    Two known but very fixable issues with Q-jets are the foam float, change that to brass and set the level cost $10.00 or less, and another lesser known and also very fixable issue is the well plugs between the throttle plate and the float bowl, remove the old press fit lead ones and install the repair kit (cost less than $10.00) with two aluminum plugs with O-ring seals and problems solved -- the Q-jet is an excellent carb if youre familiar with how to sort them.

Rebuilt a lot of Quadra Jets. Nothing kicks in and sounds better than a Quadra Jet. Keep on rebuilding them.

    Should put throttle return springs on like the factory had them. Connected to a bracket across that mounts torear carb bolts and the springs connect to the bottom of the throttle lever below the throttle shaft and pull straight rearward closing the throttle, The way you have it way out board will cause premature wear on the throttle plate bushings and invite the possibility of the throttle sticking full throttle if it cams over the pivot point with the spring at a angle

    • @PhilGrossman
      @PhilGrossman 2 месяца назад

      It actually puts less wear on the bushings the way he has it.

    Older quadrajet chokes were always in the intake manifold like yours, finicky to adjust but not that hard just WATCH VIDEOS on Q-jet rebuilds and you'll be surprized how easy they are to work on, I was rebuilding them when I was 16, I just bought me a manual that covered all the carbs from my era (im 64) and learned that way, I didnt have the internet and youtube and the internet, its even easier today with the internet.

    The Problem with one of these "replacement" Carbs, is what was Fuel Delivery Curve set up for? The Q-Jet was offered on tens of thousands different Engines and HP ratings, and few had the same Fuel Curve
    If the Choke is NOT opening Fully, the Secondaries will be locked out, so your Bimetal Choke, with the Welded Link is Questionable. The Old Carb looks like pre 1975 chevy, Calibrated quite Lean, and all the Jet changing in the World isn't gonna Richen it much, in regards to its tip-in Delivery. Some serious rework of the Non-Service Parts of the Fuel Bowl need recalibration
    The 'New' Carb has an entirely different Choke Mechanism, far less sophisticated
    The Idle Solenoid, wasn't just used on A/C cars, it was often used on non-AC ones to prevent/reduce Dieseling when the Engine was shut off. In the early 70s, lean Idle Mixtures combined with retarded Timing, required a greater opening of the Throttle to attain Idle Speed. When the engine was shut off, more air and thus Fuel was still moving, and the Higher Temps from the Forementioned Parameters would often result in the Engine kind of continuing to run without spark. The Solenoid would shut the Throttle in an Attempt to Starve the Engine of gas-air
    Big difference on the Linkage between the Primary Shaft and Secondary Shafts, Angles are different too
    It seems to run not too bad, out of the Box. It will be interesting how it runs at higher Speeds, keep us informed

      I was kind of in the same school of thought. You get what you pay for. The most interesting thing I noticed was that the throttle shafts 'appeared' to have the same OE style green Teflon coating. But I wonder. Is it REALLY Teflon or just some imitation green paint or coating. Most Chinese knock offs copy the 'look' without duplicating or understanding the function behind the engineering.

    • @vincemajestyk9497
      @vincemajestyk9497 2 месяца назад

      Not well. Hard to tell what that one is, but the OE QJ's and Holleys were cast zinc, most of the Carters were aluminum. Neither one hold up really well with the new fuel once they absorb water. It's the water that kills them. I would have went with a TQ or the Demon TQ knockoff 'Street Demon'. Those all metal carbs hold too much heat for the ethanol.

    • @grand73am
      @grand73am 13 дней назад

      Well, ethanol in fuel isn't exactly new at this point🙂. But, I have 5 70's GM cars with original Q-jets that I rebuilt. Been running them for many years, from 10 to 14 years since rebuilding them, 2 as daily drivers, the others I run at least once a month to keep them exercised. I used rebuild kits that come with ethanol resistant seals, like the accelerator pump seal. So, I drive my old Q-jets regularly and haven't had a problem with ethanol. They are all I have and drive, and they've been dependable. I have no need for a late model vehicle. The ones that sit longer between starts sometimes take more cranking to get fuel to the bowl, but they eventually start. If his new repro Q-jet is as good as my old rebuilds, it should be fine too.

    i have rebuilt over 1000 carbs 500 of them qjets , made some from 3 or 4 parts carbs about 75% worked fine they have very finicky needle and seats warped air horns stripped inlets shot throttle shafts, i think they are good for mileage but for ease and value very hard to beat an edelbrock performer (used) i have had good luck with holleys too as long as you replace all gaskets and needle assembly , imo qjets are a pita to deal with but when you have 5 gallon buckets of them you use what you got. i'm sure that new one worked better than rebuilt ones.

    Quadrash!ts we’re actually great carbs, yes very tuneable. There downfall is usually attributed to the small float bowls. Bowls could be sucked dry faster than they were able to refill in a performance application, fuel starvation in cornering, and acceleration applies. Rebuild, check float level & keep orifices clean. Accelerator pump ok? Check fuel pump output. Go enjoy.

    I had my 1979 Q-jet restored to better than new at JET Performance Products in Huntington Beach, CA. I went with their Stage Two Performance build. When I opened the box I was blown away by the quality service that totally restored my Q-jet to better than new condition. Simply amazing with a simple reinstall of my original carb as it was when I removed it from the engine. I was cautious to make sure I received my original carb and not some off the shelf rebuild by taking detailed photos of my carb ID number before I shipped it to JET and sure enough I received my original carb back from them. NO Games Played! So how did it work you may wonder, One word defines the results, PERFECTLY! Starts immediately, warms right up, NO STUTTER or BOGGING, PULLS HARD AND SMOOTH FROM IDLE TO FULL THROTTLE! My 383 Stroker loves it! So do I. I don't miss one penny of the $450.00 I spent for this restore by JET PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS. Ronster

      This $150 carb is for people who don't want to spend $450 for a rebuild or buy a new name brand carb. When you spend 3 times more for parts building a car then you end up putting $30k into it rather than $10k. Makes a big difference between a profit or big loss when it comes time to sell.

    My experience with the knock-off carbs has been that they work okay, but they use inferior metals that immediately start to corrode after fuel is introduced. They're built simply by the parts designs being copied but with no functionality being researched or considered.
    Quite simply they copy and assemble the different components with no idea what they're meant for... They work but they're never quite right.

    90% of fatigue problems with the Quadrejet is throttle shaft wear.... therefore sucking air and interfering with the air/fuel ratio.....

    • @grand73am
      @grand73am 13 дней назад

      Yes, and as you probably know, it's the throttle shaft bores in the carb body that wear, not the shaft. There are throttle shaft bushing kits available from q-jet parts suppliers (like cliffshighperformance) to fix that problem. I do it on all my q-jet rebuilds.

  • @blav2417

    Mine worked ok for a while. Then the throttle shaft bushings started leaking all over.

    Have you had any long-term issues with your new "knock-off" Rochester Quadrajet carburetor? I have, and they've been very disappointing.
    I bought one of these carbs off of Amazon on March 20 to replace the worn-out Edelbrock that was on my 68 C10. After watching a few videos on these knock-off carburetors, I figured that I would take a chance and try one out for myself. I've been rebuilding engines and carburetors ever since the 80s, so I've seen quite a few over my lifetime. At first, it seemed that the new Q-jet would work just fine, but I was wrong. It won't stay idling until the engine has warmed up to operating temperature, despite all of the tuning and adjustments and engine timing that I have done. Plus, if I let the truck sit for a few days, all of the gas has drained out of the fuel bowl. The well plugs are leaking. I have to prime the carb in order to get the truck running. I've got up until April 20 to return the carb. Thanks to these issues, I'll be returning this carb and going a different route.

      I haven't had any problems from mine but I don't drive it much. I have to prime all my cars after they sit awhile. There is a bunch of different manufacturers of these carbs so all might not be the same.

      the fuel evaporates out of the bowl thats the hard starting issue with carbs after sitting for a while!! put a cup of gas in jar and its gone overnight its the alcohol

  • @motorcitywestauto4674

    I don't understand the problem with rebuilding these. They are not that complicated. It's odd that this video came up while I'm rebuilding one for my boat. Takes me about 2 hours to disassemble/clean and reassemble. And I've done like 20 of these total since 1987 when I did the first one. So I'm not a pro, they are just not that complicated.
    The problem with those Chinese carbs is they will usually work great-for a little while. Then they usually start to develop issues. Watch UTG, he did a video about them. They are not anywhere near as good as the original. But you get what you pay for. And $400 isn't squat to spend on one of these old cars. It's just not a lot of money anymore.

    • @clunkersandclassics
      @clunkersandclassics  День назад

      This video is for people that can't rebuild one and don't want to pay someone to do it, have no carb to begin with or has one that's been deteriorated beyond repair. It's a cheap alternative to get your ride back on the road quick. And $400 is a lot of money to me and this channel.

    • @motorcitywestauto4674
      @motorcitywestauto4674 День назад

      @@clunkersandclassics All I'm saying is a $15 rebuild kit is usually a better way to go than a $150 Chinese knock off. The quadrajet comes apart in 3 main pieces and there's really not that much you have to do besides cleaning and keeping track of your parts. You're really only replacing like 8-10 pieces with a rebuild. There's one tricky section with the upper gasket to the air horn during reassembly, but that's it. And there's a ton of Q-jet videos on Y/T. Like I mentioned, if you watch UTG on this very subject, the knock off will usually disappoint you before too long. It's trading one problem for another.
