Mr Miyagi would be so proud of Chozen. A rage filled, impatient young man who cut corners and often relied on the easy path in his youth, has now become a disciplined man and honourable warrior who’s found his inner peace, while also tapping into his anger in battle, but only to protect others this time. The character development in this show is incredible and that alone is worth watching this series.

Chozen had to find his own path after his defeat in KK2. In many ways,he had it FAR worse than Daniel. An entire village would have shunned him and he had to rebuild and redeem himself.
Sato would be proud of the man Chozen had become.

    • @Holden308
      @Holden308 Год назад +25

I honestly think Sato would have been more proud seeing how his nephew, who was basically the son he didn't have, turned out after all.
If Mr. Miyagi would be proud of anyone it would be, again, Daniel. Instead of continuing to fight them, he's made peace with Johnny, with Chozen and even with Mike Barnes. After all, Mr. Miyagi hated fighting.

Well said! My personal dream scenario for the end: Robby ends like Daniel back in the day, in a no rule fight to the death. He is amost death since his opponent, some kind of killer Teenager from Mexico or Korea, is too strong. Johnny cries and thinks his son will die now...and then we hear the drum.
Like back in the day Sato, Yukie and Miyagi stood there, this time Chozen, Kumiko and Daniel would stand there, Chozen and Daniel with the drum in their hand, giving Robby his final instruction what to do to survive. Then he uses it and wins, protecting himself and Tory, like Daniel protected Kumiko back in the day.
This would be the ultimate redemption for Chozen. Doing the same what his uncle Sato and Miyagi did back in the day, when they helped Daniel to survive, this time Chozen and Daniel would help Robby to survive.
This would give me so many goosebumps. After all these years, a technique from Miyagi-Do would save the life of Johnny s son in the end...and maybe should Tory be Kreese s granddaughter, her life too. Nothing could be better. It would be like a closing circle.

Indeed. And this shows what having mercy actually means. Showing mercy is a risk that can go either way. Daniel spared Chozen and he received a life-long protector and friend. Miquel showed mercy on Robby and almost got himself killed but in the end he got a friend for life too. But the 2nd incident could have ended with Miguel dead instead.

I think the scene of the two bowing at Miyagi-san's grave tells you everything. They both descend from the teachings of Miyagi's father. They are "Karate Cousins" as Daniel-san says. Chozen feels a strong personal obligation to Daniel as well, for teaching him the lesson of mercy.
A substantial part of their ideology is explored in S5. It's not just about defending yourself, it's about "defending the village". That's part of the Okinawan history of their school.

To me. This is an homage to the first Ip Man movie back when Master Ip took down 10 black belt karate practitioners.
When Japan invade China, they took over most of where Ip Man lived with his wife and child. He and his family struggled to find food.
The general that led the invading forces was not only a black belt in karate himself but he also brought his top students.
He tasked resident martial artists with challenging his students for bags of rice. The more they defeated in combat, the more food they got. A friend of Ip Man, died during this trial.
And in anger, challenged ten black belts simultaneously. All ten men came at him at once. And what followed in those few minutes could only be described as the most brutal bare handed combat I have ever seen.
Ip Man took them all down. Half of them he killed, the other half that were lucky to survive were either traumatized or crippled for the rest of their lives. They would never fight again. He broke their arms. He snapped their legs. He beat this one guys chest so hard and fast he actually went into cardiac arrest and died. The poor soul that was left standing didn't want to fight him after seeing nine of his colleagues go down. But he marched straight to his death and Ip Man showed no mercy to him.

He fled from China when the Japanese invaded, taking a bullet in the process.
He suffered from a bad opioid addiction.
      Lost his wife to cancer.
      Later died of cancer himself.
He struggled financially to maintain his dojo and knew nothing about finances.
He didn't fight a boxer named Twister who was the heavy weight champion. However, one of his students did but, the boxer wasn't heavy weight champion but was good enough to be considered one.
Took Bruce Lee as a student who later became the greatest kung Fu action star in history and at some point in his life fought the monk Wong Jack Man. To this very day, that fights outcome remains unknown.
And to this day. There is only a single video of Grandmaster Ip Man caught on video. Taken by his son of the exact same Wing Chun routine he practiced on the sparring dummy. He said to his son that he would only demonstrate once. And he filmed it.

Yep, except the Ip Man scene was far more brutal because of his character. We see Chozen through the series as a ruthless fighter, constantly telling LaRusso the necessity of killing, and showing he's nowhere near as pacifistic as Miyagi. So we already know he's not afraid to be vbrutal. But Ip Man was shown to be a graceful man who constantly shows mercy and kindness to those around him. The lead-up to the dojo fight showed him in 2 fights where he demonstrated exactly this. And then the dojo happens and he absolutely snaps. He's cold, efficient, doesn't kill but is even more brutal than Chozen here. It's like watching Miyagi himself start breaking bones and limbs which would be terrifying to watch.

Also @ 3:16 , the framing of the scene is perfect, whether intentional or not. "Strike first, strike hard, no mercy". Chozen showed that when necesarry and provoked to war, Miyagi-Do style karate can accomplish all 3 of Cobra Kai's tenets, and still be on the right path, rather than the dark and hateful one. Miyagi was master of the peaceful, defensive form. Sato who taught Chozen, must've been a master of the offensive form. That's what sets Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai apart. Miyago-Do has both a war and peace form. Cobra Kai is a style "perpetually at war".
