Chuck, I realized the reason I like your drive-a-longs so much is that your criticism is always constructive. Rather than getting frustrated or angry about something that doesn’t quite work right yet you just acknowledge the curious behavior and recognize that as an area that needs work. Less tiring than watching some get angry/upset or whiny when something doesn’t yet work.
THANK YOU bro. You get it! You typed in words, how I've been feeling with some of these Tesla RUclipsrs for a year now. Ever since v12.3 released people seem to think FSD wasn't going to still be a work in progress. His curiosity is what makes him the best at testing FSD versions.
I have been binge watching the FSD v13 RUclips clips. Very impressive. Clearly most of the clips show issues with parking and reversing. It’s a couple of iterations behind the rest of the functionality but I assume it will catch up soon. Outside these issues, it is all impressive. I am struggling to find critical interventions in the clips. Early days but all of this give me confidence that we can get to unsupervised FSD in 2025 or latest 2026.
You will never ever get unsupervised Fsd because that would require shifting liability to Tesla. Musk rat would never. Unsupervised Fsd is vaporware like deep rain vision wiping actually working.
Guys, thank you so much for all of the testing you are doing. While it may be a cool thing and a benefit for most folks to let the car drive instead of having to deal with it ourselves, my brother and I BOTH have intellectually disabled sons (ages 18 and 22) who will soon benefit from autonomous vehicles in ways that will be quasi life-changing for them. It will also free up their parents a bit to be frank. Great work, and 2 dads from the internet thank you. Peace Out. FSD for the Win!
You noticed! I screwed it up last time by having the channels switched.. i figured it out this time.. My camera is mounted upside down.. so my mics were reversed on the recording last time. In any case.. thanks for noticing i got it right this time.
3:50 pro-tip: if the nav times out and you want the choices again, tap the next turn section of the route plan to force it back to overview with alternate routes displayed. (Also the map orientation button in the upper right will do the same thing, albeit with an extra button press)
As an Australian, I am always perplexed by FSD drivers insisting that cars should be going faster than the speed limit. We used to have a campaign encouraging people to "wipe off five", which meant it is acceptable to drive 5kmh under the speed limit. That's not to say nobody drives over the limit, but it's not an expectation. If you are driving at the speed limit, nobody will honk or get upset.
I agree. Doing 25%+ higher than the "limit" seems bizarre. Australia is too much of a nanny-state regarding high speed, but I think the American disregard for speed limits is a bit too cavalier.
In America, more than 90%(I think) people drive above the speed limits. On low speed roads, 5 mile above is acceptable; on highways, 10 mile above is okay.
Australia is so spread out…and you still tolerated driving 5 below? Thats wild. In spread out areas of USA we have areas where the speed limit is 85 and people still speed.
The UK is covered in speed cameras. Going about 10% faster than the limit is not generally prosecuted, but FSD speed limit tolerances will have to abide by the law here to be accepted by the government.
There was a slow down or phantom brake, were Chuck noticed it and commented in the video. FSD saw a false positive traffic light, you can briefly see in the visualisation. Hence it caused the slow down. When you scale this to many cities or countries, there are still many bugs to fix. Maybe give a few more years for Robotaxi.
Reducing phantom breaking requires a lot of extra compute. It requires more memory and more processing and more importantly requires more time. I was not surprised to see it reappear in v12.5. I expect it will drop off for AI4 vehicles in an upcoming release. That may not be the case for HW3/AI3 vehicles due to their limitations. Phantom breaking refinements are trimmable comfort features. Most of us do not appreciate what the FSD team has done. FSD is not a continuous solution. Instead, it is a series of rapid sequential solutions that are pinned together to form what appears to be a continuous driving solution. You can see this when FSD has an issue and produces minor oscillations in its solution from step to step (the "gitters"). They occur most often when FSD is trying to build a complex sequence of solutions such as an unprotected left turn or a U-turn.
I agree, I think HW3 is cooked. I just upgraded to a 2024 M3P from a 2019, very happy with the decision. I was able to transfer FSD, along with other incentives, it was a no brainer.
@@marsstarlink3235 We don’t have concrete evidence for that. Elon has mentioned it, but he’s said a lot of things. V13 is trained on HW4 and runs on HW4, so it’s not like hardware 4 is some beta. I totally agree that HW3 owners deserve an upgrade. But it’s tough to imagine how much work and resources Tesla would need to retrofit all those vehicles.
@@Neubs-xv8tw the cognitive dissonance is showing. Elon stated if he cannot achieve FSD with HW3 then he will offer a free solution to all affected. Otherwise lawsuits for false advertisement, and his own words will put him on the stand.
@@marsstarlink3235 I think he implied the retrofit would only be available (for free at least) for FSD purchasers. Those who purchased before a certain date, most likely.
32:18 Just in case anyone comes here arguing in favor of LiDAR: LiDAR would not have been able to see that chain AT ALL, even 10 years from now. With cameras, it will eventually improve to the point it can see it, because cameras actually do pick up the data necessary to perceive the chain. LiDAR, at that distance, would skip over the chain. There would be no datapoint on that chain with LiDAR. It's a hardware (physics) limitation.
Chuck I love the video. One thing I noticed with the past 2 videos is the screen recording is way lower quality compared to past videos. Just seeing if something changed in how you do the recording? Over all I love the commentary of these videos.
I’d love to see a test drive using the same drive mode from start to finish for consistency. Switching modes mid-drive, especially while the car is trying to make a decision at a certain speed, seems to throw off its decision-making. To fully compare drive modes, it would be ideal to have two cars heading to the same destination-one in hurry mode and the other in standard or chill. The road should be a bit busy to make the test more realistic.
13:39 what I'm thinking is that this form of 'trip completion' is robotaxi related. But once banish is released that would be used to actually track down a surefire parking spot and then activate park assist. Just my speculation
Okay, I know people always get onto about stuff, but I just wanted to let you know this, only because I just looked at the release notes. It says that destination parking is upcoming, so it won't "officially" park in a parking spot or supercharger spot yet because that will come in a further update. 😁
As exciting as it is to see where FSD is going there are a legion of us HW3 owners waiting with bated breath to see whether or not we'll just need pitchforks or if we'll need lit torches also.
I really think the profiles are overall way it drives. The max speed will make it so it doesn’t go past a certain speed. But even in chill if it feels it can go over on streets it will
At 42:45 when you pulled the car straight into a parking spot so you could have FSD back it out into traffic, I saw a small window pop up on the screen that said, "OH CHUCK, HAVE I NOT TAUGHT YOU ANYTHING, IT'S ALWAYS BEST TO BACK INTO A PARKING SPOT SO I CAN PULL OUT FORWARD." :)
I couldn't sleep last night. I was too eager to get it but i didn't get it today morning. I Hope Tesla is watching these clips and taking notes to improve it.
16:27 It should ask you what parking spot you want to select. For example at V2 superchargers you don't want to be parking next to another car if at all possible given the posts share power.
Some disappointing moments in a very empty carpark. But those tight reverse parking examples impressed me. It's better than me, which ain't saying much, but still.

21:27 - Thanks Chuck 🙏 The wait is real, but technology should progress in the fastest ways possible. HW3 people are still having great drives with 12.5.4.2 as it is - extremely practical & super helpful for daily driving. The new speed profiles look nice and I love the automatic takeoffs and parking. Can’t wait until this arrives in some form or fashion for HW3!
This is great and all but make sure you don't become the problem by being distracted well driving, you left your blinker on for a very long time and I also believe it didn't give you auto park for the right side because of your turn signal, was signaling left.
With higher resolution cameras feeding HW4, it was interesting that it could not detect the chain across the parking space. This leads me to think that the HW3/HW4 issue is not the cameras, but more to do with processor speed and/or memory.
Chuck, when it wouldn't reverse to do that 3-point U-turn in the cul de sac last night, or reverse to park into the Supercharger spot, being that v13.2 DID reverse for others, when it didn't for you, I would have engaged FSD just to disengage it to get the opportunity to leave a voice message telling the team that 13.2 wouldn't reverse for you. If it should reverse for anyone, it should be you. :)
I agree with you, but rest assured, my video's accomplish the same thing. I have been told first hand from Palo Alto. You are right though. I should have at least hit the snapshot button for logging data. I will try to do better. So much going through my head while recording.
32:20- HW 3 M Y has had the same exact skinny pole gate fence thing in front of it a half dozen times over the past several months and every time, without fail, it would have pulled forward and hit the gate without driver intervention.
Thanks Chuck and AJ. AI development is expensive and training is particularly expensive (time, compute, and $$$). Pre-release FSD models have to be trained for specific vehicle models (3, S, X, Y, CT, and Semi). One model had to be picked to be the lead model for current FSD AI development. FSD development has be accelerated by moving development to AI4/HW4. The obvious vehicle choice was Model Y. The AI4/HW4 Y has acquired the most HW4 data. Once there is a verified build for the AI4/HW4 Y, a verifiable build for the AI4 3 should follow shortly and for AI4 S and X thereafter. Verifiable builds for the CT and for the Semi will take longer. CT and the Semi both require synthesized datasets based upon data from the other HW4 vehicles. The synthesized datasets for CT and for Semi will be more problematic that those for S and X. In addition CT and Semi have more complex drive control structures than the 3, S, X, or Y. This requires more model memory, more compute power during both training and during inference, more time to reach equal next step solution during inference. The increased complexity of the driving solutions for CT and Semi introduces more potential places for failures to appear during model validation. As a result of these basic facts of life, the likely sequence of future releases until the cybercab arrives is AI4 Y, AI4 3, (AI4 S, X, and CT) and later HW3 (Y, 3, S, X) and HW4 Semi. When AI5 and the cybercab arrive, I expect a development to shift away from AI4 Y to AI5 cybercab. The cybercab will clearly have the most demanding autonomy requirements. At that point in time, POV releases will then appear in sequence as cybercab, then other AI5 models, then AI4 models, and HW3/AI3 FSD will likely be deprecated. We are already seeing what could be early issues with HW3 running FSD versions above 12.4. I don't see how inference issues that will be fixed with AI5 will be portable to AI3 given the memory limitations and more importantly the processing speed limitations of AI3. V13 appears to be smoother and better at lanes choices and lane changes than V12. I was wrong after watching your late night drive on V13.2. The FSD team has clearly rolled out reverse including multipoint turns with V13 and reduced the number of (NTHSA) double intersection stops. Both still need work but they are significant improvements. Chuck, it would be nice if you had a route designed to see if FSD will break the law. It needs to include active school zones, transitions from high to unsigned low speed roadways, opportunities to cross well marked double yellow lines (usually occurs at left turns on divided multilane roadways without raised medians), opportunities to go straight from turn only lanes (occurs most often at freeway entrances), turn right on red at no-right on red intersections (has to get to the front of the line while red), and run red lights (although rare, there are 2 intersections in Greenville where V12.5.4.2 regularly has issues). You should run the route obeying speed limits and determine if any of the drive modes will follow all traffic laws. At a minimum, FSD is likely to need to pass a basic driver's test to get NTHSA approval for autonomous driving. There will also be issues if FSD can't getting away from parking locations as you have repeatedly identified in your two V13 drives. Martin (my HW3 Y) and I are waiting somberly. He has driven over 10 thousand miles in FSD mode (with varying degrees of supervision). He has been informed that he will get replaced by an AI4 Y once AI5 arrives. 🤔😢 Hopefully he won't try to take it out on me between now and then. 🤕
PS: Reportedly, major FSD releases v11 -> v12 -> v13 represent significant upgrades to the structure of the underlying AI model. Lesser .dot releases are tweaks to the basic model that do not substantially change the underlying structure of the model.
Would you please try the following. Open the Tesla browser, search for hotels. Select a hotel. Make a reservation. You won’t be able to finish because you can’t select your state. This would have been useful on a recent road trip I took in my Model 3.
Chuck, your Tesla FSD impression videos are the GOLD STANDARD. Tks ! Now to WAIT to see what kinds of improvements are made to the Cybertruck'a FSD with V13. I wonder if the WAIT for HW4 sedan FSD versions to trickle down to the HW4 Cybertrucks and HW3 sedans ... I wonder if the wait times will decrease once all the supercomputing in Austin is up and running?
38:45 for sure, Cortex got your uploaded intervention, and car downloaded a vector database entry to retrain your local model on your data. I know they said no incremental updates of the model, but a Vector DB update of the local model is totally feasible.
Those v13 Videos are so exciting. :) But also very saddening here in Europe... because we dont get it... till 2028 it seems. 😢 Even ASS is nerved here to 6meters (20feet) distance between phone and car and drive range around 12meter (40feet) I will watch that fully, tomorrow after work.
As a HW3 (2022 M3LR AWD) owner, i'm not expecting much more from what we have seen. I didn't even really understand what FSD really was when i bought my car. I mean saw it was there, but i didn't really believe it i guess. If i want FSD I will wait till 2026 or whenever AI5 comes out. I'm good with AutoPilot/AutoSteer.
Ai bugs are not the same as software bugs. AI errors are more insidious. One group will appear at random in any current solution. There are no lines of code to correct to fix most AI bugs. You have to feed the model with more training data until the errors resolve or you have to change the model.
@darwinboor1300 agreed. It's not changing a line of code for example to fix a bug as it is to change the weights in the model via training. It's a paradigm shift in the way we think with this new evolution of "software".
47:47 that would be such an awkward parallel park for me to do since it’s on the opposite side of a wrong way street. The car did such a good job there.
So I am a big watcher Of these videos I watched yours I Watch dirty tesla's etc And What I notice is that The profile go away If there's a lot of buildings or houses Close together if that makes sense I don't know if that's it but that's what I notice
Chuck, I very much enjoy your evaluations of the FSD updates.. I have a 2023 Model 3 with 3rd gen hardware, so unfortunately I am never going to get this superior instantiation into my vehicle. I love my car, but this constant bait and switch by Tesla is annoying.
How will this be solved: Visibility is critical for Full Self-Driving (Supervised) to operate. Low visibility, such as low light or poor weather conditions (rain, snow, direct sun, fog, etc.) can significantly degrade performance.
Acceleration curve the same in different modes is insane. What are they for if they aren't for that? How fast/smooth someone guns it off the line is 1/2 or more of ones assessment of how chill a driver is.
About speed profile indication, so far the videos I saw when the car was able to do a 3 point turn there was no speed profile indication, same in your video.
Thanks for the great video. Just one nitpick. The sound is way too stereo with very different sounds coming L/R which makes it unpleasant to listen to with headphones for me. Thanks for all the work
Since you mentioned hdwr 3…Latest FSD on my 2019 M3 hdwr 3 drives on the solid centerline and crosses it by 6-12” at random times for no reason and comes within 16-18” of guardrails around some corners, again for no reason, on State Highway 377 in Kula, Hawaii. Not close to ready for me
I'm hoping Tesla will honor Elon's pledge to upgrade older models 3 and Y if the older CPUs can't handle the newer AI. I predict, based on very few software releases for us peons, that the older hardware will never be able to do the good stuff.

Do more parking: angle, 90 degree, driveway. Both driving in and pulling out.
When chuck has to take control, a human driving the car seems so primative
41:54 looks like it slowed down when chill mode was re-enabled
The HW3 FSD owners will raise hell Chuck. We are 70% and Musk has to respond or face the consequences of very negative publicity.
I don't think Elon cares about negative publicity anymore
just amazing
Still a few years from reality, but amazing to see the progress.
Those v13 Videos are so exciting. :)
But also very saddening here in Europe... because we dont get it... till 2028 it seems. 😢
Even ASS is nerved here to 6meters (20feet) distance between phone and car and drive range around 12meter (40feet)
I will watch that fully, tomorrow after work.
Just after your parallel parking test in the neighborhood, it slowed down for a phantom stop light on the screen.
19:54 lane departure avoidance system engaged ... in the car ahead.
I don’t have a friend who likes FSD as much as i do. 😅
I can’t never buy a car without FSD
Holy negatives. “I can only buy a car with FSD”
So you can't buy a car with FSD?
Watch out for the grammar police 😂
I think the speed profiles disappear in parks. Because it the same thing in your night time drive in the same spot.
Software bugs are real. The end.
Chuck and AJ FSD road trip in India, I'd pay to see that.
47:47 that would be such an awkward parallel park for me to do since it’s on the opposite side of a wrong way street. The car did such a good job there.
Long way to go
So I am a big watcher Of these videos I watched yours I Watch dirty tesla's etc And What I notice is that The profile go away If there's a lot of buildings or houses Close together if that makes sense I don't know if that's it but that's what I notice
There's a fine line between confidant and aggressive.
The speed profiles come and go because for some reason they don't have reverse enabled
Chuck, I very much enjoy your evaluations of the FSD updates.. I have a 2023 Model 3 with 3rd gen hardware, so unfortunately I am never going to get this superior instantiation into my vehicle. I love my car, but this constant bait and switch by Tesla is annoying.
Good vid
How will this be solved: Visibility is critical for Full Self-Driving (Supervised) to operate. Low visibility, such as low light or poor weather conditions (rain, snow, direct sun, fog, etc.) can significantly degrade performance.
Acceleration curve the same in different modes is insane. What are they for if they aren't for that? How fast/smooth someone guns it off the line is 1/2 or more of ones assessment of how chill a driver is.
i wonder how you fix that blinding sunlight thing???
Add sensors that don't have that issue to compensate for when the sun blinds the cameras
About speed profile indication, so far the videos I saw when the car was able to do a 3 point turn there was no speed profile indication, same in your video.
The future has arrived
Thanks for the great video. Just one nitpick. The sound is way too stereo with very different sounds coming L/R which makes it unpleasant to listen to with headphones for me.
Thanks for all the work
Since you mentioned hdwr 3…Latest FSD on my 2019 M3 hdwr 3 drives on the solid centerline and crosses it by 6-12” at random times for no reason and comes within 16-18” of guardrails around some corners, again for no reason, on State Highway 377 in Kula, Hawaii. Not close to ready for me
47:14 it sees a light on top of the school zone and it slows down. I think because the light is not on it does it as an abundance of caution?
looking forward to perfect UPLs
48:50 surprising that it needed to be encouraged to start here.
I'm hoping Tesla will honor Elon's pledge to upgrade older models 3 and Y if the older CPUs can't handle the newer AI. I predict, based on very few software releases for us peons, that the older hardware will never be able to do the good stuff.
