Part 1: • Van Lathan on Growing ...
    --------
In this clip, Van Lathan spoke about moving to Los Angeles in 2005 and being determined to make his own way. When Vlad spoke about his experience living in L.A. for the first time and feeling like it was fake, Van explained that he sees a lot of people falling into the same trap because they get caught up in what they believe is the L.A. lifestyle. Van then detailed how he took the bus to his first job at a video game company, and he added that he met a lot of real L.A. people by interacting in his community. From there, Van spoke about how people succeed in L.A. by sticking it out and figuring out their own way. To hear more, including Van speaking about celebrities tricking him into not being filmed for TMZ, hit the above clip.

I agree with Van. LA is what you make it. I moved to LA from NY and I didn't encounter fake people per se, however, I didn't notice that friendships tend to be a bit more transactional here. In NYC, you had to "prove" yourself or loyalty to generate a friend group. In LA it's more about supporting peoples business and ideas, showing up to events, buying their goods or services if they are an entrepreneur. It's not bad, just different. Friendship relationships are different in the South too. I have met really good genuine people here is LA. In LA you will run into fake people just like anywhere else, but you may run into more of them if you hang out around those circles.

  • @esotericjp

As a LA native, the concept that LA is “fake” is so old and and misrepresents the overwhelming majority of the city and the people. People purposely move to specific parts of LA to just be in the industry and often times, the “fake people” they run into are transplants themselves. If you only want to be in that industry, you’ll only really associate with people who also want to be in the industry or ones who currently are in the industry. But that is such a small fraction of LA. People are coming here with the desire to be in certain fields and they’re interacting with outsiders and giving them the interpretation that LA people are something they’re really not. Most people are real as hell, and live real ass regular ass lives. I think people should stop saying “LA is fake” and should say “the industry and people apart of it in LA are fake”

Depends on how hard you work. A lot of people think they're working hard. You may be working harder than your family, friends and associates who have accepted normal lives. I lived it. All through high school, I was obsessed with making it to the NBA and worked out regularly. I didn't make it, obviously. Long story short, once I realized the kind of work it took to even have a fighting chance, I was blown the fuck away. Most people have no clue what it takes to be good, let alone great, so fall short of the effort and ultimately fall short of the success.

This "fake people come from all over" thing sounds nice but the reality is that in some areas of the country, being fake is part of the "culture." For example, west coast people are very passive-aggressive. I've seen people move to other parts of the country and when they came back, they had different personalities because they assimilated and took on some of the less than desirable traits of the people in that area.
And if I'm going to be really real about it, I've found some races/genders to be noticeably more fake than their counterparts.

I’ve definitely encountered the areas of fake people, but I also been to parts of the city where people are genuine af and will give the shirt off their backs for you. Has nothing to do with people who are fake themselves, just their perception of a given reality.. from my experience O.G. Californians we’re always dope. Once I had no where to go in Anaheim and this lady with kids of her own offered me food and everything. This new generation moving there can give less than a fuck about you though.

You either deal with “fake people”, or become fake. The only real thing about the industry is that to really make it, you have to sacrifice something about yourself, or someone. Talent is not enough.

Nah, vlad is right. Even normal people in cali have a habit of feigning interest, this does not happen on the east coast. If they arent interested, youll know before the conversation is over, in cali youll know when you dont get a reply to that text
