I finally managed to upload a translation. I know I've been quite absent lately, and I fear I have to tell you I only have one week off before I won't be again able to upload videos for another month. I'm seriously sorry :(

He is just practically saying " I know it's bad but fuck it."
Yea
That's literally what it means, I'm French for the record, look how nice I am 😊
French Once-ler is the most honest Once-ler.
The only one admitting it's bad.
+Supershadow301 In the greeo dub he says that he doesn't know what bad means, and that he can do whatever he wants because he is not feeling shame
Lol in the Hungarian dub he asks "How could I be the bad guy?" and claims that 'his personality isn't evil'
And it's only the European French Once-ler who's honest -- the French Canadian one says something along the lines of "I'm not so mean"
agentlolipop001 deee
English: Not that Bad com 'on
France: I'm evil deal with it
*holi*
This one gives a different vibe than the others. In the others he's undermining what he's doing, saying it can't be that bad.
This one makes it seem like he's a douche who doesn't care that he's killing everything
DeluxeTux5249 I think this is because we, as french people, are complete douches so we can identify to him lmao
Mae Je suppose que cela a du sens XD
DeluxeTux5249 Ah mais totalement 😂😂

(looking at you, emmanuel)
In French he atmits that what he is doing, is bad. O.o'
Laurentiusje Yeah, I'm a bit confused too ^^"
I still have to decide if I like these lyrics or not, because on the one hand, there's that "it's bad, but never mind" which is totally disarming, but on the other, there are several passages I find really interesting (I really adore that "It’s bad, I don’t know what has come over me")
we frenchs are blunt like that ^^

I actually adore this and how blunt Once-ler is compared to the English version and how I'm the English version he almost tries to justify his actions. That and the fact that I adore the French language
I don't know why, but sometimes, I feel french translations are indeed more blunt that english original dubs...
Because in the original movie you saw how he was slowly making more and more decisions (the Once-ler) and trying to justify himself. There was even a scene where he talked to himself. In the new movie this part was put in a song, so it's actually 'wrong' of the Once-ler to admit he knows that it's bad in the song, because it would mean he doesn't care. But he does care, and that's the point: He cares but tries to ignore the fact that it's bad.
Thanks you i am french and i love the english language/ Merci à vous je suis français et j'aime la langue anglaise
Why tf are french translators so good at adding to stories messages? stg this song is so much better in french, it seems more akin to what they originally were gonna write for this song in the demo track "Biggering" and i really appreciate that the french kids who saw this got a good message about corporate greed without the fluff of "oh, we didn't know that what we were doing is bad" seriously, thank you france.
Oh no prob
@Caitlyn Carvalho the response might be the once-ler beacause look at the attacks
I had watched the film in French and the music scared me when I was a child, but I liked it anyway
I am french and i agree
Welp, happy that my country makes some peoples so happy 'bout it!
And I agree too. We have some of the greatest thing, right?
Even though the most famous are english or smtg like that.
I truly appreciate this! It's always so interesting to hear these songs in different languages...entire meanings and tones can change. Thanks so much, truly. I hope I can repay your kindness someday.
Faye Scarlet There's no need to repay what I've done. All I do here, I do it for my own pleasure, simple like that. I really have fun translating songs and I'm glad to see people enjoying them, that's it ^-^
***** You are kind. Thank you again, truly! :D
It does bring me to a random question, and I do apologize for how rude it will sound...but why are so many European songs on RUclips off-key? I can always tell, and it drives me up the wall. It's weird.
I really like the fact that he know that he is the bad guy , for me it’s logical , he know that he break the swear he make with the lorax.
And this is so much powerfull to see the « main » character turn evil like that .
When i first see it i was like « ho crap is this really a children show cause this is turning scary »
And thas a good thing cause like that the song have a real impact.
Well that’s what i think...
Weird, in english it says 'how bad can I be' but here it says it's bad but who cares
This is because it is impossible to translate a song in an other language with the exact original meaning, while keeping the rhyme
And having roughly the same amount of syllables.
AshTheMinecraft OuAis MAis cest mieux en français
Canadien French did it :P
In french canadian he says "I'm not that bad"
You can't translate a song word by word ;)
I thought the french one would be cringy to me as a french when you've first listened to the english one but hey, that's pretty good !

Honestly, I think that sometimes, the exact meaning of words is lost, instead to get something that seems less off in french dubs. The reason why the Onceler says "It's bad, but never mind" is because "C'est mal, mais tant pis" sound really like "How bad can it be".
(If you were wondering, I'm french... Bonus for ya: "gash-pilleur" is a porte-manteau of the french words "gâcher" (to waste, in a non productive way) and "pilleur" (something like robber), probably because the Onceler "steals" the main resource of the forest and "wastes" those trees on thneed.)
Supershadow301 Je pense plus que ça vient de "gaspilleur"
Oh well, kinda liking it.
Maybe it's because I'm french candian, but C'est mal, mais tant pis sounds like you're saying it's bad but who cares.
@@kykyt-t6170 Well, "tant pis" has a similar meaning to "who cares" most of the time. Here "nevermind" works too through implication: "nevermind (that it's bad)" ("tant pis (si c'est mal)").
@Misaki Pretty much, which is fairly negative compared to the rather neutral "Once-ler"
_Mon dieu_ , I've been looking for the EU/Vraie Francaise version of this movie with _this_ version of the song - but SOMEHOW I keep ending up at the Quebecoise one. Why is _that one_ everywhere but this version isn't now?! Article 13? _What the flip?!?_
Also, a few years too little too late but thanks so much for uploading! ^-^;
He's being completely honest here
Wow, the French version of this song is the more similar to "Biggering" they could have done. It's somewhat creepy.
1:31 voulez-vous just hits different
I know I'm late, but I really like this version ! The lyrics are pretty good and the singer is truly amazing, I'd love to see more of his stuff ! Thank you for uploading this
English speaker here trying to learn French. I actually prefer this version over the English. The lyrics have a more meaning to the onceler's character and the singer has a great voice!!!
The guy who voices him in French is also the voice of twitchy in the Hoodwinked French dub, he played James in the French dub of James and the Giant peach, a few other things too.
Oh yeess
That’s my favorite version while every time I prefer the English version of songs (I’m French) except for Disney cause the French song versions are so clean and incredible !
as a French, I can confirm that this music slaps harder in French version
L'adattamento francese è FANTASTICO per questa canzone particolarmente! Riesce a dare a questa canzone un gradino in più di maturità!
Si...perdonate per come mi sono espressa ieri, ma era mattina, ed ero ancora assonnata! XD
I think the fact that he actually knows what he is doing make a parrallel to real factories and pp like him in real life that destroy the environnement for consomation purpose and perfectly know what they are doing but don’t care at all since it’s bringing money. As a french person I use to like the english version meaning more, because it fîts better the caracter, but now I think I like the french meaning more than the english one.
This version is my favorite
1:49 Best part
yeah
I know I’m 7 years late but I would like to say I think these lyrics are better to the Once-lers development. In the English version, it seems he doesn’t know what he is doing when he is cutting down trees which makes his development seem incomplete or undermined. But here he speaks as if he knows exactly what he is doing and he is not sorry for it. So at the end when he regrets what he did and even waters and helps grow trees, it has a bigger impact and shows how far he really has come.
Le Gash-Pilleur (gaspilleur) means waster in French and (pilleur) mean looter or plunder in French
Yes
The other french version, from Quebec, says ''I'm not *that* bad'', which I find very interesting!
I've been thinking. If the "gash-pilleur" is already aware of what he's doing is bad. Doesn't that break "The past tree falls" scene? He can't be sad because his business falled. If so, he wouldn't care about the animals going away and the Lorax getting his ass out.
I think that version of "How bad can i be" doesn't make sense with that other scene. Of course it's just my opinion.
Not quite. It still makes sense, it just made the scene more complex. In english the emotional build up and pay off are very obvious, the Onceler was ignorant of the consequences his actions had until the damage was already done. So once he actually sees what he did he feels bad in the "The last tree falls" scene. Its very simple and isnt too thought-provocing.
The french Onceler on the other hand is very much aware of what hes doing and actively chooses to priorities himself over the damage hes doing to others. He talks big and bigger and bigger and does worse and worse UNTIL the last tree falls and *it actually hit him what he has done!* He justified his horrible actions and behavior until he actually had to FACE them.
Its like when you rage and complain about your (bad) job to your family and friends, saying more and more things that justify quitting it to the point where you even take the needed steps to do it, but the moment you actually DO quit you kinda just stand there and it crushes down on you what the hell you just DID - what this means for you and your life.
This is basically what happened with the french Onceler. We all can talk big when we plan something or know what we do will come with consequenses so we justify it to ourselves - but the moment you actually have to FACE the consequences the big talk and ignorant/big justifications crumble down and you are left with a reality-check of "oh fuck.. what do I do now?"
Holy crap this sounds pretty good
I love the french voice actor tbh, blud sounded like he was having fun.

As much as I like most French translations with Disney, so much is lost here. He knows it's bad and doesn't care doesn't equal not knowing it's bad. And "I'm never going to say stop" or something really reinforces the idea that he, personally, is doing this, whereas he heavily switches the blame on "destiny" in the original.
This, and Frozen "Libérée, délivrée" are weird translation choices. Really. Changes your whole perspective on a character.
I'm a few years late, but you do realize the original Lorax was meant to be anti corporate and the original version of the Onceler did go "I know this is bad but fuck it I'm doing this and I know this is bad but again fuck it because monopoly companies do this anyway"?
I'm gonna be fair with you here, I personally like how they stuck a lot closer to what the Original Onceler was supposed to be, not just in the book, but also the original draft for this film (see the song Biggering).
Also this isn't by Disney, this is by Illumination, a company from Universial Studios.
I like it cuz the onceler here is actually an evil jerk, he knows danm well what he's doing. He doesn't sugar coat anything and I love it! Its more faithful to the og and gives off biggering vibes
