As always, a really helpful segment, thanks Ben and Cody. Also, loved the 50 Ways lick, too.

My room is tiny, my drums wide open. Moving to a wide open space i know I have to reign em in a little bit

I’ve done a fair amount of gigs in different rooms now, and indeed, at first every space would surprise me, and I wouldn’t understand why a cymbal, or a snare drum suddenly “didn’t work”. Now I try to look at a new space beforehand, ideally other performances, to then get the right gear to the room, with the right tools. Example: I rarely like e-rings on snare drum, but at the most recent gig, where it was a small space, with a far microphone technique, the e-ring was perfect.

By seeing your branded bandana, I have come to the idea, some times ago, that you could release a graduated drum key, so you can use that wonderful technique of measuring the hoop heigh without having to carry a ruler around. And please if you actually do it, make a dual inches / centimetre version. And do not forget about me for shared patent! lol

I played a wedding last week, and found the room surprisingly live in spite of the carpeting and softgoods. My small tom just wouldn't stop singing, having a very long note. Only having gels on hand, I was up to five on this thing, after trying a couple of different tunings to no avail, and it was still ringing. Meanwhile, my FT sounded choked, with little sustain. Unfortunately, there was no time for any real adjustments, as the ceremony was performed in the same space with a quick turn around for the reception. Admittedly, I wasn't happy with the overall sound of the band for this reason, but the attendees were all very pleased with out performance. That's all that really matters...

What about large dry rooms…I.e. outdoors stages with very to little natural reverb. Maybe this is more about the sound quality of the room vs the size?

All of this applies to every environment- from stage to studio to rehearsal space.

Nooooo!! How did this happen? Omg were you hitting them? Oh god oh god. Umm. I’ll get some cases and we’ll just get rid of them and noone has to know. What do I tell Ludwig?
