Something like 6 seconds faster over an hour. I do my speedruns with 60 Hz off for that reason. I was lucky enough to get an old-style kit last year. It's been wonderful. My only complaint is that updating the firmware was pretty daunting for someone with no experience flashing chips with a USB flasher. Haha. Maybe a moot complaint by now since the firmware has been finalized 😅 My TV also didn't like DVI+, but yea I agree it's a minor thing, just plugged a 3.5 cable from the box to my PC and added it as an audio source in OBS, no issues.
Another great system just hit the market. The Retroad 4.3" HDMI Famicom handheld from Ali-Express and with the KryzsioCart flashcart from Ebay it's great. The Retroad 5 Plus with the GB/GBC Extension Converter and an Everdrive GB X7 is another winner. I use my NES/SNES Online controllers with mine using the 8bitdo SNES and NES dongles. I did need a Mayflash 9 pin to NES adapter I got for my NES/SNES Classic Mini though.
You can get the Gameboy player adapter that plays all the gameboy games on the gamecube. You're going to need the disc as well. But I think it will be way cheaper versus having the DIY kit. Simple set up but it is based on personal preference. I've had mine since it came out growing up and it works beautifully. As long as you take care of it that baby runs all of your handheld games. Heavy on-set of nostalgia😁.
14:26 - That Blade Runner poster though... The man's got taste. Cool video. Maybe one day I'll tackle this. Not sure if my hands will ever be steady enough.
Honestly, the only change I'd make is instead of having a Save option for the settings, I would have simply made it so the settings get saved whenever a change is made to them. This would have been the better way to handle this I think.
So, the kit is $205 (with the case) Gameboy Advance is going for around $80-100 on ebay (if you dont have one already) Bringing the build total to $285 at a minimum. Plus all the work to actually assemble it (if you dont pay someone to do that part). The Analogue Pocket is $220 for the unit, plus $100 for the dock. (totaling $320) Soo.. yeah, the kit *is* overall cheaper, but not by a lot, and considering the Analogue Pocket you can un-dock and still use as a portable unit, makes it a much more viable option.
That thing looks so cool. I want one, but I'm afraid I won't actually be able to do it, and I think I'm too proud to have someone else do it for me lol
I hope this DIY kit gets developed into an SP version. I currently have an old GBA SP that had it's screen and battery bloat and a kit like this is great.
Awesome job with the video! I’m biased since I have the rectangular consolizer with the clear top, but I genuinely think the old design looks nicer. Also, for the price you’d hope it supports 1080p. The gbaHD supports 1080p, although that resolution is not quite ready just yet. Still, this is an awesome way to play Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games.
Yalll r crazy, the new case looks WAY better. I have the original GBA Consolizer too & am awaiting delivery on this new one, only my new one has a clear top too which is much nicer looking than this solid color top shown here.
I like the idea of it all but am not fully a fan of it. I would welcome a slight increase in overall size if it meant I could have the cartridge be top-loading like a SNES and have the part that covers the cartridge art be clear so we could see the art of the cart. Other than that, this is a fantastic way to play GBA games. Sourcing a GC, GB player and modding it is so much more work these days(plus u gotta get a HDMI cable). The consolizer is actually much cheaper by comparison
It looks like a fun project but it's a little pricey and the Analog pocket is around the corner. Plus you can get a Mister FPGA around the same price point or lower. Thanks for your video though :)
@@semer9 yeah it is a open source project. The only down is less Features and the Shield must be soldering when you dont get a ready one. The Bad is that only 1-2 yt make Videos about it and with that it is unknown in the retro community
This was a great video and i like this build. I can see how easy it is to just take it on the go for a vacation or something. But personally for me im ok using my gameboy player or just taking my gba.
Was way into this until the DVI+ stuff came up… does it really not just output all audio over HDMI by default? Is there any way I can verify if this mode will work with my setup before I spend the money?
God damn it I was just about to buy the TV-out IPS mod, time to find another donor GBA!!! Other than the cost, the only downside of this for me is the SNES controller port. I don't hate the controller, but it's the only thing I don't have D:
I've been rocking a Consolizer for about 2 years now, and with the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance libraries being the primary games I play, this unit has been a dream come true. The 720P output on a 4K TV has been crisp, and with no lag added from the Consolizer, the games I love look gorgeous. I was curious to check out the video because I saw the new case design (although, who am I kidding, MNP videos are all must watch anyway) which has me wondering if Laser Bear sells the file to print one at home. If there is one thing I would change/add, it would be a port cover to keep dust or particulates out of the cartridge slot. It made me think about getting one of those GBA blanks shown in the GB Back-up/writer video. Thanks for another great video!
I think this is amazing! I want one but the price tho!? To be honest I think it’s about $100 too expensive to be accessible to the majority of folks that would want one. Add the difficulty to install and I think most will shy away due to added cost of having someone perform the install. This is more expensive than the GBA player for GC.
I want to do this just for the sake of doing it, but TBH, I can't think of any GBA games out there that I wouldn't already be able to play the original version of on an SNES.
And to think that the GameCube Gameboy Player was once less than $50 new and under $20 used at GameStop in the 2000s. Of course- it’s still not great unless you have a crt or component cables which I also bought when they were cheap.
It would be nice if they made a controller that was only A+B, Start+Select and L+R buttons as some sort of screenless bigger buttoned GBA-like controller.
Umm source? I suspect that the way he does it applies less stress on the board compared to your suggestion. If you let the board cool down between each pin, it will alternate between like 50°C and 350°C multiple times, and each time you will have to apply heat longer in order for the area to go back to the melting point. If you do them sequentially, not only is it faster to solder since the area is already hot, meaning you won't have to apply heat for as long to reflow, but also the board will not go through multiple cycles of hot and cold.
@@thomapple sorry I've should have added a time: 8:23 the most heat goes into the metal pin, this is not about heat stress, it is about the plastic part not melting or deforming.
i wish that they made a kit where you dont need fancy tools like a sautering iron, a pre assembled one but maybe for like 1 or 20 dollors higher or so because they also need a gba
Yo!! I really want to make this, but the soldering of the super small components makes me super nervous and would love some help. Also, love your videos Tito!!
I know they're tying to stick with the GBA form factor but it's be nice if they released special shells that look more like a console... even to the point were t could look like a Super Nintendo and the GBA cartridge can be slotted in like a super Nintendo... anyway this thing looks so freaking cool... if I wasn't getting the analogue pocket I'd totally try this out.
@@MachoNachoProductions I think an L shaped cartridge type extemdor would do it but someone would have to design it lol... and a complete overhaul of the shell hahahaha...

Maybe a moot complaint by now since the firmware has been finalized 😅 My TV also didn't like DVI+, but yea I agree it's a minor thing, just plugged a 3.5 cable from the box to my PC and added it as an audio source in OBS, no issues.
Thank you for the clarification ☺️👍
Another great system just hit the market. The Retroad 4.3" HDMI Famicom handheld from Ali-Express and with the KryzsioCart flashcart from Ebay it's great. The Retroad 5 Plus with the GB/GBC Extension Converter and an Everdrive GB X7 is another winner. I use my NES/SNES Online controllers with mine using the 8bitdo SNES and NES dongles. I did need a Mayflash 9 pin to NES adapter I got for my NES/SNES Classic Mini though.
Sounds very intriguing 😀 may have to look into it
You can get the Gameboy player adapter that plays all the gameboy games on the gamecube.
Thanks Justin 🙏 One of my all time favorite sci-fi’s for sure ☺️
Bro thanks to u, I'm an experienced gba/gbc modder and will definitely tackle this one as well!!
That’s awesome man! That’s so great to hear 👍 glad I could help ☺️
Me: jeez, looks tough and expensive.
(Pops zero mission in)
Also me: Worth
This Video is great. It helped make install a lot simplier for me.
Honestly, the only change I'd make is instead of having a Save option for the settings, I would have simply made it so the settings get saved whenever a change is made to them. This would have been the better way to handle this I think.
"FOUR CORNERS!!!" -Tommy Wright III
So, the kit is $205 (with the case)
Gameboy Advance is going for around $80-100 on ebay (if you dont have one already)
Bringing the build total to $285 at a minimum.
Plus all the work to actually assemble it (if you dont pay someone to do that part).
The Analogue Pocket is $220 for the unit, plus $100 for the dock. (totaling $320)
Soo.. yeah, the kit *is* overall cheaper, but not by a lot, and considering the Analogue Pocket you can un-dock and still use as a portable unit, makes it a much more viable option.
That thing looks so cool. I want one, but I'm afraid I won't actually be able to do it, and I think I'm too proud to have someone else do it for me lol
I absolutely understand. It is quickly becoming my favorite way to play gba games though 😁
@@MachoNachoProductions Oh, I bet, it looks great!
I'm normally not a fan of consolized handhelds because I love handhelds, but this is easily one of the best I've seen.
Can't wait for the 3ds consolizer.
Me too!
I hope this DIY kit gets developed into an SP version. I currently have an old GBA SP that had it's screen and battery bloat and a kit like this is great.
I was thinking the same thing. Would be even more portable
Tito knocking it out of the park again! Chef's kiss!
Thank you dude! As always, really appreciate you 🙏☺️
I actually like the old square box better, but I can see how this one shows off the iconic shape of the AGB.
Still waiting on an SP version tho.
Gbahd has gba sp build
Square box does indeed look good as well. An sp version would be sweet!
@@-Gothicgirl- I've yet to see anyone do a GBAHD. I'm not brave enough to do it without an install vid
@@axelkusanagi4139 there is a video where a yt build a Gbahd out of a sp with soldering the Shield.
@@-Gothicgirl- Found it. Dubesinhower lifted a bunch of pads getting it done...Gruesome.
I definitely agree the previous case do look nicer.
I also really like he clear tops! The boxy design of the old shell looks more like a console which is nice
Although this new one has a slight N64 feel to it which is pretty cool.
Yalll r crazy, the new case looks WAY better. I have the original GBA Consolizer too & am awaiting delivery on this new one, only my new one has a clear top too which is much nicer looking than this solid color top shown here.
Hey! Big fan, you should do a crash course/starter tutorial about soldering.
There are cheaper gba consolizer like the Gbahd for under 100 euro
@@-Gothicgirl- Nice, I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the tip :)
@@semer9 yeah it is a open source project. The only down is less Features and the Shield must be soldering when you dont get a ready one.
The Bad is that only 1-2 yt make Videos about it and with that it is unknown in the retro community
Analog Pocket
*As if they are actually going to be able to sell it*
@@Tobunari but that cost more then 200€
I already have the original GBA Consolizer & am patiently awaiting the new version to be delivered. Hope it arrives soon!
4.5x uses interpolation which is why there is no shimmering but does have a slightly softer look. That is due to the interpolation.
Damn that’s a great option for those who can’t get hold of a Gameboy player! Your house must be filling up with these custom projects 😅
Haha, yeah, it’s getting pretty crowded trying to keep up with all these mods
Always making me want more stuff, damn that’s cool
Thanks dude ☺️
Tito your videos are so satisfying to watch.
Thank you Lance, so happy you enjoy them ☺️
This was a great video and i like this build. I can see how easy it is to just take it on the go for a vacation or something. But personally for me im ok using my gameboy player or just taking my gba.
Gameboy player is another great way to play too, each have their own pros and cons
Was way into this until the DVI+ stuff came up… does it really not just output all audio over HDMI by default? Is there any way I can verify if this mode will work with my setup before I spend the money?
Whenever I see one of those custom flex ribbon cables I say sheesh
i love macho nacho thursdays! another great video.thanks for the upload
Thank bud! Glad you enjoyed this one ☺️👍
God damn it I was just about to buy the TV-out IPS mod, time to find another donor GBA!!!
Other than the cost, the only downside of this for me is the SNES controller port. I don't hate the controller, but it's the only thing I don't have D:
It would be cool if there were other controller options.
So glad you’re enjoying your consolizer shayne and the channel ☺️🙏! It truly is a fantastic mod 👍
Tito you make such good content man. Keep it coming pls.
Thank you Mike! Really appreciate it buddy 🙏☺️
So is there an easy consolizer for the SP as well? I really haven't seen much online...
I think there is an open source project that uses the sp motherboard. I’m planning to check it out
I think this is amazing! I want one but the price tho!? To be honest I think it’s about $100 too expensive to be accessible to the majority of folks that would want one. Add the difficulty to install and I think most will shy away due to added cost of having someone perform the install. This is more expensive than the GBA player for GC.
looks interesting. Like from Spain!
Thank you 👍☺️
Once the MiSTer core came out, I never looked back
Mister is amazing. Can’t wait for ps1 core
Easy mod, great directions thank you
You’re most welcome ☺️
So you turned a portable system into a non-profit able system. Great job. What brilliant idea.
If it wasn't for the analoguie pocket around the corner I'd be picking this up. Looks awesome.
>$250
>cost of a Gamecube: $40
>cost of a GDEMu: $90
>cost of a GBPlayer, no disc: $50
>no soldering needed: Priceless
I liked, subscribed, and rang the bell.
When you solder connectors, I would recommend to alternate the side you solder. So one side can cool down a little bit while your solder the other.
I got a homeboy 88 gba clone and it’s not bad tv output and runs very smooth
6:04 "Next comes the most difficult part of this mod: remove the CPU flex cable from the panel."
Wow that was awesome now to find a gba
Glad you enjoyed it ☺️👍
i wish that they made a kit where you dont need fancy tools like a sautering iron, a pre assembled one but maybe for like 1 or 20 dollors higher or so because they also need a gba
Yo!! I really want to make this, but the soldering of the super small components makes me super nervous and would love some help. Also, love your videos Tito!!
imagine a gba consolizer kit that makes it look like a mini little super nintendo complete with top loading game slot
GOD. I love this theme.
As always, im ready!!
I agree, that would be so awesome!
@@MachoNachoProductions I think an L shaped cartridge type extemdor would do it but someone would have to design it lol... and a complete overhaul of the shell hahahaha...
The smoothing would be a great setting for 3D GameCube games like super monkey ball Jr or need for speed underground~
Bought mine earlier! Should be shipping out soon.
Awesome, I think you’ll really like it 👍
