Great review! I'm 18 and just got fitted for these Taylormade Burner irons. I tested the 8 and 6 irons my swing with the 8 iron was 88 mph and went 163 yards.
I have hit both the Diable driver and Razr X irons at the PGA Demo day and Golfest in Tampa. The equipment is excellent. I have a Razr 2 hybrid in my bag at this time. If you hit the sweet spot of any brand name equipment, you will have great results. What I love about the Burner 2 irons is the soft feel and added distance with the irons because of the technology...I'm gettin' older and a little long in the tooth! Make sure to take a look at the Burner 2 review. Jamie
Great. Make sure you're comfortable with the shaft flex. Because Callaway does a "medium stiff" shaft, that's where the timing differences come in. If I still have any problems squaring up the irons (without having to get "handsy" I make talk to them about regular shafts.
This video was great! I enjoyed watching your club test and analysis, and I have actually booked a test date for these clubs. Thanks for the good opinion and recommendation.
I play the Taylor Made irons about half the time. The shaft is slightly stiffer than my Callaway irons, so under pressure my timing is slightly different. Next month when I return to Florida and have full range access I plan on making the switch full time, to gain the distance benefits.
I had 6.0 project X shafts installed from Taylormade and when I had them measured they were from a 6.4 to a 7.3!!! It doesn't matter what the shaft says on it. Stiff, Regular, etc.....It's just paint or a sticker on a shaft. It means nothing and now I'm convinced of that. BUT THE HEADS ARE AMAZING! I just hit the new R9 TP irons and they are equally as good. Thinner top line and less offset that I love too!
@TheFinneyBoy My philosophy is always this: Hit the clubs, side by side and check these things: distance, trajectory, feel (release of club head) and looks. Whichever club gives you the qualities you want, go with. And look up the specs as far as loft degrees. You might find TaylorMade is less loft for distance than Nike, so this is also a factor. Bottom line though...they all make good equipment, so it really is personal preference! Jamie
Very curious as to what your thoughts on the Burners vs the Callaways are now. Also, if you can give your yardage per club. You said something like the shorter irons pw, 9iron) went the same distance but at what iron is there a difference and what is the difference? Great video. I'm considering going from X18s to Burners.
This is the best review to these clubs to me. I want to get the Burners next season but I don't know yet il just have to vet out there and hit some demos
Most of the testing was with range balls (Pinnacle). All the manufacturers make good balls now, and if you read the specs on the ball sleeves or box, they do perform as rated, so any ball you like will work well with them. There's a video I've done about balls for more info. Jamie P.S. Next month look for a review/test of the new 2.0 irons from me.
I was comparing to my Callaway X14s, but have demoed the Taylor Mades every year at their media events. If you want to hit long irons rather than rescue clubs then I would endorse getting them. If you have the money and want a change, than again, don't hold back. If you are happy with what you play now, than hold on to them and wait for discounting by TM in the future on the Burners. ALL the hardware is good stuff. Jamie
i have played taylormade clubs all my life and i still have my r7 irons from a couple years ago and i find i hit them just as consistently as i do the burner irons, a diffenence in performance
he is spot on with these irons, i just bought a set moving from some cleavlands, the 4 iron was much better but the higher irons were just about the same...
The reason the clubs felt heavier when you swung them, but not when you weighed them, is because the swing weight is different between the two. Swing weight and club weight are not the same.
@helenathena Yes and no. The wedge through 7 are "standard" if there is such a thing, and then, in addition to longer shafts, they got stronger going 6-3.
@805guido The differences in club technology are very minor and have more to do with marketing. I always recommend field testing the clubs for performance. Then go with the best feel and the best deal!
I still love my X-14s and have no real reason to change. They are an excellent standard in quality irons, and are extremely forgiving. However, I love my Burner TP and Rescue too. Play with what works.
The ball flying 15 yards further for a sweet spot hit is not good... image you're 100 from the pin and water over the back, you hit the sweet spot and you're going for a swim. Well, i guess it's only a bad thing if you are a high handicapper that only hits the SS a few times every round.
says the man that knows taylor made is watching lol nice video.. I thought they were for better shots on off center hits ? the 15 yard sweet spot scares me
The quality control on their shafts is horrible! And it's not just Taylormade.....it's all the major companies. I even went through their custom fitting down at The Kingdom. Get your shafts checked by a custom fitter that will measure your shafts in front of you after they install them to make sure the shaft flex matches. I guarantee nobody has the correct flex in their entire set.
you did a great job of listing both pros and cons. this is a very unbiased video

This was great, really informative and enjoyable to watch. Keep them coming!

Excellent review. Thank you.... On a side note, anyone who leaves a negative review of this video has mental problems.
5 years later.... still loving the heck out of my burners

Make sure to see the Burner 2 Iron review on how TM Golf has improved the product.
Jamie
he is spot on with these irons, i just bought a set moving from some cleavlands, the 4 iron was much better but the higher irons were just about the same...
my dad just ordered these for me for my birthday, i can't wait to take them to the range next week!
How did they go? Happy belated Birthday.
The reason the clubs felt heavier when you swung them, but not when you weighed them, is because the swing weight is different between the two. Swing weight and club weight are not the same.
i have the burner glubs and they are definatly a great club for medium handicappers
I have a Diablo Octane driver and a Diablo Octane 3 wood.
I have Razr X Irons and 4 hybrid. Have i bought Good clubs or are these mediocre?
its true i went from hitting a 4 iron 200 yards to about 210 and a 7 iron from 160 to 170-175.

great review. thanks!
Love my burners I'm driving 250 vs my old pings that were only going about 180 big difference
I still love my X-14s and have no real reason to change. They are an excellent standard in quality irons, and are extremely forgiving. However, I love my Burner TP and Rescue too. Play with what works.
I have just posted a review of the Burner 2 irons, and that should answer your questions about them.
Jamie
yeah i guess, but my point was that high handicappers would find it difficult.
i want these now
higher trajectory = more wind interference= more chips or longer putts. they look like Transformer irons
The ball flying 15 yards further for a sweet spot hit is not good... image you're 100 from the pin and water over the back, you hit the sweet spot and you're going for a swim. Well, i guess it's only a bad thing if you are a high handicapper that only hits the SS a few times every round.

They basically put the number 7 on 6 iron. Look up the lofts. Don't get sucked into the marketing.
there very elegant and beautiful to look at.....that's what he said
They are much Easy to control
No duh the 4 iron goes ten yards farther. The burner 4 iron is longer not to mention 2 degrees less than the steelheads
Their more workable. I play forged cavity back titleist 695's much better then my old deep cavity offset nike sumo irons.
no he had to pay for them, they gave him a set to try not to keep
Higher trajectory = more wind interference
The quality control on their shafts is horrible! And it's not just Taylormade.....it's all the major companies.
I even went through their custom fitting down at The Kingdom.

They gave you a free set, so you switched
Get out there *spellcheck*
