    Something my instructor always told me is that you can play this piece. you can show the technique and you can get it up to speed. fantastic. but the real deal is when you give away the beat for your audience and groove with it. It shouldn't sound like a big mess, the accents are there to give away a rhythm, with the added rolls and diddles and flams in between to make it interesting, or spice it up, and show off your technique. i listened to this and many other renditions and can never really keep track of the beat, even when its slowed. i think thats something people tend to miss.

      Totally agree. It was well executed, but the pulse disappeared more than once. Not really my cup of tea when that happens.

      I can feel you. Ive played this one 20 years ago in the age of 15. It was hard to learn, and this master drums it way better than me - but I am missing kinda a "soul" behind this

    I love the "hum" produced by the shell and heads, it slowly comes on then subsides then back again. Great solo.

    This is probably the most dynamically accurate performance of this solo, which makes it sound so much better. And his rolls are extremely clean. Awesome solo.

    Glad to see it was mostly played to tempo (136bpm). That's what makes Tornado difficult. Although this version seems to be missing the flam-tap section.. Perhaps for brevity? I might have missed it..

    I did this solo last year for solo ensemble, but I only got up to 115 bpm, not 130

    Amazing solo. Can anyone explain why the “e” of 1 on measure one is notated as a 16th note triplet roll but it’s played as regular 16th notes?

    • @joekugelblitz4144
      @joekugelblitz4144 5 месяцев назад

      It´s not written as a triplet... it´s written as six strokes over the duration of a dotted eigth note. Note the two additional beams on the dotted 8th notes, they are an abbrevation for 32nd notes.

    First off, I can't play this solo at tempo, and I may never be able to. That being said, in my opinion, this is well played in most respects. My main concern being the ritard into the backsticking section. Thats clearly not written into the solo. Also, why was the flam section between letters "E" and "F" omitted? As this is a Vic Firth sponsored video, I expected it to be complete and not a personal arrangement. Maybe Dr. Wooton will put up a video of him playing it.

    The problem for me is that at 130 bpm, it kinda turns to mush. There is some great patterns in this solo but they get blurred. Play it a little slower, play as written and play all repeats. I played this as a Senior in HS in 1975 and blew away the judges and audience. 130, is as written, but musically, i think is suffers. Trad grip looks better in the back sticking section. Cheers to Mitch!

    Ok, I will say what everyone is likely thinking: there are *lots* of mistakes in here, and an entire section was omitted. I speak as someone who has not uploaded a recording to RUclips, so take my comments with a grain of salt, but...you have got to be kidding me!
