I saw the REV play April 13th, 2008 at Taste of Chaos in Sacramento and fucking loved every minute. The moment he started playing I got chills. Such an amazingly talented musician gone way too soon.
The Rev's dynamics are nuts. For this style of music, you could pretty easily catch yourself just banging the hell out of every drum. But every time I see him go for his ride cymbal, he's always using very light taps, because that's all he needs to do to get the sound he wants. Same with that swell on the crash at the end of the last video you watched, he's very gently bringing the sound out of the cymbal after bringing the whole goddamn house down. All of the Almost Easy recording at the start shows this, too. He just hits the drums as hard as he needs to, which isn't very hard. The man had utter control.
Yes R.I.P The Rev my one of the biggest drumming inspiration. As a Avenged Sevenfold Super fan I love Jimmy he is just a fantastic drummer. Again R.I.P Jimmy

crazy it was his birthday yesterday and yesterday I had this sudden urge to start listening to them again and even picked up a guitar and learned unholy confessions... easily one of the greatest drummers to have ever existed...
IIRC, Jimmy preferred to get his tracks down in a 'live' recording, ie: playing the track start to finish to make sure it didn't need cutting and resampling. There are a lot of people that prefer to do guitar and drums that way, but it DOES speak to his professionalism behind the kit. The fact he wanted it 'live' so that he wouldn't have to change it when performing says a lot about how much he cared about having it right. Too many bands lean on recording piecemeal and can't play the track start-to-finish live. With Jimmy, it meant he could play the full album the way it was meant to be played when they performed live. Gates is the same way. He'll record one track of his guitar 'live', then double on subsequent tracks to ensure it sounds that way in a concert.
i was lucky enough to see the revs last show with the band at sonisphere in 2009, laughed so hard when he blew out a kick drum lol. such a sick performance, tbh was the first time i ever saw them live. and the last time i would with the rev. such a good drummer, and awesome guy. r.i.p

As a massive A7X fan it genuinely hurts to think this man never got to reach his creative peak, his legacy from such a short career still stands up to some of the best metal drummers i've ever seen. He was the heartbeat of Avenged and i can only be thankful that he was replaced by a drummer who is not only capable of playing at Jimmy's level, but also has the ability to replicate his style whilst adding his own individual twist for following albums. RIP Jimmy, and thank you for what you gave us ❤️
So back in 2004 I met the Avenged Sevenfold guys at warped tour, they were playing the Hurley stage which was not one of the main stages but they would soon be massive. I got pictures with them, I got to hang out with them after the sets for a little bit and Jimmy really liked a watch I used to wear that was all black everything, but the hands would light up if you hit the button on the side. Jimmy was so good. Was huge into avenged in middle school. Interesting seeing Jimmy playing Zildjian in studio seeing as he mainly played sabian live. His setup was interesting. It looks like he has alot of toms because he had his floor toms mounted on his rack instead of using floor tom legs
As far as I know he did a majority if not all his tracks in one take. Which is a big part of what made it’ amazing. He kept whatever mistakes he made in the track but somehow those mistakes are what made it so chaotic and amazing.
Jimmy is actually the reason why I start playing drum when I was 15 years old.. I grow up with only guitar on my daily lesson and never want to touch the drum, until I found Jimmy..
Portnoy was the biggest influence on The Rev! Man, I miss him so much! I can only imagine how much light he would continue to shed upon us all! He's an icon and will continue to be!

RIP in my opinion the GOAT metal drummer. A7X for the longest time was my #1 band growing up. Waking the fallen was my intro to this band. Thanks to Rev and the guys in A7X for helping me get through middle school with your amazing music
Sam says "That's a good place to cut this", like there ever is one for someone as badass as The Rev 😭. Regardless, just another amazing video showcasing some of the master's work. RIP brother.
I am born in 1998 right. I started listening to A7X when i was like 8 years old. Jimmy is the reason i got into drumming. I did everything self taught and just watching and listening to A7X. When i heard he passed away i got very sad as i never got to see him preform live with A7X. Very not normal but Avenged is one of if not my all time fave band because its what got me started with drumming. Still to this day not had the chance to see them live but that day will come hopefully next time they are in Norway. Thank you for this vid Samus
The Rev is one of my biggest influences! I was in middle school when Bat Country released and I immediately fell in love with the drumming. His death was the first time a genuinely felt sad about a famous person dying. RIPREV
The way he plays is very melodic to me. It's not just a metronome, it's a crucial instrument in A7X sound. Very few drummers do that. It blew my fkin mind when I first heard it in 2006. I was a 10 year old kid and he instantly became my idol. And he's not just a drumming wizard. The dude was a musical prodigy. So many of their early bangers was his creation. Unfortunately he was a firework that burns 5x faster than the rest. That bang he caused when he left us will never be topped. Portnoy, Arin or Brooks are awesome awesome drummers, but Jimmy was special and he lives foREVer in my heart. 15 years has passed Jimmy, come back from the woods will you...🥲
My foster mom got me into drumming as a way to burn off extra emotion, and from there I fell into music in general, eventually through CoD zombies I found A7X and loved it, I was sadly too late to see Rev play, but just watching the recordings of his performances and learning about how the band was formed around him, I cant help but think of him as one of the best drummers of all time, people always talk about John Bonham or Neil Peart, but how can you not appreciate how much talent and skill that Rev showed, or even his stage presence and personality, not to mention how he also sang AND played the piano for the band, dude was one of the greats who got taken way before he got a chance to cement himself up there with the likes of those I mentioned before
The rev is literally the reason why I decided to start learning drums and play double kick. This dude is a absolute legend. Rest in power my guy 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
Before I even started playing drums, I’d watch that beast and the harlot drum cam video religiously. Jimmy’s the man that changed my life for the better. RIP

The Rev was fucking amazing. So steady and consistent... There is one react I would to see you do, Alex Rüdinger. Dude is beastly, and such a prolific drummer. Tons of high quality YT content, recorded and toured with a lot of bands... first hit my radar about 10 years back when he was playing with The Faceless.
one of the things that got The Rev into drumming was it helped keep him out of trouble. his teen years were involved in theft a lot. mike portnoy was his idol when it came to drums, one of the reasons they used portnoy for the nightmare album

R.I.P The Rev and thanks Samus for reacting and appreciate it. SEGGS
Happy birthday Jimmy the rev Sullivan
You chose the best videos! The Rev was extremely dedicated since he was a child, he breathed drums.
Portnoy was the biggest influence on The Rev! Man, I miss him so much! I can only imagine how much light he would continue to shed upon us all! He's an icon and will continue to be!
I love the Rev so much his my idol and I think if he was still with him and I saw him in real life I'd probably have a heart attack from getting to excited
Such an absolute legend ! He was also apart of a band with the guitarist sinister gates called Pinkly Smooth where he was the vocalist and pianist! So much talent it blows my mind
Didn’t think I was gonna cry today, but here we are.
The Rev was one of my favorite drummers growing up! This video makes me happy
RIP in my opinion the GOAT metal drummer.
A7X for the longest time was my #1 band growing up. Waking the fallen was my intro to this band.
Thanks to Rev and the guys in A7X for helping me get through middle school with your amazing music
Waking the fallen was a masterpiece. I wish they had stuck with that sound just a little longer
I bet you must be real fun inside the circle pit bro hell yeah
@@creepydutchman I did a wall of death for all shall perish once. It was epic in a tiny room lol
@@joshrepik i commited a stage dive at my kid's school music festival. now he's a proud son
@@creepydutchman I’m with it!
Sam says "That's a good place to cut this", like there ever is one for someone as badass as The Rev 😭. Regardless, just another amazing video showcasing some of the master's work. RIP brother.
Such positive comments. I love this. He will foREVer live in our hearts
seriously one of the best musicians in modern history. i was lucky enough to see him a year before he passed - i'll never forget that day. RIP
One of my favorite drummers. So sad he's not with us.
The Rev was a brilliant musician! Axe Heaven has released his double bass kit,it’s totally worth it!
It’s been over a decade and he’s still being talked about. That’s how you know you’ve made it
The Rev is one of my biggest influences!
15 years has passed Jimmy, come back from the woods will you...🥲
Definitely my favorite drummer and probably the best drummer to have ever existed
jimmy played whit his feelings ! so he was so talented ! RIP ..
My foster mom got me into drumming as a way to burn off extra emotion, and from there I fell into music in general, eventually through CoD zombies I found A7X and loved it, I was sadly too late to see Rev play, but just watching the recordings of his performances and learning about how the band was formed around him, I cant help but think of him as one of the best drummers of all time, people always talk about John Bonham or Neil Peart, but how can you not appreciate how much talent and skill that Rev showed, or even his stage presence and personality, not to mention how he also sang AND played the piano for the band, dude was one of the greats who got taken way before he got a chance to cement himself up there with the likes of those I mentioned before
Jimmy was ahead of his time.
One of the best metal drummer ever, he is one of the reason i got into drumming and the reason why i love music so much...❤🤘
The rev is literally the reason why I decided to start learning drums and play double kick.
RIP
Jimmy was such an absolute fucking beast, man, he was such an insane drummer and had a great sense of humour… Still sucks that he left us so early but his legacy still lives on, and happy birthday to Jimmy
Dude this video was awesome! You have an awesome personality man! We all miss Jimmy. RIP THE REV
My favorite band and drummer/vocalist growing up sadly he passed on my birthday it about killed me so every birthday there’s a bit of sadness and a lot of avenged sevenfold rip Jimmy the rev sulllivan foREVer 🤘🏼❤️
A little piece of heaven will always be the greatest love song. Goodness… The Rev, never forget. Amazing drummer.
The-Rev was my favourite drummer in the world, RIP The-Rev 🙏🌹
He's half of the reason my son is named James. The Rev was and still is an absolute legend. Thank you for doing this video 🤘🏻
Just a man about his business! You are missed Rev.
one of the things that got The Rev into drumming was it helped keep him out of trouble. his teen years were involved in theft a lot. mike portnoy was his idol when it came to drums, one of the reasons they used portnoy for the nightmare album
Love the primus reference when he's playing as a kid lol jimmy was a drummer driver
On top of his drumming, he also composed grand songs in full. My number 1 inspiration, nice video Samus 🤘
Legend R.I.P The Rev ! I watch this video of the rev almost every other day
they are ok now a days but man they were so much better when Rev was still here such a great musician RIP REV 🤘❤
The rev was one of the main reasons why I loved the first 3 albums.
We miss you jimmy. ITS been 14 years since you gone
