    My Dad grew up in the 40s, started playing Trombone as a kid in the late 1930s played all through high school got in to the Naval Academy Band, ended up playing with some hellacious studio musicians through the 40s and 50s. He told me about some amazing drummers he played Jazz and Big band with. Several years outside of the navy after the Korean war he stopped for law school. However he did continue arranging music on the side as a hobby and he did play Trombone from time to time to keep his chops up. He passed away in 2013, but I still have his Trombone that at one point belonged to Tommy Dorsey. ( I know this story does not deal with drums much but just wanted to tell it since Listening to this kind of music always reminds me of him)

    Greyson. Incredible job there! I really enjoy watching you play. For those players that were not introduced to the 3 R's or any other classical training, This man has it all. I am in envy of your single stroke roll speed and accuracy, moving seamlessly around your kit. I remember when learning, that holding those sticks tightly is your enemy. Holding them too loosely is the enemy of everyone around you! Thanks for the vid 66Samus.

    I saw this when it came out on drumeo & watched it a few times. It's always just as incredible. I think one reason his snare is angled that way is to accommodate rim shots. He does more room shots in this song than I can count, I lost count at 22.
    Ohhh yuurrrrr

    I started playing music (piano) at 6 yo. By 9 I'd branched out to Sax and My all time favorite drums. My first 5 or so years were all Jazz/Swing rudiments and stick control. I am always amazed on how such a young artist has gained decades of technique and skill. As for how do you remember the songs, it's like any other. You don't think, you allow it to come out of you. Just get out of your own damn way. That's a quality not many are lucky enough to acquire. For years I had my old Slingerland Jazz set set up with the drums angled, tuned and layed out for when I'd play that style and my other set was Armed and set for the metal that was more common to get other people to come jam to. Great to see someone like Greyson bring this out to a whole new generation, that unlike you and I, never got to watch the greats like Buddy Rich play a chair on the tonight show and wonder how he got so many sounds out of the thing. Thanks to both Greyson and you for sharing this and all your content.

    Pros reacting to pros are the only reaction videos that work for me. I learn so much from this just on a musical theory level. I am not a drummer but I am starting on bass and this type of content is really nice to put things into context from a technical perspective and a feel perspective to understand the nuance of their groove and their timing and improvisation. Thanks Samus!

    The really cool thing about that upside-down ride ping is that he’s not just doing it for flair - he’s getting different tones from the underside. Nothing’s just to look cool, everything’s there for a musical reason. I daren’t imagine how many hours of rudiments he puts in.
    As for how he memorises it… are we sure he does?

    • @subbot8077
      @subbot8077 2 года назад +7

      I'm 90% sure most of it's improvised, he might have memorized the stabs with the horns or something like that but beyond that I think it's all improvised :)
