I really respect how you never pull any punches, even when it comes to the company that just quoted you in their presentation. That's why I always trust your opinions and reviews
And he didnt mention anything about missing 120hz or 90hz on iphone 15. He never said one negative in the previous video. Marques could easily mention why even iphone 15 exist when 13 and 14 already here 😂. And what about iphone getting green line over the update??? He hasnt mentioned it anywhere. Apple definitely paid him for a while not to speak of anything. Now marques need to earn back many of our respect just because of his recent atitude.
The Apple Watch Ultra was meant to be advertised towards fitness enthusiasts who were already using brands like Garmin. However, Garmin never updates their watches every year and those customers are used to that. The Apple Watch Ultra should get updates every 3 years in my opinion. We don't usually upgrade our Garmin unless there is a huge update since they are meant to last for years.
each year there is someone with one that is 3 years old, it is the same with the phones. i had the 6 never got the 7,8,9 etc. Jumped to 12, but having each year a new model you have at the time of your upgrade the best version. otherwise if you are 2 year into a model needing to change, you either get something that in another year will get a major upgrade or wait another year.
Good for you, but what about people who are looking to buy a new watch? Will they buy an older watch if there are better or alternate ones with newer features/powerful/longer lasting batteries in them?
It’s marketing to include those enthusiasts, not exclusively for those enthusiasts. Same as MacBook “Pro” and iPhone “Pro”, it’s marketed for pros but it’s also designed for normal people cuz that’s the vast majority of customers for all these categories. Apple always wants products that appeal to everyone, and an “Ultra” model that doesn’t have the latest features of the Series 9 would be pretty unappealing to most Apple consumers.
@@officialhideyo Well the Ultra 2 doesn’t have significantly better battery life or offers anything new in sensors. The water resistance wasn’t increased either. Previously I purchased a Garmin Fénix 5 despite the 7 being available at the time. It was since it was going to be a huge update from the original Garmin Vivoactive either way.
This is why we love MKBHD. The company sends him products to review, and he could easily tell you every product is worth the upgrade. It would probably equate to even more money for him, but instead he chooses honesty and tells you the real answers. Kudos to you and your team for making the best tech content out there.
As a nurse, apple watches are super helpful. Theres an app that helps with calculating a patient's respiratory rate by tapping the watch with each breath then itll vibrate once done so you won't have to keep your eyes on their chest and on a clock. Another reason I got one is getting notifications from other staff in case of emergencies or if a patient is requesting something. Just a random post for those in healthcare if you're deciding on getting an apple watch.
@@MsK4YY Ah thank you but it doesn’t work on my Series 9, just crashed right away when I try to open it. Looks like the developer had abandon it, last update was 3 years ago.
@@roa5359 it’s just used to count how many times you’re breathing in and out for 1 min for documentation. The app helps you by counting the min for you while you tap the watch. Without the watch, you have to look at the clock while looking at the patients chest rise and fall. Of course, if there’s something wrong then ‘as a nurse’ you don’t bother with the breathing count and go straight to helping the patient as it would be very obvious that something is wrong. The tracking is just a routine thing to do for our notes. BP and oximeter machines are checked and approved for working regularly.
Same, series 4->Ultra 2. It’s a dope watch. Additionally if you run the red night mode all day you get really impressive battery life. I get 3-4 days with the night mode on and the display actually looks pretty cool all red.
In addition to the AssistiveTouch on the older watches, there is a slightly newer option in accessibility called "Quick Actions" which is exactly the double tap feature for most apps. It doesn't have the sometimes needless clutter of the other gestures. It is just the double tap to answer/end calls and some other primary buttons. Only difference is that it does not advance It also works just fine on my Series 7. I thought the S9 would allow you to do it while you haven't raised to wake, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Right on! I was trying out assistive touch on the Ultra. Wasn’t a fan. Good to know this feature exists. I just enabled it. Since I only wanted to be able to answer calls, cancel timers etc.
Heck, it even works on my S5 Apple Watch. I can’t believe I didn’t know it existed all this time, only found out after hearing about it in the S9 announcement.
Yeah, I use Quick Touch on my Ultra S1 and have for months. I do have to be fairly deliberate about it, but I'd rather that than risk false taps. I never got Assistive touch to work properly, the clenches just didnt work well for me, but Quick Actions has been just fine for answering/ending calls, dismissing notifications, playing/pausing music. etc.
But then they wont make money lol…. 😂 laptops and ipads dont sell every year… only phones and watches do… thats how they make money for dumb shit like vision pro and cheese grader… and those expensive wheels for the macbook 😂
I think phones and watches and tablets and computers would be fine being released every 2 or 3 years if we are all being honest, and I think that would be a good thing.
I like knowing that whenever I need to / choose to update, there is a reasonably new version to update to, even if year on year it is just a spec bump. Otherwise it’s a pain trying to judge what Apple’s release cycle is going to be, and tying that with your own upgrade cycle. I don’t think anyone is likely to be upgrading their watch yearly - but this lets them upgrade at whatever pace they like without feeling like they might be getting an old product. I’ll be upgrading this year because a family member wants my old one. Series 7 to Series 9 will not be a huge upgrade, but I’m happy enough with it.
Upgraded from my Series 5. Definitely worth it too me. So much faster. Bigger. In love with the keyboard to type in lieu of the swiping with a finger. My battery health on my series 5 was at 85%. So it didn’t last a day. The Ultra 2 definitely last me 3 days easily. I don’t regret it. Love the upgrade.
I was tempted to spend the $800 and get an Apple Watch ultra but after the new watchOS 10 update came out I’ve changed my mind. The new update looks great, my Apple Watch Series 7 finally feels like it’s worth the money I paid for it.
I absolutely hated the update the first day because it made a couple of gestures harder to pull of for me but it’s growing on me now, so I can see where you’re coming from. My SE looks great. Wait for the 10/ultra 3?
I have a series 3 as well. I’m leaning towards the Ultra 2. Need to decide tonight. I like the 9 stainless steal but it’s not going to replace my nicer timepieces in formal settings so it’s between the aluminum 9 and Ultra 2.
I still have my OG 3 I bought back in 2017(?) with my iPhone 8. No idea how the hell this thing is still working AND lasting a whole day on battery. I’ve wanted to upgrade but.. it still works. Sure it’s slow as hell sometimes but it still does what I need it to.
I've been using double-tap on my series 7 watch with WatchOS 10.0 to play/pause and dismiss notifications. Love it! It's so typical Apple to tell us we need the newest device to get a feature they've clearly tested by hiding it behind an Accessibility panel.
Exactly I used to use that feature on it as well, but the people that didn’t know should feel like they were robbed without a gun for buying the newer models “with tap feature”
Love your videos. I actually upgraded to a new Ultra 2 yesterday because my previous watch was over 4 years old. It was time to get something new. There are a lot of things I love about this watch, including it doesn’t weigh a lot at all. Thank you so much for the wonderful videos.
As far back as series 5, double tap has existed as an accessibility feature. It’s more limited but definitely further limits how much of an upgrade the series 9 is.
They only released an ultra 2 so that the series 9 doesn’t compete with it. It won’t be ultra if it has the same brightness as the series 9 and no double tap. So they had to also give it those features so it is still “ultra”
I truly appreciate your reviews. You always stick to the fundamentals why people watch, and your reviews are very honest and straightforward. No frills. Please keep doing what you are doing. You are leading this revolution. Thank you.
Thank you for this. I was seriously considering updating my Series 5, but there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to do so yet. A battery bump, or glucose monitoring would be a game changer for me.
@@Passque666 No, there are already sensors that can do so through the skin, just not small enough yet to put into a watch, but Apple has been working on it for some time. There are plenty of articles about it if you care to google.
I've basically been using this double tap feature for a while on Series 7 via Accessibility > Quick Actions. I'm wondering if they're planning on disabling this on older devices so that can still call it exclusive for newer models? Or maybe they're only improving on it for new devices
I have the series 6. It's stood up to the test of time and no need to upgrade personally. Now if the 10 has that glucometer that people were hinting at, I'll immediately get that.
Yeah, you and a billion other people. “Glucometer” ain’t coming anytime soon if at all. The weight of the entire pharmaceutical industry has been trying to crack non-invasive glucose monitoring for decades. If Apple’s (rumored) 30 person team (lol) pulls that off, you can go ahead and add another $trillion to their market cap. It’s almost ridiculous that people think that this is some add-on feature that is right around the corner.
@@jontannerto be fair Apple is bigger than almost all of those companies combined, and they attract the smartest people on the planet. Not inconceivable that they could figure it out within some acceptable degree of accuracy given a massive budget and however much time they need
@@jontannerthere’s already smart glucometers in the market already. I know because my grandma has one. She scans the patch on her arm and it displays the levels on her phone. It’s only a matter of time before an Apple Watch adapts this feature. Apple has already stated it’s in the works buts need more testing to release this feaure.
5:44 Marques its not an Apple specific feature, the finger gestures are available in Samsung Watches with OneUi 5 even for watch 4 under the name called Universal Gestures and they are pretty accurate
After the release of Apple Watch Ultra 1, I expected all its weaknesses to be improved in the next Apple Watch Ultra 2. Instead, we got the same watch with minor changes that no one asked for. The lack of significant improvement in battery life is a huge gift from Apple to Garmin, which has gained an extra year to introduce esim cards and further improvements to epix and fenix
While you're comment isn't necessarily wrong, I'd still argue that Garmin's interfaces are absolute dog shit compared to Apple, which is what happens when you trade refresh rate, responsiveness and overall performance for battery life. Yeah, you'll get multi-day battery life, but frame dropping on a $1000+ Fenix/Epix watch is laughably bad.
People still don't understand the fact apple develop few changes to their producs targeting new customers instead of current customers. That's why there is litttle to no changes. So it is not meant for current customers unless you have not upgraded since 6 years ago
Been using the gestures on my Samsung Watch 4 Classic since the update to One UI Watch 5 recently. Works very well. Already had lift to wake for years, but a quick double twist of the wrist activated gestures, then you click your thumb and forefinger together once to move forward, twice to go back, and do a motion where all 4 fingers touch your thumb like a grab with fingertips to activate. I use it alot lately, as a person who uses a cane and it's easier to just use gestures while walking or active. Takes some getting used to, but I think it might take off once everyone knows about it.
I was going to comment the same! Got the newest update hours and this is now working on my Samsung Galaxy 4 classic. Available now, not later this year. 😁
@NikhilJena they do tell tbf, you probably just didn't notice at the time or looked for it. What baffles me is that tech reviewers don't know it...really makes it hard to value their opinion.
I also immediately use this feature when it comes to my watch 5 right 4 days after the Apple Watch show it off. It's very helpful features that we can control our watch with pinch, double pinch, make fist and they are very customizable
Wanted to get the ultra last year, but I passed on it. Finally decided to make the upgrade this year from my series 4, definitely think it was worth it! The AOD, larger battery, better screen & brightness, and more sensors made me feel it was time to upgrade, but mainly because my series 4 doesn't even last 5 hours on a full charge (yet somehow my moms regular series 3 lasts here for two days, go figure... probably because it is wifi only...)
My 5 year old series 4 still holds for day and a half, even though battery health is at 81%. When it was new it held for 2 whole days. As long as it holds for one whole waking day (~16h) i wont be upgrading.
@@ConceptNull my series 4 battery capacity is at 96% 8pm last night it was 100% charged, 8am today, sitting on the counter not even used during the night, 38%. I feel like it should last way longer there's no way it's at 96% capacity
I also have a Series 4 (cellular and wifi but I dont have cellular enabled). Mine lasts the entire day still (well about 20 -24 hours) which I expected to be much worse by now many years later. I do feel like the newer ones likely have better accuracy with workouts/heart rate, etc. but I'm not sure if it justifies enough to upgrade. It does help to hear you believe it was worth it!
@unholydonuts honestly the improvements year over year were so non existent since the series 4 “redesign” I just didn’t see the point until the ultra came out last year
@@ViciousFirearms I just realized there’s a couple ways to do it. Easiest is to go Settings>Accessibility>Quick Actions>On (I also recommend you choose Full Appearance for a day or so just to see what each action will do when you double tap, then switch to minimal when you feel comfortable)
Still using my Series 4. Battery health currently at 87%. WatchOS 10 really seems to drain the battery a lot more than v9 did. Ultra 2 is pretty tempting, but I’ll probably wait to see what’s up with the Ultra 3 whenever that one comes out.
That's the thing about tech these daya. You'd really have to be creative in order to differentiate your product year on year. We've reached a point where the spec bump in hardware is the more "tangible" change yet a lot of the work has been done to optimize the silicon today. But that is also what paves the way to better optimized software, more complicated algorithms (running locally on the device) and features later down the line.
Still holding on to my series 5. Battery life is suffering a bit but overall still good. Hoping for a new design next year, for which I'm actually kind of hopeful because it's gonna be series 10/X.
dude just upgrade. there isn't going to be a new design so just get over it or leave the ecosystem. stability, consistency and iterative hardware updates are the name of Apple's game and they ain't changing anytime soon. accept it now and save yourself a lot of heartache.
I think this is the way it’s supposed to be. I still have a series 5 and same, battery starting to struggle but to make it to the X or beyond justifies the prices of these items.
My bf bought me the 9, and before evening syncing it, I came to watch your video. Now I feel bad that he got me the 9. I could’ve had my 5 for a little longer.
Yeah i have the 5 too, I considered getting the ultra two. But then when I found out that I had to pay a $300 down payment, I quickly came to my senses and realize hey, there’s nothing wrong with my series 5 at all I’m simply upgrading out of vanity.
The crazy thing about smart technology is that no matter how impressive a released device is, it just takes one year for it to be overshadowed by a new version.
Great review. I’m rocking an Apple Watch Series 4 and have been wanting to upgrade to an Ultra for a while now. It seems like the spec bump is minimal, but still may be a big improvement over my Series 4. Thanks!
Double tap is a good feature for people using electric wheelchair because then I can use the watch without let off the joystick. Great video as always! 💯
As someone with an XR and no Apple Watch, I am super excited to get the pink phone and watch tomorrow. Like Marques said, it’s a good update for people with older/no Apple Watch. Most average people don’t upgrade phones and watches every year. Love the vids though, keep them coming!
I initially had the first-gen Ultra, and I ended up getting the Ultra 2 just because I had $830ish bucks of trade-in credit between my first-gen Ultra and an old laptop. I only had to pay like $13 out of pocket, which was nice.
My Garmin Venu 2 has a beautiful circular AMOLED display, stellar fitness tracking, and a 9 day battery life. I think I'd keep this 3 year old watch over any Ultra right now
I see these things and every year go 'yep, Garmin is still miles ahead for me'. Impressed by the carbon neutral product. The rest makes no sense. Garmin Fenix all day long (and the next day, and the day after that and many more days without charging)
People who say that don’t quite understand that Apple Watch is a different kind of watch. It does more than a fitness watch, which is what your garmins are so don’t even start comparing them.
@@TySPAID I’m sure for many that’s the right watch. For me who wants notifications and stock trading tracking or flawless integration with phone apps or just smooth ui it’s just not possible with pure fitness watches, they aren’t made for it.
Still got and wear my series 3 daily! Got a few dents, scratches and nicks in the metal and some scratches in the glass, but still working well. Tempted by an upgrade though mostly for the brighter & bigger screens and the better health-tracking.
Series 3 to Ultra 2, i absolutely love it! Bought it along this past weekend, display is suuuper nice and bright. Battery is so good too, I’ve only charged it once from 40% when I first got it on Friday the 19th. I had been debating on getting it.
The thing about samsung that I genuinely hate about them is that their products have really amazing but somehow don't market them correctly they'll choose the extreme already-great feature as the main talking point in thier marketing Eg. Camera MP, battery, screen, and etc
Double Pinch is available to my Series 5 since the first beta of WatchOS 10. Definitely not exclusive to the newer models or S9. And it works great by the way.
the feature is available in the accessibility section of my galaxy watch4 classic. The sensors and processing might be better on the new apple watch, but it's not a new feature >_
My theory is that they made this into a feature now because they need to collect the data to improve hand gesture recognition leading up to the Vision Pro launch.
The Galaxy watch 4 and 5 actually already has double tap, if you turn on the feature in the dexterity tab of accessibility settings you can shake your wrist twice then use tapping your thumb once or twice to scroll through items on the display, then close your first to select, I use it all the time when I have my hands full or the watch face is wet
My Apple Watch 3 is still running strong, no problems or complaints to be had! Only reason I'd update would be for that double tap and probably improved measurements from the sensors for day-to-day life
Marques I really respect your candour. Unlike the majority of the RUclips influencers who only hype the apple products they cover, you are honest. You have integrity and that deserves recognition. Thanks!
A rectangular smartwatch is so much more efficient for readability and information conveyance. But I do agree increased battery life would be huge. I wonder how much increase it would be if you turn down the nits
I also dont get the circuital smart watches, before i got SE i had smart watch active 2, and the circular style was annoying, cutting text, less information on screen, then i got Ultra and now i have lots more screen space, i hope they release even bigger model for man that want, maybe like 0.5-0.6 centimeters bigger
If there will be a revolutionary design for Apple Watches next year, how likely do you think the Ultra will be included? Because unlike the series, Ultra does not have an ancient design and it won’t really fit into magnetic band rumors. I can't really imagine anything bigger than things like microLED, thinner bezels, lighter chassis, a new color, or maybe a new size.
Bought my wife her first AW series 8 couple months ago for her birthday. She loves it. Glad I didn’t wait for the series 9. She can text with me while out riding her bike using voice. Then when she gets home, she geeks out over her distance, heart rate, etc. Apple makes great products for a decent price if you stay away from their latest and greatest.
Great video as always, but I’m very interested and curious to know about their fully carbon neutral claim and what that really means. A whole separate video on this would be just awesome. Looking forward to your update on this 😄
I’m also very curious around how they achieved this claim. I assume they’re relying heavily on carbon offsets, but those can often be of dubious merit.
@@mjameson88yeah I'm not going to hold my breath. It'll be a news story in 15 years about how Apple and other companies pulled the wool over our eyes on "carbon neutrality", and it'll be where we look back and be like "people actually believed those claims?"
lol literally 2 second Google search. I cannot believe in this day and age we still have people who can't be arsed to just get the info. themselves. guess the pursuit of knowledge really is a talent, after all. Anyway, here's your info: Each carbon neutral Apple Watch model meets the following strict criteria: 100 percent clean electricity for manufacturing and product use, 30 percent recycled or renewable material by weight, and 50 percent of shipping without the use of air transportation.4 These combined efforts result in at least a 75 percent reduction in product emissions for each model.
@@h445 you have some serious issues my friend. Anyway thanks for the info, I do still have some questions which need some research to be done but I know better than to ask you
I bought the series 9 cellular and received it yesterday. After doing two separate updates to my iPhone and an update to the new watch, I had to call tech-support at Verizon to get it activated. This whole process took me about 3 1/half hours. In my opinion, this is way too long. Keep in mind I’m not just any user, I manage my companies fleet of cell phones so I know a little something about them. It was not obvious during the purchasing process that I would need a USB-C charging plug because Apple doesn’t provide it any longer. Nor was it obvious that I would need an iPhone to set up a cellular Apple Watch. I’m glad I had one even though it’s a corporate phone on a business plan and the watch is a personal device. It is required to put it on a family plan during configuration and pairing set up. The problem with that is your phone doesn’t have the same screens as it would for another set up. I hate the default screen so much that I haven’t even put the Watch on yet and under this configuration I only had three Watch face choices that I could find. So, having the phone in my possession, less than 24 hours leaves me frustrated and disillusioned.
I told myself I'd get a new one every time they changed the design. I had the original, then the series 4 when it came out, and... I still have the series 4. All I really use my watch for is getting my messages and telling the time. Dictation is frustratingly slow on my watch nowadays, and I get a one day battery instead of two like I used to, but... it still works fine. I was gonna replace it with an ultra this year, but I think I'm gonna just keep it another year and see what they do for their tenth anniversary. The iPhone got a special phone, maybe the watch will too. If not, I'll just get the new thing. It'll be a good upgrade either way. Mine's getting a bit chunky. I just use it little enough that I don't mind living with it.
I went through the same thing then just got a Fitbit charge 5 instead. I like the fitness and gps stuff, sleep analysis, and clock. And it’s SMALL which I prefer on my small wrist. All for $100 at meijer
I’m on the exact same boat as you. I will be upgrading next year from my s4 no matter what because the battery life barely lasts a day with sleep tracking. Speed wise, it’s still great. I just don’t want to spend $100 to replace the battery for a watch I’m going to replace
Same here, still rocking the series 4 and see no compelling reason to upgrade to series 9 or the ultra 2, hope they put some kind of new health sensors for the X
I think the biggest change was from the Series 3 to the Series 4. I still have my Series 4, it works great other than a little bit of lag here and there.
I just bought the ultra 2. Man this watch is snappy and speedy. Beautiful look and got the blue ocean band. It’s super bright and can see it in the sunlight perfectly. Perfect titanium build. Rugged and durable. $899 seems expensive but this is ahead of its time. 64Gb is perfect and can hold so many apps. Love this watch so far on day 1 then there after.
@@Villex93 i guess it depends on what do you call "serious". The tissot t-touch has a black titanium variant and it's around 1k. Ok, it's no rolex, but also no casio F91W 😂
I am really looking forward to the in depth video about the sustainability claims of apple. I am curiosos about the amount of carbon offsets that they bought
The assistive touch feature on the previous models is pretty bad for the finger tap, but works pretty well for the hand clench. I use it for Apple Pay when my hands are full.
@@ImpiantoFacile you have to activate the "confirm with Assistive Touch" feature. It's at the bottom of the Assistive Touch settings in the Watch App on your iPhone. Got it working right away.
My Watch SE (1st gen) is still my favorite Apple device and even got the newest WatchOS update. Holding out for a while more in hopes of a complete redesign / major spec upgrade next year or so!
In my opinion Ultra watches should have batteries backup atleast for 3/4 days. Reason - It's ultra, there are segments of people such as traveller / diver / mountaineer can make best use out of this.
Yes 100%. Most of my high adventure friends will never even consider a watch if it can't do 3/4 days or more at minimum. I think this needs to be the biggest focus of the ultra in future updates. It would come with a tradeoff: staying at a bigger size and apple will have to choose between putting it on more differently sized wrists or making a better high adventure tool.
@@MitchKirkhamgiven that the ultra is aimed towards those who don’t care about looks and mainly functionality, I think they can definitely pull it off, if they wanted to.
Currently have the SE 1st gen and am debating whether to upgrade to S9 or grab S8 at a discount from other retailers. I want that temperature sensor and not sure how much I would appreciate the double tap. The only reason to consider S9 (vs. S8) seems to be the new chip which may last longer in terms of future system upgrades?
If u got the money get the s9. Personally, as a s8 owner, considering the lack of big updates on the s9 and the reduction of price in s8, get the s8. Practically the same watch
Or what about the glucose monitor that was rumored to be on the Series 5? Must be a tough one. I’m not into smart watches, but I do think the square screen is better than a round one. Having the square space offers much more area for content in the same diameter as a round watch.
Really wish that the Ultra version was released every few years, feels more of a specialty watch than anything. Other than that, Apple Watches are so far ahead of the competition (smart watch not a fitness tracker that most people talk about) probably why they are just chilling rn
@@MaDDeX93 I have a Galaxy Watch 6 Classic for my S23 Ultra lol doesn’t even touch my Apple Watch Utra, feels slow and muddled. The sensors suck too, very inaccurate. That puts it below even the lowest Apple Watch
I mean the best way to tackle it is definitely upgrade when it stops being supported for updates, or when they actually make significant changes. They couldve very easily brought double tap and other things with a software update but choose not to, hence why it just feels like a cash grab. Or as said in the video, its for people who didnt get the series 7/8 or the ultra yet.
@@Sal12538 I think for the ultra it’s a cash grab for sure, I don’t mind the small changes for the series 9 that’s a given, every manufacturer is going to do the same thing. But with the Ultra, when it was first released there was a huge hype behind it, most people thought it was going to be something that appeared every few years, raise that hype again. But now it’s kind of like oh great, another watch for the line up. I usually keep my watches for about three years so I don’t plan on getting another ultra for quite some time.
The Space Black titanium Series 6 that I have was extremely durable. I've worn it through heavy industrial environments (shipyards and similar) and 3 years in, it looks basically brand new. I don't think that was the issue.
@nonenowherebye Not sure if you deleted your reply comment or not (I had to look at your profile to find it), but just wanna say I was wrong. Apple is a strange company for having essentially implied that the titanium was a first on the Ultra when a finish for it DID exist as an edition for the Series 6. You were right, I’m deleting my old comment. I will say though, it’s still a hard material to work with. I wonder what their real excuse is however.
Currently have the Apple Watch S4, probably gonna upgrade it to the Ultra. Same with my iPhone XS Max, gonna upgrade to the 15 Pro Max. I usually upgrade my apple devices every 5 years or so, it just makes it more worth getting these products rather than expecting a spec bump or/with 1 new feature every year.
Actually I'd love to see the Apple Watch adopt the design of the iPhone 15, now that it's "well rounded" I think it would totally work. What I'd NEVER love to see, is a circular redesign. If other watches have shown us one thing, than that a smartwatch beeing circular means wasted/less space.

So I think it's about time to get an Apple Watch :) Patty that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 comes only in one large size !!!! Love your channel Marques xo
I think this is the first year when Apple has shown some real weakness. Even reviewers like yourself pointing out the absurdity of what they announced this year. I really think it's time for a new direction and for Tim to stand down. Apple needs a new vision.
The double tap algorithm thing is totally valid. For any given chip, power consumption for amount of functions needs to tested, without any changes to the code, the number of functions or maximum power for a product can run is limited for a targeted battery life. MKBHD actually knows this very will, he praised the media encoders/decoders on Mac before, hardware in place of software is a HUGE power saver. Even the algorithm might not be that complicated, but the nature of it based of train data model makes it better to run on a hardware accelerated chip. Regular algorithm’s false positive is higher and consumes more power. This is not an Apple concept either. Hardware acceleration for running AI models is the future. The big AI players are all doing it.
I guess, they have to clearly state the feature is unavailable to preserve battery life. Not that it can run only on s9 due to extreme complexity of the algorithm. Gotta read the exact words of their claim to judge though.
I really respect how you never pull any punches, even when it comes to the company that just quoted you in their presentation. That's why I always trust your opinions and reviews

Apple definitely paid him for a while not to speak of anything. Now marques need to earn back many of our respect just because of his recent atitude.
Except for the anker sponsorship
Exactly.
I think that may also apply to mini iPhone buyers. That said I hope mini will come back next or the following year
It’s marketing to include those enthusiasts, not exclusively for those enthusiasts.

What is the name of the app that calculates respiratory rate?

Surely, as a ‘nurse’ you are supposed to use medically approved hard and software no … ?
@@roa5359 it’s just used to count how many times you’re breathing in and out for 1 min for documentation. The app helps you by counting the min for you while you tap the watch. Without the watch, you have to look at the clock while looking at the patients chest rise and fall. Of course, if there’s something wrong then ‘as a nurse’ you don’t bother with the breathing count and go straight to helping the patient as it would be very obvious that something is wrong. The tracking is just a routine thing to do for our notes. BP and oximeter machines are checked and approved for working regularly.
6:33 the nose tap! I’m glad this classic move is becoming more mainstream

The nose tap was a critical design component for the touch display. It’s specifically calibrated to receive nose taps better than your phone screen!
I just upgraded from a series 4 to a 9 and it seems like a significant improvement to me. Faster, brighter, offers always on, and more.
Same here
Same, series 4->Ultra 2. It’s a dope watch. Additionally if you run the red night mode all day you get really impressive battery life. I get 3-4 days with the night mode on and the display actually looks pretty cool all red.
How much is it
I have a series 3, is it worth upgrading?

In addition to the AssistiveTouch on the older watches, there is a slightly newer option in accessibility called "Quick Actions" which is exactly the double tap feature for most apps. It doesn't have the sometimes needless clutter of the other gestures. It is just the double tap to answer/end calls and some other primary buttons. Only difference is that it does not advance
It also works just fine on my Series 7.
@@tenzingmingmar1424yeah, now their “s9 only” claim is even more ridiculous.
Thanks for the tip! Just enabled quick actions on my SE2
Yeah, I use Quick Touch on my Ultra S1 and have for months. I do have to be fairly deliberate about it, but I'd rather that than risk false taps. I never got Assistive touch to work properly, the clenches just didnt work well for me, but Quick Actions has been just fine for answering/ending calls, dismissing notifications, playing/pausing music. etc.
Honestly, I don't think anyone would mind if the apple watches came out once every 2-3 years instead of once a year
But then they wont make money lol….
Many people would mind. Not me but many.
Apple mind 😂
WatchOS 10 is great but my battery does not like it.

I have a series 3 as well. I’m leaning towards the Ultra 2. Need to decide tonight. I like the 9 stainless steal but it’s not going to replace my nicer timepieces in formal settings so it’s between the aluminum 9 and Ultra 2.
Now that's a good upgrade there for you
I had a series 0 and went to an ultra, well worth the upgrade
I still have my OG 3 I bought back in 2017(?) with my iPhone 8. No idea how the hell this thing is still working AND lasting a whole day on battery.
I’ve wanted to upgrade but.. it still works. Sure it’s slow as hell sometimes but it still does what I need it to.
My Mum had a Series 3 and battery was bad and today she upgraded to a Series 9 and very happy.
Absolutely appreciate the HONEST review and not hyping up a bunch of minor upgrades.
I've been using double-tap on my series 7 watch with WatchOS 10.0 to play/pause and dismiss notifications. Love it! It's so typical Apple to tell us we need the newest device to get a feature they've clearly tested by hiding it behind an Accessibility panel.
You’ve been using AssistiveTouch.
Series 4 here and I think I love it more than any other Apple product I have. I’m not changing it works just as well as I expected
Exactly I used to use that feature on it as well, but the people that didn’t know should feel like they were robbed without a gun for buying the newer models “with tap feature”
0:17 looking at my series 5 and fully expecting you to call it really really old.

Yeah he said that
Not the same.
My Series 4 does it as well
He's talked about this in no less than 3 previous vids. But yes, the upgrade doesn't make much sense unless it's olddddd
It's not even shipping with the watch !😮 in their eyes definitely an upgrade.
As with all things APPLE, you need to experience it to appreciate it.
I am honestly shocked they even released an ultra 2. My ultra is working incredibly well.
lol
prepare yourself for the Ultra 3 the next year and the 4th after that
Lol.😂
They only released an ultra 2 so that the series 9 doesn’t compete with it. It won’t be ultra if it has the same brightness as the series 9 and no double tap. So they had to also give it those features so it is still “ultra”
Just a money grabber

Thank you for this. I was seriously considering updating my Series 5, but there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to do so yet. A battery bump, or glucose monitoring would be a game changer for me.

I have the series 6. It's stood up to the test of time and no need to upgrade personally. Now if the 10 has that glucometer that people were hinting at, I'll immediately get that.
Yeah, you and a billion other people. “Glucometer” ain’t coming anytime soon if at all.
@misterbeane they fixed that

S6 here and I’m trying to fight the urge to upgrade. Just like you, my battery is suffering at 87%, but still functions well enough.

And it works great by the way.
I'm surprised how not a lot of people know about this.
Double pinch is available on my series 8 as well

the feature is available in the accessibility section of my galaxy watch4 classic. The sensors and processing might be better on the new apple watch, but it's not a new feature >_
It works okay NOT great imo but apple will find a way to add more features to distinguish it from the “accessibility” feature
Only reason I'd update would be for that double tap and probably improved measurements from the sensors for day-to-day life
6:41 I love how he described the nose tap. I feel you there marques. Amazing review like always. Excited to see what’s next.

Battery life, that’s the big game changer. They need to release the next Apple Watches to have a week of battery life and it would be huge.
Bought my wife her first AW series 8 couple months ago for her birthday. She loves it. Glad I didn’t wait for the series 9. She can text with me while out riding her bike using voice.
I'm still rocking Series 1 - does what I need it to do
Plus the trash battery.
It’s awesome that Apple still supports the series 4.
Upgraded from Series 4 to Series 9, I’m expecting to get it delivered by tomorrow on its release day! I cannot wait to see the differences.
Sameee me too!
Been using series 3 and upgrading to 9. Next upgrade if the watch has glucometer
PVD titanium is actually pretty common in sport watches, it's not that delicate if done correctly
Correct.
Mainly for mainstream stuff. Quite rare with any serious watch brands or anything over 500$.
@@Villex93 i guess it depends on what do you call "serious". The tissot t-touch has a black titanium variant and it's around 1k. Ok, it's no rolex, but also no casio F91W 😂
I have a series 1
I am really looking forward to the in depth video about the sustainability claims of apple. I am curiosos about the amount of carbon offsets that they bought
10:05 no no no no no. rotating bezel is bad. Also, circular redesign is a terrible idea, because most content is meant to be viewed square.
“A really really old watch..like a series 3” I feel attacked 😂😂😂😂
The assistive touch feature on the previous models is pretty bad for the finger tap, but works pretty well for the hand clench. I use it for Apple Pay when my hands are full.
I'm using the double pinch on my og ultra and I've never had issues with it. Apple is just bullshitting gullible people into buying their new stuff
It still asks me to double click the button on mine. It opens Apple Pay but you can't pay handsfree.
Thanks for being honest about the spec bump. I will most likely get an older model.
In my opinion
Ultra watches should have batteries backup atleast for 3/4 days.
Thanks!
Amazing review. So honest, so intelligent, so helpful. Love this guy.
0:33 "It's coming later this year'"
Apple: *instantly agrees while killing the headphone users*
Do you think I should wait for the next apple watch ultra or just get this one ?
Or what about the glucose monitor that was rumored to be on the Series 5? Must be a tough one. I’m not into smart watches, but I do think the square screen is better than a round one. Having the square space offers much more area for content in the same diameter as a round watch.
You never disappoint with the reviews 👍🏽
Had the Ultra2. Best Smartwatch ever. Sold it and bought a Garmin. Best activity Tracker ever. No regrets!
Really wish that the Ultra version was released every few years, feels more of a specialty watch than anything.
Other than that, Apple Watches are so far ahead of the competition (smart watch not a fitness tracker that most people talk about) probably why they are just chilling rn
They are not ahead of other watches. Samsung watches are ahead has so much more to do. Apple just feels very pale now.
The bright display on the watch is probably for the flashlight feature. Super useful.
Thanks for letting us know about assistive touch, you just saved me $800, my older apple watch still has life in her
The Space Black titanium Series 6 that I have was extremely durable. I've worn it through heavy industrial environments (shipyards and similar) and 3 years in, it looks basically brand new. I don't think that was the issue.
Agreed. What is the difference in how they created the darker color for the Series 6 versus the Ultra?
@@saluvictori1075 uhh, no. The Series 6 Edition is Titanium with a Sapphire crystal. Apple eliminated the Edition version with the Series 8.
2:06 lol phone - I meant watch
But the S9 is a phone...
Should i upgrade to the series 9?, I currently have the series 1
YES a circlular redesign would have got me to buy it to update s5 as for now its just more of the same
Btw the double tap it works on my series 4 which it’s a lot older
9:42 I thought you said something else. 😂
This gentleman articulates information in a clear and pleasant manner. I just discovered his channel and it’s clear he’s educated and a worthy source for gathering intelligence on the latest tech. Quality productions too!
Cool, you discovered him way too late
I still have the Apple Watch Hermés Series 1 that I punched back in October 2015 ... Since then I bought 4 MacBook Pro's, 3 iMac's 27" 2 MacPro's and lots 4 iPhone Pro and 1 iPadPro 19' along the way! So I think it's about time to get an Apple Watch :) Patty that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 comes only in one large size !!!! Love your channel Marques xo
You honestly give the best reviews because you give us the detailed info on the good and the bad knowledgeably and fair. A legend. Keep it up!
I think this is the first year when Apple has shown some real weakness. Even reviewers like yourself pointing out the absurdity of what they announced this year. I really think it's time for a new direction and for Tim to stand down. Apple needs a new vision.
hi i have never owned apple watch before. so should i just bough the ultra 1 which is cheaper right now or go for the new ultra 2?
@@zest01 i know, so it is very reasonable. But MKBHD thinks it can easily be activated on previous watches as well, which is not quite right.
