Now as someone who plays Tetris for fun (I have a NES cart of Tetris) playing against others already looks crazy. (I've seen some Puyo Puyo Tetris footage that has matches over in *seconds*. That's some scary stuff.) Playing competitively against 98 others and winning first looks even tougher. But this...is nothing short of maddingly brilliant. (This is also the reason I'm not getting Puyo Puyo Tetris or Tetris 99. I'm not risking just minding my own business then getting my ass kicked by someone like *this*. Because one of the few things more impressively terrifying than getting your ass kicked by someone who has at least 50 more backup plans than you is getting your ass kicked by someone who has at least 50 more backup plans than you and curbstomps you to the beat of super catchy music that gets stuck in your head.)
watching doremy's videos has taught me stuff about tetris 99 that the game never showed me. like you can keep rotating pieces as they nearly fall into place until you get them exactly where you want them, you can swap your current piece for a reserve one apparently, and of course you can go as fast as you can push buttons. when i get my own switch back from being repaired, I'm gonna play tetris 99 so hard. i may never be a top tier player, but by golly I'm gonna go fast edit: also it took watching these videos for me to realize that clearing lines immediately isn't the best strategy. you gotta set them up to be cleared, and save it for a strategic moment. maybe that's obvious, but not to new-player me still dazzled by "ooh look tetris on a handheld console"
All you need here is the best hand-eye coordination, faster than machine reflexes, the best rhythm the universe has ever seen, and inhamane levels of skill at Tetris
