    I just bought this lens 1 month ago, and I like it. I have it mounted on my 70D and will be taking it to Italy in 7 days. I will also bring my 10-18mm STM and a 24mm Canon. Looking forward to seeing how it performs

      Sounds like a good travel kit.

      I have the same 3 lenses for my 80D and think this is the best light combo for travel. I also have a 6D with 2 L lenses a 40mm pancake and a Tamron 150-600 and I keep finding myself reaching for the 80D + 16-300mm all the time...

      Dear Dustin, how do you think the IQ between 16-300mm vs 55-250mm? Like Michael I already got EF-S 10-18mm and 24mm. Need one as a compact telephoto solution on trips. (Ps. I have FF body and 24-105mm) TKS

    Thanks for the to the point review. Sir I m confused. For my Canon 200D will this be much better choice over Tamrons 18-200mm considering that it costs almost three times than that of 18-200. Please guide me. I am a newbie.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад

      It's only a better choice if you think you need the extra focal length. The extra width and telephoto reach is certainly useful, but optically they aren't much different.

  • @internacionalluzdelu

    I was meaning 25.6mm at crop sensor camera. So is there any canon camera that I can really have 16mm whith 16-300mm tamron lens?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 лет назад

      Paula Maria Rodriguez No, but that would true if it were a Canon lens too. The crop factor is applied to ALL lenses mounted on a crop sensor camera. You must multiply the stated focal length by 1.6. Note that the Tamron's 16mm is wider than most zoom lenses - many of them start at 17 or 18mm

    Longshot for a reply but I'll give it a whirl.
    I've just picked this lens up in the Nikon mount to upgrade from my 18-270mm version.
    I'm noticing for me this lens straight up refuses to focus at 300mm, it just makes some noise as usual and does nothing, even if I focus it manually with the ring and get it near where sharp is, and try the AF from that point, it just won't have it.
    did you encounter anything similar?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 месяца назад +1

      I did not encounter anything like that. That sounds like something defective in the lens.

    One mor e question, If i buy a 10mm lens for 70D the camera will stay givig 24.8mm pictures???

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 лет назад +1

      Paula Maria Rodriguez The 10mm lens will give you 10mm (just like this lens will give you 16mm), but the full frame equivalent angle of view for 10mm is 16mm.
      Where is the 24.8mm figure coming from?

      Are you talking about with an adapter? I've never tried that combination, so I can't comment. It definitely doesn't come in a native Olympus mount.

    I wanted your take on the tamron 28-300mm pzd lens over the tamron 16-300mm pzd lens. I understand that the 28-300mm lens is mainly for full frame cameras and also both are of same size, same construction, both take 67mm filters etc but how does it compare against image quality, barrel distortion, chromatic aberration, speed of focus etc?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад +1

      +abhishek deepak I personally liked the 28-300 better myself. I felt like it was optically superior. The specs on the 16-300 are better, but there are fewer optical compromises on the 28-300

    • @abhishekdeepak
      @abhishekdeepak 8 лет назад

      +Dustin Abbott What are the optical compromises on the 28-300mm and how would you say it is superior than the 16-300mm? Do you mean the image quality is better or sharper and if so by how much? Having watched various reviews on both lens, i think both seem to suffer from barrel distortion, chromatic aberration etc which can however be fixed in lightroom. Also how does the tamron compare against the canon 28-300mm L lens in terms of optical quality, sharpness and assuming it is canon l series lens, I think there will no noticeable distortion or aberration.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      abhishek deepak
      I feel like the 28-300 has better contrast, overall resolution, and holds up better on the telephoto end. The Canon L series lens is better optically, but not so much as to make a noticeable difference in real world shooting. Here's a good chart test comparison for you to look at: www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=975&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=295&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=8&APIComp=0

    Hi Dustin. I was wondering if you could help with an issue I have. I recently bought the Tamron 16 to 300 mm lens. I own a Canon 55 to 250 STM lens. I was recently testing the sharpness between these two lenses and noticed that the focal length of the Tamron is actually shorter than the Canon, even though Tamron claim there telephoto focal length is 300mm, it is actually less than my canon at 250mm. When I compared it against my canon lens the Tamron is actually equal to the canon lens at 200 mm focal length which is rather puzzling. Do you know if Tamron and Canon measure their focal lengths differently? They were both used on the same camera Canon 70 D, so should be very similar in focal length. Tamrons lens is actually a 16 to 200 mm when compared with my Canon at least. Just wondering if you noticed this during your tests. Or have ever come across this before when comparing lenses. Thanks Jamie

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      +JPN • What was the distance you were measuring at? Many modern lenses "focus breathe", meaning that they are less than their full focal length at close focus distances (often to help produce better close focus results). At infinity every lens HAS to be within a certain percentage of the stated focal length (all companies usually round up a little).

  • @77.88.
    @77.88. 2 года назад

    It is my understanding that Tamron made a internal zoom lens that does not externally extend my 28-300 lens developed lens creep which it makes it difficult to use manual focus and when you zoom it creeps in and out under its own weight according to the angle??

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 года назад

      The only internal zooms I know of in their lineup is the 70-200mm F2.8 or 70-210mm F4 lenses.

    Dustin,
    Great video. Thanks.
    I have a Tamron 18-200 and am looking at this lens as a replacement.
    When in video mode, my camera picks up the noise of the focusing apparatus in the lens and it really takes away from the video.
    Does this lens make a similar noise?
    Should I consider an off-camera microphone?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      An off camera microphone is always a good idea, as few lenses are truly silent. This lens is certainly quieter, however.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 лет назад +1

      Paula Maria Rodriguez Just remember that 16mm on a crop sensor is the equivalent of 25.6mm on a full frame body. It's wide, but not exceptionally so.

    • @internacionalluzdelu
      @internacionalluzdelu 9 лет назад

      Dustin Abbott I used on my canon 6d Its wide at 16mm but inside of Black Circle. What camera will give you a full 16mm without black circle???

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 лет назад +1

      Paula Maria Rodriguez It's made for a crop sensor camera like your 70D. 16mm is reasonably wide on a APS-C camera, but truly wide focal lengths are more like 10-12mm.

  • @DavidKarlsson
    @DavidKarlsson 7 лет назад

    I have a D5300 and am considering this lens since my body is a crop, do you however think that the 28-300 for full frame cameras is a better alternative even if I have a D5300? You seemed to be more impressed with it.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад

      I do like the 28-300 better as a lens, but this is definitely a more attractive focal length for crop. I don't love the lens, but it does a lot of things pretty well.

    • @DavidKarlsson
      @DavidKarlsson 7 лет назад +1

      Dustin Abbott leaning more toward the new 70-300 DX from Nikon with VR, it seems to be a better choice in the same price range. I have a 35 and a 50mm prime to cover close ranges already. Still haven't decided though. This is such a jungle.
      Thanks for taking the time to answer.

  • @jpn2561

    Thanks for the reply. That must be the issue I'm having I'm focusing to close (indoors) I've tested it at infinity and it is indeed longer than my 250. Thanks very much for clearing that up. Do you think the 28-300 is a better choice for my 70d. Is it noticeably sharper and worth the extra money. Or is the extra focal range and macro feature worth having on the 16-300. I'd love to know your opinion. Thanks again.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад +2

      +JPN • I personally like the 28-300 better, but 28mm isn't super wide on a crop.

    • @DalsPhotography
      @DalsPhotography 8 лет назад +1

      I had the 28-300 in my crop sensor, 60D- The only real drawback was that I sent it to clean, and they broke my lens, telling me that it has been exposed to too much heat... :( The best for me was the close up features. Now I am looking for another lens to replace that one....yet I haven't make up my mind....any suggestions Dustin??? Thanks for your great work, you know I appreciate it a lot! Cheers, From Uruguay

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад +2

      Daniela Argandoña
      I don't really know of a better lens (like this). If you had the current 28-300 it should still be under warranty for several more years. Was it the older version of the lens? The new Canon 18-135 IS USM has amazing focus, but really needs something like a 70/80D or 7DMK2 to take advantage of the AF servo video.

    • @DalsPhotography
      @DalsPhotography 8 лет назад +1

      Dustin, it was bought almost 3 years ago in Switzerland, but I didn't bring it with me :(
      The pple that opened it for "cleaning" told me that there was a motor issue and that it didn't focused anymore, but I tried it manually and it worked awfully, plus it had a zoom noise, as if it wanted to focus but wasn't able to... snifffff, it was a sad moment for me, as in my country, Uruguay, I can't get anylens as those ones, at a normal price.... I know I will invest someday in a Full frame, yet, as nature photographer, I get more from crop sensors. So I am really at the verge of buying the same lens again !!!!! Thank you for your input and support!

      That's a good question. The focal range isn't as useful (not wide enough), though the image quality might be a bit better. You probably will be better off buying the 16-300, but you have to have realistic expectations about what a lens like this can and cannot do.

  • @sumitagg1

    What do you think of this lens vs the canon 15-85mm in terms of image quality?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад

      The Canon has better image quality. The 15-85mm is one of the best non-professional lenses out there. In most cases you will find the typical trade-off is that lenses with smaller zoom ranges have better image quality at the cost of less versatility. Not always true, but probably 98% of the time.

    • @sumitagg1
      @sumitagg1 7 лет назад

      That's a great point. But I'm wondering if the Tamron is just as good at least in the 16-100 range. The dxo mark review suggests that but don't know real world performance

    I was about to replace my (18-55 and 55-200mm) kit lenses with a Tamron 18-200mm and then follow it up later with the 75-300mm (I have a canon 7d) but then I discovered this lens and am wondering if I should stick with plan a) and get the 2 I had originally planned, or get the 16-300, which would cover both, but loses quality after 250mm!? Obviously the advantage would be that it's cheaper in the long run and I wouldn't need to change lenses to get the super zoom, but do you think it's worth the pay off? Basically what I want is someone to tell me what lens I should order!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      I noticed that too after comparing the images between my 70-300mm and this one, both at 300mm. The objects in image from this lens is clearly smaller. I did expect a few mm of "cheat", but tens of mm is too much. Most, if not all, online reviews never check the claimed zoom range, which I think is more important for the all-in-one zooms because you pay money and sacrifice some image quality to get the range you think you are getting.
