You are so real and true to your subscribers Cheng. This is the quality most minimalist youtubers do not have. They try to flex their minimal lifestyle. But you on the other hand feel relatable and the way you talk about minimalism makes it seem approachable. Thanks for being there. I hope you will remain like this, even after you have millions of subscribers. Wish you health and success. Keep inspiring us.

Minimalism is the art of knowing how much is just enough. Digital minimalism applies this idea to our personal technology. It's the key to living a focused life in an increasingly noisy world.

Time allotments for social media are essential. Discipline is key in order to enjoy social media and not be consumed by it. Balance and awareness brings a healthy level of usage of it.

  • @jmgnovaes

I took the extreme route a while ago by deleting all my social media apps. I can't deny that I felt really good about it, but sometimes I do feel kind of left out of my friend's circle. "Didn't you know? I posted on my stories" is a phrase I hear often. So I'm pondering adding a little bit of social media back into my life and your tips will come in really handy. Thank you!

    • @SSNUTHIN

When I started getting that response from people, I responded with "my phone number has been the same for a decade" and it was often easy to verify that someone had my updated number. While I understand folks valuing their conveniences, I think it is a bit absurd how some people insist we use specific proprietary software to be sociable when the whole conversation started with them forgetting someone. I think out of sight, out of mind, is more at play and feel like we should hold our peers accountable for such things.
I apologize for the blunt way that I am presenting this, but really I hope that if\when you reactivate your accounts that you do it for yourself and to convenience your life more than convenience your social circle.
      Wishing you luck.

    • @jmgnovaes
      @jmgnovaes 4 года назад +1

I completely agree with you, @SSNUTHIN. It wasn't as much of they trying to make me feel bad for something, more of an "oh, I thought you already knew that". Not because they don't care about me, but more because they're used to everyone using social media.
It's an inconvenience but not one I care much about. With time, they got used to me being the one that never sees what they posted. Some even started sending me links to a post they wanted me to see.
But I'm beginning a career as a freelancer and social media kind of plays a big role in this new world we're living. So I think I should come back to it to broaden my professional reach. I was just resenting doing that because I just really got over social media; it doesn't really suit me anymore.
PS: You don't need to apologize. "Be honest and direct" is a sort of mantra I like to use in conversation, and I appreciate people who do the same.

    • @lucasgdrezes

I've had a very awkward experience because of that. I ran into a friend and asked: "Hey, what's up? How's your boyfriend going?" She looked at me as if I'd said something wrong and left. A friend of mine was close by, came up to me and said: "Are you crazy?! They broke up!" How could I have known? If I used social media, it would probably know that apparently.

I've deleted Facebook & Instagram app on my phone for almost a year, feel more peace with my life. I feel more anxiety when scrolling on those stuff. Because I always compare myself to others' life... so one day I just DELETE it on my phone, and rarely open it on my laptop. (Only some time I need to login with Facebook) Deleting it brings me joy, but still has con. Something like I didn't know everything about my friends' life until I met some of my friend, they will talk about some friends life recently. And I realized, "Ha! They just like the feed in social media. But in more analogue way! 📻" But hey, I told myself: I should concentrate my life rather than others'. The social media is just... not my place. Thanks for sharing your ideas about social media, cheers!! 🍻

For me social media came as a way to expand my world and find people with similar tastes, mindsets, ideas. Yet I do realise how much time I spend hanging on my Instagram account. It does envolve a great deal of mindless scrolling indeed. Since quarentine time arrived however I've noticed that I'm more aware however. I don't want to just scroll up and down all day. I want content that I actually care to spend my time watching. This channel was an addition. Several others were decluttered. My instagram has a thousand less people to who I'm subscribed and the count is still coming down. Who knew we could follow so much people? Right now I'm focusing on not being so mindless. On reading more instead fo always going for a social media app. And yes, I do read books on my phone. It is actually convenient when I want to just spend 5 minutes of time on myself.

So I've reduced mine long before this video. I unfollow on IG as many a day as I can and I also split my account to have subaccounts which are focused on one thing: the arts, zero waste/decluttering, people I actually know, hobbies (those sometimes get their own space because some accounts are too post-happy but I do enjoy their content). I actually don't use IG on my phone unless I'm posting so I delete it when I'm done and use it on my laptop for messages.
I completely deactivated Facebook with no intention to reactivate unless absolutely necessary (like when I was looking for a place to live) and everyone on Twitter I want to stay in touch with I'm moving over to Discord or IG. As soon as Twitter fixes the account archive downloads I'm taking mine and then making it annoying to get on there by intentionally losing my passwords out of my password managers. I know I have poor impulse control with Twitter so I really have to create significant friction.
Interestingly, IG did something so creepy and inappropriate the other day that I may never reinstall it until after iOS 14 comes out. Not really needed and I am considering moving to VSCO for photos anyway.

I'm a bit of a caveman when it comes to social media, so don't quote me on that, but if you don't want to be rude unfollowing friends on Instagram (or you hoard followers by following people first ;P), I think you can follow them and just "mute" their feed, stories and whatnot. Similarly on Fb you can stop "following" people you "like".

I have been completely social media free for about 3 years now after starting my Facebook in 2005. Initially I treated Facebook as a semi-public journal\blog, but as I got older and Facebook developed I realized it was no longer performing that task well for me.
I deactivated all of my social media accounts for a year then proceeded to make a backup (my whole online life in 5 gigs) before permanently deleting my accounts.
I realised that the only content that I valued on Facebook was my own, my pictures and my posts, so I opted to preserve that while I explore other options to give me what I wanted from Facebook without the rampant materialism and social hierarchy. It has drastically improved my stress levels and productivity and has pushed me to reassess how much time I spend other places in the digital sphere.
I would love to see you talk about job hunting and career building like a minimalist. That's is a space where I am aware that I need a more minimalist approach but struggle with the fear of presenting too little and applying for too few jobs.
Thank you as usual for your content! I am always showing my friends because I think your advice can be cross applied to different lifestyles and I enjoy the soothing pace of your videos.
    I wish you well!
