    From an engineering perspective, the guitar neck joint is designed to handle tremendous amount of tension from the strings such that the "stress" from the guitar strap connected to the headstock is negligible. It's like recommending removing the spare tire from a car because of the added weight even though the car is designed to carry a lot more weight than that. My opinion is if the guitar does not come with a nut at the heel, then I would leave the guitar in its original condition by not screwing an after-market nut into the heel.

      Agree. By his logic, playing open “cowboy chords” puts stress on the neck too.

      maybe don't play if its too windy out.... actually full moon might theoretically have more gravity during those times. i was joking with the too windy comment but that extra gravity during full moon is for real

      ok that was pretty jerky think for me to say.. Sorry about that Randy. Just got a new guitar and it did not have a button so I hung the strap on the end. horrible. could not reach anything. going to the shop to get a button.

      It's functionally superior to add a neck heel strap button, and it looks better too. This is a subjective opinion, of course...I buy guitars to play, not as investments I intend to sell later for a profit. Either way, I don't believe a properly installed strap button, in the correct location, will effect resale value. I recently bought a new Martin M-36 and had the neck heel strap button pre-ordered and waiting for it to arrive. No regrets.

    My strap has been tied on like that forever. I hate it there because the guitar keeps wanting to slide back around under my right arm. By the time I'm done playing for a couple hours, my right shoulder is killing me because I have to keep pulling it back to stay in alignment with the guitar. I never considered the added stress I have been putting on the neck joints. I purchased a strap button to save my right shoulder but I see now I'm also saving my guitar. Thanks Randy.

    Well, Neil Young attaches at the headstock. Maybe priorities are different for harmonica players, but he's kind of famous for playing same Martin for years ;-) One thing you don't mention is that headstock mount stops the acoustic's tendency for the neck to drop down if not supported.

    Good tip Randy. I never understood why some guitars don’t come with the upper strap buttons. I think that a Martin D‑42 should have come with one installed considering what they are charging for them.

      I couldn't agree more! it makes me wonder if they are shooting for repair work sooner than later, every guitar should come with both strap buttons installed, especially ones that cost this much. thanks for tuning in brother.

    I've seen musicians, for example: Stephen Stills, install a strap button right smack dab in the middle of their heel cap, on the back there. I've always preferred having a strap button on my guitars exactly where you installed it on this particular guitar. Your top notch in my book,
    man!

    • @RandySchartiger

      I've seen them installed in the middle of the heel cap too, that would make the guitar hang outwards and down away from the player it would seem, plus it looks funny. different strokes I guess lol

    I just got a Washburn guitar 🎸 that was made in 1996. And it only has the button on the bottom. I ordered two buttons and a new strap. From eBay they are on the way.
    My other three guitars 🎸 all have both buttons 😳 I just figured it was a sure thing to have both.

    A steel string acoustic guitar with light gauge strings exerts about 160 lbs of pressure. Attaching a strap to the head-stock to an 8 lb guitar has no measurable effect on it's tuning even if you rest your arm on it. The only valid reason to put a strap button on the neck heel is to get it out of the way. Call Martin and Taylor and they'll tell you the same. Their high end models don't come with neck heel strap buttons. My 12-string gits would do a neck dive if the straps were attached to just the body and I stopped holding the neck.

    Interesting... what is your perspective? A musician or a luthier? What occurs to me is that Richard Thompson - a pretty useful and very experienced guitarist, both electric and acoustic, plays his Lowden (hardly a budget instrument) with the strap attached at ghe headstock. Each to their own... but I'd be disinclined to be so dismissive of people who do things differently...

    Just wanted clarification why would a prominent guitar manufacturer With millions of dollars and deeply invested in the longterm playability of their product send out guitars from factory without a second strap button on the top, presumably to have the strap run to behind the nut, which if what you said is true would compromise the guitar. It just doesn't make sense to me.

  • @cymoncyrado2879
    @cymoncyrado2879 7 лет назад +1

    Damn I wish we lived in the same neighborhood LOL... yeah when I was a kid I strapped up my guitars like that because it was convenient and the guitars I bought didn't come with any button except at the tail but then after a few years realised the guitar would hang in a more comfortable place to play and gave me better access over the entire neck when strapped to the heel..plus neck bends worked better....never even thinking back then about the stress and crap. Eventually somewhere along the way I noticed that guitars strapped to the headstock would tend to have higher action over time and bridge lift or often cracking in the finish around the heel and generally more stress....nowadays they have those guitar stands that can hold it for you but that just doesn't seem natural heh.

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  7 лет назад

      exactly! action will raise sooner and many other problems will start to develop over time and depending on how often and long a guitar is strapped on this way. I believe it's the very reason some manufacturers only put one strap button on, they know someone will get repair work sooner than not.

      it wouldn't surprise me if companies sold that little strap connector because they "know" the guitar will be back in sooner than later for repairs, just my thoughts. Willies guitar has been repaired so many times I doubt he cares. thanks for watching mate! cheers!

  • @mdew24

    I always wondered why an acoustic guitar DID NOT come with a strap button on the Heel of the neck from the factory. I am 54 years old and have come across MANY more guitars that did not come with this from the factory. I always thought that there must be a reason NOT to put a strap button on the heel. I figured that it must weaken the joint having a screw in the heel.

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  7 лет назад

      exactly my thoughts too, you'd think those companies would put a strap button there since they put one at the tail block usually, however I've seen several that didn't put a strap button on the tail block either. hard to say what their logic is.

    • @cymoncyrado2879
      @cymoncyrado2879 7 лет назад

      When you did see a button on the heel it was at the base on the surface facing back at you in that little triangle...an easy pull off and drop problem like they didn't understand gravity heh...musta been aesthetic value. To anybody that has ever watched their axe hit the ground hard....not a good deal.

    • @mdew24
      @mdew24 7 лет назад

      The hole strips out pretty easy running it strait from the bottom of the heel towards the fretboard, Not only that but the weight is in the front of the guitar pulling the strap of the button easier, but then again running a screw through the side of the heel weakens the heel. Many cheaper guitars will split there anyway. So what is a man to do? Wrap the strap around the neck like Porter Wagoner i guess......

    • @mdew24
      @mdew24 7 лет назад

      I just envisioned a solution. Quick Randy Patent it before it gets out....A guitar sling.... Like a net that cradles the guitar..........Never mind....still too heavy in front and the guitar will fall out.......Back to the drawing board......

      @RandySchartiger  7 лет назад

      I've noticed a lot of people will rest their entire arm on the top side of their guitar when strapped on and not playing, this adds even more stress. lol dropping this guitar is like falling off the top of a house, my son helped me do some work on top of the house and I told him, keep your chiat together, falling off the house is NOT and option, and neither is dropping this guitar lol cheers mate, have a great 4th of July weekend!

    Randy I've always wondered why the factory doesn't install them. I figured they wanted the strap tied to the peghead. My first acoustic lived like that for a long time. Somewhere along the way I put a button on. Never liked the strap tied to the peghead.

    • @RandySchartiger

    Check the "Bob Dylan "My Back Pages 30th Anniversary" video. Everyone on stage is using a strap tied to the headstock. I see pictures of very good musicians carrying their expensive guitars by the headstock, putting all the stress possible on the neck and the neck to body joint. I admit it does look pretty folksy and cool to carry that way but not for me. I carry my guitar (be it my Martin or my Yamaha) with a grip on the neck right at the neck to body joint,strongest place on the guitar. I also shield the body of the guitar with my body when walking with it as much as possible.

      It's better to slowly drill a pilot hole first before screwing in the strap button. If not you risk splitting the wood.

    I wear my strap this "odd" way. i play bass guitar, hollow body electric. i added another strap point to the back of neck, just past the 1st fret as obviously ya dont want hand interference. this position lets the guitar player adjust the guitar so that the body of the guitar is not so centered on the torso, and consiquently the fret board closer to the body instead of way out in space to the left. i find the position 100x more comfortable.
    for a guitar that has the neck bolted to the body, as my guitar does, and most electrics do, usually by 4 big bolts, thats plenty strong to support the guitar neck.
    I do agree for that if the neck is glued to the body, that strapping at the end of the neck is a piss poor idea, as explained in this video.

      sometimes humidity (or lack of) will cause a hump or fall away, but if it's too bad you can pull all the frets and level the fretboard itself, you probably will need to make your fret slots a little deeper but this works.

      I’ve seen other videos where this is discussed. It seems to be fine as far as weight on the headstock but what you have to worry is keeping it’s humidity regulated. You don’t want it to dry up. What little i know, I would say buy a laminate guitar to hang on the wall and keep the Martin in its case with a humidifier.

    The weight of the guitar is nothing. That is no problem at all. Because the guitar is only 8 lb/2 points. But, the weight of a heavy arm pressing down and the force of heavy strumming down to make 6 180 pound strings going down. That would do damage overtime. Thanks for the video Randy.
