    Motown is a shortened version of the term "Motor Town" which at that period of time was a nickname for Detroit because nearly all of the major car manufacturers had their plants and headquarters there. A very large portion of Motown artists were natives of Detroit, (The Temptations, The Supremes, Martha and The Vandellas, etc., etc.) and Motown's headquarters were also there.

    This is one of my all time favorite songs. Yes The Shirelles were certainly one of the first great girl groups from that era but their was another fantastic group, nearly forgotten now, who actually preceded them. In 1958 a group of high school girls who called themselves The Chantels recorded a song called "Maybe" which was kind of a mix of Doo wop, Soul, and a precursor of The Motown Sound. Please try it. I'm sure you'll love the lead singer, Arlene Smith, who was classically trained and appeared at Carnegie Hall at the age of 12.(she was 15 or 16 when "Maybe was recorded).

    "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", sometimes known as "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", is a song with words by Gerry Goffin and music composed by Carole King. Carol wrote a lot of hits that others recorded. it would be almost a decade before she started preforming them herself. The last one she wrote with Gerry was for Aretha Franklin. You make me feel like a natural woman. Aretha surprised Carol at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015 . Carols reaction was beyond priceless.

    This is a Carole King song. She recorded it on her 1971 "Tapestry" album, but much slower than the 1960 Shirelles version. It has a totally different feel, and was a huge hit for her, as was the whole album. One of the best-selling albums in history.

    • @lamusiclover2264
      @lamusiclover2264 3 месяца назад

      @@sannaolsson9106 it's not a cover, it's a remake of a song she wrote herself. She's singing her own song that she wrote in 1960 with Gerry Goffin. Carole King was born in 1942 so she was already writing hit songs in the sixties. She was an in-house writer and wrote lots of fits for girl groups in the 60s. She also wrote The Locomotion, Up On The Roof, , and she also wrote You Make Mee Fee Lke a Natural Woman for Aretha Franklin which is also on her Tapestry album. You should read some music history.

    So groups like the Shirelles and Temptations were crossing over from the R&B stations to mainstream (okay... White) pop music radio and starting to really get air time and noticed. Their sounds were new and refreshing! And then... a little band of 4 long-haired Brits hit the airwaves and Everything changed. The Beatles and the tsunami known as the British Invasion crashed onto our shores and suddenly, no one cared much about the R&B sound. Many of those groups didn't make it thru the onslaught, iirc. Others adapted as best they could. Certainly a tumultuous time in pop music!!

    Why did you read the lyrics beforehand? That should only be done when sung lyrics are known to be very unclear. Even then, lyrics should barely *follow*, not lead the sung lyrics. This is no Italian opera. Prior reading robs songs of power in nearly every case. My urgent suggestion is that reading should trail the singing, even if by a fraction of a second.
    Anywayyy… Motown songs had almost uniformly high production standards, with superior harmonies to most white music in the top 40. Yet so many Motown greats were ignored by white stations, a brutal fact of racism. Here’s a perfect example: “I Want You Back” by the Jackson Five. It *murdered* most tunes on the radio, but seldom was heard. Thank you Maggie.
