    Mozart, Bach, Tschaikowsky, Beethoven, Holopainen.
Tuomas is clever. Music like Mozart's or Beethoven's back then no longer resonates with most people today. So what is Tuomas doing? He creates a metal band that is actually just the cocoon for his real project. He slowly leads people back to classical music through the back door. You can see that this works in the Nightwish Army. I still know a lot about the works of Mozard, Bach, Tchaikovsky and Beethoven. But I haven't heard real classical music since school days and that was over 20 years ago. What came closest to that so far is symphonic metal and I only discovered that for myself in the last few years. What we have here in the video now comes closest to what I last heard back in school. Tuomas is just awesome. He really is the Metal Mozart. If not the reincarnation of him disguised as metal lord.

I teared up big time on Ad Astra. It has become super special to me, because it was originally released at a time when the COVID crisis was really kicking up. I am an ambulance driver and i was driving home one evening, in the dark, on the first day of total quarantine lockdow here in Italy, where some towns in particular were having the dead brought away in army trucks because there was no space to keep them anymore. I drove the ambulance along completely empty streets, listening to Ad Astra, and seeing children' drawings on the windows, saying "thank you doctors" and "all be well", and italian flags. It was sobering to no end. It hit home in a way i can hardly describe.

Unbelievable that one man can compose this. He really is a genius.

    • @mnewm21
      @mnewm21 3 года назад +6

Genius for sure, but that is how nearly all classical music is composed as it most often needs that singular vision. In a band of 4 or five instruments you can get away with multiple voices but when composing for 30-50+ instruments a singular vision and viewpoint is usually required, although I am sure he got a lot of advice and help with the arranging side of things. The result is cinematic and beautiful and kudos to the creator of the visuals as they are also genius. Again to hear the music and create a visual palette that seems to be what so many including Tuomas think matches perfectly is pretty cool.

So, comparing to what emotions, visuals and imaginations previous Nightwish albums brought, can ve suprised some did not find their way to this one. It took me some time too :)) This album is a mastery, but it also means Nightwish probably never gonna be the way they were. It is natural evolution (😎yeah, pun intended) but also a hard thing to acknowledge.

    • @ShearWater509

It's because, sadly, 50% of humans are of below average intelligence. Low-brow "music" like what you speak of appeals to those who don't need to engage their higher brain functions to process it. Something like this, on the other hand, makes you think, and many people don't want to think. That requires effort and energy, and laziness is easier. I am truly sorry if that sounds rude or inconsiderate, but it doesn't make it less true. I wish everyone understood music like this the way we do. If they did, we might not be in the crisis we are now. Too many people put too much value on what is right in front of them instead of thinking about the future beyond the end of their lives. Maybe they just can't think like that, or maybe they don't care - I don't know. All we can continue to do is to advocate for our planet and future generations the best way we know how.

It is interesting that I had this discussion with my stephfather yesterday. He is all about classical music and I remarked that composers of the caliber of Mozart and Beethoven are around even today. The reason they don't get the recognotion is because they do not make classical music like Mozart or Beethoven. Williams, Zimmer and Morricone make movie scores so good that they can reduce me to tears as I watch a movie. Tuomas just oozes skill but is 'only' a metal musician. Yoko Kanno is a god in the anime industry with her music but who cares about that, right? It isn't classical so it obviously sucks ass.
One thing I learned watching reaction channels like yours, the Charismatic voice, Julia and Chase is just how insanely talented some of these people are. I must admit that I used to be one of those people looking down on metal but no more. I may not like everything I hear but I appreciate the skill shown.

The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is literally a OST, only for a book and not for a movie: Tuomas is a big Scrooge McDuck fan and worked directly with Don Rosa, who invented Scrooge McDuck's character, to create this album which puts into music the stories of young, poor Scrooge leaving home in Scotland and working tirelessly for decades, traveling all over the world pursuing his dream of becoming rich. It's a surprisingly deep and beautiful succession of comic stories, carefully worked into the real world timeline (a few examples: Scrooge is friend with Geronimo, Buffalo Bill and Calamity Jane in the west; in 1912 is traveling on the Titanic when it sinks; he visits Russia to buy stuff just before the winter revolution of 1917; becomes friend with Theodore Roosevelt before he becomes US president; and of course eventually gets to Klondike for the gold rush). I assure you, having read and loved the Don Rosa stories, the music Tuomas made is absolutely perfect. If you have read the book, the music immediately brings up the mood of that specific chapter. It's amazing. Might be harder to fully appreciate without knowing the Don Rosa stories as a consequence, but still interesting.

I studied zoology and ecology before switching over to graphic design and illustration, so these two albums make me ugly cry often.
There's a deep paradox of feelings with regard to how I feel about humans and our place in the natural environment. On the one hand, it's amazing how far our technology has progressed. I mean, I'm writing to a person/people, living on the other side of the planet, having a cry over music written by another person whom we might never meet or speak to, via the internet. (the brilliant part of the internet). On the other hand, how much have we had to destroy to get to this point and how much more will be destroyed before the majority of Homo sapiens understand that we rely on functioning ecosystems for our species to continue? The rest of nature will survive without us, we are not above extinction.
(I apologize, the ecological grief of the last 2 years wears heavy on my heart. Add the devastation of the pandemic to that, misinformation, distrust in science the lot. I am equal parts heart broken and furious. For now I try to appreciate the nature that I can, while I can.)

Pip Williams is actually the person who does the orchestral arrangements for Nightwish. It’s a shame people seem to neglect him most of the time and give him the credit he deserves.
My cousin (who is from Finland like myself) actually studied music, composition and music technology in London and took classes from Pip on orchestral arrangements. My cousin even got to go with Pip to the recording sessions in London for the Life and Times of Scrooge album. I think he even got to be part of the male choir and sing on one of the tracks if I’ve understood correctly. Ironically, I’m not sure if my cousin is much of a fan of Holopainen’s music, but I’m sure it was a memorable experience nonetheless.
My cousin is making various kinds of music, from heavily electronic to dark ambient, but most of his music is actually orchestral, so those orchestration lessons with Pip have certainly been worth it.

The choir parts really hit me in the feels, Troy's piping on the "Moors" section sends shivers up my spine, and Floor's voice (I presume it's Floor) in the Ad Astra is just.......excuse me while I collect the shards of my mind back together for about the 500th time.
    Thanks so .much for this.

This song is a musical, spiritual, natural, and calming journey or experience. There’s nothing more I can say that would do it justice
Hope the family is well. Elizabeth is also great. Damn. Those pipes sways get me. Violins/cellos, bagpipes, pianos, and timpani drums are a sure-fire way to get to me to shed a tear. Like you have said before, it makes me feel home
This journey has gone by so fast. A few Nightwish songs to do after this: any song from the first two albums for Tarja but especially The Carpenter. It’s so different. Meadows of Heaven is an Anette song I highly recommend
    Also for other bands,
I also recommend Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Dr. Butcher/Jon Oliva’s Pain, Chris Caffery, Machines of Grace/Circle II Circle, and Archon Angel

We live on such a beautiful planet, why are we so intent on destroying it? I’m in what would be called the twilight years of my life, and Tank, I hope and pray that your child grows and matures on a planet that is still beautiful, and doesn’t have to watch films like this to know what the world and nature was like. Bless you man.

Carl Sagan FTW!! The "Pale Blue Dot" is an extreme moment in my life! Another reason I respect both NASA and Nightwish so much! SO happy! NASA turned the craft around to take that pic! NASA was so worried that attempt would ruin the camera... God bless us all for this great snapshot of reality, from so far away! Sagan's words, very poetic.... "A mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam"... US! WE WERE HERE!

I think he istn't recognized as a great composer because he takes a more indirect? aproach, he writes everything on keyboard tracks, and then he gives this tracks to Pip Williams and he translates this music into sheet music for each of the individual instruments in the orchestra, so is not Tuomas who composes the full extent of the music, but undoubtedly he is the maker of all this symphonies.

Tank: I'm not going to pause on this one lets just sit through it then talk.
Tanks Computer: Ha Ha we'll see about that.
I think Tuomas is a legend and am not trying to take anything away from him, however if this is like past NW Albums I believe Pip Williams does the actual orchestral composition. It is my understanding from some interviews with Tuomas that he writes the lyrics and the bands music and kind of explains what he wants and then Pip starts writing the orchestral parts. I believe Tuomas has a "natural ear" for music he knows what he wants it to sound like but didn't have enough background in music theory or arrangement to write for the whole orchestra and get it to come out the way it sounds "in his head". I think he can tell Mr. Williams their should be a string section here doing something like this and play something on his keyboards and Pip can "translate" Tuomas vision into a score for the orchestra. This is at least the way I thought it was but it has been 20 years so who knows if this is how it still goes, if it ever did.
I did check the Album cover and curiously while Pip is credited with arranging, orchestrating and directing the orchestra & choir (except on How's the Heart, Tribal, & Procession). Oddly the orchestra was The Pale Blue Orchestra. I believe with that since the album Once that the London Session Orchestra / London Philharmonic Orchestra has performed on their albums.

    • @aamuamanda5482
      @aamuamanda5482 3 года назад +1

I think you might have a wrong impression here. My understanding is that Tuomas composes all the music (and has always composed) and make the demos for the orchestra. Pip Williams does the arrangement for the orchestra.
      Pip Williams's own wors:
"My role with Nightwish is that of orchestral arranger and coordinator. I transcribe Tuomas’s ideas for the orchestra and choir and organize the London sessions, carefully liaising with Tuomas, the orchestral contractor (Isobel Griffiths), the studio, the conductor (James Shearman) and the music copyist/librarian (Richard Ihnatowicz). While I transcribe Tuomas’s parts for the arrangements, I have freedom to adapt and add my own ideas to the scores. I can make suggestions regarding the line-up and suggest possible changes."
Arrangement might be a lot of work, and it requires a lot of knowledge, but it's not the same thing as composing. Williams tells that he is transcribing - so Tuomas composes, Pip Williams makes arrangements, makes it work for the orchestra.
If Tuomas would be only saying things like "I want a string section here", I don't think Pip Williams would be using words "transcribing" or "arranging". He would say that he composes for Nightwish, not Tuomas.

This music and imagery is so humbling. Personal struggles are insignificant.(not meaning they are, but when looking at the pale blue dot they are which for me makes it different when thinking about it).As you say, the chances that we are here instead of not being here. Our time is short. I want to make the best of it, for me, for the world. Why bitch at stuff if we can marvel at so many things. Care for the world, even little things count. The world is awesome.

I drop his name everywhere I can, even though I'm pretty sure he really doesn't mind, and mainly wants to make music. He had his times of being a jerk, but he really is a sweet guy. as far as him being known here in the US, well, outside the artists that write their own, there are maybe 3 people that write every single pop song out there. Can you imagine their reaction, if we actually uplifted this kind of composer. They'd probably trip out. heh So glad you did this :) I really feel he is taking classical music to a level where more will be curious about it and enjoy it. Wish I'd had it when I was little, for sure.

Love the video. It's been great accompanying you on your roller coaster journey with Nightwish thus far. It is a shame majority of the world will probably never hear of Nightwish. Western countries are ignorant to anything that isn't"POP". Tuomas has done a few movies scores. Mainly in Finland and Europe. Namely The Matriarch and the Alone in the Dark movie. He truly is the Mozart of our age. And thankfully no where near as arrogant as Mozart.
