    Knowing you're not a native french speaker I'm really impressed by your translation :). Just wanted to point out that at 1:06 there is a wordplay on top of the phonetic symetry : "chauves sourient" sounds exactly the same as "chauve-souris" which means "bat" in french. And "glace le sang" has 2 different readings too in french : litteraly "freezes your blood" or figuratively "extremely frightening" or "scares you to death". That's why this song is so great it has a second meaning for a lot of words ;)

      jadou34 Thank you very much, but to be honest, I had to ask for help to a native speaker to solve the most tricky passages (I would have never made it out with "la mort qui prend le mors aux dents" if it weren't for the help I have been given ^^").
      For the passage "chauves sourient", I didn't realize this (mainly because I didn't know what the French for "bat" was ^^"). While, about the "glacer le sang", I'm not 100% sure (since I'm not native English), but I think that the double meaning "freezing blood" and "to be frightened to death" does exist in English too. Thank you very much for your help, really ^-^
      Anyway, among the three languages I somehow speak, among non\Disney songs, this one has the best lyrics I've seen so far (and I just adore the lyrics they wrote for the whole French movie, they're just a wonderful poem).

      As a native English speaker (and a fluent speaker of nothing else), I can testify can that while saying, "something makes your blood run cold," or that, "something froze the blood in your vains," pretty much everyone would understand just, "froze your blood," as meaning extreamly scary or freightening/terrifying.

    I've studied French for years as well as other languages and I can confidently say that almost always the French adaptation is the best among other languages and sometimes it's better than the original. Not only French is a very resourceful language with one of the widest lexicons, it's phonology allows for flexibility to sync with the song's tempo and intervals. Combine that with the insane CREATIVITY of French dubbers and you get adaptations that truly capture the tone and atmosphere of songs and always have an element of surprise and originality.

    For the ones who don't know, in french "bat" is said "chauve-souris". Translated literraly it would be "bald mouse" (yes I know, "souris" = "mouse" and it also means "smile") so it's a pun that cannot be translated. "C'est la ville de la nuit, les citrouilles chantent et les chauve-sourient" is a pun in the end, because it makes "it's the town of ne night, pumpkin sing and the baldheads smile" but as I said, "chauves (baldhead) and "chauves-souris" = bats). I have the impression that what I'm saying is unclear AF, sorry, but I hope you get the idea ^^

    I learned this almost 3 years ago for a project in my French class. I spent about a week writing the lyrics on flashcards. Spent another two weeks learning it. I chickened out on the project (singing it in front of the class) and never listened to it (French version) again. But yet, even three years later, I STILL know the lyrics and every time I hear the introduction music my mind goes into French auto pilot and I start accurately singing it word for word. But yet I can't remember what I ate for breakfast. The human mind is truely fascinating.

    I really enjoy the poetry used in the french version of almost every song in this movie. It feels like the amount of pun/stylistic device in french and the level of vocabulary is greater compare to the English version. Also, the singing voice for Jack is just amazing (although you don't get to hear it here).
    English version is still really good, don't get me wrong, I just have a bias for the french version.

    • @farmacerhaiden7979
      @farmacerhaiden7979 4 года назад +8

      Actually, my opinion is that the translators wanted to respect the sound of the original version more than the lyrics on this one. In english it's "everybody scream" which sounds a lot like "crime" (in french it's pronounced "cream"). If they had said the same thing than in english it would have been "tout le monde crie" and the sonority is far less musical. It's true that we lose some sense from the original version but the musicality of the sentence is more respected like this ^^ And considering that the people of Halloween city love all the hateful things like illness or scary stuff it's not exactly a nonsense for them to say that "it's crime city" ^^

    Pour ceux qui disent que la traduction de "les chauve-souris" est fausse, c'est en fait un jeux de mots sur l'animal. Mais la phrase ne veut rien dire si on ne prend pas le sens de "les chauves sourient" 😉
    For those who are telling that the translation for "les chauve-souris" (bats) is false, is in fact a pun with the animal. The sentence doesn't mean anything if we don't understand "les chauves sourient" (the balds one smiled) 😉

    C'est la ville du crime, c'est la ville du crime
    Bienvenue a Halloween
    Je perds la tete, quelquefois je l'arrache
    Avante de disparaitre dans un flash
    Je suis la mort qui prend le mors aux dents
    Je suis le vent qui vous glace le sang
    Moi, je me glisse comme une ombre noire
    Et je transforme vos reves en cauchemars
    C'est ca Halloween, c'est ca Halloween
    Halloween, Halloween, Halloween, Halloween
    I y a des enfants beaucoup trop sages
    On prefere ceux qui ont la rage
    On fait peur - Mais on se domine
    Dans la ville d'Halloween
    On plaisante
    On fait des betises
    Tout le monde attend la prochaine surprise
    Si Jack le squelette, sans tambours ni trompette
    Surgit dans votre dos, vous ne ferez pas de vieux os
    C'est ca Halloween
    C'est la ville du crime !
    Bienvenue a l'epouvantable epouvantail
    Bravo Jack ! T'es un crack
    Vive notre nouveau roi
    Jack la gargouille est le roi des citrouilles
    C'est ca Halloween, c'est ca Halloween
    Halloween, Halloween, Halloween, Halloween
    C'est la ville de la nuit
    Les citrouilles chantent et les chauves sourient.

    My native (and only) language is English...but I think the French lyrics sound more natural and poetic to my ears, nicer rhymes at least. Actually, if I hadn't have always known TNBC as a Disney film, I would've said this was the original.
    Reason I say that is some of the original English lyrics sound a bit awkward in delivery or otherwise out of place to my ears ("in this town, don't we love it now, everybody's waiting for the next surprise"... "Round that corner man, hiding in the traaaash can", "Our man Jaaaack is King of the Pumpkin Patch")

      "'round that corner then hidden in the trash can".
      It says:
      "'round that corner man, hidden in the trash can."
      And i fixed that of "pumpkin patch line"
      "Won't ye please make way for the very special guy?"
      "Our man Jack is king of the very fright."

    In french "bat" is "chauve😁-souris🐭" which means "bald😁-mouse🐭", "they smile" is "ils sourient" (the nt at the end is not pronounced). So "the baldheads smile" is "les chauves sourient" that is pronouced like chauve-souris

    Question for the french natives: Why do they say „notre magnifique cité“? Shouldnt it be „notre cité magnifique“ as french but the adjectives after the noun? 😅

    • @FlamSparks
      @FlamSparks  2 года назад +5

      The position of adjectives in French has a certain degree of flexibility: certain adjectives (but not all!) can be moved before the noun to have a slightly more poetic effect (like in this case).
      There are also very specific instances of adjectives that even change in meaning depending on where they're placed, e.g. the adjective "grand" can mean "big" or "great" depending where you place it: "la ville grande" translates to "the big city", but "la grande ville" translates to "the great city".
      It's one very tricky nuance of this language, and unfortunately it takes a lot of time to get the hang of it. It's also a very advanced level of the language, so you don't have to worry about it if you're still taking the first steps into it.

    • @FlamSparks
      @FlamSparks  2 года назад +2

      If you wish, I linked below a couple of pages (both are in French) where they try to explain the logic in the different placement of adjectives:

This still sounds amazing regardless. I never listened to a song in French before and it was very interesting experience. Thank you for making this translation version.

    • @shibitoobscura3348
      @shibitoobscura3348 Год назад +6

      Guess again. It's not that the French version lacks the words (French vocabulary is actually very rich, much more than English). Lyrics are always different in adaptations and localisation because you need to match the rythm, rimes, puns, cultural références, phrasings and lip synchronisation.
      That's why they aren't really translations but adaptations. A lot of changes have to be made, otherwise it wouldn't work and it would sound awful.

    • @vectorshingetsu5560
