That crown lock is an identifying feature and what separates this watch from about 50 others in the same price range. For me personally, its a reason to buy it rather than avoid it.
I bought one for my 30th bday in black it’s beautiful and I love it for the crown lock.
The reason for the canteen crown cover is because the first Hamilton frogman watches (also called the US NAVY Bush ship) from the late 1940s and 1950s were made with a canteen crown cap cover.
I like the crown guard thingie, just because it's different
The crown lock is what sets this watch apart from so many others. I like it.
I have this watch in black, at first the crown lock bothered me because it was hard to wind. 80 hour power reserve trumped that though and now it's a non issue for me. Unbelievably I get more compliments on this watch than all others in my collection which I have about 14. Half of which are more expensive. I have a Longines Hydroconquest also which is in the same price range and the Hamilton is the better watch.
Hamilton watches have great history.
I had the same view i.e. “they just don’t do anything for me”. I changed my mind with the Hamilton Khaki Automatic (42mm).
Now that this Frogman is out, I’m doubling down! This one looks great!!

I’m a huge Hamilton fan. I have the Khaki Frogman from 2005 or so. It’s titanium as this one is stainless steel. Going to have to get this one. Love it. I also love the crown- I’ve heard another reviewer mention incivta and I don’t see that at all. Hamilton watches are “American “ classics with a long history. Nice review. Can’t wait to order mine.
Great watch. The bezel is fantastic. The bracelet is pretty good too. Has an on the fly adjustment built in.

Ta a great piece I own the big one in titanium with red bezel, I think Hamilton its a great brand, I own an XWind chrono quartz and a Ventura Elvis 80 in S Steel and i loved it… great review congratulations

I'm liking it. I get the reaction to the cap, but on the wrist, the whole package is kinda nice. It breaks the monotony of every-diver appearance, and it doesn't look bad, maybe it even looks premium. Although I would 100% find a different band. Unfortunately I saw that the steel version is a lot of blingy high polish, so thats really unfortunate. I think my overall reaction is that I would be interested in one if they offered a non-cheese-ball, high-end metal band.
The crown guard is most definitely overkill. As you demonstrated very well, it's easier to operate the crown upside-down... Maybe the designers could have thought about putting the monstrosity on the bottom to make it easier to use. Otherwise it's a nice enough watch. I think they just tried too hard to make it different. Ironically, they seemed to have homaged the Ali Express brand Steeldive/Addiesdive with that engraved back design!🤪
You'll never forget to screw down the crown with that crown lock. If it's flapping around in the wind, screw it down. I think it's very well thought out. The watch looks stunning IMHO. Having a water resistance of 30 bar (300), is more than adequate. The H-10 movement is rock solid, even though having it serviced is a bit of a pain. It has to be laser calibrated. It is super accurate though. I have the Hamilton Khaki field Titanium Auto 42mm: H70545560. I love the no nonsense simplicity of the watch. It has the H-10 movement. It gains about 0.5 to 1.00 sec every 3 days. It's a shame this Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman, has ended its production run.

The Spirit of Liberty, the Murph, and about three variants of the Khaki Field have made their way into my watch case, and they're some of my absolute favorite watches. Their divers though... yeah I don't like that crown guard and I'd much rather have an Orient Kamasu or Triton on my wrist.
I kind of see the similarly with the invicta russian diver regarding the crown lock, but this one is great engineered and gives it a diver tool look like, love it.
Why not just make this with normal crown guards and they have a winner.
Because then it would not be a reissue of an iconic military watch. It would be like reissuing the 1959 Cadillac with no tail fins. Hamilton has other options without the crown lock.

Yeah my victorinox dive master 500 is 500m resistant, that crown guard is so unnecessary for a 300m watch.
If I were I would save a little more for a oris Aqua

I think I have had this watch for 2 years now. Never worn it once. It’s a really well made watch. Nothing wrong with it. Just have no desire to wear it.

Crown lock ruins that watch
The numerals look like a non focused chinese backdoor print like the old Sumo. Not my taste.
No dumb crown guard and a ceramic bezel is what this watch needs. Shame
The Khaki Navy Scuba Auto 43mm is basically this watch with a ceramic bezel and no crown lock. The crown lock is what gives the Frogman its vintage look. It is a re-creation of the vintage Frogman and without the crown lock would be just another dive watch.
Horrible! For that money, there are many others I'd prefer over this and that crown lock! good lord...
