    Great video! Couldn’t clear the H98 on the reset, so I followed your steps and removed the magnetron. On inspection, it looked ok - no crack - but I decided to go ahead and buy a replacement on eBay for C$65. It arrived today, installed it, and voila! Functioning microwave! Thank you so much! Another appliance saved from the landfill!

      where did you order your Magntron from? Did you get from CHINA? What type microwave model? I'm handy man but you think i can change?

    • @greanfinisher4014
      @greanfinisher4014 Год назад

      @@davetravelstheworld I'm sure you could change it, but I certainly wouldn't replace the magnetron unless you first check it for grounds while the oven is unplugged. Personally, I would use a VTVM for the ground check rather than a DVM. If the ground check turned up negative, I would then check the magnetron with a high voltage DC probe while the oven is running. Actually, I think you're looking at 1.5KVDC - 2.5KVDC being applied to the magnetron. Be VERY careful if you do use that high voltage DC probe while checking that magnetron as those high voltages are lethal.

    One of the best how to videos I’ve seen, Kudos! Clear and fully documented.
    Love these Panasonic microwave ovens, but the weakness we’ve found is the microswitches failing. Have replaced them several times on a couple different ovens.

    Thank you for the video! After the 5V pass transistor shorted and dumped 18V into the main control IC on mine, I found a replacement board on eBay from someone saying their magnetron fried but the board was fine. Didn't think they'd save that the tube perviously failed in an EEPROM! That reset procedure made it happy again, thanks :)

    You're a life saver! During a power failure yesterday, I used a small Honda generator to power my Panasonic inverter microwave oven. Unfortunately, the generator didn't have enough capacity to power the microwave oven. Well, after power was eventually restored to the house, I kept getting an H97 error with the Panasonic inverter microwave oven. By following your guide, I was quickly able to get the microwave oven back and running again. Thank you very much!

    Wonderful video, thank you. I just picked up a Panasonic inverter microwave with grill function from a scrap heap and it has the H98 code. The grill works fine, but it would be pretty cool if I can get the microwave function working too. A brief glance online suggests it's worth around £250 GBP brand new.
    I don't have the fancy diagnostic tools (yet... maybe one day!) so my first port of call will likely be to pull the magnetron and check the magnets, assuming there's nothing visibly wrong with the inverter.
    Nothing better than getting stuff for free and making it work for cheap!

    I decided to test and see if I was ready for a power outage. I cranked up my 1800w(2200 peak) inverter generator. Ran the fridge and internet for 4 hours, no problem. Then I plugged in the same model NN-SA651S that you are working on(all by itself) Microwave ran about 30 seconds and quit, tried 2 more times, same result, except now it shows the H97 code. I spent a few hours checking diodes/full wave bridge rectifier, door switches, I figured the unit was toast! Then I found this video, reset the code, plugged it into the house outlet, and all is fine again. I noticed another commenter said they too had plugged it into a generator and it caused the error code! I bought an inverter generator because it is supposed to have clean power to run things like this, guess that's not completely true?

So is there some way to program the oven to always operate at P9 (power 9) without having to press the Power Level button twice each time you want to cook something ?

    What causes the h97 code? I have to watch the first 2 min of this video at least once a month to get rid of the h97 code, I'm surprised haven't been able to remember the order of what to press yet! So everytime I put a paper towel in to cover something greasy or sometimes microwaveable popcorn it will shut off at least 2-3 times before it throws me out to the h97 code. But I'm wondering why? I've even looked in the user manual to see if I shouldn't use paper towels and it says it's fine? In the video you go over the h98 code and how it stops heating, but mine still heats even when it turns in for 20 sec at a time before it throws the h97 code. So what is the h97 code mean and should I be replacing or fixing something so that I dont end up with a h98 code and have a bigger problem on my hands?
    I also want to say thank you!!! Without videos like yours I would end up buying a whole lot of new appliances or spending money to service things that really anyone with some basic knowledge can fix with instructions from amazing people like you that take time to show us what we need to know! Thanks!!

      In my experience it's always been a weak magnetron that has been tripping the H97 and possibly H98 codes in my microwaves Make sure the air vent on the back is clean as well as the tips of the fan blades, that can cause reduced airflow and damage the magnetron

    Best how-to vid I'm seen - My problem is that the code reset (model NN-SA651S with H98 code) won't take. Instead of the END message I get a "0277" message? Tried a number of times all with the same result. I DLed the service manual and nothing about that code could be found? I'm not setup to test anything other than door switches so with a replacement mag running about $50 and finding another post mentioning the inverter board may be bad, anyone know if I should take a chance? love the oven and the $130 Sharp I replaced it with in nowhere near as good.

      Short the 2 large leads from the inverter board to the magnetron to chassis ground to discharge any voltage, then remove them from the magnetron. try the reset, start it and see if it runs for a few seconds. If it does then the magnetron is the issue.

    Nice. I'm always surprised by the high number of interconnect cables present in such a stable design, probably has something more to do with interchangeable standard components than good design. Some people here have commented that servicing this to that degree is uneconomic compared to getting another, but these's the satisfaction of keeping from landfill and more importantly, there are people around who don't want to learn how to use new gear if they can avoid it.
    I'd be looking at getting that rust out of the chamber though. It soaks up a bit of the power delivered. Also be careful, the magnetron may use beryllium oxide ceramics for the stem and anntenna support. When chucking it out, seal it up carefully in something because the dust from it is a carcinogen, lethal if injested or breathed in (not sure how much, don't want to find out).

      still might be a bad magnetron, measure the current draw at the ac input you should see between 12 and 18 amps at 120 volts, if you only see 2-3 amps its probably the mangetron. Also if you can get a high voltage probe, measure the high voltage (5000-6000 volts) at the magnetron input.

    I have a Panasonic Inverter microwave oven model NN-ST680S. I bought it brand new 5 years ago, and today for the first time the unit stops after about 10-15 seconds and displays H97 on the readout. My model has 10 user adjustable power levels with 10 being maxiumum (1100 watts). I have noticed that if I select power level 5 (600 watts) or below, the microwave will operate normally (no H97 error) and can still be used, although cooking time will be longer as expected. On the higher power levels I can hear a clicking sound when initially operated and then it cuts out and displays H97. I just turn off the power switch and back on again to reset and be able to use again (on power level 5). I assume this does the same thing instead of having to perform the unlock process you demonstrated. I'm not sure how long my microwave will continue to work like this on reduced power, but it looks like I'll just buy a new replacement microwave soon since they are relatively inexpensive these days. Great video though for people that prefer to fix it themselves.

    I have 25 years of tv and MW repair I would consider that damage to the paint inside the cavity before deciding to repair as the MW energy thinks the bare or rusty spots are food and strains the magnetron.

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  5 лет назад +6

      Many high end microwaves use a stainless cavity that is not painted. The paint is transparent to the microwave energy and as long as there is no moisture there will be no heating. If the rust particles grow to become close to 1/4 wavelength of the 2.4ghz microwave then they might react. Just to be sure I used the IR camera to see if the rust (rust has a high emissivity of thermal energy because of all the little pockets) areas were heated and there was negligible differences.

    • @jacktaylor1030
      @jacktaylor1030 4 года назад +2

      I have rust/burn spots on the paint in the cavity that I suspect as my problem. I get the H97 code, and can clear it. The oven will then run for 20-30 seconds before shutting down again. It may do this a couple of more times before the H97 code reappears. I don't have an IR Camera so I cannot verify if it's a paint problem though. The oven does generate some heat during this process, not enough to pop my popcorn completely.

      This is from another service manual, I do not have one for your model, but they all opearte pretty much the same.
      1. Oven stops in 3 seconds after
      pressing [Start] pad.
      No input AC is supplied to H.V.Inverter (U)
      CN702 terminals
      1. Latch Switch
      2. Power relay RY1
      3. Loose lead wire connector CN701, CN702
      4. H.V. Inverter (U)
      Oven stops in 23 seconds after
      pressing [Start] pad.
      H.V.Inverter (U) operates by the control signals
      from DPC but magnetron is not oscillating
      1. Magnetron
      2. Loose lead wire connector CN703
      3. H.V. Inverter (U)

    I can replace it with a brand new one for $160, and I'm only out of having one for a couple of hours. That sounds pretty good compared to the time, hassle, and cost of fixing it.

      @@norcal715 I hear that! For over six years in my huge apartment complex, I have trash-picked so many items, that if I had kept them all, I'd EASILY be worthy of an episode of "The Hoarders." Among them are a multitude of vacuum cleaners and pedestal fans, most of which are salvageable. Also some microwaves (including the same Panasonic model you have in this video with H97). But so far, I am too gun-shy to fix those. But occasionally I have found a working one.
      What I don't keep or give away to friends and relatives, I give to the Goodwill. My local Goodwill also accepts scrap metal and scrap electronics. This means I pull out even busted electronics out of the dumpsters! Our condo manager even paid me once to haul away 7 junk TV's. Once, I even found an Intertek queen size power inflatable mattress that worked (though it did leak somewhat), and a handy carrying basket for it. I gave that away over Next-Door.com.

    Mine displayed the code H97. Once I did the reset, it worked again so I didn’t replace anything. Now a week later, it’s spinning but not heating up?

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  11 месяцев назад

      Most likely a weak magnetron. Replace it and do the reset again.

      I am measuring the current on the hot lead of the power cord. You could clamp wither hot or neutral as it enters the microwave. with the same results.

    Would be helpful to have a link to those troubleshooting instructions. I'm trying to troubleshoot mine but can't read that page on the video. Magnetron appears to be fine. What are the other steps and how do I find a replacement HV board?

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  4 года назад +3

      Go to elektrotanya.com in the upper right click "SM search" type in your model number and you can download the entire service manual.

      @@norcal715 Thanks! According to the manual diagnostics the HV board is fine. So it must be the magnetron. Unfortunately doesn't look like they are available anymore.

Tried to find a manual on elektrotanka, jumped through a lot of hoops disabling my ad blockers and other things before I could access a download. What they claimed was a service manual was a user's manual, so no further ahead. Any help would be appreciated in getting some service info or that instruction sheet you showed. TIA. 👍👍
