  • Detailed step by step process to properly rebuild your Quadrajet Carburetor. Watch the entire video as it is very details to make sure you complete your job correctly.
    The most detailed and most popular Quadrajet rebuild video on RUclips will take the fear out of rebuilding your Qjet! After watching my highly detailed video you will be able to rebuild your quadrajet carburetor and get your vehicle running great and back on the road where it should be!
    The quadrajet rebuilt in this video is of the 1979 era. Some quadrajet carburetor designs vary from year to year however the process will be similar. Electronic Quadrajets from 1980-1990 might need specialized tools to set the MC Solenoid if needed otherwise the rebuild procedure is very similar.

      I rebuilt (this weekend) the Quad off my 1974 Caddy that I bought 2 years ago.....found the reason why it was guzzling gas at idle(really bad black smoke in the morning).......lead plugs were a little loose(whacked them with a Punch and then a light coat of 2-Part Epoxy)......and whoever tried to rebuild the Carb the last time.....did not install the metering needles down the in the Jets below the Float. I did make a tool to hold those metering needles in place before placing the gasket and top part on. Your Quadrajet is laid-out different in many ways than the one on the Coupe Deville. Too save money on Brake Cleaner/Carb Cleaner....I bought a small bucket and lid and filled it to the top of the Carb with gasoline.......the next day.....almost the entire exterior/interior of Carb was spotless. Another tip, I used Q-tips in the hollow areas where Carbon and the slightest amount of varnish had gathered.

      Love the video, I just bought a 77 GMC Vandura box truck with a 400, it has been sitting for a long time. It drove great till I put gas in it, then it started gasping for fuel. Bought a new fuel pump, haven't put on yet but was wandering if I could send you my carb because I know you would do a thorough job of rebuilding it. I don't know if anyone in my area would do as much as you did. I usually do my own work on my vehicles. After video I know I could trust your work.

      I want to share some speciai information with you on my 40 years experience on these carburetors and the one you rebuilt in that video. Concerning the power piston and air horn upper carb gasket.. Whether it be the non computer rochestor carb or the computer carb from 80 to 90. On my personal cars ever since my cadillacs of the 1970s and 80s ive owned and my present 89 brogham cadillac with the olds 307 I MODERATE THOSE UPPER GASKETS.On that gasket, the part that goes around the power piston and the needles I CUT IT OUT!! It serves no purpose and as soon as you run that carb on your car that gasket sags due to gasoline and rubs against the power piston needles and they get stuck or dont work fully. Your airhorn assembly also on the top has two nostrils iike a nose in front of your choke housing or a cylinder so the float bowl can breath, and to have gasket material over that float and around those power piston needles sags and pushes down on the float and rubs those power piston needles when it tries to go back up or down. Cut the part out with scissors that goes around your power system and you wont be having trouble. I cut that part out of all my upper quadrajet carburetors. Even on the two barrel carbs cut that part OUT

    This video has taught me more than any book has. My only wish was watching this before I first took my carburetor apart and struggled and cursed putting back together. I did horribly that i caved and took to a shop that didn't fix the original problem I had with it. Thats a story for a different time. Thanks for making this video and for giving me the confidence of working on my carb again cause you explained everything well. You got a new subscriber.

      I was working on my hitachi dch306 but i don't know about the primary jet {slow} and the secondary jet {slow} , and they go a long way down and then there's a short screw that comes above them to cover them up , anyway my question is should i screw them all the way down , or should i screw them all the way down and then screw them up few turns and not all the way down ???? my air mixture screw stopped to have any affect on the carburetor after i have put it back after the rebuild , so can it be the reason is because i should not screw them all the way down and should back them few turns up ?????

    • @ClassicGBodyGarage
      @ClassicGBodyGarage  7 лет назад

      I am not familiar with a Hitachi however If the mixture screws have no affect on the carb and the way the engine runs then there is an issue. Turn the mixture screws all the way and DO NOT tighten them or you will ruin things. Back them out 2-3 turns to start with and adjust from there.

      Thank you for your reply , the mixture screw have no affect at all , if my float level is way up high , would it affect the mixture screw in a way that would prevent it from mixing the air with the fuel ?????

    Very detailed and well done video! Do not forget to check the primary throttle plate bushings, as they do wear with age and may present a vacuum leak, that you won't be able to 100% compensate for with the idle mix screws. If the screws were out of sync by two or more turns, there's a good chance, that the bushings are worn on the throttle linkage side.
    I used to overhaul these carbs for a living and really liked them as they gave very little trouble when cleaned, assembled and adjusted correctly.

      @ClassicGBodyGarage  7 лет назад

    I have seen a bunch of people toss a good q jet because it develops an off idle stumble- i take their “bad” q jet - install a new accelerator pump plunger and go do burn outs- your video is the best rebuild i have watched so far- people dont realize their is only 2 q jet sizes 750 and 800cfm- GM used millions of these carbs on hot small blocks and big blocks that were very fast- they are still used today by guys that can tune them to run 9s in the 1/4 mile - that is screamin fast-

    I wanted to express my gratitude to you for making this video. Two weeks ago my old Dodge truck stopped running and I knew it was the carb but I have NEVER build one in my life. I called 7 auto shop and no one would work on my old truck. I said what the hell. I bought myself a carb kit went on RUclips and found your video. I have watched it several times and I felt as if I could do it. Today 2.18.3019 I went for it and step by step I cleaned replace and repair just as you suggested and BAM! MY old truck runs GREAT! Smooth as a new car, idles smooth, great pick up and that small secondary lever, I left it on and it worked great too. I'm so impressed with myself and thanks to you I did something I always thought I could not. You have a friend in Texas!

    I have the Mercruiser 5.7 with the Rochester Quadrajet on my 1992 Crownline bowrider. It's been hard to start for the past three years. I thought it was just because the fuel was evaporating out of the float bowl if it sat too long. An easy remedy was just to hit it with some starting fluid in the driveway before I headed out to the lake, then it would run fine the rest of the day and start without a problem. I had read many boat forums concerning this matter, and everyone concluded that these older boats "just do that". Now I know why and how to correct it when I rebuild the carb next. Thank you very much for what I would consider one of the best carb rebuild videos on RUclips !

    I'm restoring a replica Indy Car that was a barn find. It wasn't started for 8 years. I've never rebuilt a carburetor, but I wanted to do the restoration myself. I watched your video several times before diving in. It was very detail and easy to follow. After cleaning, I followed your video step by step and it went back together easily. I bolted it back on the 1969 Chevy 350 SB, hooked up the fuel line, etc., started the fuel pump and on the second try, the motor roared back to life. With the straight headers, a few neighbors came out of their houses to see what the hell was going on! Thanks for taking the time to make a great video!

    I have rebuilt hundreds of Q-Jets in my day. When removing or installing the choke arm inside the body of the carb it is best to leave the rod on the arm. It helps when removing the choke arm. When reinstalling the choke arm it can hang on the rod and as you insert the shaft from the choke housing you can pivot the arm with the rod until it engages. Lots of memories from my auto mechanic days. The Q- Jet is my favorite carburetor. By the way Holley's suck.

    I want to say thanks for the detailed process. You helped me rebuild my first Q-Jet today! I checked several videos and yours was the best. Good detail, to the point and no 5 minute intro or endless jabber between steps.
    My old truck runs like a bat out of hell right now thanks to the rebuild. To be honest the only thing I found seriously wrong was the tiny horseshoe clip that holds the power piston below the float was missing, which would explain the tremendous flooding problem I was having.
    At idle the exhaust fumes still burn my nose and I don't know why. I have the idle screws set to 2.5 turns and it idles well. Will check the timing and go from there but overall the 454 is fully awake again.

    So nice to see someone who know what a great carburetor the Q--Jet is. Have fixed hundreds and can say after watching the video you got it down for sure. One of the best carbs ever made. Can be setup to work with just about any engine. Great for milage and performance too. Keep up the great work, V

    Great vid. First QJet I did was in 197O ...took apart 3 times to check float level due to flooding out when trying to start. Turned out the float was saturated with fuel due to a small crack. They are not hollow like a brass float but are a foam type construction with a coating to keep the foam dry and buoyant. The weight difference would not alllow the float to rise up to close the needle snugly against the seat once the fuel, in the bowl, was at the correct level. Got a new float, adjusted height, reinstalled and a perfect startup. So, be sure to examine your float for chips or cracks. Hope this may help all those with post rebuild flooding problems. Best to you and yours.

    great video I used to fear these carbs when I was young and they were in current use (had one on a 1975 Olds 350) but rebuilt my first one on a marine inboard (1988 Chevrolet 4.3 V6) and it really wasn't near as hard as I thought. Next time I'll have your vid running on my I-pad! Great tips.

      I’m fearing one right now. Bought an old truck and the fuel tank has all kinds of trash in it, something must have made it through the fuel filters and into the carb. Doing research before I order a rebuild kit.

    fantastic video. Like many others I have been intimated to do anything to quadrajet. I have a family heirloom all original bigblock monte carlo that has been sitting in storage for over a decade. I put a battery in it and will turn ove and even run as long as someone is pouring gas in the carb. I am about to get the numbers off the carb, order a kit, and attempt a rebuild. All thanks to your instruction. If you are not doing it, you should be instructing people for a living. Hands down the best how to video I have ever seen.

    Excellent video. I used to be one of those who thought Quadrajet carbs were junk. Of course that was strictly due to my lack of knowledge and not the engineering of.the carb itself. Keep up the good work my friend and thanks for posting the video. Semper Fi!
