Dave grohl is the one who started my career with drumming, I just love the way he plays and the sound of his drums is just magnificent. Total inspiration towards other musicians
I would also put Evgeny Novikov on the list (Ex-Katalepsy, Slaughter To Prevail). If you have seen the Drum Playthrough of Demolisher, you can see and feel how hard he hits the drums in the breakdown like it owes him money. And he is also pretty fast, consistent, precise and creative. If you listen closely, in the chorus of Demolisher he plays a punk style beat, kind of, plus he uses a lot of different cymbals in the songs. And holy hell, he holds the drumsticks upside down. I assume it is also one of the reasons he can hit the snare during Gravity Blasts pretty hard considering in most cases the sound of the snare is a bit quiet when playing a Gravity Blast.

I have to make an honorable mention of Connor Denis from Beartooth. Man hits the drums like they own him money, especially in the live playthrough of The Lines for instance. He's a monster
Glad you included Grohl. Obviously not metal but watch aneurysm or breed at the paramount, a three person band putting out that much sound is definitely impressive
So many good drummers out there and having some not included doesn't make them any less. Just for that I would shout out my two favorite ones: Tomas Haake of Meshuggah and Danny Carey of Tool

There's something about people like Eloy Casagrande or Jason Newsted, it's the kind of musicianship I aspire to be have one day, you feel their soul and raw energy when they play.
Neil Peart from Rush was also an extremely hard hitter...saw a video clip where he broke the bass drum head, courtesy his drum tech Lorne Wheaton. RIP Neil.
Was literally about to say the exact same thing, then I saw this comment. Such an incredible drummer. WC is lucky to have him, he's a super good fit with those guys.
Dude the hardest I’ve ever seen Dave Grohl hit the drums is when Nirvana played Lithium at the VMA’s. the camera cuts to him on the first chorus and he’s not only head banging from all the way sitting up to almost hitting his head on the snare but he’s hitting the crashes and snare so fucking hard it’s unreal.
Dave is who I thought of when entering this video. He killed those symbols in the 90s. Pretty sure he had to have wrist surgery because of it even. Though he is often forgot about outside of Pearl Jam fans. Probably because he does not have many videos online that aren't of old PJ concerts. But here is an example for those that never saw him. ruclips.net/video/jPGiwRfGGkU/видео.html
As a fellow metal drummer, Its nice to see Lars make this list. Every modern metal drummer has giggled at his expense before, but he played a huge role in their success and he's most definitely earned the respect. \m/
I feel like Lars is the best and worst thing to happen to metal drumming. Pretty much every metal drummer under 40 would be lying if they said that Lars wasn’t among their original idols. His influence can be heard in bands coming out today. But the better you get at drums, the more you realize that his beats sound harder and heavier than they actually are. It’s kind of like when you get old enough to realize that your dad isn’t actually a super hero. And then you listen to St Anger, and you treat Lars like the racist uncle that always shows up to thanksgiving, even though no one invited him.
@@eddiekalista3222 haha well said. Yea its kinda like, I appreciate him because he influenced the guys I look up to. Still cant help but wonder what they couldve sounded like with a freak drummer back there though.
@@annikancrylarker3314 look up Joey Jordison Creeping Death. There was a Metallica show awhile back where something happened to Lars, and he couldn’t play. So the drummers from the other bands split the set list up and filled in. I think Dave Lombardo was on that show as well.
there's a video on youtube (audio only), of one of their first shows with jason, where the kicks on "four horsemen" sound like he's dribbling basketballs.
@@lesterunwin epic, there’s one in Seattle in the 80s and I think (think it’s blackened) and he looks like he’s on a boat load of cocaine thrashing away about 1.5x the speed , so good 😂
Great list. People hate Lars and I get that but he's always been one of my favs. I know he's not mangini but he's one of the founders of the greatest band of all time.
People just have very short term memory or they just weren't there at all and think they know better . When Lars came on the scene in 1982 he was the first guy to play those types of beats and fills, it was AMAZING, I can still feel the smile that came to my face when Hit the lights came on the first time on my turn table , a game changer !! It was followed by a lots and lots of imitators. Ever see Metallica live? Lars is a monster, he gives everything he has like not too many drummers out there. I saw Metallica in 1983 in a small auditorium in Quebec city , when the drum started , I was crying FFS , it was too awesome.
David silveria from Korn hits so hard on drums he even broke his wrist and his back along with other injuries due to how hard he hits and so does so does Joey jordison from Slipknot my top two drummers
Just FYI, if you hurt yourself while playing the drums, you should really look into changing your technique. I play electric bass and double bass mainly and I know people who have been unable to play for months or even more because they ignored pain they got while playing their instruments.
@@thomasjefferson2676 Danny hits hard, but he's definitely more about control and intent, which gives him such a broad range and sound. I recall on the Pneuma live video, he looks like a dude with a machete at some point tryin to hack through a zombie.
OK Dawg, love what you do because you do it well. SOMETIMES you are human, like everybody else in yet NOBODY ONCE THOUGHT OF JOHN BONHAM as one of the hardest hitting drummers (EVER). Just his hands alone where tearing it up then give him some sticks.... I'd love to know how many cymbals & heads he actually broke not even meaning to.... k, I had to get this out. I feel insanely better now... 👊🙏🤙 Even, well just the lead singer for Led Zeppelin said he never heard a harder hitting drummer behind his entire career. Now unless I'm the lame ass that missed your mention then I'm a lame ass.... Its all good except you have to give a shout out you left Bonham OFF THE HARDEST HITTING LIST... Peace & Chicken Grease J Moon2a
I'm surprised that there's no mention to Mike Bordin from FNM. He's still a beast on drums. Also, nobody can denied the 1st place, Eloy hit his drumkit like it owed him money.
Speak for yourself, I LOVE Lars especially because of how much he’s responsible for in terms of the music Metallica has created over the last nearly 40 years! There are few if any drummers who are so involved in the songwriting process. Lars only gets hate because it’s “cool and edgy” to hate on him. People wanted to hate on him for the Napster shit, but guess what, HE WAS 100% RIGHT! Look at the state of the music industry now, I mean Apple won’t even let you buy music anymore, you only get to rent it, for a bullshit fee every month and once you decide to stop you lose it all! Thanks to Napster
Chris Turner should be on the list too! One of the hardest hitter right now, without using any triggers or even samples ! (I don’t blame the use of trigger of course) This guy is mind blowing
Deftones Abe definitely a powerful performance for sure! The best thing about him is that beside that fact he provide innovative groove! One of my fav with Mario!
He's the number 1 for me because of his speed/power/precision combo. Just as Sam mentioned - maybe his hits are not as hard as others' but, holy shit, he's fast and tight as hell.
One guy that seriously impressed me live was Tommy Clufetos. I seen White zombie live about 20 years ago at a very small venue (3-400 people) during a halloween caberet in regina sask. i have seen so may bands in my life and never do i ever remember thinking the drums were going to collapse. I know hes not the fastest or most technical but i have never seen anyone else hit as hard as Tommy. He was literally off his stool on every kick and snare hit.. was the craziest thing ive every seen.. love to see your comments on him. i havent seen any footage that compares to what i seen that night live but its clear this guy smashes his kit..
That’s a real great list. If this were my list, i would add Adrian Erlandsson from At the Gates to somewhere at the list. I watched the drumcam for ”Slaughter of the Soul” and damn.. His toms and BOTH cameras were shaking really hard.
Yeah I came here specifically to comment his name after watching the video, I'm shocked only 3 of us out of the top 100 commented his name. I mean, they have the most copied album in metal from the 90s and people still don't know the band unless they like death metal.
@@artursruseckis4242 Its the style of the band, and since Igor and Eloy both hit harder than Lars (and two of the most powerful hitters in history), I don't see how its unfair to have Igor and Eloy and leaving off Lars. Plus, Igor hasn't been in Sep since like 2007, he's been in other bands. I mean, just look how pulverizing his strokes are here: ruclips.net/video/6rjCLLqJL7A/видео.html
I do think that Chris Turner deserves an honorable mention on this list, simply due to how much he stomps those pedals with such precision and raw power.
So glad Mario made this list, let alone at #2. The very first time I listened to Gojira, I thought "whoa, it's pretty cool that they have 2 drummers", that man is a force of nature.
Thank you so much for mentioning Sevendust's drummer. Such a strange coincidence because I was JUST watching old live videos of them. First band I ever saw (with Creed lol) when I was just a little ass kid.
Unpopular opinion: Neil Peart is a powerhouse!!!!! Watching his entire set sway when he plays is crazy. Also, you can't forget the time his tom and cymbal feel off the kit cause he hits so hard!!
I feel like this list is more about drummers that put loads of kinetic energy into their drumming, Neil may have hit hard but he never smashed the kit to pieces like the others do
Breaking Sticks Means Nothing other than You are Hitting Incorrectly. I Hit Super Hard..I just shave the wood down from Super Hard rim Shots on the Snare.
I heard in an interview after being asked why he hits the drums so hard, Dave Grohl said he didnt have drums so he learned on pillows. imagine how hard you have to hit a pillow to get a cymbal sound out of it. i suppose speed and compression could change the molecular makeup of the feathers and cloth. Though not scientifically verified, it is said Dave forged his drum set from hitting pillows purchased at walmart. The math also says if he continues to beat the same drums, they will eventually turn to anti-matter thus ending all existence which is why he occasionally switched up drum kits and now plays guitar...just to be safe. Thank you for your sacrifice Mr. Grohl.
When I was young I used to keep a piece of beef jerky in my mouth so I didn't grind my teeth so bad when I played because I played with so much power. So the joke you made about keeping bubble gum in your mouth is actually a reality.
When I saw Gojira live, Mario threw a stick and it was literally broke in half... I mean, it was during a song so he broke the stick probably in few minutes

don't forget ian paice to top of the trio
Neil Peart from Rush was also an extremely hard hitter...saw a video clip where he broke the bass drum head, courtesy his drum tech Lorne Wheaton. RIP Neil.
Chris Turner #1 heaviest hitting on kick drum, dude doesn't need triggers and by far the most skilled IMO
i would like to add Igor Cavalera AND both Phil Taylor and Mikkey Dee of Motörhead...both blew me away with their raw power on stage
Mikkey Dee. YES!! That dude hits HARDDDDD. Awesome drummer.
So glad Rudi got an honourable mention! 🤘
What song was he playing in his mention?
He was playing over the Rick n Morty theme song.
Also I'm pretty sure he recorded a special guest soundtrack for one of the episodes!
Was literally about to say the exact same thing, then I saw this comment. Such an incredible drummer. WC is lucky to have him, he's a super good fit with those guys.
David Silveria has always been one of my favorite drummers. He's hit so hard before he broke his wrist.
So Chris Tuner and Alex Camarena are definitely missing on the "honorable mentions" list, but still all of the displayed drummers are BEASTS
Chris Tuner and his "shorts"
How hard hits Chris turner? "13 pairs of sticks in one day" hard , love this dude.
I was waiting for this comment!!! 💯 FACT
Watching Eloy drum is a joy, his covers in his channel are savage
I love Dave Abbruzzese when he was with Pearl Jam. He seemed so laid back when he played, but he hit pretty damn hard
I was about to write this when I saw your post.
@@xtlm pretty sure there's the SNL performance floating around and also this: ruclips.net/video/llOpE85bmW0/видео.html
If that's the case why no mention of Alex VH!? Also uses massive Stix to kill drums!!
I saw Eloy live in 2008, I was completely stunned. That was a show that I will always remember. Since then I follow his work.
“I just realised that we didn’t included Slipknot drummer on this list”
But you did 😂
hehehe
Honorable mention from me would be Thomas Hakke from Meshuggah. That man is an absolute beast of a drummer as well.
@@eddiekalista3222 Hell yea Ill definitely give it a look. Thanks for the recommendation!
Exactly man
Lars in his prime is insane! good list my man.
there's a video on youtube (audio only), of one of their first shows with jason, where the kicks on "four horsemen" sound like he's dribbling basketballs.
I can’t stand people that hate on Lars!
He is one of the most musical drummers of and entire era!
my man
He's a greedy little troll. But he drums like a motherf**
He never broke his wrist, and his back injury had nothing to do with drumming, just to clear some things up.
I guess I must have just been hearing it wrong from other people but he does hit pretty hard though
Just FYI, if you hurt yourself while playing the drums, you should really look into changing your technique. I play electric bass and double bass mainly and I know people who have been unable to play for months or even more because they ignored pain they got while playing their instruments.
@@Ryan-qn1wr wait i thought he did injured his wrist in 2000. Korn had to replace him with faith no more drummer
@@supanutte9357 He did, it just wasnt a broken wrist.
The guy from Kublai Khan hits real hard for me, he keeps it simple yet tasteful and every beat goes straight through the soul
Chris Kantos of Machine Head is definitely a well rounded heavy hitter. much love for him as well!
My favorite was the live performance of lithium on mtv. The one where krist knocks himself out with his bass,
Dave was TOTAL beast mode that night!!!!
where tf is danny carey! his drumming is thunderous.
Somewhere between #1 and the honorary mentions.
Shameful he was missed
I think Danny is more technical than hard-hitting and probably why he didn’t make the list
@@thomasjefferson2676 Danny hits hard, but he's definitely more about control and intent, which gives him such a broad range and sound. I recall on the Pneuma live video, he looks like a dude with a machete at some point tryin to hack through a zombie.
Danny is in another league
Great list. Aric Improta (Fever 333) is another drummer who hits hard as hell and has just an absurd amount of energy behind the kit!
Dude, Aric blows my damn mind. I could watch his youtube vids all day.
Good list, I would add personally Matt Halpern from Periphery. The dude's kit is always moving!
His poor snare :(
He hits hard yet effortlessly, imagine if he put in the "effort" to hit harder just because x)
Church Burner is the shining example of him being hard hitting
Apparently according to Nolly him and Matt Gartska have both gone through a snare head in five hits or less lol
Danny Carey is on my list just for his speed and precision.
Gene is probably one of my favorite drummers of all time
evengy novikov from slaughter to prevail is an absolute beast
That poor drum set... rip
Agreed
Mike Smith from Suffocation has the LOUDEST BLAST BEATS ever known to man. Without triggers
Matt Halpern hits pretty hard! If you do another video like this, definitely include him!
Vinnys' drumming on 13 steps to nowhere is sick
This man woke up and chose to speak fax
I'm Matthew Kelly the composer, I can't play drums to save my own pathetic life so I've been programming blast beats since the 90s. 😭
OK Dawg,
love what you do because you do it well.
👊🙏🤙
Even, well just the lead singer for Led Zeppelin said he never heard a harder hitting drummer behind his entire career.
Now unless I'm the lame ass that missed your mention then I'm a lame ass....
Its all good except you have to give a shout out you left Bonham OFF THE HARDEST HITTING LIST...
Peace & Chicken Grease
J Moon2a
I'm surprised that there's no mention to Mike Bordin from FNM. He's still a beast on drums.
Also, nobody can denied the 1st place, Eloy hit his drumkit like it owed him money.
Everyone hates Lars, everyone loves Vinnie 😂
i like them both but vinnie actually practiced and kept time but i like the rawness of larses playing its like he doesnt give a f and just jamming
Lars is one of the reasons why a lot of people want to play drums so he must be doing some right 😲
Lol only acceptable answer
@@stevec7435 He did something right yeah, back in the 80s. And with the help of editing of course.
I appreciate the inclusion of dominator. The reason his tom fills sound so good is he really makes the heads move.
He's the number 1 for me because of his speed/power/precision combo. Just as Sam mentioned - maybe his hits are not as hard as others' but, holy shit, he's fast and tight as hell.
Dominator is my top pick
Dude! You forgot John Bonham! The legendary "hard hitting" drummer of all time!
Indeed, was the first name that came to mind when I read ' hardest hitter '
I wouldn’t say Bonham was a particular hard hitting drummer.
@@spacegarnaal When has John Bonham ever played War Pigs live?
@@Biggensan RUclips - Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick Live, and you'll understand 🙂
Yup. Maybe he had to be left off the list to avoid a copyright strike?
If I don’t see Mario duplantier on here I will find you.
Edit: ok you’re good
All one would have to do is listen to Vacuity to understand that mario smacks
@@TheMickey0718 I initially read that comment as "mario sucks" I was about to hire a hitman ahahahaha
Gojira is great
@@spudmagnum7394 calm down guy,
Igor Cavalera not being on this list is a complete and utter sin. He hits SO hard.
would be unfair to other bands to have two Sepultura monsters in top2
@@artursruseckis4242 I understand, but he could have mentioned in the end, with the other not top 10 drummers
100%
@@artursruseckis4242 Its the style of the band, and since Igor and Eloy both hit harder than Lars (and two of the most powerful hitters in history), I don't see how its unfair to have Igor and Eloy and leaving off Lars.
Plus, Igor hasn't been in Sep since like 2007, he's been in other bands.
I mean, just look how pulverizing his strokes are here:
ruclips.net/video/6rjCLLqJL7A/видео.html
Igor is the heaviest! Take off another Brazilian Aquiles and add him
I do think that Chris Turner deserves an honorable mention on this list, simply due to how much he stomps those pedals with such precision and raw power.
Abe from deftones deserves at least a mention 🥺
Good one! Man, he's a real smasher.
Nah.
Nah.
Mike Smith has a whole video segment on playing harder than everyone
Vinnie and Dimebag. Rest in Peace
When you said #5 I was amazed because I love Death & the song symbolic it’s my absolute favorite album as well
Yeah gene is on dark Angel darkness descends, check that band out
So glad Mario made this list, let alone at #2.
Glad to hear Morgan Rose get some love! Such great showmanship and yes he hits hard. Seen him play many times🤘
ye, I was gonna react if Morgan was missing. I mean, he's perhaps the HARDEST hitting one.
Great list, definitely all top tier drummers. My personal favorite is Dave McGraw of cattle decapitation
I love Vinnie Paul's style so much. He was on of the grooviest metal drummers i know of.
He created groove metal, can’t get much groovier than that.
Thanks for the great list! I would add FNM's Mike Bordin for sure!
Unpopular opinion: Neil Peart is a powerhouse!!!!! Watching his entire set sway when he plays is crazy. Also, you can't forget the time his tom and cymbal feel off the kit cause he hits so hard!!
I feel like this list is more about drummers that put loads of kinetic energy into their drumming, Neil may have hit hard but he never smashed the kit to pieces like the others do
I think this isn't unpopular my friend, he's one of the greatest drummers ever
Yes. He played with power and leverage, but with little wasted energy or unecessary motion. The oak promark 747s helped a great deal with that.
@@porcelainthunder2213 love the 747s and i don’t even hit that hard
Not only Neil but Mike Pertnoy , Mike Mangini , John Bonham , Ginger Baker and A host of others.
That's gold! Everytime he hits his snare, I can feel it up here in Canada! YEAHHHH
Grohl will always be my favourite drummer. Regardless of anything else, his right foot is absolutely incredible
Yup. His hard-hitting style was what Kurt loved most when they hired him.
Esse cara é foda
Colocou 3 bateristas brasileiros na lista
Isso sim é incrível
eloy # 1 fechou
Eu so vi o eley eo arquiles, qual foi o outro???
People Just forget about Igor Cavalera! The Man is 50's and still beat his drums, like it's tryng to steal his meal!
Morgan Rose it's one of my favorites and the reason I tried start playing drums
Honorable mention to Jordan Mancino. Dude has broken sticks 3 of the 4 times I've seen him live
Breaking Sticks Means Nothing other than You are Hitting Incorrectly. I Hit Super Hard..I just shave the wood down from Super Hard rim Shots on the Snare.
I think Ray Luzier could've been in here, in his live performances with KoЯn he beats the piss out of the drums.
David Lee Roth would introduce Ray as "Lighting" Ray Luzier when Ray was in Dave's band - but I always thought Dave should've said "thunderous"...
he's more groovy
Korn's drummer broke his hand at a show from beating the drums so hard... Fact
Ray hits really hard.
David Silveria hit harder
Tom hunting is probably the hardest hitting drummer in thrash scene.
It is sad that he is way too underrated
One of the best and a lefty!
When I saw Gojira live, Mario threw a stick and it was literally broke in half... I mean, it was during a song so he broke the stick probably in few minutes
James Kottak hits the kit ungodly hard. One of the most underrated drummers ever.
Stronger than Herman.
