Being from Brazil, the story we learn in school is that the Portuguese first tried the enslave indigenous populations (who already had a non-commercial version of slavery going on), but it proved too difficult. Most of the time they would just die from diseases or escape into the jungle and the Portuguese would never see them again. The Portuguese, however, ran a successful small scale pilot of African slavery in places like Madeira, so they were probably stoked to bring African slaves to America when indigenous slavery was a bust.
