As for the chainmaille, I make them, and have three for myself. Two of them are steel, and weigh around 13kg each, while the last is aluminium, and only comes in at around 4,5kg. They are so balanced, that as long as you're wearing a belt around it (to keep it from slapping your stomach every step you take), you don't feel the weight of it until you take it off. And it's not that warm either. After all, it's got around 10-15,000 holes in it...

It is an amazing cover! I love it! And I love your cosplay, especially the fact that the arcs on the side of your face that is toward the camera make me think of sound waves XD The vocal acrobatics in it are just delightful from every member of the group. I've never been upset when Omar is singing with the group in the times that he's been featured. He does have a lovely crisp, clear high tenor range, and he does work well with the group. Could he stand out a little bit more for my tastes? Yes, but he does vibe well with the group on the whole.
As for Eli, you are 100% correct. I've heard him referred to as the vocal equivalent of a utility player from baseball, and I've come to thoroughly agree with that assessment. He's able to perform outstandingly well in whatever part he needs to play, whether that is in the forefront or in the support space. I always tell new reactors to VoicePlay to never underestimate him. And yeah, he would be an amazing rock and roll vocalist. I love it when he gets to strut his stuff in that domain.

I’ve waited a while to watch this because I was afraid I would get interrupted and I knew I wanted to watch it without any distractions. As usual the combination of your love of good music, your nerdy gaming side, and your breakdown and analysis was worth waiting for.
I love that you caught that little duet between Geoff and Cesar early on. I don’t think most people pay attention to it because it’s not as “epic”, but it’s one of my favorite parts.
Kudos for you pointing out that it was filmed at PattyCake. I am a big PattyCake fan as well and love trying to spot props they’ve been used elsewhere in their videos. In this one (rather comically) the Warhammer is also in PattyCake’s production of Snow Spears. It’s Snow White’s story set to Britney Spears music. At one point the dwarves are singing and marching through the woods, (“Boys, sometimes a girl just needs one”, lol) one of the dwarves is carrying the hammer. I just about fell out of my chair when I saw it.
Cesar is indeed wearing real chain mail which was 20 pounds. He’s not the biggest guy and in between takes he had to lie down. Between the weight of the chain mail, that thing around his neck (gorget?) and the gauntlets, they were wearing him out and a bit painful. But that didn’t stop him from doing the single ladies dance and a little bit of ballet in the behind the scenes!
I believe Geoff got the chain mail from Thor Instruments. They sell it on Amazon! The gauntlets are also metal and he had to clean them because they were coated with machine oil to keep them from rusting during transit.
I know I’m a little late, but Layne did the arrangement for the next production which is we don’t talk about Bruno. As usual it’s got a lot of comedic elements to it. (And tortures Geoff a bit)

I have been going through a rabbit hole that started with Tim Foust and Home Free to now Geoff Castellucci and Voice Play. The absolute soul-vibrating sound Geoff can produce and his talent in range has melted my brain. Now, they did Skyrim and the fact that they included Dovakin in Dragon-tongue and the Fus Ro Dah has me squealing in joy. I have to subscribe because you have so much energy and joy when you go into what's going on in the music, and you play back all those wonderful low notes. Keep up the absolute loveliness and joy!

Not a gamer myself, so I really appreciate reactions from people who know Skyrim. There's so much to say about this performance but my standout moment is that first Cesar solo in his baritone range. He so often sings up high (not needed when you've got Eli AND Omar!) and uses his trademark tender breathiness--and I love it! But it's a special treat when we get to hear this richness. Thanks for your analysis and for your nerdy enthusiasm! I get pretty giddy over VoicePlay too.

VoicePlay + Medieval = EPIC!! They just never miss. Every single thing about this one is amazing. I love the dark timbre and the dramatic feel. I've always had a thing for that deep, evil bass sound in orchestral music so when I saw they were doing this I was so excited. I still get chills listening. It's also really astonishing, but their next one goes clear to the other end of the spectrum and is absolutely hilarious. I laughed through the entire thing. And Layne sings a little solo too! I actually like it that they have so many guest stars because they can really match them to the music to make it just a step above what other a cappella groups can do. I'm not knocking their talent at all, but VoicePlay just has that extra something that makes them stand out. Fun fact: Cesar is wearing real chain mail and it weighs 20 pounds!

About the chain mail: While chain mail is heavy, yes, it is also held up by your belt, which means that the weight is distributed very well over your shoulders and hips. It's obviously not weightless, but it's far from unwieldy. You'd need to be able to fight in in after all. In the video you actually see the large belt he wears for this exact purpose.

    • @janetdw

However Cesar is not a real big guy and the chain mail did hurt his shoulders and had to lie down between takes on the floor.

Chai mail is quite a lightweight armor piece, compared to other types. I have 15 years of historical reconstruction behind and I mostly wore chain mails =) It averages at 7-8 KG and does not strain you or slow you a lot (of course if you get used to it).

Well, when you consider how many younger guys don't have enough hips & butt to hold a towel wrapped around their waist more than a few steps, it's no wonder that he had a rough go of the chainmail. He's not exactly a huge dude. A woman his height with a small waist & big hips might have an easier time with it with a belt to help distribute the weight.
