Fly Fishing With A Spinning Rod - Using a Casting Bubble
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
- I try fly fishing with a spinning rod using a casting bubble on the Nantahala River of North Carolina in the delayed harvest section near Bryson City. I show how to rig a fly on a spinning rod and the problems I found using the technique. If you are going to give a spinning rod fly bubble a try, check out how it worked for me. About 20 minutes south of Bryson City, Nantahala fishing is pretty good - I show that in a different video I will post after this one.

I was taught how to use a transparent casting bubble with 4 ft. of leader and a micro sized fly on a 2 week trip to the Colorado Rockies. I was 12 years old and loved the sunrise bite, the lakes surface would be covered in rings called boils, and casting a fly using spinning tackle was a sure fire hit.
Spot on use clear bubble and as long of a leader you can still cast. We used this setup in lakes that harbored some big fish. Once you find the right fly they like, shaboom!
I use a clear water bobber and a dry fly 2-3 feet under that works.great with a steady retrieve at my local pond later in the day
My dad and I used to do this when we used to backpack the Alpine lakes in Idaho. We used a normal red and white bobber, and a bead head hairs ear or and bead head fly. Cast out and very slowly retrieve just to keep the line tight. I crush panfish here in NC using the same technique. I have never tried rivers. I don't believe the fly can get deep enough due to the bobber being swept away at a faster pace than your fly line.
Probably that is what is happening!
Mr Moore,
I have used a bubble and fly in rivers and creeks most of my life (40+ years) and have frequently out-fished others. My method gives a bit more control over the fly by putting it on a dropper about 3 feet above the bubble. This lets you pull your line tight if needed to keep the fly up near the surface, which can be especially useful when using a soggy dry fly. This is one of my favorite methods on a creek.
That is a great idea! That way you have tension and avoid my problem . I'll try that! Thanks
Whoaa dude! that's the way indeed thank you very much for this very lethal tip.
My favorite way to fish a fly
It is always fun watching you have a good time. It is contagious. Keep up the good work.
Use the clear plastic bobber

When casting a bubble you will get a better presentation if you stop the line with your finger before the bubble hits the water. This will cause your fly to land more naturally and ahead of your bubble reducing the chance of tangles. In Europe. they use what they call Bombarda or Sbirulino floats as opposed to the water-filled bubble. These are more aerodynamic (cast like rockets) and are available as either floating, slow sinking, or fast sinking types. They also come in a variety of weights. You can find them on ebay.
Wow! Thank you very much. I want to redo this video with an improved bubble when I go to the mountains again in April. I'll grab one of those floats!
it works, but here is the difference: we use it with 11’ rods minimum, the bubble is totaly clear and we use a 5-6’ leader. its used for long distance casting with flys and other tiny baits. i never used such a tiny combo like you ;) but it looks really interesting. will try it next season.
I need to try your approach!
In shallow water applications like you were fishing, I use the smaller CLEAR casting bubble. The clear version does not scare the fish. When I fish farm ponds for bluegill for example I may use a small red & white bubble with no problem. Also for my main line I personally never use anything heavier than 4lb test. I sometimes go as light as 2lb test. Just my experiences tho. Hope it helps! Love your videos.
Thanks! The 8lb Ardent Gliss is actually thinner than 2lb test. I think your point on the clear bubble is right on and that is probably the problem. I'll try this again in the Spring when I go trout fishing again.
YOU MUST USE A CLEAR BUBBLE SO FISH NOT SEE IT
@@KayakhacksFishing I'm sorry as I don't sub to your channel, but any updates since?

Haha, we used to use push button Zebcos on cheap Kmart rods with flies and would wear the fish out . Simpler in the 1970s, haha
I grew up on a Zebco!
I used this technique to catch fish in Colorado.
Spinfly line, an unusual short thick "flyline" for spin rods that you attach to your mono line and then shortish leader and fly.
Thanks for that advice
Over here in Northern Ireland we fish for Atlantic salmon with the bubble and fly on certain rivers. Deadly.
im from n.ireland too mate get yourself a bombarda i use them for trout off the beach
It has worked for me before. Evergreen, Colorado
Spin fly fishing is definitely best done at a lake, where you were fishing looked absolutely perfect for your choice of panther martin, vibrax or any kind of spinner really as long as the spin action is good! You would have landed a bunch, spinner fishing is so fun....
I'm literally 20 seconds in and I liked and "poked" that subscribe button
I really appreciate that! I'll work even harder!
No bobber … ultralight … 4-6lb test…. 2 fly combo with clip on weights depending on current speed.
Cast plenty far for Nc mountains. Euro nymph it!
Works like a charm.
Use aa smaller float like those made by Trout Magic. Also sometimes a small spli shot between the float and the fly helps keep the lower line fro fouling with the float
Great advice! I will try it. Thanks
In that depth of water use a small spinner like an eighth style bumble bee rooster tail. Bobbers are for long casts in lakes to get it waay out
There like in the middle of the lake . I've found smaller rivers work best with wordens rooster tail or mepps spinners. Good luck!
Nice river , I’ve used a clear casting bubble with some success but I prefer a fly rod . Good luck , set the hook brother
I need to try that.
Or in the state I guess it depends on climate and stuff too and elevation but here in Utah it's best to use a spin reel bubble on a fly in the fall. Like a tungsten bead head nymph just dead drifted down
Use a clear bobber.. works for me!!
They make those floats in clear plastic instead of the red and white color. If the fish are being scared from the float, maybe try the clear color. Please continue this experiment, I am very interested in the outcome. Thanks.
I need to try that.
I've had pretty good luck using a Trout Magnet EZ Float and the Trout Magnet jig. No problem with tangles. Casts well with an ultralight outfit. Catches trout and many other species. Wonder how it would work with wet or dry flies?!?
It is supposed to work with everything. Lol... I'm sticking to my fly rod
Been fishing this way for 60 years on lakes. I've used it on big rivers and small creeks too. IMHO, the bubble you used is wrong. I always used a clear bobber. You cast slightly up river of the target, get the bubble to be upstream of the fly so the flly is presented before the bubble. I've had success with both sliding bubble above a bobber stop and clip on bubbles.
Others have reported good success using a bubble on the end of the line with the fly on a dropper. Never tried that.
Also, loked to me like your ultra light was toooooo light for that bobber.
I need to try the clear one. I bought this one because of the easy way to attach and move it on the line... but clearly it spooks the fish!
I grew up fishing flies like that in Colorado. I used a clear bubble. Mostly in lakes but had good success. I always use a Rapala lure in the rivers in Colorado and always out fish the fly fisherman.
I need to try the clear.
You wanna use the clear bubble. Just gotta keep an eye on it. Its all about finding that perfect run of water to bubble fly. I caught several bass on the bubble fly in ponds as well! There's a flaw in every rig and this one is no exception. I like that im the only person doing it when i go fishing.
Thanks for the tip!
People on the coosa river on lake Jordan have for, 60 years or longer, used a weighted plunking cork in front of a white chicken hackle fly to catch stripe and spotted bass that are hitting on top of the water. To this day I still use that rig and out fish all the fancy bass fishermen with their fancy lures 👌🏻
Tried and true!
I use a leader 2foot or shorter the fish don't Kerr about the float what I use plastic or foam bobbers even I use the smallest then if it doesn't work I go bigger. Smaller the better 🤔 just enough to float that's it. And color I think color mattress. The fly fishing bobbers I like the ones that get pinned on. Ya it will be very light like even if using half gram weigh or less by the bobber. Find what works for you but light is the game and small package on the end of line 🎣 just got some good Bass fishing for the first time with my son and grandkids. Good fishing video my son told me about.
thank you for the tips!
They make clear barbers
Thanks for the tip!
I use clear water bobbers in lakes with flies and 6 foot fluorocarbon leaders and catch a lot of large and small mouth basses, sunfish, and perch. I haven't tried this setup on trout streams yet.
I’ve had great experiences with the clear ones but for bait either worms, eggs or power bait
I have been a fly angler since the mid 70s. Prior to that I would use an ultralight spinning rod and reel with 4 to 6 lb test, and a classic red/white 1/4 ounce Daredevel spoon, a Mepps or Roostertail spinner and did quite well in streams. But in Alpine lakes a small 1/4 ounce "Torpedo Float" with a fly at the end of about 36" of "tippet" would always catch fish when using lures wasn't producing. In fact I cannot recall ever not catching fish with that rig in high lakes. I would cast, let it set awhile, then just twitch for a retrieve. I still occasionally bring a UL spinning rod on trips to high lakes to reach out farther than I can with a western fly or Tenkara rod.
I need to give it another shot!
Not sure about fly fishing with the Cadence Ultra Light but it makes a great Crappy rod. Thanks for turning me onto Cadence rods and reels. I now have two Cadence rods and reels in my fishing arsenal.
I love mine as well. Great quality for a bargain price!
I use a clear plastic bubble in Sierra lakes above 8,000 ft and it's very effective.
Hi I have used this setup for year's. I use a 4-5 ft. leader below the bobber. You have to be very fluent when you cast or you spin the bobber and tangle the line.
Thanks for the advice!
I use a small clear bubble and my leader is at least 6 feet. It could be the length of leader, color of bubble, type of fly or just water conditions. You never know but fly fishing with a spin rod works great!
I'm going to try clear this fall!
I trout fish this way. The set up I use depends on the distance to cast and over head room. Large area where I can cast 30 /50 yards is 7ft. St.Croix trout series , Pfluger Supreme 50, 8lb. Fire line braid. A “clear 1.5in slip float half full of water. Note this is the order I use , only my opinion. First a rubber bobber stop, slip main line through the bobber . Next tie on a swivel , I use VMC rolling swivel size 7. For your leader material, just like fly flshing needs to be heavy enough to turn over the fly you’re using. Lengths depend on where you are fishing. The two I use most are 4lb floro Spyder Wire, normal low cost flora. Next is Rio 5lb-5x. floro. I don’t really like tapered leaders. Length usually 6-7ft when possible.Your float needs to have some freedom to help reduce snags and help with twist, so slide your stop above about half inch. Slide through is best, I tried many types of floats. I like FireLine braid it floats over some snags and you can see it . A little gap between the stop and swivel will help when they take your bug, then have some resistance against the float. Excellent feel with braid, good leader and guality rod. Same set up with 6ft St.Croix and 6lb. Fire line. I mostly use streamers and nymphs size 10 to 16. I tie 99% myself. I have tied foam floating dry flies. One fish caught and done, get slimy. Since you’re not really false casting hard to dry out, even with treatment. My opinion droppers don’t work well for me. They spin around in flight. I do sometimes tie a trailer off the hook bend. Spin floats by Eagle Claw, Mustad and South Bend work.
True another float. I tried hookless lures, not as smooth. I almost without exception get hits on the float itself, probably targeting the black swivel. I guess it looks like an ant ....good luck.
T
I REALLY appreciate this guidance. I head back to the mountains in late April and will give it a try! I think one of the key things you point out is to use the clear bobber.
i get a large amount of brown trout that hit my black swivel when im spinning with a mepp on i always fancied the thought it was an ant lol
I would say you needed a considerably longer leader and a clear bubble couldn't hurt. I imagine simply using a longer leader would have produced on this trip
I'll try that. Thanks
We use the fly/bobber combo for cutthroat trout in Utah. Usually we do this in lakes.
Years ago I bought (but never used) one of those extra-long, telescoping poles that don't even use a reel, just line tied to the tip. I'm thinking I might try that in the small creeks next year.
You need to! That is called Tenkara fishing and it is deadly on a small stream!
Yes sir. One thing about NC streams; when they’re freshly stocked you have to bring your own rock to stand on. Be safe⚓️
depends on the dh I have one 5 minutes from my house and I've had stock day all to myself last couple years
You need a weight on top of the fly,16-20 inch and reduce the size of the bobber.
find the smallest bubble float you can (ultra light spin rods can cast amazingly!) you need the leader long enough to almost snag the riverbed, (no snag,, less fish) cast like a 'checz style' drift, should be quite effective mate!
Thanks!
When using a bobber I like to use a floating fly that way you see the splash near your bobber and set the hook.
Great advice! Thanks
Do you have to use clear water bobbers, or does any streamlined float work?
Fish do not know what a float looks like. As long as it is far enough from the fly, anything should work.
Clear casting bobber. Especially in high pressure.
I'll try that next, thanks
The problem might be your "bubble". It looks more like a giant high-visibility bobber. I have a couple of casting bubbles that are much smaller, transparent and colorless like an actual bubble, and much more subtle. Maybe try with something like that.
I agree!
First off... use a clear plastic bubble. Second... have some confidence in your ability to catch fish on this rig. Third... practice.
I've been awful curious about this lately myself got to find a way to do it.
Try casting a side cast instead of a over head cast doesn’t tangle as easy, and a clear bubble works better
Will do
I have often wondered if something like that would work. Have you had any more experience with this type of set up?
Thanx for the video. It was fun to watch either way.
No other experience. Some folks recommended I use a lighter casting bubble. I'll have to try that.
Don't use such a large casting bubble for starters---it "does" spook fish. Armed with a decent spinning rod and reel, I've used a small Thingamabobber and at the end of my line I tied a Floating Popper Dropper w a short trailer line tied to a tiny artificial floating fly (bream size fly) attached to catch Trout up at Boone, North Carolina. I've also used the same Thingamabobber but used a tiny weight with a cricket for bait. Both situations, I caught Trout by my second cast. The creek there was very clear and shallow. As a matter of fact, I could see the Trout lurking in the pockets of creek water as my "bait" floated above the Trout. They hit the bait. Yes, I could have used a fly rod and reel (I like the Martin Automatic Fly Reel), but because of the tight foliage around, and the fact that I didn't have waders at the time, I fished from the bank. The Popper Dropper and Thingamabobber together provide the needed "weight" to project the artificial fly into the desired target. Of course, that Popper Dropper also interests large Trout, Bass, and Crappie as well.
Great advice! Thanks!
Try a small split shot about a foor under the float
I will. thanks for the tip!
There are many people widely successful. I would recommend keeping at it just like anything it'll come overtime. If you are being genuine.
Good advice!
I use UL spin rod and reel with 4 lb test and trout magnet with a trout magnet float and have very productive days
I have some of those floats I use with my fly rod. I'll try them. Thanks!
What color trout magnet do u use for clear water?
Take the bubble float and flies off and stick a #00 Mepps spinner or micro spoon on
lol! That's what I grew up fishing with for trout!
Use a clear bobber
Me and my dad used to do that on the Klamath River in California
Good morning action man
If you use a clear bubble it will work better
I need to try that next
I never did this. But a friend of mine did the experiment using a little reel (like yours or smaller) in his fly rod (with the bobber in line and then my friend used a weighted fly or a removable split shot 5 inches before a dry fly (some of his experiments randomly worked in a very surprising way)
Throwing (or casting) sideways like using a scythe at waist level or higher, thanks to the length of the rod allowed him to deposit the rig from a distance without curling (or twisting) ...and holding the line 2 or 3 inches before the fly using the rod like a slingshot sometimes...
I think there is a lot of field to research. Good initiative.
He found sometimes it worked against all odds when nobody else had results with traditional Fly Fishing (and also viceversa and we end laughing on him...because his crazy ideas)
I would make sure using fluorocarbon or some invisible line in the last section (he uses 'amnesia" those days, more than 20 years ago)
Nice research! You always trying to go beyond! (we learn a lot from you, thanks a lot!!)
Of Course I gave you a HUMONGOUS LIKE!!
Regards.
Fred.
Great points... it does need more testing. I'll try the clear bubble when I go trout fishing again in April.
Wait just a minute! At 2:08, what do you mean tangles don't occur when you're fly fishing? Are you kidding? LOL
lol - usually a rare event. This mess occurred quickly!
I would love to see slow motion of a tangle forming. It always amazes me how fast it happens.
That would be pretty cool - it would let us see what we did wrong to cause it.
I'm horny
I've had success with the clear bubble and fly.
I need to try that.
esn over bobber and indicator fishing for me personally
Use a trout magnet bobber
I use them on my fly rod
Those bubbles work. I need a new one. The surgical tubing in mine is bad the bubble is so old.
The Nantahala is beautiful, we travel that way to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Maybe it’s your 8# line???
It could be. I think I was using Ardent Gliss - it has the diameter of 2 lb or so.
@@KayakhacksFishing probably not the line then. Ok, thanks
You need to get yourself a clear bobber.
Yep! I agree!
Works great for bass and panfish. Not so great for trout. Better off using a cane pole or flyrod for trout in my experience.
you just dont have any experience. ive caught 100s if trout browns, brooks and rainbows you need some split shot to get the fly down.close to the bottem then bang.
Thanks! Appreciate it!
That is not or nothing to do with fly fishing that is as bad as bait fishing
I disagree. Using a spin rod with a bubble could get folks to transition to using a fly rod once they see how fun it is to use flies instead of spinners.
@@KayakhacksFishing casting a fly rod is fly fishing all your talking about is using different lures
True
Use a water bobber.
I think that works best
